Efficient InGaN-based Red Light-Emitting Diodes by Modulating Trench Defects

Trench defects in multi-quantum wells (MQWs) have been considered as flawed structures that severely degrade the internal quantum efficiency of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in the past. In this research, trench defects are innovatively modulated into the structure to enhance the efficiency of red InGaN LEDs. Specifically, dual-color MQWs structures are grown with green MQWs at the bottom and red MQWs at the top. When high-density trench defects are introduced into the green MQWs, the upper red MQWs exhibit a significant wavelength redshift of 68 nm and approximately 6-fold luminescence enhancement compared to those without trench defects. The wavelength redshift is attributed to the increased indium incorporation due to the strain relaxation effect of trench defects. Moreover, the luminescence enhancement originates from the strong emission of the red MQWs inside trench defects. The mechanisms behind the superior luminescent properties of red MQWs within trench defects are explored in detail. Red InGaN LEDs with an internal quantum efficiency of 16.4% are achieved by modulating the trench defects. The method of achieving InGaN-based red emission by introducing trench defects is simple and reproducible, requiring no additional substrate designs. This research provides a novel pathway toward achieving high-efficiency red InGaN LEDs.

Web-Based Methods for X-ray and Photoelectron Spectroscopies

We present a simplified web-based application for simulating x-ray and photoelectron spectra of transition metals, built around the notion that web-based applications lower the bar for novice users. The application provides a simple interface to simulate x-ray absorption spectroscopy, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, incorporating the effects of local electronic interactions, which give rise to multiplets, spin-orbit coupling, crystal field effects, and ligand hybridization/charge transfer. Results can be obtained that highlight the key role of photon polarization.

High-Resolution Channel Estimation for Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Assisted MmWave Communications

In this paper, we study the high-resolution channel estimation problem for intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communications, which is a prerequisite to guarantee further high-rate data transmission. Considering the typical sparsity of mmWave channels, we formulate the cascaded channel estimation problem from a sparse signal recovery perspective, and then propose a novel two-step cascaded channel estimation protocol to estimate the cascaded user-IRS-base station channel with high-resolution for IRS-assisted mmWave MIMO communications. More specifically, the first step is to estimate the coarse angular domain information (ADI) and further establish the robust uplink by beam training. In the second step, by exploiting the coarse ADI, an adaptive grid matching pursuit (AGMP) algorithm is proposed to estimate the high-resolution cascaded channel state information (CSI) with low complexity. Simulation results verify that the proposed two-step channel estimation protocol significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art scheme, i.e., beam training based channel estimation, and meanwhile can reap near-optimal system performance achieved by perfect CSI.

Pressure Effects on the 4f Electronic Structure of Light Lanthanides

Using the satellite structure of the $L_{\gamma1}$ line in non-resonant x-ray emission spectra, we probe the high-pressure evolution of the bare 4f signature of the early light lanthanides at ambient temperature. For Ce and Pr the satellite peak experiences a sudden reduction concurrent with their respective volume collapse (VC) transitions. These new experimental results are supported by calculations using state-of-the-art extended atomic structure codes for Ce and Pr, and also for Nd, which does not exhibit a VC. Our work suggests that changes to the 4f occupation are more consistently associated with evolution of the satellite than is the reduction of the 4f moment. Indeed, we show that in the case of Ce, mixing of a higher atomic angular momentum state, driven by the increased hybridization, acts to obscure the expected satellite reduction. These measurements emphasize the importance of a unified study of a full set of microscopic observables to obtain the most discerning test of the underlying, fundamental f-electron phenomena at high pressures.

RIXS studies of magnons and bimagnons in the lightly doped cuprate La2-xSrxCuO4

We investigated the doping dependence of magnetic excitations in the lightly doped cuprate La2-xSrxCuO4 via combined studies of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu L3-edge and theoretical calculations. With increasing doping, the magnon dispersion is found to be essentially unchanged, but the spectral width broadens and the spectral weight varies differently at different momenta. Near the Brillouin zone center, we directly observe bimagnon excitations which possess the same energy scale and doping dependence as previously observed by Raman spectroscopy. They disperse weakly in energy-momentum space, and are consistent with a bimagnon dispersion that is renormalized by the magnon-magnon interaction at the zone center.

Shifted Character Sums with Multiplicative Coefficients, II

Let $f(n)$ be a multiplicative function with $|f(n)|\leq 1, q$ be a prime number and $a$ be an integer with $(a, q)=1, χ$ be a non-principal Dirichlet character modulo $q$. Let $\varepsilon$ be a sufficiently small positive constant, $A$ be a large constant, $q^{\frac12+\varepsilon}\ll N\ll q^A$. In this paper, we shall prove that $$ \sum_{n\leq N}f(n)χ(n+a)\ll N\frac{\log\log q}{\log q} $$ and that $$ \sum_{n\leq N}f(n)χ(n+a_1)\cdotsχ(n+a_t)\ll N\frac{\log\log q}{\log q}, $$ where $t\geq 2, a_1, \ldots, a_t$ are distinct integers modulo $q$.

Polarization and magnetization dynamics of a field-driven multiferroic structure

We consider a multiferroic chain with a linear magnetoelectric coupling induced by the electrostatic screening at the ferroelectric/ferromagnet interface. We study theoretically the dynamic ferroelectric and magnetic response to external magnetic and electric fields by utilizing an approach based on coupled Landau- Khalatnikov and finite-temperature Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations. Additionally, we compare with Monte Carlo calculations. It is demonstrated that for material parameters corresponding to BaTiO3/Fe the polarization and the magnetization are controllable by external magnetic and electric fields respectively.
