Phase dynamics and dissipation in tunnel ferromagnetic Josephson junctions

We investigate tunnel ferromagnetic Josephson junctions based on Superconductor-Insulator-thin superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor multilayers. A comparative study of their electrodynamic properties is performed for junctions with niobium and aluminum (Al) electrodes, featuring different ferromagnetic interlayer materials and lateral dimensions ranging from the micrometric to the submicrometric scale. The parameters extracted from the fitting of the current-voltage characteristics using the tunnel junction microscopic model are found to be consistent with those independently estimated from switching current distribution measurements. Submicrometric Al-based devices exhibit electrodynamic properties comparable to those implemented in state-of-the-art transmon qubits and display clear signatures of quantum phase diffusion. The strong agreement between transport modelling and escape dynamics establishes a robust framework for describing hybrid ferromagnetic Josephson junctions consistent with their energy scales and supports their potential integration into superconducting quantum and classical digital circuits.

Current Noise Investigation in Josephson Devices by Switching Current Measurements

An experimental investigation of the critical current noise in underdamped niobium based Josephson junctions by a technique based on the switching current measurements is reported. By sweeping the junction with a current ramp we measure the critical current switching using the standard time of flight technique and analyze the data to extract the current noise. The experimental results show a linear behavior of the current white noise from both the junction area and the temperature. These measurement provide very useful information about the intrinsic noise of Josephson devices involving SQUIDs and qubits.

Topology-Induced Critical Current Enhancement in Josephson Networks

We investigate the properties of Josephson junction networks with inhomogeneous architecture. The networks are shaped as "quare comb" planar lattices on which Josephson junctions link superconducting islands arranged in the plane to generate the pertinent topology. Compared to the behavior of reference linear arrays, the temperature dependencies of the Josephson currents of the branches of the network exhibit relevant differences. The observed phenomena evidence new and surprising behavior of superconducting Josephson arrays as well as remarkable similarities with bosonic junction arrays.

Pulse-induced switches in a Josephson tunnel stacked device

Pulse activated transitions from the metastable to the running state and viceversa have been observed in a stacked double tunnel Nb-based Josephson system. Experimental results are compared with numerical simulations based on the Sine-Gordon model of the stacked junctions by injecting pulses with variable amplitude in one of the junctions of the stack, and observing the voltage response of the other junction. Both experimental and numerical results show the possibility to induce both direct and back-switching transitions from the metastable to the running state simply by changing the amplitude of the electronic pulses injected across the stack device.
