Issues and Opportunities in Exotic Hadrons

The last few years have been witness to a proliferation of new results concerning heavy exotic hadrons. Experimentally, many new signals have been discovered that could be pointing towards the existence of tetraquarks, pentaquarks, and other exotic configurations of quarks and gluons. Theoretically, advances in lattice field theory techniques place us at the cusp of understanding complex coupled-channel phenomena, modelling grows more sophisticated, and effective field theories are being applied to an ever greater range of situations. It is thus an opportune time to evaluate the status of the field. In the following, a series of high priority experimental and theoretical issues concerning heavy exotic hadrons is presented.

A novel algorithm for computing quark propagators for lattice hadron spectroscopy

We report on our progress in computing the excitation spectrum in Lattice QCD. We focus on the isospin 0, 1 and 2 channels using the stochastic LapH algorithm for the quark propagators. For the isospin-0 channel, a new glueball operator constructed from the stochastic LapH operator is included in the variational basis along with the isoscalar meson and pi-pi operators. A representative signal for each channel is presented and the feasibility of extending the calculations to larger lattices is discussed.

Two-particle Correlation Functions with Distilled Propagators

Correlation functions of the simplest multi-particle state will be presented using distilled quark propagators. The I=2 pi-pi state can be simulated without computing disconnected diagrams and thus is the simplest two-particle state that can be studied with quark sources placed on a single time-slice. We study the quality of the signals of this pi-pi correlation function using the quark-smearing guided distillation method. Results will be presented for pi-pi correlation functions computed on dynamical, anisotropic lattices.

Light hadron spectroscopy using domain wall valence quarks on an Asqtad sea

We calculate the light hadron spectrum in full QCD using two plus one flavor Asqtad sea quarks and domain wall valence quarks. Meson and baryon masses are calculated on a lattice of spatial size $L \approx 2.5$\texttt{fm}, and a lattice spacing of $a \approx 0.124$\texttt{fm}, for pion masses as light as $m_π\approx 300$\texttt{MeV}, and compared with the results by the MILC collaboration with Asqtad valence quarks at the same lattice spacing. Two- and three-flavor chiral extrapolations of the baryon masses are performed using both continuum and mixed-action heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Both the three-flavor and two-flavor functional forms describe our lattice results, although the low-energy constants from the next-to-leading order SU(3) fits are inconsistent with their phenomenological values. Next-to-next-to-leading order SU(2) continuum formulae provide a good fit to the data and yield and extrapolated nucleon mass consistent with experiment, but the convergence pattern indicates that even our lightest pion mass may be at the upper end of the chiral regime. Surprisingly, our nucleon masses are essentially lineaer in $m_π$ over our full range of pion masses, and we show this feature is common to all recent dynamical calculations of the nucleon mass. The origin of this linearity is not presently understood, and lighter pion masses and increased control of systematic errors will be needed to resolve this puzzling behavior.

Multi-hadron operators with all-to-all quark propagators

Hadron spectroscopy on dynamical configurations are faced with the difficulties of dealing with the mixing of single particle states and multi-hadron states (for large spatial volumes and light dynamical quarks masses). It is conceivable that explicit multi-hadron interpolating operators will be necessary for obtaining sufficiently good overlap onto multi-hadron states in order to extract the low-lying excitation spectrum. We explore here the feasibility of using four noise diluted all-to-all quark propagators in the construction of explicit two-hadron operators on quenched, anisotropic lattices. Our longer term goal is to use these operators on large anisotropic, dynamical configurations for hadron spectroscopy.

Group Theoretical Construction of Nucleon Operators using All-to-All Quark Propagators

We describe a method to construct irreducible baryon operators using all-to-all quark propagators. It was demonstrated earlier that a large basis of extended baryon operators on anisotropic, quenched lattices can be used to reliably extract the masses of 5 or more excited states in the nucleon channel. All-to-all quark propagators are expected to be needed when studying these excited states on light, dynamical configurations because contributions from multi-particle states are expected to be significant. The dilution method is used to approximate the all-to-all quark propagators. Low-lying eigenmodes can also be used if necessary. For efficient computation of matrix elements of the interpolating operators, the algorithms should exploit the fact that many extended baryon operators can be obtained from the different linear combinations of three-quark colour-singlet operators. The sparseness of the diluted noise vectors also afford several computation simplifications. Some preliminary results are presented for nucleon effective masses.

The QCD String Spectrum and Conformal Field Theory

The low energy excitation spectrum of the critical Wilson surface is discussed between the roughening transition and the continuum limit of lattice QCD. The fine structure of the spectrum is interpreted within the framework of two-dimensional conformal field theory.

Scaling and Further Tests of Heavy Meson Decay Constant Determinations from Nonrelativistic QCD

We present results for the B_s meson decay constant f_{B_s} from simulations at three lattice spacings in the range a^{-1}=1.1 to 2.6 GeV using NRQCD heavy quarks and clover light quarks in the quenched approximation. We study scaling of this quantity and check the consistency between mesons decaying from rest and from a state with nonzero spatial momentum. The cancellation of power law contributions that arise in the NRQCD formulation of heavy-light currents is discussed. On the coarsest lattice the D_s meson decay constant f_{D_s} is calculated. Our best values for the decay constants are given by f_{B_s} = 187(4)(4)(11)(2)(7)(6) MeV and f_{D_s} = 223(6)(31)(38)(23)(9)(^{+3}_{-1}) MeV.

Quark Confinement and Surface Critical Phenomena

Surface critical phenomena and the related onset of Goldstone modes probe the fundamental properties of the confining flux in Quantum Chromodynamics. New ideas on surface roughening and their implications for lattice studies of quark confinement are presented. Problems with the oversimplified string description of the Wilson flux sheet are discussed.

The Heavy Hybrid Spectrum from NRQCD and the Born-Oppenheimer Approximation

The spectrum of heavy-quark hybrids is studied in the leading Born-Oppenheimer (LBO) approximation and using leading-order NRQCD simulations with an improved gluon action on anisotropic lattices. The masses of four hybrid states are obtained from our simulations for lattice spacings 0.1 fm and 0.2 fm and are compared to the LBO predictions obtained using previously-determined glue-excited static potentials. The consistency of results from the two approaches reveals a compelling physical picture for heavy-quark hybrid states.

Ab Initio Study of Hybrid b-bar-gb Mesons

Hybrid b-bar-gb molecules in which the heavy b-bar-b pair is bound together by the excited gluon field g are studied using the Born-Oppenheimer expansion and numerical simulations. The consistency of results from the two approaches reveals a simple and compelling physical picture for heavy hybrid states.

Bottom and Charm quark masses from lattice NRQCD

We present new values for the $\bar{MS}$ masses of $b$ and $c$ quarks based on lattice NRQCD simulations of the $Υ(b\bar{b})$ and $ψ(c\bar{c})$ systems. These include three measurements of the $b$ mass based on quenched simulations with lattice spacings ranging from 0.05fm to 0.15fm, which we find to be largely independent of lattice spacing. In addition, we find a consistent value from an unquenched simulation at 0.08fm.

Where is the string limit in QCD?

The energies of glue in the presence of a static quark-antiquark pair are calculated for separations r ranging from 0.1 fm to 4 fm and for various quark-antiquark orientations on the lattice. Our simulations use an improved gauge-field action on anisotropic space-time lattices. Discretization errors and finite volume effects are studied. We find that the spectrum does not exhibit the expected onset of the universal pi/r Goldstone excitations of the effective QCD string, even for r as large as 4 fm. Our results cast serious doubts on the validity of treating glue in terms of a fluctuating string for r below 2 fm. Retardation effects in the Upsilon system are also studied by comparing level splittings from the Born-Oppenheimer approximation with those directly obtained in simulations.

A study of hybrid quarkonium using lattice QCD

The hybrid quarkonium states are studied using the Born-Oppenheimer expansion. The first step in this expansion is the determination of the energy levels of the gluons in the presence of a static quark-antiquark pair as a function of the quark-antiquark separation. The spectrum of such gluonic excitations is determined from first principles using lattice QCD.

Gluon excitations of the static quark potential and the hybrid quarkonium spectrum

A comprehensive determination of the rich, low-lying spectrum of gluonic excitations in the presence of a static quark-antiquark pair is presented. Our results are obtained from several simulations on anisotropic lattices using an improved action and a large set of gluonic operators. The hybrid quarkonium states are studied in the quenched approximation using the Born-Oppenheimer expansion and nonrelativistic lattice QCD.

Bag Picture of the Excited QCD Vacuum with Static Q-Qbar Source

The gluon excitations of the QCD vacuum are investigated in the presence of a static quark-antiquark source. It is shown that the ground state potential and the excitation spectrum of dynamical gluon degrees of freedom, as determined in our lattice simulations, agree remarkably well with model predictions based on the diaelectric properties of the confining vacuum described as a dual superconductor. The strong chromoelectric field of the static Q-Qbar source creates a bubble (bag) in the condensed phase where weakly interacting gluon modes can be excited. Some features and predictions of the bag model are presented and the chromoelectric vortex limit at large quark-antiquark separation (string formation) is briefly discussed.

A New Determination of M_b Using Lattice QCD

Recent results from lattice QCD simulations provide a realistic picture, based upon first principles, of~$Υ$ physics. We combine these results with the experimentally measured mass of the $Υ$~meson to obtain an accurate and reliable value for the $b$-quark's pole mass. We use two different methods, each of which yields a mass consistent with $M_b = 5.0(2)$~GeV. This corresponds to a bare mass of $M_b^0 = 4.0(1)$~GeV in our lattice theory and an $\msbar$~mass of $M_b^\msbar(M_b)=4.0(1)$~GeV. We discuss the implications of this result for the $c$-quark mass. ******************************************************************************* THIS IS THE VERSION WHICH WILL BE PUBLISHED IN PRL. SUBSTANTIAL MATERIAL HAS BEEN ADDED, INCLUDING RESULTS WITH DYNAMICAL FERMIONS AND A CALCULATION OF THE MSBAR MASS. *******************************************************************************
