Self-pulsing effect in chaotic scattering

We study the quantum and classical scattering of Hamiltonian systems whose chaotic saddle is described by binary or ternary horseshoes. We are interested in parameters of the system for which a stable island, associated with the inner fundamental periodic orbit of the system exists and is large, but chaos around this island is well developed. In this situation, in classical systems, decay from the interaction region is algebraic, while in quantum systems it is exponential due to tunneling. In both cases, the most surprising effect is a periodic response to an incoming wave packet. The period of this self-pulsing effect or scattering echoes coincides with the mean period, by which the scattering trajectories rotate around the stable orbit. This period of rotation is directly related to the development stage of the underlying horseshoe. Therefore the predicted echoes will provide experimental access to topological information. We numerically test these results in kicked one dimensional models and in open billiards.

Construction of a natural partition of incomplete horseshoes

A method is presented to construct a partition of an incomplete horseshoe in a Poincare map which is only based on unstable manifolds of outermost fixed points and eventually their limits. Thereby this partition becomes natural from the point of view of asymptotic scattering observations. The symbolic dynamics derived from this partition coincides with the one derived from the hierarchical structure of the singularities of scattering functions.

Classical Scattering for a driven inverted Gaussian potential in terms of the chaotic invariant set

We study the classical electron scattering from a driven inverted Gaussian potential, an open system, in terms of its chaotic invariant set. This chaotic invariant set is described by a ternary horseshoe construction on an appropriate Poincare surface of section. We find the development parameters that describe the hyperbolic component of the chaotic invariant set. In addition, we show that the hierarchical structure of the fractal set of singularities of the scattering functions is the same as the structure of the chaotic invariant set. Finally, we construct a symbolic encoding of the hierarchical structure of the set of singularities of the scattering functions and use concepts from the thermodynamical formalism to obtain one of the measures of chaos of the fractal set of singularities, the topological entropy.

Hardware and software status of QCDOC

QCDOC is a massively parallel supercomputer whose processing nodes are based on an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). This ASIC was custom-designed so that crucial lattice QCD kernels achieve an overall sustained performance of 50% on machines with several 10,000 nodes. This strong scalability, together with low power consumption and a price/performance ratio of $1 per sustained MFlops, enable QCDOC to attack the most demanding lattice QCD problems. The first ASICs became available in June of 2003, and the testing performed so far has shown all systems functioning according to specification. We review the hardware and software status of QCDOC and present performance figures obtained in real hardware as well as in simulation.

The QCDOC supercomputer: hardware, software, and performance

An overview is given of the QCDOC architecture, a massively parallel and highly scalable computer optimized for lattice QCD using system-on-a-chip technology. The heart of a single node is the PowerPC-based QCDOC ASIC, developed in collaboration with IBM Research, with a peak speed of 1 GFlop/s. The nodes communicate via high-speed serial links in a 6-dimensional mesh with nearest-neighbor connections. We find that highly optimized four-dimensional QCD code obtains over 50% efficiency in cycle accurate simulations of QCDOC, even for problems of fixed computational difficulty run on tens of thousands of nodes. We also provide an overview of the QCDOC operating system, which manages and runs QCDOC applications on partitions of variable dimensionality. Finally, the SciDAC activity for QCDOC and the message-passing interface QMP specified as a part of the SciDAC effort are discussed for QCDOC. We explain how to make optimal use of QMP routines on QCDOC in conjunction with existing C and C++ lattice QCD codes, including the publicly available MILC codes.

Physics Analysis Expert PAX: First Applications

PAX (Physics Analysis Expert) is a novel, C++ based toolkit designed to assist teams in particle physics data analysis issues. The core of PAX are event interpretation containers, holding relevant information about and possible interpretations of a physics event. Providing this new level of abstraction beyond the results of the detector reconstruction programs, PAX facilitates the buildup and use of modern analysis factories. Class structure and user command syntax of PAX are set up to support expert teams as well as newcomers in preparing for the challenges expected to arise in the data analysis at future hadron colliders.

Chaotic Classical Scattering and Dynamics in Oscillating 1-D Potential Wells

We study the motion of a classical particle interacting with one, two, and finally an infinite chain of 1D square wells with oscillating depth. For a single well we find complicated scattering behavior even though there is no topological chaos due to the absence of hyperbolic periodic orbits. In contrast, for two coupled square wells there is chaotic scattering. The infinite oscillating chain yields the generic transition to chaos, with diffusion in energy and in space, as the separation between wells is increased. We briefly discuss the relevance of our results to solid state physics.

Quantum and classical echoes in scattering systems described by simple Smale horseshoes

We explore the quantum scattering of systems classically described by binary and other low order Smale horseshoes, in a stage of development where the stable island associated with the inner periodic orbit is large, but chaos around this island is well developed. For short incoming pulses we find periodic echoes modulating an exponential decay over many periods. The period is directly related to the development stage of the horseshoe. We exemplify our studies with a one-dimensional system periodically kicked in time and we mention possible experiments.

On the Special Role of Symmetric Periodic Orbits in a Chaotic System

After early work of Henon it has become folk knowledge that symmetric periodic orbits are of particular importance. We reinforce this belief by additional studies and we further find that invariant closed symplectic submanifolds caused by discrete symmetries prove to be an important complement to the long known role of the orbits. The latter have particular importance in semi-classics. Based on the structural stability of hyperbolic horseshoes we give an argument that opens an avenue to the understanding of these facts.

Phase transitions in open quantum systems

We consider the behaviour of open quantum systems in dependence on the coupling to one decay channel by introducing the coupling parameter $α$ being proportional to the average degree of overlapping. Under critical conditions, a reorganization of the spectrum takes place which creates a bifurcation of the time scales with respect to the lifetimes of the resonance states. We derive analytically the conditions under which the reorganization process can be understood as a second-order phase transition and illustrate our results by numerical investigations. The conditions are fulfilled e.g. for a picket fence with equal coupling of the states to the continuum. Energy dependencies within the system are included. We consider also the generic case of an unfolded Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble. In all these cases, the reorganization of the spectrum occurs at the critical value $α_{crit}$ of the control parameter globally over the whole energy range of the spectrum. All states act cooperatively.

Status of the 0.8 Teraflops Supercomputer at Columbia

The first stage in the construction of the 0.8 Teraflops Supercomputer at Columbia, a working, two node parallel computer, has been successfully completed. The next stage, a 512 node, 26 Gigaflops prototype, is in its final construction phase. A general description and current status of the hardware and software is presented.

Angular Dependent Soft X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy of V2O5 and V6O13

We have measured the V 2p3/2 and O 1s x-ray absorption spectra of single crystal V2O5 and V6O13 and compared to linear combinations of atomic orbitals (LCAO) density of states (DOS) calculations. The spectra change dramatically with incident angle. The use of polarized light and a single crystal limits the number of transitions possible, revealing spectral features that cannot be resolved on polycrystals (angle-integrated). The measured O 1s and V 2p3/2 spectra agree with the projected unoccupied O 2p and V 3d DOS respectively, indicating that atomic and solid state effects, including V-O hybridization, must be included to adequately describe the spectra.
