Studies of one- and two-hole states in the 2D t-J model via series expansions

We study one and two hole properties of the t-J model at half-filling on the square lattice using series expansion methods at T=0. The dispersion curve for one hole excitations is calculated and found to be qualitatively similar to that obtained by other methods, but the bandwidth for small $t/J$ is some 20% larger than given previously. We also obtain the binding energy and dispersion relation for two hole bound states. The lowest bound state as $t/J$ increases is found to be first d-wave, and then p-wave, in accordance with predictions based upon the Kohn-Luttinger effect. We also make a similar study for the $t-J_z$ model.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional Holstein model of spinless fermions

The one-dimensional Holstein model of spinless fermions interacting with dispersionless phonons is studied using a new variant of the density matrix renormalisation group. By examining various low-energy excitations of finite chains, the metal-insulator phase boundary is determined precisely and agrees with the predictions of strong coupling theory in the anti-adiabatic regime and is consistent with renormalisation group arguments in the adiabatic regime. The Luttinger liquid parameters, determined by finite-size scaling, are consistent with a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition.

Series Expansions for three-dimensional QED

Strong-coupling series expansions are calculated for the Hamiltonian version of compact lattice electrodynamics in (2+1) dimensions, with 4-component fermions. Series are calculated for the ground-state energy per site, the chiral condensate, and the masses of `glueball' and positronium states. Comparisons are made with results obtained by other techniques.

Spin-S bilayer Heisenberg models: Mean-field arguments and numerical calculations

Spin-S bilayer Heisenberg models (nearest-neighbor square lattice antiferromagnets in each layer, with antiferromagnetic interlayer couplings) are treated using dimer mean-field theory for general S and high-order expansions about the dimer limit for S=1, 3/2,...,4. We suggest that the transition between the dimer phase at weak intraplane coupling and the Neel phase at strong intraplane coupling is continuous for all S, contrary to a recent suggestion based on Schwinger boson mean-field theory. We also present results for S=1 layers based on expansions about the Ising limit: In every respect the S=1 bilayers appear to behave like S=1/2 bilayers, further supporting our picture for the nature of the order-disorder phase transition.

Series Expansions for the Massive Schwinger Model in Hamiltonian lattice theory

It is shown that detailed and accurate information about the mass spectrum of the massive Schwinger model can be obtained using the technique of strong-coupling series expansions. Extended strong-coupling series for the energy eigenvalues are calculated, and extrapolated to the continuum limit by means of integrated differential approximants, which are matched onto a weak-coupling expansion. The numerical estimates are compared with exact results, and with finite-lattice results calculated for an equivalent lattice spin model with long-range interactions. Both the heavy fermion and the light fermion limits of the model are explored in some detail.

The Coupled Cluster Method in Hamiltonian Lattice Field Theory

The coupled cluster or exp S form of the eigenvalue problem for lattice Hamiltonian QCD (without quarks) is investigated. A new construction prescription is given for the calculation of the relevant coupled cluster matrix elements with respect to an orthogonal and independent loop space basis. The method avoids the explicit introduction of gauge group coupling coefficients by mapping the eigenvalue problem onto a suitable set of character functions, which allows a simplified procedure. Using appropriate group theoretical methods, we show that it is possible to set up the eigenvalue problem for eigenstates having arbitrary lattice momentum and lattice angular momentum.

Convergent expansions for properties of the Heisenberg model for CaV$_4$O$_9$

We have carried out a wide range of calculations for the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model with nearest- and second-neighbor interactions on a two-dimensional lattice which describes the geometry of the vanadium ions in the spin-gap system CaV$_4$O$_9$. The methods used were convergent high-order perturbation expansions (``Ising'' and ``Plaquette'' expansions at $T=0$, as well as high-temperature expansions) for quantities such as the uniform susceptibility, sublattice magnetization, and triplet elementary excitation spectrum. Comparison with the data for CaV$_4$O$_9$ indicates that its magnetic properties are well described by nearest-neighbor exchange of about 200K in conjunction with second-neighbor exchange of about 100K.

Quantum Monte Carlo study of the one-dimensional Holstein model of spinless fermions

The Holstein model of spinless fermions interacting with dispersionless phonons in one dimension is studied by a Green's function Monte Carlo technique. The ground state energy, first fermionic excited state, density wave correlations, and mean lattice displacement are calculated for lattices of up to 16 sites, for one fermion per two sites, i.e., a half-filled band. Results are obtained for values of the fermion hopping parameter of $t=0.1 ω$, $ω$, and $10 ω$ where $ω$ is the phonon frequency. At a finite fermion-phonon coupling $g$ there is a transition from a metallic phase to an insulating phase in which there is charge-density-wave order. Finite size scaling is found to hold in the metallic phase and is used to extract the coupling dependence of the Luttinger liquid parameters, $u_ρ$ and $K_ρ$, the velocity of charge excitations and the correlation exponent, respectively. For free fermions ($g=0$) and for strong coupling ($g^2 \gg t ω$) our results agree well with known analytic results. For $t=ω$ and $t=10ω$ our results are inconsistent with the metal-insulator transition being a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition.\\

Universality for SU(2) Yang-Mills Theory in (2+1)D

The Green's Function Monte Carlo method of Chin et al is applied to SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in (2+1)D. Accurate measurements are obtained for the ground-state energy and mean plaquette value, and for various Wilson loops. The results are compared with series expansions and coupled cluster estimates, and with the Euclidean Monte Carlo results of Teper. A striking demonstration of universality between the Hamiltonian and Euclidean formulations is obtained.

Spin-Wave Theory and Finite-Size Scaling for the Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

Spin-wave perturbation theory for the Heisenberg antiferromagnet at zero temperature is used to compute the finite-lattice corrections to the ground state energy, the staggered magnetization and the energy gap. The dispersion relation, the spin-wave velocity and the bulk ground state energy to order $O(1/S^2)$ are also computed for the square lattice. The results agree very well with the predictions of Neuberger and Ziman and Fisher.
