Optimal joint measurement of two observables of a qubit

Heisenberg's uncertainty relations for measurement quantify how well we can jointly measure two complementary observables and have attracted much experimental and theoretical attention recently. Here we provide an exact tradeoff between the worst-case errors in measuring jointly two observables of a qubit, i.e., all the allowed and forbidden pairs of errors, especially asymmetric ones, are exactly pinpointed. For each pair of optimal errors we provide an optimal joint measurement that is realizable without introducing any ancilla and entanglement. Possible experimental implementations are discussed and Toronto experiment [Rozema et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 100404 (2012)] can be readily adapted to an optimal joint measurement of two orthogonal observables.

Test of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Steering Based on the All-Versus-Nothing Proof

In comparison with entanglement and Bell nonlocality, Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering is a newly emerged research topic and in its incipient stage. Although Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering has been explored via violations of steering inequalities both theoretically and experimentally, the known inequalities in the literatures are far from well-developed. As a result, it is not yet possible to observe Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering for some steerable mixed states. Recently, a simple approach was presented to identify Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering based on all-versus-nothing argument, offering a strong condition to witness the steerability of a family of two-qubit (pure or mixed) entangled states. In this work, we show that the all-versus-nothing proof of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering can be tested by measuring the projective probabilities. Through the bound of probabilities imposed by local-hidden-state model, the proposed test shows that steering can be detected by the all-versus-nothing argument experimentally even in the presence of imprecision and errors. Our test can be implemented in many physical systems and we discuss the possible realizations of our scheme with non-Abelian anyons and trapped ions.

Linearity of quantum probability measure and Hardy's model

We re-examine d=4 hidden-variables-models for a system of two spin-$1/2$ particles in view of the concrete model of Hardy, who analyzed the criterion of entanglement without referring to inequality. The basis of our analysis is the linearity of the probability measure related to the Born probability interpretation, which excludes non-contextual hidden-variables models in $d\geq 3$. To be specific, we note the inconsistency of the non-contextual hidden-variables model in $d=4$ with the linearity of the quantum mechanical probability measure in the sense $\langleψ|{\bf a}\cdot {\bf σ}\otimes{\bf b}\cdot {\bf σ}|ψ\rangle+\langleψ|{\bf a}\cdot {\bf σ}\otimes{\bf b}^{\prime}\cdot {\bf σ}|ψ\rangle=\langleψ|{\bf a}\cdot {\bf σ}\otimes ({\bf b}+{\bf b}^{\prime})\cdot {\bf σ}|ψ\rangle$ for non-collinear ${\bf b}$ and ${\bf b}^{\prime}$. It is then shown that Hardy's model in $d=4$ does not lead to a unique mathematical expression in the demonstration of the discrepancy of local realism (hidden-variables model) with entanglement and thus his proof is incomplete. We identify the origin of this non-uniqueness with the non-uniqueness of translating quantum mechanical expressions into expressions in hidden-variables models, which results from the failure of the above linearity of the probability measure. In contrast, if the linearity of the probability measure is strictly imposed, which is tantamount to asking that the non-contextual hidden-variables model in $d=4$ gives the CHSH inequality $|\langle B\rangle|\leq 2$ uniquely, it is shown that the hidden-variables model can describe only separable quantum mechanical states; this conclusion is in perfect agreement with the so-called Gisin's theorem which states that $|\langle B\rangle|\leq 2$ implies separable states.

Quantum contextuality and joint measurement of three observables of a qubit

Whereas complementarity manifests itself via two incompatible observables, quantum contextuality can only be revealed via the joint measurements among at least three observables. By incorporating unsharp measurements and joint measurements into a realistic model, we reestablish an inequality due to Liang, Spekkens, and Wiseman rigorously based on the assumption of noncontextuality alone. Its violation therefore unambiguously pinpoints the quantum contextuality of a two-level system. The maximal violation is attained by three triplewise jointly measurable observables that are pairwise jointly measured in an incompatible way. We also present the necessary and sufficient condition of triplewise joint measurability of three unbiased observables of a qubit.

One-step achievement of robust multipartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state and controlled-phase gate via Rydberg interaction

We present a proposal for generation of a robust tripartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state among three-individual neutral Rydberg atoms. By modulating the relation between two-photon detuning and Rydberg interaction strength $U_{ij}(r)$, an effective Raman coupling is obtained between the hyperfine ground states $|F=2,M=2\rangle$ of three $^{87}$Rb atoms and the Rydberg states $|rrr\rangle$ via the third-order perturbation theory. This method is also capable of implementing a three-qubit controlled-phase gate with each qubit encoded into the hyperfine ground states $|F=1,M=1\rangle$ and $|F=2,M=2\rangle$. As an extension, we generalize our scheme to the case of multipartite GHZ state and quantum gate in virtue of high-order perturbation theory.

Dissipative creation of three-dimensional entangled state in optical cavity via spontaneous emission

We present a dissipative protocol to engineer two $^{87}Rb$ atoms into a form of three-dimensional entangled state via spontaneous emission. The combination of coupling between ground states via microwave fields and dissipation induced by spontaneous emission make the current scheme deterministic and a stationary entangled state can always be achieved without state initialization. Moreover, this scheme can be straightforwardly generalized to preparation of an $N$-dimensional entangled state in principle.

Dynamical signature of edge state in the 1D Aubry-André model

Topological feature has become an intensively studied subject in many fields of physics. As a witness of topological phase, the edge states are topologically protected and may be helpful in quantum information processing. In this paper, we define a measure to quantify the dynamical localization of system and simulate the localization in the 1D Aubry-André model. We find an interesting connection between the edge states and the dynamical localization of the system, this connection may be used as a signature of edge state and topological phase.

Detecting and estimating continuous-variable entanglement by local orthogonal observables

Entanglement detection and estimation are fundamental in quantum information science. Compared with discrete-variable states, for which lots of efficient entanglement detection criteria and lower bounds of entanglement measures have been proposed, the continuous-variable entanglement is much less understood. Here we shall present a family of entanglement witnesses based on continuous-variable local orthogonal observables (CVLOOs) to detect and estimate entanglement of Gaussian and non-Gaussian states, especially for bound entangled states. By choosing an optimal set of CVLOOs our entanglement witness is equivalent to the realignment criterion and can be used to detect bound entanglement of a class of 2+2 mode Gaussian states. Via our entanglement witness, lower bounds of two typical entanglement measures for arbitrary two-mode continuous-variable states are obtained.

Long range universal quantum computation in large-size coupled cavity array independent of cavity number

We present a new approach for implementing a $\sqrt{\rm swap}$ gate between two spatially far apart sites connected by a large-size coupled cavity array as quantum bus. The duration is only related to the parity of cavity number but independent of a specific number of cavity, thus it is possible to process quantum information in an arbitrary long distance in principle without time varied. Referring to the recent experimental progresses on coupled-cavity array, we also make an assessment of the scalability and take the cavity number $N$ = 5 as an example to illustrate the robustness of our proposal via quantum process tomography.

Testing Leggett's Inequality Using Aharonov-Casher Effect

Bell's inequality is established based on local realism. The violation of Bell's inequality by quantum mechanics implies either locality or realism or both are untenable. Leggett's inequality is derived based on nonlocal realism. The violation of Leggett's inequality implies that quantum mechanics is neither local realistic nor nonlocal realistic. The incompatibility of nonlocal realism and quantum mechanics has been urrently confirmed by photon experiments. In our work, we propose to test Leggett's inequality using the Aharonov-Casher effect. In our scheme, four entangled particles emitted from two sources manifest a two-qubit-typed correlation that may result in the violation of the Leggett inequality, while satisfying the no-signaling condition for spacelike separation. Our scheme is tolerant to some local inaccuracies due to the topological nature of the Aharonov-Casher phase. The experimental implementation of our scheme can be possibly realized by a calcium atomic polarization interferometer experiment.

Frozen Gaussian quantum discord in photonic crystal cavity array system

Protecting quantum correlation from decoherence is one of the crucial issues in quantum information processing. It has been commonly recognized that any initial quantum correlation of a composite system diminishes asymptotically or abruptly to zero under local Markovian decoherence. Here we show that, contrary to this recognition, a noticeable Gaussian quantum discord of a continuous-variable bipartite system can be frozen in the steady state in the non-Markovian dynamics if each of the subsystems forms a localized mode with its local reservoir. The condition for this frozen quantum discord can be reached by appropriately engineering the structure of the reservoirs. The possible realization of our results in a coupled cavity array system formed by a photonic crystal is proposed.

Tripartite entangled pure states are tripartite nonlocal

Nonlocal correlations as revealed by the violations to Bell inequalities are incompatible with local models without any nonlocal correlations. However some tripartite entangled states, e.g., symmetric pure states, exhibit a stronger nonlocality even incompatible with hybrid local/nonlocal models allowing nonlocal correlations between any two parties. Here we propose a three-particle Hardy-type test without inequality, as illustrated by a gedanken experiment, that is failed by all non-signaling local models while is passed by all tripartite entangled asymmetric pure states. Our result implies that every tripartite entangled state, regardless of the dimensions of the underlying Hilbert spaces, passes a Hardy-type test and therefore is genuine tripartite nonlocal. Maximal success probability and a generalization to multipartite cases of our test are also presented.

All-Versus-Nothing Proof of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Steering

Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering is a form of quantum nonlocality intermediate between entanglement and Bell nonlocality. Although Schrödinger already mooted the idea in 1935, steering still defies a complete understanding. In analogy to "all-versus-nothing" proofs of Bell nonlocality, here we present a proof of steering without inequalities rendering the detection of correlations leading to a violation of steering inequalities unnecessary. We show that, given any two-qubit entangled state, the existence of certain projective measurement by Alice so that Bob's normalized conditional states can be regarded as two different pure states provides a criterion for Alice-to-Bob steerability. A steering inequality equivalent to the all-versus-nothing proof is also obtained. Our result clearly demonstrates that there exist many quantum states which do not violate any previously known steering inequality but are indeed steerable. Our method offers advantages over the existing methods for experimentally testing steerability, and sheds new light on the asymmetric steering problem.

Topological quantum phase transitions in the spin-singlet superconductor with Rashba and Dresselhaus (110) spin-orbit couplings

We examine the topological properties of a spin-singlet superconductor with Rashba and Dresselhaus (110) spin-orbit couplings. We demonstrate that there are several topological invariants in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) Hamiltonian by symmetry analysis. We use the Pfaffian invariant $\mathcal{P}$ for the particle-hole symmetry to demonstrate all the possible phase diagrams of the BdG Hamiltonian. We find that the edge spectrum is either Dirac cone or flat band which supports the emergence of the Majorana fermion in this system. For the Majorana flat bands, a higher symmetric BdG Hamiltonian is needed to make them topologically stable. The Pfaffian invariant $\mathcal{P}(k_{y})$ and the winding number $\mathcal{W}(k_{y})$ are used in determining the location of the Majorana flat bands.

Anomalous decoherence in a dissipative two-level system

We study systematically the non-Markovian decoherence dynamics of a dissipative two-level system, i.e., the so-called spin-boson model. It is interesting to find that the decoherence tends to be inhibited with the increase of the coupling strength between the system and the reservoir, which is contrary to the common recognition that a stronger coupling always induces a severer decoherence. This is attributed to the occurrence of a quantum phase transition (QPT). The relationship between this QPT and conventional delocalized-localized QPT is also discussed. Our result suggests a useful control method to overcome the detrimental effects of the reservoir to the system.

Test of Genuine Multipartite Nonlocality Without Inequality

In this letter we propose a set of conditions on the joint probabilities as a test of genuine multipartite nonlocality without inequality. Our test is failed by all non-signaling local models in which even nonlocal correlations among some observables (not all) are allowed as long as these correlations respect the non-signaling principle. A pass of our test by a state therefore indicates that this state cannot be simulated by any non-signaling local models, i.e., the state exhibits genuine multipartite nonlocality. It turns out that all entangled symmetric n-qubit ($n \geq 3$) states pass our test and therefore are n-way nonlocal. Also we construct two Bell-type inequalities from our proposed test whose violations indicate genuine multipartite nonlocal correlations.

Generating Many Majorana Modes via Periodic Driving: A Superconductor Model

Realizing Majorana modes (MMs) in condensed-matter systems is of vast experimental and theoretical interests, and some signatures of MMs have been measured already. To facilitate future experimental observations and to explore further applications of MMs, generating many MMs at ease in an experimentally accessible manner has become one important issue. This task is achieved here in a one-dimensional $p$-wave superconductor system with the nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions. In particular, a periodic modulation of some system parameters can induce an effective long-range interaction (as suggested by the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula) and may recover time-reversal symmetry already broken in undriven cases. By exploiting these two independent mechanisms at once we have established a general method in generating many Floquet MMs via periodic driving.

Broadcasting Quantum Fisher Information

It is well known that classical information can be cloned, but non-orthogonal quantum states cannot be cloned, and non-commuting quantum states cannot be broadcast. We conceive a scenario in which the object we want to broadcast is the statistical distinguishability, as quantified by quantum Fisher information, about a signal parameter encoded in quantum states. We show that quantum Fisher information cannot be cloned, whilst it might be broadcast even when the input states are non-commuting. This situation interpolates between cloning of classical information and no-broadcasting of quantum information, and indicates a hybrid way of information broadcasting which is of particular significance from both practical and theoretical perspectives.
