Statistical Analysis of Solar Neutrino Data

We estimate with Monte Carlo the goodness of fit and the confidence level of the standard allowed regions for the neutrino oscillation parameters obtained from the fit of solar neutrino data. We calculate allowed regions with correct frequentist coverage using the Crow-Gardner prescription of smallest acceptance intervals. We present also the results of a calculation of Bayesian allowed regions with a flat prior in the log(tan^2 theta)-log(Delta m^2) plane.

Lepton Numbers in the framework of Neutrino Mixing

In this short review we discuss the notion of lepton numbers. The strong evidence in favor of neutrino oscillations obtained recently in the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino experiment and in solar neutrino experiments imply that the law of conservation of family lepton numbers L_e, L_mu and L_tau is strongly violated. We consider the states of flavor neutrinos nu_e, nu_mu and nu_tau and we discuss the evolution of these states in space and time in the case of non-conservation of family lepton numbers due to the mixing of light neutrinos. We discuss and compare different flavor neutrino discovery experiments. We stress that experiments on the search for nu_mu->nu_tau and nu_e->nu_tau oscillations demonstrated that the flavor neutrino nu_tau is a new type of neutrino, different from nu_e and nu_mu. In the case of neutrino mixing, the lepton number (only one) is connected with the nature of massive neutrinos. Such conserved lepton number exist if massive neutrinos are Dirac particles. We review possibilities to check in future experiments whether the conserved lepton number exists.

Statistical Analysis of Solar Neutrino Data

We calculate with Monte Carlo the goodness of fit and the confidence level of the standard allowed regions for the neutrino oscillation parameters obtained from the fit of the total rates measured in solar neutrino experiments. We show that they are significantly overestimated in the standard method. We also calculate exact allowed regions with correct frequentist coverage. We show that the exact VO, LMA and LOW regions are much larger than the standard ones and merge together giving an allowed band at large mixing angles for all Delta m^2 > 10^{-10} eV^2.

Four-Neutrino Scenarios

The main features of four-neutrino 3+1 and 2+2 mixing schemes are reviewed, after a discussion on the necessity of at least four massive neutrinos if the solar, atmospheric and LSND anomalies are due to neutrino oscillations. A frequentist analysis of solar neutrino data

We present a Monte Carlo analysis in terms of neutrino oscillations of the total rates measured in solar neutrino experiments in the framework of frequentist statistics. We show that the goodness of fit and the confidence level of the allowed regions in the space of the neutrino oscillation parameters are significantly overestimated in the standard method. We also present a calculation of exact allowed regions with correct frequentist coverage. We show that the exact VO, LMA and LOW regions are much larger than the standard ones and merge together giving an allowed band at large mixing angles for all Delta m^2 > 10^{-10} eV^2.

The Power of Confidence Intervals

We consider the power to reject false values of the parameter in Frequentist methods for the calculation of confidence intervals. We connect the power with the physical significance (reliability) of confidence intervals for a parameter bounded to be non-negative. We show that the confidence intervals (upper limits) obtained with a (biased) method that near the boundary has large power in testing the parameter against larger alternatives and small power in testing the parameter against smaller alternatives are physically more significant. Considering the recently proposed methods with correct coverage, we show that the physical significance of upper limits is smallest in the Unified Approach and highest in the Maximum Likelihood Estimator method. We illustrate our arguments in the specific cases of a bounded Gaussian distribution and a Poisson distribution with known background.

Quantum Mechanics of Neutrino Oscillations

We present a simple but general treatment of neutrino oscillations in the framework of quantum mechanics using plane waves and intuitive wave packet principles when necessary. We attempt to clarify some confusing statements that have recently appeared in the literature.

Large nu_mu->nu_tau and nu_e->nu_tau transitions in short-baseline experiments?

Considering four-neutrino schemes of type 3+1, we identify four small regions of the neutrino mixing parameter space compatible with all data. Assuming a small mixing between the sterile neutrino and the isolated mass eigenstate we show that large nu_mu->nu_tau and nu_e->nu_tau transitions are predicted in short-baseline experiments and could be observed in the near future in dedicated experiments. We discuss also implications for solar, atmospheric and long-baseline neutrino experiments and we present a formalism that allows to describe in 3+1 schemes atmospheric neutrino oscillations, long-baseline nu_mu disappearance and nu_mu->nu_tau transitions in matter.

Four-neutrino oscillations and the solar neutrino problem

We perform a fit of solar neutrino data in the framework of the two four-neutrino schemes that are compatible with the results of all neutrino oscillation experiments. These schemes allow simultaneous transitions of solar nu_e's into active nu_mu's, nu_tau's and sterile nu_s. The data imply that the SMA solution is valid for any combination of nu_e->active and nu_e->sterile transitions, whereas the LMA, LOW and VO solutions disappear when nu_e->nu_s transitions are dominant.

A frequentist analysis of solar neutrino data

We calculate with Monte Carlo the goodness of fit and the confidence level of the standard allowed regions for the neutrino oscillation parameters obtained from the fit of solar neutrino data. We show that the values of the goodness of fit and of the confidence level of the allowed regions are significantly smaller than the standard ones. Using Neyman's method, we also calculate exact allowed regions with correct frequentist coverage. We show that the standard allowed region around the global minimum of the least-squares function is a reasonable approximation of the exact one, whereas the size of the other regions is dramatically underestimated in the standard method.

Statistical treatment of detection cross-section uncertainties in the analysis of solar neutrino data

We propose a modification to the standard statistical treatment of the detection cross-section uncertainties in the analysis of solar neutrino data. We argue that the uncertainties of the energy-averaged cross sections of the different neutrino fluxes in the same experiment should be treated as correlated. We show that the resulting allowed regions for the neutrino oscillation parameters are significantly larger than the ones obtained with uncorrelated uncertainties.

What is the Usefulness of Frequentist Confidence Intervals?

The following questions are discussed: ``Why confidence intervals are a hot topic?''; ``Are confidence intervals objective?''; ``What is the usefulness of coverage?''; ``How to obtain useful information from experiment?''; ``The confidence level must be chosen independently from the knowledge of the data?''.

Four--Neutrino Oscillation Solutions of the Solar Neutrino Problem

We present an analysis of the neutrino oscillation solutions of the solar neutrino problem in the framework of four-neutrino mixing where a sterile neutrino is added to the three standard ones. We perform a fit to the full data set corresponding to the 825-day Super-Kamiokande data sample as well as to Chlorine, GALLEX and SAGE and Kamiokande experiments. In our analysis we use all measured total event rates as well as all Super-Kamiokande data on the zenith angle dependence and the recoil electron energy spectrum. We consider both transitions via the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein (MSW) mechanism as well as oscillations in vacuum (just-so) and find the allowed solutions for different values of the additional mixing angles. This framework permits transitions into active or sterile neutrinos controlled by the additional parameter $\cos^2(\vartheta_{23}) \cos^2(\vartheta_{24})$ . We discuss the maximum allowed values of this additional mixing parameter for the different solutions.

Enhancing the physical significance of Frequentist confidence intervals

It is shown that all the Frequentist methods are equivalent from a statistical point of view, but the physical significance of the confidence intervals depends on the method. The Bayesian Ordering method is presented and confronted with the Unified Approach in the case of a Poisson process with background. Some criticisms to both methods are answered. It is also argued that a general Frequentist method is not needed.

Finally neutrino has mass

The present status of the problem of neutrino mass, mixing and neutrino oscillations is briefly summarized. The evidence for oscillations of atmospheric neutrinos found recently in the Super-Kamiokande experiment is discussed. Indications in favor of neutrino oscillations obtained in solar neutrino experiments and in the accelerator LSND experiment are also considered. Implications of existing neutrino oscillation data for neutrino masses and mixing are discussed.

Constraints from Neutrino Oscillation Experiments on the Effective Majorana Mass in Neutrinoless Double $β$-Decay

We determine the possible values of the effective Majorana neutrino mass $|< m > |= |\sum_j U_{ej}^2 m_j|$ in the different phenomenologically viable three and four-neutrino scenarios. The quantities $U_{αj}$ ($α= e,μ,τ,...$) denote the elements of the neutrino mixing matrix and the Majorana neutrino masses $m_j$ ($j=1,2,3,...$) are ordered as $m_1 < m_2 < ... $ Assuming $m_1 \ll m_3$ in the three-neutrino case and $m_1 \ll m_4$ in the four-neutrino case, we discuss, in particular, how constraints on $| < m > |$ depend on the mixing angle relevant in solar neutrino oscillations and on the three mass-squared differences obtained from the analyses of the solar, atmospheric and LSND data. If neutrinoless double $β$-decay proceeds via the mechanism involving $|< m >|$, conclusions about neutrinoless double $β$-decay can be drawn. If one of the two viable four-neutrino schemes (Scheme A) is realized in nature, $|< m >|$ can be as large as 1 eV and neutrinoless double $β$-decay could possibly be discovered in the near future. In this case a Majorana CP phase of the mixing matrix $U$ could be determined. In the other four-neutrino scheme (Scheme B) there is an upper bound on $|< m >|$ of the order of $10^{-2}$ eV. In the case of three-neutrino mixing the same is true if the neutrino mass spectrum is hierarchical, however, if there exist two quasi-degenerate neutrinos and the first neutrino has a much smaller mass, values of $|< m >|$ as large as $\sim 0.1$ eV are possible.

Neutrinoless double-beta decay with three or four neutrino mixing

Considering the scheme with mixing of three neutrinos and a mass hierarchy that can accommodate the results of solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments, it is shown that the results of solar neutrino experiments imply a lower bound for the effective Majorana mass in neutrinoless double-beta decay, under the natural assumptions that massive neutrinos are Majorana particles and there are no unlikely fine-tuned cancellations among the contributions of the different neutrino masses. Considering the four-neutrino schemes that can accommodate also the results of the LSND experiment, it is shown that only one of them is compatible with the results of neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments and with the measurement of the abundances of primordial elements produced in Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis. It is shown that in this scheme, under the assumptions that massive neutrinos are Majorana particles and there are no cancellations among the contributions of the different neutrino masses, the results of the LSND experiment imply a lower bound for the effective Majorana mass in neutrinoless double-beta decay.

Four-neutrino mixing

It is shown that only two four-neutrino schemes are compatible with the results of all neutrino oscillation experiments. These two schemes have a mass spectrum composed of two pairs of neutrinos with close masses separated by the "LSND gap" of the order of 1 eV.
