The observation of the Crab Nebula with LHAASO-KM2A for the performance study

As a sub-array of the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO), KM2A is mainly designed to cover a large fraction of the northern sky to hunt for gamma-ray sources at energies above 10 TeV. Even though the detector construction is still underway, a half of the KM2A array has been operating stably since the end of 2019. In this paper, we present the pipeline of KM2A data analysis and the first observation on the Crab Nebula, a standard candle in very high energy gamma-ray astronomy. We detect gamma-ray signals from the Crab Nebula in both energy ranges of 10$-$100 TeV and $>$100 TeV with high significance, by analyzing the KM2A data of 136 live days between December 2019 and May 2020. With the observations, we test the detector performance including angular resolution, pointing accuracy and cosmic ray background rejection power. The energy spectrum of the Crab Nebula in the energy range 10-250 TeV fits well with a single power-law function dN/dE =(1.13$\pm$0.05$_{stat}$$\pm$0.08$_{sys}$)$\times$10$^{-14}$$\cdot$(E/20TeV)$^{-3.09\pm0.06_{stat}\pm0.02_{sys}}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ TeV$^{-1}$. It is consistent with previous measurements by other experiments. This opens a new window of gamma-ray astronomy above 0.1 PeV through which ultrahigh-energy gamma-ray new phenomena, such as cosmic PeVatrons, might be discovered.

Interaction of Individual Skyrmions in Nanostructured Cubic Chiral Magnet

We report the direct evidence of field-dependent character of the interaction between individual magnetic skyrmions as well as between skyrmions and edges in B20-type FeGe nanostripes observed by means of high resolution Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that above certain critical values of external magnetic field the character of such long-range skyrmion interactions change from attraction to repulsion. Experimentally measured equilibrium inter-skyrmion and skrymion-edge distances as function of applied magnetic field shows quantitative agreement with the results of micromagnetic simulations. Important role of demagnetizing fields and internal symmetry of three-dimensional magnetic skyrmions are discussed in details.

New prototype scintillator detector for the Tibet AS$γ$ Experiment

The hybrid Tibet AS array was successfully constructed in 2014. It has 4500 m$^{2}$ underground water Cherenkov pools used as the muon detector (MD) and 789 scintillator detectors covering 36900 m$^{2}$ as the surface array. At 100 TeV, cosmic-ray background events can be rejected by approximately 99.99\%, according to the full Monte Carlo (MC) simulation for $γ$-ray observations. In order to use the muon detector efficiently, we propose to extend the surface array area to 72900 m$^{2}$ by adding 120 scintillator detectors around the current array to increase the effective detection area. A new prototype scintillator detector is developed via optimizing the detector geometry and its optical surface, by selecting the reflective material and adopting dynode readout. This detector can meet our physics requirements with a positional non-uniformity of the output charge within 10\% (with reference to the center of the scintillator), time resolution FWHM of $\sim$2.2 ns, and dynamic range from 1 to 500 minimum ionization particles.

SPIDERS: Selection of spectroscopic targets using AGN candidates detected in all-sky X-ray surveys

SPIDERS (SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources) is an SDSS-IV survey running in parallel to the eBOSS cosmology project. SPIDERS will obtain optical spectroscopy for large numbers of X-ray-selected AGN and galaxy cluster members detected in wide area eROSITA, XMM-Newton and ROSAT surveys. We describe the methods used to choose spectroscopic targets for two sub-programmes of SPIDERS: X-ray selected AGN candidates detected in the ROSAT All Sky and the XMM-Newton Slew surveys. We have exploited a Bayesian cross-matching algorithm, guided by priors based on mid-IR colour-magnitude information from the WISE survey, to select the most probable optical counterpart to each X-ray detection. We empirically demonstrate the high fidelity of our counterpart selection method using a reference sample of bright well-localised X-ray sources collated from XMM-Newton, Chandra and Swift-XRT serendipitous catalogues, and also by examining blank-sky locations. We describe the down-selection steps which resulted in the final set of SPIDERS-AGN targets put forward for spectroscopy within the eBOSS/TDSS/SPIDERS survey, and present catalogues of these targets. We also present catalogues of ~12000 ROSAT and ~1500 XMM-Newton Slew survey sources which have existing optical spectroscopy from SDSS-DR12, including the results of our visual inspections. On completion of the SPIDERS program, we expect to have collected homogeneous spectroscopic redshift information over a footprint of ~7500 deg$^2$ for >85 percent of the ROSAT and XMM-Newton Slew survey sources having optical counterparts in the magnitude range 17<r<22.5, producing a large and highly complete sample of bright X-ray-selected AGN suitable for statistical studies of AGN evolution and clustering.

Integrated cladding-pumped multi-core, few-mode erbium-doped fibre amplifier for space-division multiplexed communications

Space-division multiplexing (SDM), whereby multiple spatial channels in multimode and multicore optical fibers are used to increase the total transmission capacity per fiber, is being investigated to avert a data capacity crunch and reduce the cost per transmitted bit. With the number of channels employed in SDM transmission experiments continuing to rise, there is a requirement for integrated SDM components that are scalable. Here, we demonstrate a cladding-pumped SDM erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) that consists of six uncoupled multimode erbium-doped cores. Each core supports three spatial modes, which enables the EDFA to amplify a total of 18 spatial channels simultaneously with a single pump diode and a complexity similar to a single-mode EDFA. The amplifier delivers more than 20-dBm total output power per core and less than 7-dB noise figure over the C-band. This cladding-pumped EDFA enables combined space-division and wavelength-division multiplexed transmission over multiple multimode fiber spans.

A powerful flare from Sgr A* confirms the synchrotron nature of the X-ray emission

We present the first fully simultaneous fits to the NIR and X-ray spectral slope (and its evolution) during a very bright flare from Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole at the Milky Way's center. Our study arises from ambitious multi-wavelength monitoring campaigns with XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and SINFONI. The average multi-wavelength spectrum is well reproduced by a broken power-law with $Γ_{NIR}=1.7\pm0.1$ and $Γ_X=2.27\pm0.12$. The difference in spectral slopes ($ΔΓ=0.57\pm0.09$) strongly supports synchrotron emission with a cooling break. The flare starts first in the NIR with a flat and bright NIR spectrum, while X-ray radiation is detected only after about $10^3$ s, when a very steep X-ray spectrum ($ΔΓ=1.8\pm0.4$) is observed. These measurements are consistent with synchrotron emission with a cooling break and they suggest that the high energy cut-off in the electron distribution ($γ_{max}$) induces an initial cut-off in the optical-UV band that evolves slowly into the X-ray band. The temporal and spectral evolution observed in all bright X-ray flares are also in line with a slow evolution of $γ_{max}$. We also observe hints for a variation of the cooling break that might be induced by an evolution of the magnetic field (from $B\sim30\pm8$ G to $B\sim4.8\pm1.7$ G at the X-ray peak). Such drop of the magnetic field at the flare peak would be expected if the acceleration mechanism is tapping energy from the magnetic field, such as in magnetic reconnection. We conclude that synchrotron emission with a cooling break is a viable process for Sgr A*'s flaring emission.

A simple stochastic quadrant model for the transport and deposition of particles in turbulent boundary layers

We present a simple stochastic quadrant model for calculating the transport and de- position of heavy particles in a fully developed turbulent boundary layer based on the statistics of wall-normal fluid velocity fluctuations obtained from a fully developed channel flow. Individual particles are tracked through the boundary layer via their interactions with a succession of random eddies found in each of the quadrants of the fluid Reynolds shear stress domain in a homogeneous Markov chain process. In this way we are able to account directly for the influence of ejection and sweeping events as others have done but without resorting to the use of adjustable parameters. Deposition rate predictions for a wide range of heavy particles predicted by the model compare well with benchmark experimental measurements. In addition deposition rates are compared with those obtained from continuous random walk (CRW) models and Langevin equation based ejection and sweep models which noticeably give sig- nificantly lower deposition rates. Various statistics related to the particle near wall behavior are also presented. Finally we consider the model limitations in using the model to calculate deposition in more complex flows where the near wall turbulence may be significantly different.

A large eddy simulation (LES) study of inertial deposition of particles onto in-line tube-banks

We study deposition and impact of heavy particles onto an in-line tube-banks within a turbulent cross flow through Lagrangian particle tracking coupled with an LES modelling framework. The flow Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter D and flow velocity between the gap of two vertically adjacent cylinders is 33960. We examine the flow structures across the tube bank and report surface pressure characteristics on cylinders. Taking into account particle-wall impact and bounce, we study dispersion and deposition of three sets of particles (St = 0.35, 0.086, 0.0075) based on 107 particles tracked through the turbulent flow resolved by LES. The deposition efficiency for the three sets of particles are reported across the tube-banks. Positions of particle deposited onto tube-banks shows that significantly more of smaller particles deposit onto the back-side of the back-banks. This suggests that the smaller particles are easier to be entrained into the wake and impact onto the back-side of cylinders.

Searching for supergiant fast X-ray transients with Swift

Supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) are high mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) hosting a neutron star and an OB supergiant companion. We examine the available Swift data, as well as other new or archival/serendipitous data, on three sources: IGR J17407-2808, 2XMM J185114.3-000004, and IGR J18175-2419, whose X-ray characteristics qualify them as candidate SFXT, in order to explore their properties and test whether they are consistent with an SFXT nature. As IGR J17407-2808 and 2XMM J185114.3-000004 triggered the Burst Alert Telescope on board Swift, the Swift data allow us to provide their first arcsecond localisations, leading to an unequivocal identification of the source CXOU J174042.0-280724 as the soft X-ray counterpart of IGR J17407-2808, as well as their first broadband spectra, which can be fit with models generally describing accreting neutron stars in HMXBs. While still lacking optical spectroscopy to assess the spectral type of the companion, we propose 2XMM J185114.3-000004 as a very strong SFXT candidate. The nature of IGR J17407-2808 remains, instead, more uncertain. Its broad band properties cannot exclude that the emission originates from either a HMXB (and in that case, a SFXT) or, more likely, a low mass X-ray binary. Finally, based on the deep non-detection in our XRT monitoring campaign and a careful reanalysis of the original Integral data in which the discovery of the source was first reported, we show that IGR J18175-2419 is likely a spurious detection.

Swift J174540.7-290015: a new accreting binary in the Galactic Center

We report on the identification of the new Galactic Center (GC) transient Swift J174540.7-290015 as a likely low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) located at only 16 arcsec from Sgr A*. This transient was detected on 2016 February 6th during the Swift GC monitoring, and it showed long-term spectral variations compatible with a hard to soft state transition. We observed the field with XMM-Newton on February 26th for 35 ks, detecting the source in the soft state, characterised by a low level of variability and a soft X-ray thermal spectrum with a high energy tail (detected by INTEGRAL up to ~50 keV), typical of either accreting neutron stars or black holes. We observed: i) a high column density of neutral absorbing material, suggesting that Swift J174540.7-290015 is located near or beyond the GC and; ii) a sub-Solar Iron abundance, therefore we argue that Iron is depleted into dust grains. The lack of detection of FeK absorption lines, eclipses or dipping suggests that the accretion disc is observed at a low inclination angle. Radio (VLA) observations did not detect any radio counterpart to Swift J174540.7-290015. No evidence for X-ray or radio periodicity is found. The location of the transient was observed also in the near-IR with GROND at MPG/ESO La Silla 2.2m telescope and VLT/NaCo pre- and post-outburst. Within the Chandra error region we find multiple objects that display no significant variations.

An LES study of turbulent flow over in-line tube-banks and comparison with experimental measurements

Turbulent flow across an in-line array of tube-banks with transverse and longitudinal pitch PT /D = 2.67, and PL /D = 2.31, has been simulated successfully by Large Eddy Simulation (LES) based on the dynamic Smagorinsky subgrid scale model (SGS), in which a wall-layer model is used to reduce the computational cost. The flow structures across the tube-banks were examined through the normalized Q criterion. The surface pressure characteristics from the middle cylinder within each column of cylinders are found to agree well with the existing experimental data, as did also the values of drag and lift coefficients. These results indicate that cylinders from the second column experience the minimum drag force and maximum lift force fluctuation. Spectral analyses were performed for velocity signals sampled behind each middle cylinder axis, which show that the dominant vortex shedding frequency does not vary across the tube-banks. On this basis, we also examined the shear layer instability. Finally, we report auto-correlation functions for streamwise and cross velocity fluctuations as a function of the spanwise length.

Spatial Dependent Diffusion of Cosmic Rays and the Excess of Primary Electrons Derived from High Precision Measurements by AMS-02

The precise spectra of Cosmic Ray (CR) electrons and positrons have been published by the measurement of AMS-02. It is reasonable to regard the difference between the electrons and positrons spectra ( $\triangle Φ= Φ_{e^-}-Φ_{e^+}$ ) as being dominated by primary electrons. Noticing that the resulting electron spectrum shows no sign of spectral softening above 20 GeV, which is in contrast with the prediction of standard model. In this work, we generalize the analytic one dimensional two-halo model of diffusion to a three dimensional realistic calculation by implementing a spatial variant diffusion coefficients in DRAGON package. As a result, we can reproduce the spectral hardening of protons observed by several experiments, and predict an excess of high energy primary electrons which agrees with the measurement reasonably well. Unlike the break spectrum obtained for protons, the model calculation predicts a smooth electron excess and thus slightly over predicts the flux from tens of GeV to 100GeV. To understand this issue, further experimental and theoretical studies are necessary.

The WiFeS S7 AGN survey: Current status and recent results on NGC 6300

The Siding Spring Southern Seyfert Spectroscopic Snapshot Survey (S7) is a targeted survey probing the narrow-line regions (NLRs) of a representative sample of ~140 nearby (z<0.02) Seyfert galaxies by means of optical integral field spectroscopy. The survey is based on a homogeneous data set observed using the Wide Field Spectrograph WiFeS. The data provide a 25x38 arcsec$^2$ field-of-view around the galaxy centre at typically ~1.5 arcsec spatial resolution and cover a wavelength range between ~3400 - 7100 $Å$ at spectral resolutions of ~100 km s$^{-1}$ and ~50 km s$^{-1}$ in the blue and red parts, respectively. The survey is primarily designed to study gas excitation and star formation around AGN, with a special focus on the shape of the AGN ionising continuum, the interaction between radio jets and the NLR gas, and the nature of nuclear LINER emission. We provide an overview of the current status of S7-based results and present new results for NGC 6300.

The story of Seyfert galaxy RE J2248-511: from intriguingly ultrasoft to unremarkably average

RE J2248-511 is one of only 14 non-blazar AGN detected in the far ultraviolet by the ROSAT Wide Field Camera implying a large ultrasoft X-ray flux. This soft X-ray excess is strongly variable on year timescales, a common property of Narrow Line Seyfert 1s, yet its optical linewidths classify this source as a broad-lined Seyfert 1. We use four nearly simultaneous optical--X-ray SEDs spanning 7 years to study the spectral shape and long term variability of RE J2248-511. Here we show that the continuum SED for the brightest epoch dataset is consistent with the mean SED of a standard quasar, and matches well to that from an XMM-SDSS sample of AGN with ~ 10^8 and ~ 0.2. All the correlated optical and soft X-ray variability can be due entirely to a major absorption event. The only remarkable aspect of this AGN is that there is no measurable intrinsic X-ray absorption column in the brightest epoch dataset. The observed FUV flux is determined by the combination of this and the fact that the source lies within a local absorption `hole'. RE J2248-511, whose variable, ultrasoft X-ray flux once challenged its BLS1 classification, demonstrates that characterisation of such objects requires multi-epoch, multi-wavelength campaigns.

Synthesis and properties of charge-ordered thallium halide perovskites, CsTl1+0.5Tl3+0.5X3 (X = F, Cl)- theoretical precursors for superconductivity?

Recently CsTlCl3 and CsTlF3 perovskites were theoretically predicted to be potential superconductors if they are optimally doped. The synthesis of these two compounds, together with a complete characterization of the samples are reported. CsTlCl3 is obtained as orange crystals in two different polymorphs: a tetragonal (I4/m) and a cubic (Fm-3m) phase. CsTlF3 is formed as a light brown powder, also as a double cubic perovskite (Fm-3m). In all three CsTlX3 phases Tl1+ and Tl3+ were located in two different crystallographic positions that accommodate their different bond lengths. In CsTlCl3 some Tl vacancies are found in the Tl1+ position. The charge ordering between Tl1+ and Tl3+ was confirmed by x-ray absorption and Raman spectroscopy. The Raman spectroscopy of CsTlCl3 under high pressure (58 GPa) did not indicate any phase transition to a possible single Tl2+ state. However, the highly insulating material becomes less resistive with increasing high pressure, while undergoing a change in the optical properties, from transparent to deeply opaque red, indicative of a decrease of the band gap. The theoretical design and experimental validation of the existence of CsTlF3 and CsTlCl3 cubic perovskites is the necessary first step in confirming the theoretical prediction of superconductivity in these materials.

A new way to measure supermassive black hole spin in accretion disc dominated Active Galaxies

We show that disc continuum fitting can be used to constrain black hole spin in a subclass of Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) AGN as their low mass and high mass accretion rate means that the disc peaks at energies just below the soft X-ray bandpass. We apply the technique to the NLS1 PG1244+026, where the optical/UV/X-ray spectrum is consistent with being dominated by a standard disc component. This gives a best estimate for black hole spin which is low, with a firm upper limit of $a_*<0.86$. This contrasts with the recent X-ray determinations of (close to) maximal black hole spin in other NLS1 based on relativistic smearing of the iron profile. While our data on PG1244+026 does not have sufficient statistics at high energy to give a good measure of black hole spin from the iron line profile, cosmological simulations predict that black holes with similar masses have similar growth histories and so should have similar spins. This suggests that there is a problem either in our understanding of disc spectra, or/and X-ray reflection or/and the evolution of black hole spin.

The X-ray luminous galaxies optically classified as star forming are mostly narrow line Seyfert 1s

We aim to characterize the nature of galaxies whose optical emission line diagnostics are consistent with star formation, but whose X-ray properties strongly point towards the presence of an AGN. Understanding these sources is of particular importance in assessing the completeness of AGN samples derived from large galaxy surveys, selected solely on the basis of their optical spectral properties. We construct a large sample of 211 NELGs, which have FWHMs Hb emission line <1200 km/s from the SDSS-DR7 galaxy spectroscopic catalogue, for which we are able to construct a classical diagnostic diagram, [OIII]/Hb versus [NII]/Ha (hence z<0.4), and that are also detected in the hard energy band and present in the 2XMM catalogue. This sample offers a large database by which to investigate potential mismatches between optical diagnostics and X-ray emission. Among these 211 objects, which based on our selection criteria are all at z<0.4, we find that 145 galaxies are diagnosed as AGNs, having 2-10 keV X-ray luminosities that span a wide range, from 10^40 erg/s to above 10^44 erg/s. Out of the remaining 66 galaxies, which are instead diagnosed as SF, we find a bimodal distribution in which 28 have X-ray luminosities in excess of 10^42 erg/s, large T (>1), and large X/O ratio (>0.1), while the rest are consistent with being simply SF galaxies. Those 28 galaxies exhibit the broadest Hb line FWHMs, from ~300 to 1200 km/s, and their X-ray spectrum is steeper than average and often displays a soft excess. We therefore conclude that the population of X-ray luminous NELGs with optical lines consistent with those of a starforming galaxy (which represent 19% of our whole sample) is largely dominated by NLS1s. The occurrence of such sources in the overall optically selected sample is small (<2%), hence the contamination of optically selected galaxies by NLS1s is very small.

A Combined Optical and X-ray Study of Unobscured Type 1 AGN. II. Relation Between X-ray Emission and Optical Spectra

In this paper we study the properties of the optical spectra of Type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) by using the unobscured hard X-ray emission as a diagnostic. We develop the `Correlation Spectrum Technique' (CST) and use this to show the strength of correlation between the hard X-ray luminosity and each wavelength of the optical spectrum. This shows that for Broad Line Seyfert 1s all the strong emission lines (broad component of Hαand Hβ, [NeIII] λλ3869/3967, [OI] λλ6300/6364, [OII] λλ3726/3729, [OIII] λλ4959/5007) and the optical underlying continuum all strongly correlate with the hard X-ray emission. But the NLS1s appear to be somewhat different. Among the various Balmer line components and the broadband SED components, the best correlation exists between the hard X-ray component and broad component (BC) of the Balmer lines, which supports the view that broad line region (BLR) has the closest link with the AGN's compact X-ray emission. The equivalent widths of Balmer line IC and BC are found to correlate with L$_{2-10keV}$, $κ_{2-10keV}^{-1} = L_{bol}/L_{2-10keV}$, Balmer line FWHM and black hole mass. There is a non-linear dependence of the Balmer line IC and BC luminosities with L$_{2-10keV}$ and L$_{5100}$, which suggests that a second-order factor such as the ILR and BLR covering factors affect the Balmer line component luminosities. The Balmer decrement is found to decrease from ~5 in the line core to ~2 in the extended wings, with mean decrements of 2.1 in BLR and 4.8 in ILR. This suggests different physical conditions in these regions. The [OIII] line is composed of a narrow core together with a blue-shifted component with average outflow velocity of $130^{+230}_{-80} km s^{-1}$. The total luminosity of [OIII] λ5007 well correlates with the hard X-ray luminosity.
