Complex magnetic phases and thermodynamics of CuB_2O_4

The copper metaborate CuB_2O_4(CBO) has been studied within the parametric space of magnetic field (B) and temperature (T), showing a series of distinct phases, including commensurate and incommensurate magnetic orders, as well as magnetic soliton phases. However, no single study has simultaneously demonstrated all these phases. moreover, the existence of additional phases below 2 K or above 2 T for B perpenducular to c has been scarcely explored. This work presents the first comprehensive construction of the complex B-T phase diagram for T = 0.1 to 25 K and B = 0 to 9 T (B perpenducular to c), utilizing thermodynamic probes, magnetic measurements, and neutron scattering on a single batch of CBO crystals. Our findings elucidate new magnetic phases and regimes. First-principles calculations help to gain a deeper understanding of this complex phase diagram. The emergence of various phases within such a narrow B and T regime is attributed to two primary mechanisms: the delicate competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, and the weak exchange and superexchange interactions within and between the Cu(A) and Cu(B) sublattices. This competition also leads to a magnetically frustrated ground state at absolute zero where the total magnetic entropy release from high to low temperatures is only 0.76 Rln2, lower than Rln2 expected for copper spin 1/2. Using CBO as a model system, the present work elucidates the intricate mechanisms underlying the formation of complex magnetic phases.

Spin-torque oscillation in a magnetic insulator probed by a single-spin sensor

Coherent, self-sustained oscillation of magnetization in spin-torque oscillators (STOs) is a promising source for on-chip, nanoscale generation of microwave magnetic fields. Such fields could be used for local excitation of spin-wave resonances, control of spin qubits, and studies of paramagnetic resonance. However, local characterization of fields emitted by an STO has remained an outstanding challenge. Here, we use the spin of a single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defect in diamond to probe the magnetic fields generated by an STO in a microbar of ferromagnetic insulator yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG). The combined spectral resolution and sensitivity of the NV sensor allows us to resolve multiple spin-wave modes and characterize their damping. When damping is decreased sufficiently via spin injection, the modes auto-oscillate, as indicated by a strongly reduced linewidth, a diverging magnetic power spectral density, and synchronization of the STO frequency to an external microwave source. These results open the way for quantitative, nanoscale mapping of the microwave signals generated by STOs, as well as harnessing STOs as local probes of mesoscopic spin systems.

Correlations and dynamics of spins in an XY-like spin-glass (Ni0.4Mn0.6)TiO3 single crystal system

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering (ENS and INS) experiments were performed on a single crystal of (Ni0.4Mn0.6)TiO3 (NMTO) to study the spatial correlations and dynamics of spins in the XY-like spin-glass (SG) state. Magnetization measurements reveal signatures of SG behavior in NMTO with a freezing temperature of TSG ~ 9.1 K. The ENS experiments indicated that the intensity of magnetic diffuse scattering starts to increase around 12 K, which is close to TSG. Also, spin-spin correlation lengths (zeta) at 1.5 K are approximately (21) and (73) angstrom in the interlayer and the in-plane directions, respectively, demonstrating that magnetic correlations in NMTO exhibit quasi two-dimensional antiferromagnetic order. In addition, critical exponent (beta) is determined to be 0.37 from the intensity of magnetic diffuse scattering confirms the XY-like SG state of NMTO. INS results show quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) profiles below TSG. The life-time of dynamic correlations obtained from the half width at half maximum of the Lorentzian QENS profiles, are approximately 16 and 16 ps at 10 K for two positions (0.00, 0.00, 1.52) and (0.01, 0.01, 1.50), respectively. Therefore, our experimental findings demonstrate that short-range-ordered antiferromagnetic clusters with short-lived spin correlations are present in the XY-like SG state of NMTO.

Anisotropy in the thermal hysteresis of resistivity and charge density wave nature of single crystal SrFeO3-delta: X-ray absorption and photoemission studies

The local electronic and atomic structures of the high-quality single crystal of SrFeO3-{delta} ({delta}~0.19) were studied using temperature-dependent x-ray absorption and valence-band photoemission spectroscopy (VB-PES) to investigate the origin of anisotropic resistivity in the ab-plane and along the c-axis close to the region of thermal hysteresis (near temperature for susceptibility maximum, Tm~78 K). All experiments herein were conducted during warming and cooling processes. The Fe L3,2-edge X-ray linear dichrois results show that during cooling from room temperature to below the transition temperature, the unoccupied Fe 3d eg states remain in persistently out-of-plane 3d3z2-r2 orbitals. In contrast, in the warming process below the transition temperature, they change from 3d3z2-r2 to in-plane 3dx2-y2 orbitals. The nearest-neighbor (NN) Fe-O bond lengths also exhibit anisotropic behavior in the ab-plane and along the c-axis below Tm. The anisotropic NN Fe-O bond lengths and Debye-Waller factors stabilize the in-plane Fe 3dx2-y2 and out-of-plane 3d3z2-r2 orbitals during warming and cooling, respectively. Additionally, a VB-PES study further confirms that a relative band gap opens at low temperature in both the ab-plane and along the c-axis, providing the clear evidence of the charge-density-wave nature of SrFeO3-{delta} ({delta}~ 0.19) single crystal.

Long-range FMR driven spin pumping through a nonmagnetic insulator

Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) driven spin pumping is an emerging technique for injection of a pure spin current from a ferromagnet (FM) into a non-magnetic (NM) material without an accompanying charge current. It is widely believed that this pumping proceeds exclusively via a short-range exchange interaction at the FM/NM interface. Here we report robust, long-range spin pumping from the ferrimagnetic double perovskite Sr2FeMoO6 (SFMO) into Pt across an insulating barrier up to 200 nm thick, and systematically rule out all known spurious effects. This result demonstrates dynamic spin injection over a distance far beyond the coupling range of the exchange interaction, exposing the need to consider other coupling mechanisms. The characteristic length scale for magnetic textures in Sr2FeMoO6 is approximately 150 nm, resulting from structural antiphase boundaries, thus raising the possibility that magnetic dipole coupling underlies the observed long range spin transfer. This discovery reveals a route to dynamic angular momentum transfer between a FM and a NM in the absence of mediation by itinerant electrons and promises new spin-functional devices employing long-range spin pumping.

Scaling of spin Hall angle in 3d, 4d and 5d metals from Y3Fe5O12/metal spin pumping

Pure spin currents generated by spin pumping in ferromagnet/nonmagnet (FM/NM) bilayers produce inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) voltages in the NM, from which spin pumping and transport characteristics of the NM can be extracted. Due to its exceptionally low damping, Y3Fe5O12 (YIG) is an important and widely used FM for microwave devices and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spin pumping. Here we report systematic investigation of spin pumping from 20-nm thick YIG thin films to a series of 3d, 4d and 5d normal metals (Cu, Ag, Ta, W, Pt and Au) with various spin-orbit coupling strengths. From enhanced Gilbert damping obtained from the frequency dependence of FMR linewidths and ISHE signals, the spin Hall angles and YIG/NM interfacial spin mixing conductances are quantitatively determined for these metals. The spin Hall angles largely vary as the fourth power of the atomic number, corroborating the dominant role of spin-orbit coupling across a broad range in the inverse spin Hall effect.

Probing the Spin Pumping Mechanism: Exchange Coupling with Exponential Decay in Y3Fe5O12/barrier/Pt Heterostructures

Ferromagnetic resonance driven spin pumping of pure spin currents from a ferromagnet into a nonmagnetic material promises new spin-functional devices with low energy consumption. The mechanism of spin pumping is under intense investigation and it is widely believed that exchange interaction between the ferromagnet and nonmagnetic material is responsible for this phenomenon. We observe a thousand-fold exponential decay of the spin pumping from 20-nm thick Y3Fe5O12 films to platinum across insulating barriers, from which the exponential decay lengths of 0.16 and 0.23 nm are extracted for oxide barriers with band gaps of 4.93 eV and 2.36 eV, respectively. This prototypical signature of quantum tunneling through a barrier underscores the importance of exchange coupling for spin pumping and reveals its dependence on the characteristics of the barrier material.

Large Spin Pumping from Epitaxial Y3Fe5O12 Thin Films to Pt and W Layers

Epitaxial Y3Fe5O12 thin films have been deposited by off-axis sputtering, which exhibit excellent crystalline quality, enabling observation of large spin pumping signals in Pt/Y3Fe5O12 and W/Y3Fe5O12 bilayers driven by cavity ferromagnetic resonance. The inverse spin Hall voltages reach 2.10 mV and -5.26 mV in 5-mm long Pt/Y3Fe5O12 and W/Y3Fe5O12 bilayers, respectively, excited by a radio-frequency magnetic field of 0.3 Oe. From the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth broadening, the interfacial spin mixing conductance of 4.56E14 Ω-1m-2 and 2.30E14 Ω-1m-2 are obtained for Pt/Y3Fe5O12 and W/Y3Fe5O12 bilayers, respectively.

Determination of magnetic order of the rare-earth ions in multiferroic TbMn2O5

We have employed resonant x-ray magnetic scattering to specifically probe the magnetic order of the rare-earth ions in multiferroic $\mathrm{TbMn_2O_5}$. Two energy resonances were observed, one originated from the E1-E1 dipolar transition and the other from the E2-E2 quadrupolar transition. These resonances directly probe the valence 5d band and the partially occupied 4f band, respectively. First, full polarization analysis, which is a measurement of the scattered polarization as a function of incident polarization, confirmed a spin polarization of the terbium valence states (probed by the E1-E1 transition) by the $\mathrm{Mn^{4+}}$ spin density in the commensurate phase. Second, full polarization analysis data were collected in the low-temperature incommensurate and commensurate phases when tuned to the E2-E2 resonance. By employing a least-squares fitting procedure, the spin orientations of the terbium ion sublattice were refined.
