Impact of the relativistic Cowling approximation on shear and interface modes of neutron stars

We investigate shear and interface modes excited in neutron stars with an elastic crust in the full general relativistic framework and compare them to the results obtained within the relativistic Cowling approximation. We observe that the Cowling approximation has virtually no impact on the frequencies or the eigenfunctions of the shear modes; in contrast, the interface modes that arise due to the discontinuities of the shear modulus experience a considerable shift in frequency when applying the Cowling approximation . Furthermore, we extend a scheme based on the properties of the phase of amplitude ratios, which allows us to estimate the damping times of slowly damped modes; our extension can provide an estimation of the damping time even if the features of the amplitude ratio are incomplete or if some of them violate the underlying linearity assumption. The proposed scheme is also computationally less expensive and numerically more robust and we provide accurate estimates as well as lower bounds for damping times of shear and interface modes. We estimate the damping times also via the quadrupole formula and find that it provides good order-of-magnitude estimates.

Estimates for Disk and Ejecta Masses Produced in Compact Binary Mergers

There is irresistible observational evidence that binary systems of compact objects with at least one neutron star are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts, as well as a production site for r-process elements, at least when some matter is ejected by the merger and an accretion disk is formed. The recent observations of gravitational waves in conjunction with electromagnetic counterparts fuel the need for models predicting the outcome of a given merger and the properties of the associated matter outflows as a function of the initial parameters of the binary. In this manuscript, we provide updated fitting formulae that estimate the disk mass for double neutron star binaries and ejecta masses for black hole-neutron star and double neutron star binaries, fitted to the results of numerical simulations. Our proposed fitting formulae improve on existing models by aiming for analytical simplicity, by covering a larger region of parameter space, and by accounting for regions of parameter space not covered by numerical simulations but with physically manifest merger outcomes.

Dynamics of Fast Rotating Neutron Stars: An Approach in the Hilbert Gauge

We describe a set of time evolution equations and its numerical implementation for the investigation of non-axisymmetric oscillations of rapidly rotating compact objects in full General Relativity, taking into account the contribution of a dynamic spacetime. We derive the perturbation equations for the spacetime in the Hilbert gauge, while the hydrodynamical evolution is based on perturbations of the energy-momentum tensor. In our numerical implementation, we use Kreiss-Oliger dissipation in order to achieve a stable time evolution. Our code features high accuracy at comparably low computational expense and we are able to extract the frequencies of non-axisymmetric modes of compact objects with rotation rates up to the Kepler limit.

Fast Rotating Relativistic Stars: Spectra and Stability without Approximation

We study oscillations and instabilities of relativistic stars using perturbation theory in general relativity and take into account the contribution of a dynamic spacetime. We present the oscillation spectrum as well as the critical values for the onset of the secular CFS instability of neutron stars, and propose universal relations for gravitational wave asteroseismology, which may help constrain the neutron star radius and/or the nuclear equation of state. The results are relevant for all stages during a neutron star's life but especially to nascent or remnant objects following a binary merger.

Seismology of adolescent neutron stars: Accounting for thermal effects and crust elasticity

We study the oscillations of relativistic stars, incorporating key physics associated with internal composition, thermal gradients and crust elasticity. Our aim is to develop a formalism which is able to account for the state-of-the-art understanding of the complex physics associated with these systems. As a first step, we build models using a modern equation of state including composition gradients and density discontinuities associated with internal phase-transitions (like the crust-core transition and the point where muons first appear in the core). In order to understand the nature of the oscillation spectrum, we carry out cooling simulations to provide realistic snapshots of the temperature distribution in the interior as the star evolves through adolescence. The associated thermal pressure is incorporated in the perturbation analysis, and we discuss the presence of $g$-modes arising as a result of thermal effects. We also consider interface modes due to phase-transitions and the gradual formation of the star's crust and the emergence of a set of shear modes.
