Comparative study of the electronic structures of the In and Sn/In2O3 (111) interfaces

The electronic structure of the transparent semiconductor In2O3 has been studied by angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy upon deposition of metallic indium and also tin on the surface of the semiconductor. By deposition of metallic indium on In2O3 (111) single crystals, we detected the formation of a free-electron like band of effective mass (0.38+-0.05) m0. At low coverages, metallic In shifts the Fermi level of In2O3 to higher energies and a new electronic state forms at the metal/semiconductor interface. This state of two-dimensional character (2D-electron gas) is completely responsible for the electrical conduction in In2O3 (111) at the surface region and has a band dispersion, which does not correspond to the previously found surface accumulation layers in this material. Despite the similarity of the electronic properties of In and Sn, a larger downward banding was observed by Sn coverage, which was not accompanied by the appearance of the surface state.

Anomalies in the superconducting dome of the Bi-cuprates

We report characterization results by energy dispersive x-ray analysis and AC-susceptibility for a statistically relevant number of single layer Bi-cuprate single crystals. We show that the two structurally quite different modifications of the single-layered Bi-cuprate, namely (La,Pb=0.4)-Bi2201 and La-Bi2201, exhibit anomalies in the superconducting transition temperature at certain hole doping, e.g. at 1/8 holes per Cu. These doping values agree well with the 'magic doping fractions' found in the temperature dependent resistance of LSCO by Komiya et al. This new set of findings suggests that all these anomalies are generic for the hole-doped high-temperature superconductors.

Structural behavior of Pb$_y$Bi$_{1.95-y}$Sr$_{1.49}$La$_{0.4}$Cu$_{1.15}$O$_{6+\delta}$ for 0<y<0.53

In the Bi cuprates, the presence of a near 1$\times$5 superstructure is well known. Usually, this superstructure is suppressed by the substitution of lead, but there have been reports of a phase separation in so called {\alpha} and {\beta} phases. This paper shows in high detail time how and why the phase separation develops and what happens to the quasi-1$\times$5 superstructure upon lead substitution. For this purpose, the lanthanum- and lead-substituted single-layered superconductor Bi$_{2+z}$Sr$_{2-z}$CuO$_{6+\delta}$ has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and low-energy electron diffraction. The La content was kept constant at slightly under-doped concentration while the Pb content was changed systematically. Thermodynamic considerations show that a phase mixture of {\alpha} and {\beta} phases is inevitable.

Coupling to a phononic mode in $Bi_{2-x}Pb_xSr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$: Angle-resolved photoemission

The kink in the dispersion and the drop in the width observed by angle-resolved photoemission in the nodal direction of the Brillouin zone of $\mathrm{Bi_{2-x}Pb_xSr_2CaCu_2O_{8+ δ}}$ (abbreviated as (Pb)Bi2212) has attracted broad interest [1-3]. Surprisingly optimally lead-doped (Pb)Bi2212 with $\mathrm{T_C>89K}$ as well as the shadow band were not investigated so far, although the origin of the kink and the drop is still under strong debate. In this context a resonant magnetic-mode scenario and an electron-phonon coupling scenario are discussed controversially. Here we analyze the relevant differences between both scenarios and conclude that the kink and the drop are caused by a coupling of the electronic system to a phononic mode at least in the nodal direction. It is found that besides the dispersion and the drop in the width also the peak height as a new criterion can be used to define the energy scale of the interaction, giving a new means for a precise and consistent determination of the kink energy.

Charge modulation driven Fermi surface of Pb-Bi2201

It is well known that the (1x5) superstructure of Bi cuprate superconductors will be suppressed due to optimum doping with Pb. Nevertheless, a Fermi surface map of (Pb,La)-Bi2201 (Pb = 0.4 and La = 0.4) determined by angular resolved photoemission (ARPES) revealed additional Fermi surface features. Low energy electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction of these samples showed no sign of any superstructure. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), on the other hand, revealed two distinct modulations of the charge density, one of (1x32) and a second of (6x6) periodicity. The wave vectors of both modulations have been extracted and used to simulate the corresponding Fermi surface, which is compared with the experimental one. The origin of these modulations is discussed in terms of dopant ordering.

Evolution of the density of states at EF of Bi2-yPbySr2-xLaxCuO6+d and Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+d cuprates with hole doping

Bi2Sr2-xLaxCuO6+d and Bi2-yPbySr2-xLaxCuO6+d high-Tc superconductors in a wide doping range from overdoped to heavily underdoped were studied by X-ray absorption and photo-emission spectroscopy. The hole concentration p was determined by an analysis of the Cu L3-absorption edge. Besides the occupied density of states derived from photoemission, the un-occupied density of states was determined from the prepeak of the O K-absorption edge. Both, the occupied as well as the unoccupied density of states reveal the same dependence on hole doping, i.e. a continuous increase with increasing doping in the hole underdoped region and a constant density in the hole overdoped region. By comparing these results of single-layer BSLCO with previous results on single-layer LSCO it could be argued that besides the localized holes on Cu sites the CuO2-planes consist of two types of doped holes, from which the so-called mobile holes determine the intensity of the prepeak of the O 1s absorption edge.

Strong spin triplet contribution of the first removal state in the insulating regime of Bi2Sr2Ca1-xYxCu2O8+delta

The experimental dispersion of the first removal state in the insulating regime of Bi2Sr2Ca1-xYxCu2O8+delta is found to differ significantly from that of other parent materials: oxyclorides and La2CuO4 . For Y-contents of 0.92 > x > 0.55 due to nonstoichiometric effects in the Bi-O layers, the hole concentration in the CuO2 -layers is almost constant and on the contrary the crystal lattice parameters a,b,c change very strongly. This (a,b) parameter increase and c parameter decrease results in an unconventional three peak structure at (0,0);(pi/2, pi/2);(pi,pi) for x=0.92. We can describe the experimental data only beyond the framework of the 3-band pd-model involving the representations of a new triplet counterpart for the Zhang-Rice singlet state.

Luttinger liquid phenomenology and angle resolved photoemission for single layer $\chem{Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ}}$ high--temperature superconductor

Recently observed splitting in angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on $\chem{Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ}}$ high--temperature superconductor (Janowitz C. {\it et al.}, {\it Europhys. Lett.}, {\bf 60} (2002) 615) is interpreted within the phenomenological Luttinger--liquid framework, in which both the non--Fermi liquid scaling exponent of the spectral function and the spin--charge separation are introduced. The anomalous Green function with adjustable parameters fits very well to the Fermi edge and the low--energy part of ARPES along the $Γ-M$ line in the Brillouin zone. In contrast to one--dimensional models with Luttinger--liquid behavior we find that both the anomalous scaling $α$ and the parameter $δ$ describing the spin--charge separation are momentum dependent. The higher--energy part of the spectra is not accounted for by this simple Luttinger--liquid form of the Green function. In this energy regime additional scattering processes are plausible to produce the experimentally observed wide incoherent background, which diminishes as the inverse of the energy.

Dependence of the gap parameter on the number of CuO2 layers in a unit cell of optimally doped BSCCO, TBCCO, HBCCO and HSCCO

We have measured the superconducting gap Ds in optimally doped samples of BSCCO, TBCCO, HBCCO and HSCCO by Andreev and tunnelling spectroscopy and by ARPES. We have found that the low-temperature value of the gap within experimental errors is linearly increasing with the number n of CuO2 layers in the unit cell of the investigated HTSC-families (n < 4)

Systematic X-ray absorption study of hole doping in BSCCO - phases

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) on the O 1s threshold was applied to Bi-based, single crystalline high temperature superconductors (HTc's), whose hole densities in the CuO2 planes was varied by different methods. XAS gives the intensity of the so-called pre-peak of the O 1s line due to the unoccupied part of the Zhang-Rice (ZR) singlet state. The effects of variation of the number n of CuO2 - planes per unit cell (n = 1,2,3) and the effect of La-substitution for Sr for the n = 1 and n = 2 phase were studied systematically. Furthermore the symmetry of the states could be probed by the polarization of the impinging radiation.

Unusual electronic ground state of a prototype cuprate: band splitting of single CuO_2-plane Bi_2 Sr_(2-x) La_x CuO_(6+delta)

By in-situ change of polarization a small splitting of the Zhang-Rice singlet state band near the Fermi level has been resolved for optimum doped (x=0.4) Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ at the (pi,0)-point (R.Manzke et al. PRB 63, R100504 (2001). Here we treat the momentum dependence and lineshape of the split band by photoemission in the EDC-mode with very high angular and energy resolution. The splitting into two destinct emissions could also be observed over a large portion of the major symmetry line $Γ$M, giving the dispersion for the individual contributions. Since bi-layer effects can not be present in this single-layer material the results have to be discussed in the context of one-particle removal spectral functions derived from current theoretical models. The most prominent are microscopic phase separation including striped phase formation, coexisting antiferromagnetic and incommensurate charge-density-wave critical fluctuations coupled to electrons (hot spots) or even spin charge separation within the Luttinger liquid picture, all leading to non-Fermi liquid like behavior in the normal state and having severe consequences on the way the superconducting state forms. Especially the possibilty of observing spinon and holon excitations is discussed.

Fermi surface and superconducting gap of triple-layered Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d

We present a comprehensive study performed with high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on triple-layered Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+d single crystals. By measurements above TC the Fermi surface topology defined by the Fermi level crossings of the CuO2-derived band was determined. A hole-like Fermi surface as for single and double-CuO2 layered Bi-based cuprates is found, giving new input to the current debate of the general Fermi surface topology of the high Tc superconductors. Furthermore, we present measurements of the superconducting gap of Bi-2223 and show that there are clear indications for a strong anisotropy of the superconducting gap. The universal properties of this phase in comparison to the other Bi-based cuprates will be discussed.

Fermi surface map of the single-layer Bi-cuprate Bi_2Sr_(2-x)La_xCuO_(6+delta) at optimal doping

A first Fermi surface map of a single-layer high-Tc superconductor is presented. The experiments were carried out on optimally doped Bi_2Sr_(2-x)La_xCuO_(6+delta)(x=0.40) with synchrotron radiation which allow to discuss in detail the strong polarisation dependence of the emissions near the Fermi edge. For the cuprates only little is known about the impact of the electron-photon matrix element determining the photoelectron intensity. For the example of the model layered superconductor Bi_2Sr_(2-x)La_xCuO_(6+delta)it will be demonstrated that the polarization geometry has significant influence on the energy distribution curves at EF and consequently also for the determination of the topology and character of the Fermi surface (FS) by angle-resolved photoemission. For further clarification also a FS map of the n=2 material Bi-2212 has been measured applying a different polarisation geometry as previously used by Saini et al.. In the context of the current debate on the character of the Fermi surface of Bi-cuprates our results confirm a hole-like Fermi surface for n=1 as well as n=2 material, what might be the universal FS for high-Tc superconductors.

Band structure of MoS_2, MoSe_2, and alpha-MoTe_2: Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations

In this work the complete valence-band structure of the molybdenum dichalcogenides MoS_2, MoSe_2, and alpha-MoTe_2 is presented and discussed in comparison. The valence bands have been studied using both angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) with synchrotron radiation, as well as, ab-initio band-structure calculations. The ARPES measurements have been carried out in the constant-final-state (CFS) mode. The results of the calculations show in general very good agreement with the experimentally determined valence-band structures allowing for a clear identification of the observed features. The dispersion of the valence bands as a function of the perpendicular component k_perp of the wave vector reveals a decreasing three-dimensional character from MoS_2 to alpha-MoTe_2 which is attributed to an increasing interlayer distance in the three compounds. The effect of this k_perp dispersion on the determination of the exact dispersion of the individual states as a function of k_parallel is discussed. By performing ARPES in the CFS mode the k_parallel-component for off-normal emission spectra can be determined. The corresponding k_perp-value is obtained from the symmetry of the spectra along the GammaA, KH, and ML line, respectively.

Novel Fine-Structure in the Low-Energy Excitation Spectrum of a High-Tc Superconductor by Polarization Dependent Photoemission

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is performed on single crystals of the single-layer high-Tc superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2-x)La(x)CuO(6+d) at optimal doping (x=0.4) in order to study in great detail the Zhang-Rice (ZR) singlet band at the Fermi level. Besides the high crystal quality the advantages of a single-layer material are the absence of bilayer effects and the distinct reduction of thermal broadening. Due to the high energy and angle resolution and, most important, due to the controlled variation of the polarization vector of the synchrotron radiation the emission from the ZR singlet band reveals a distinct fine-structure. It consists of two maxima, the first showing only weak and the second at EF extremely strong polarization dependence. However, our observation has enormous consequences for line shape analyses and the determination of pseudo gaps by photoemission.

Natural linewidth analysis of d-band photoemission from Ag(110)

We report a high-resolution angle-resolved study of photoemission linewidths observed for Ag(110). A careful data analysis yields k$-resolved upper limits for the inverse inelastic lifetimes of $d$-holes at the X-point of the bulk band structure. At the upper $d$-band edge the hole-lifetime is $\tau_h \geq 22 $fs, i.e. more than one order of magnitude larger than predicted for a free-electron gas. Following calculations for $d$-hole dynamics in Cu (I.\ Campillo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., in press) we interpret the lifetime enhancement by a small scattering cross-section of $d$- and $sp$-states below the Fermi level. With increasing distance to $E_F$ the $d$-hole lifetimes get shorter because of the rapidly increasing density of d-states and contributions of intra-$d$-band scattering processes, but remain clearly above free-electron-model predictions.

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy of Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 - a revisit

We have investigated the lowest binding-energy electronic structure of the model cuprate Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our data from about 80 cleavages of Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 single crystals give a comprehensive, self-consistent picture of the nature of the first electron-removal state in this model undoped CuO_2-plane cuprate. Firstly, we show a strong dependence on the polarization of the excitation light which is understandable in the context of the matrix element governing the photoemission process, which gives a state with the symmetry of a Zhang-Rice singlet. Secondly, the strong, oscillatory dependence of the intensity of the Zhang-Rice singlet on the exciting photon-energy is shown to be consistent with interference effects connected with the periodicity of the crystal structure in the crystallographic c-direction. Thirdly, we measured the dispersion of the first electron-removal states along G->(pi,pi) and G->(pi,0), the latter being controversial in the literature, and have shown that the data are best fitted using an extended t-J-model, and extract the relevant model parameters. An analysis of the spectral weight of the first ionization states for different excitation energies within the approach used by Leung et al. (Phys. Rev. B56, 6320 (1997)) results in a strongly photon-energy dependent ratio between the coherent and incoherent spectral weight. The possible reasons for this observation and its physical implications are discussed.

The normal state Fermi surface of pristine and Pb-doped Bi2212 from ARPES measurements and its photon energy independence

We address the question as to whether the topology of the normal state Fermi surface of Bi2212 - as seen in angle resolved photoemission - depends on the photon energy used to measure it. High resolution photoemission spectra and Fermi surface maps from pristine and Pb-doped Bi2212 are presented, recorded using both polarised and unpolarised radiation of differing energies. The data show clearly that no main band crosses the Fermi surface along the GMZ direction in reciprocal space, even for a photon energy of 32 eV, thus ruling out the existence of a G-centred, electron-like Fermi surface in this archetypal high Tc superconductor. The true topology of the normal state Fermi surface remains that of hole-like barrels centred at the X,Y points of the Brillouin zone.
