Determination of anisotropic Hc2 up to 60 T in (Ba0.55K0.45)Fe2As2 single crystals

The radio frequency penetration depth was measured in the superconductor (Ba$_{0.55}$K$_{0.45}$)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ under pulsed magnetic fields extending to 60 tesla and down to 14 K. Using these data we are able to infer a $H_{c2}(T)$, $H-T$ phase diagram, for applied fields parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis. The upper critical field curvature is different for the respective orientations but they each remain positive down to 14 K. The upper critical field anisotropy is moderate, $\approx 3.5$ close to $T_c$, and drops with the decrease of temperature, reaching $\approx 1.2$ at $14 K$. These data and analysis indicate that (i) (Ba$_{0.55}$K$_{0.45}$)Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ anisotropy diminishes with temperature and has an unusual temperature dependence, (ii) $H_{c2} (T=0)$ for this compound may easily approach fields of 75 tesla.

Quantum oscillations in the parent magnetic phase of an iron arsenide high temperature superconductor

We report quantum oscillation measurements in SrFe2As2 - which is an antiferromagnetic parent of the iron-arsenide family of superconductors - known to become superconducting under doping and the application of pressure. The magnetic field and temperature dependences of the oscillations between 20 and 55 T in the liquid helium temperature range suggest that the electronic excitations are those of a Fermi liquid. We show that the observed Fermi surface comprising small pockets is consistent with the formation of a spin-density wave. Our measurements thus demonstrate that high Tc superconductivity can occur on doping or pressurizing a conventional metallic spin-density wave state.

Alignment Dynamics of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes in Pulsed Ultrahigh Magnetic Fields

We have measured the dynamic alignment properties of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) suspensions in pulsed high magnetic fields through linear dichroism spectroscopy. Millisecond-duration pulsed high magnetic fields up to 56 T as well as microsecond-duration pulsed ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 166 T were used. Due to their anisotropic magnetic properties, SWNTs align in an applied magnetic field, and because of their anisotropic optical properties, aligned SWNTs show linear dichroism. The characteristics of their overall alignment depend on several factors, including the viscosity and temperature of the suspending solvent, the degree of anisotropy of nanotube magnetic susceptibilities, the nanotube length distribution, the degree of nanotube bundling, and the strength and duration of the applied magnetic field. In order to explain our data, we have developed a theoretical model based on the Smoluchowski equation for rigid rods that accurately reproduces the salient features of the experimental data.

Quantum Oscillations in the Underdoped Cuprate YBa2Cu4O8

We report the observation of quantum oscillations in the underdoped cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu4O8 using a tunnel-diode oscillator technique in pulsed magnetic fields up to 85T. There is a clear signal, periodic in inverse field, with frequency 660+/-15T and possible evidence for the presence of two components of slightly different frequency. The quasiparticle mass is m*=3.0+/-0.3m_e. In conjunction with the results of Doiron-Leyraud et al. for YBa2Cu3O6.5, the present measurements suggest that Fermi surface pockets are a general feature of underdoped copper oxide planes and provide information about the doping dependence of the Fermi surface.

Fermi surface of CeIn3 above the Neel critical field

We report measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in CeIn3 in magnetic fields extending to ~90 T, well above the Ne'el critical field of Hc ~61 T. The unreconstructed Fermi surface a-sheet is observed in the high magnetic field polarized paramagnetic limit, but with its effective mass and Fermi surface volume strongly reduced in size compared to that observed in the low magnetic field paramagnetic regime under pressure. The spheroidal topology of this sheet provides an ideal realization of the transformation from a `large Fermi surface' accommodating f-electrons to a `small Fermi surface' when the f-electron moments become polarized.

Uncommonly High Upper Critical Field in the Superconducting KOs$_2$O$_6$ Pyrochlore

The entire temperature dependence of the upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ in the $β$-pyrochlore KOs$_2$O$_6$ is obtained from high-field resistivity and magnetic measurements. Both techniques identically give $H_{\rm c2}(T \simeq 0 {\rm K})$ not only surprisingly high ($\sim 33$ T), but also the approach to it unusually temperature-\emph{linear} all the way below $T_{\rm c}$ (= 9.6 K). We show that, while $H_{\rm c2}(0)$ exceeds a simple spin-singlet paramagnetic limit $H_{\rm P}$, it is well below an $H_{\rm P}$ enhanced due to the missing spatial inversion symmetry reported recently in KOs$_2$O$_6$, ensuring that the pair-breaking here is executed by orbital degrees. {\it Ab initio} calculations of orbital $H_{\rm c2}$ show that the unusual temperature dependence is reproduced if dominant s-wave superconductivity resides on the smaller closed Fermi surfaces.

A photonic bandgap resonator to facilitate GHz frequency conductivity experiments in pulsed magnetic fields

We describe instrumentation designed to perform millimeter-wave conductivity measurements in pulsed high magnetic fields at low temperatures. The main component of this system is an entirely non-metallic microwave resonator. The resonator utilizes periodic dielectric arrays (photonic bandgap structures) to confine the radiation, such that the resonant modes have a high Q-factor, and the system possesses sufficient sensitivity to measure small samples within the duration of a magnet pulse. As well as measuring the sample conductivity to probe orbital physics in metallic systems, this technique can detect the sample permittivity and permeability allowing measurement of spin physics in insulating systems. We demonstrate the system performance in pulsed magnetic fields with both electron paramagnetic resonance experiments and conductivity measurements of correlated electron systems.

Suppression of the $γ-α$ structural phase transition in $Ce_{0.8} La_{0.1} Th_{0.1}$ by large magnetic fields

The $γ-α$ transition in Ce$_{0.8}$La$_{0.1}$Th$_{0.1}$ is measured as a function of applied magnetic field using both resistivity and magnetization. The $γ- α$ transition temperature decreases with increasing magnetic field, reaching zero temperature at around 56 T. The magnetic-field dependence of the transition temperature may be fitted using a model that invokes the field and temperature dependence of the entropy of the $4f$-electron moments of the $γ$ phase, suggesting that the volume collapse in Ce and its alloys is primarily driven by entropic considerations.

Dimensionality of superconductivity in the infinite-layer high-temperature cuprate Sr0.9M0.1CuO2 (M = La, Gd)

The high magnetic field phase diagram of the electron-doped infinite layer high-temperature superconducting (high-T_c) compound Sr_{0.9}La_{0.1}CuO_2 was probed by means of penetration depth and magnetization measurements in pulsed fields to 60 T. An anisotropy ratio of 8 was detected for the upper critical fields with H parallel (H_{c2}^{ab}) and perpendicular (H_{c2}^c) to the CuO_2 planes, with H_{c2}^{ab} extrapolating to near the Pauli paramagnetic limit of 160 T. The longer superconducting coherence length than the lattice constant along the c-axis indicates that the orbital degrees of freedom of the pairing wavefunction are three dimensional. By contrast, low-field magnetization and specific heat measurements of Sr_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}CuO_2 indicate a coexistence of bulk s-wave superconductivity with large moment Gd paramagnetism close to the CuO_2 planes, suggesting a strong confinement of the spin degrees of freedom of the Cooper pair to the CuO_2 planes. The region between H_{c2}^{ab} and the irreversibility line in the magnetization, H_{irr}^{ab}, is anomalously large for an electron-doped high-T_c cuprate, suggesting the existence of additional quantum fluctuations perhaps due to a competing spin-density wave order.

Magnetotransport and Superconductivity of Alpha-Uranium

We have measured the electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and Hall effect on several new single crystal samples and one polycrystalline sample of alpha-uranium. The residual resistivity ratios of these samples vary from 13 to 315. Matthiessen's law appears to hold above the onset of the charge density wave phase transitions that begin near 43 K, but not below this temperature. Sharp features at all three charge density wave transitions are observed and the effects of high magnetic fields on them are presented and discussed. The magnetoresistance is anisotropic, reaches 1000% at 2 K and 18 T, and does not exhibit Kohler scaling. The Hall coefficient is positive, independent of magnetic field, and slightly temperature dependent above about 40 K in agreement with earlier studies. Below 40 K the Hall coefficient changes sign as the temperature falls, varies with field, and becomes much more strongly negative at the lowest temperatures than has been reported. Some of our results suggest that a spin density wave may coexist with the charge density wave states. Superconductivity is observed in two of our samples, we argue that it is intrinsic to alpha-uranium and suggest that it is consistent with a two-band model. Several parameters characterizing the transport and superconductivity of alpha-uranium are estimated.

High magnetic field-induced insulating phase in an organic conductor

We report electrical transport, skin depth, and magnetocaloric measurements in the tau-series of organic conductors at very high magnetic fields. Above 36 T these materials show a magnetic field induced first order phase transition from a metallic to an insulating state. The transition, which is a bulk thermodynamic phenomenon, does not follow the conventional prescription for field induced phase transitions in organic conductors.

Magnetic susceptibility of the normal-superconducting transition in high-purity single-crystal alpha-uranium

We report complex ac magnetic susceptibility measurements of a superconducting transition in very high-quality single-crystal alpha-uranium using microfabricated coplanar magnetometers. We identify an onset of superconductivity at T~0.7 K in both the real and imaginary components of the susceptibility which is confirmed by resistivity data. A superconducting volume fraction argument, based on a comparison with a calibration YBCO sample, indicates that the superconductivity in these samples may be filamentary. Our data also demonstrate the sensitivity of the coplanar micro-magnetometers, which are ideally suited to measurements in pulsed magnetic fields exceeding 100 T.

Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As

We have measured the magnetoresistance in a series of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As samples with 0.033$\le x \le$ 0.053 for three mutually orthogonal orientations of the applied magnetic field. The spontaneous resistivity anisotropy (SRA) in these materials is negative (i.e. the sample resistance is higher when its magnetization is perpendicular to the measuring current than when the two are parallel) and has a magnitude on the order of 5% at temperatures near 10K and below. This stands in contrast to the results for most conventional magnetic materials where the SRA is considerably smaller in magnitude for those few cases in which a negative sign is observed. The magnitude of the SRA drops from its maximum at low temperatures to zero at T$_C$ in a manner that is consistent with mean field theory. These results should provide a significant test for emerging theories of transport in this new class of materials.

A statistical model for the intrinsically broad superconducting to normal transition in quasi-two-dimensional crystalline organic metals

Although quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductors such as $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu(NCS)$_2$ seem to be very clean systems, with apparent quasiparticle mean-free paths of several thousand Å, the superconducting transition is intrinsically broad (e.g $\sim 1$ K wide for $T_c \approx 10$ K). We propose that this is due to the extreme anisotropy of these materials, which greatly exacerbates the statistical effects of spatial variations in the potential experienced by the quasiparticles. Using a statistical model, we are able to account for the experimental observations. A parameter $\bar{x}$, which characterises the spatial potential variations, may be derived from Shubnikov-de Haas oscillation experiments. Using this value, we are able to predict a transition width which is in good agreement with that observed in MHz penetration-depth measurements on the same sample.

Thermal activation between Landau levels in the organic superconductor $β''$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$SF$_{5}$CH$_{2}$CF$_{2}$SO$_{3}$

We show that Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the interlayer resistivity of the organic superconductor $β''$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$SF$_{5}$ CH$_{2}$CF$_{2}$SO$_{3}$ become very pronounced in magnetic fields $\sim$~60~T. The conductivity minima exhibit thermally-activated behaviour that can be explained simply by the presence of a Landau gap, with the quasi-one-dimensional Fermi surface sheets contributing negligibly to the conductivity. This observation, together with complete suppression of chemical potential oscillations, is consistent with an incommensurate nesting instability of the quasi-one-dimensional sheets.

Experimental observation of Frohlich superconductivity in high magnetic fields

Resistivity and irreversible magnetisation data taken within the high-magnetic-field CDWx phase of the quasi-two-dimensional organic metal alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2KHg(SCN)4 are shown to be consistent with a field-induced inhomogeneous superconducting phase. In-plane skin-depth measurements show that the resistive transition on entering the CDWx phase is both isotropic and representative of the bulk.

The High Magnetic Field Phase Diagram of a Quasi-One Dimensional Metal

We present a unique high magnetic field phase of the quasi-one dimensional organic conductor (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$. This phase, termed "Q-ClO$_4$", is obtained by rapid thermal quenching to avoid ordering of the ClO$_4$ anion. The magnetic field dependent phase of Q-ClO$_4$ is distinctly different from that in the extensively studied annealed material. Q-ClO$_4$ exhibits a spin density wave (SDW) transition at $\approx$ 5 K which is strongly magnetic field dependent. This dependence is well described by the theoretical treatment of Bjelis and Maki. We show that Q-ClO$_4$ provides a new B-T phase diagram in the hierarchy of low-dimensional organic metals (one-dimensional towards two-dimensional), and describe the temperature dependence of the of the quantum oscillations observed in the SDW phase.
