Entangled quantum tunneling of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We examine the quantum tunneling process in Bose condensates of two interacting species trapped in a double well configuration. We discover the condition under which particles of different species can tunnel as pairs through the potential barrier between two wells in opposition directions. This novel form of tunneling is due to the interspecies interaction that eliminates the self- trapping effect. The correlated motion of tunneling atoms leads to the generation of quantum entanglement between two macroscopically coherent systems.

Dynamic depletion in a Bose condensate via a sudden increase of the scattering length

We examine the time-dependent quantum depletion of a trapped Bose condensate arising from a rapid increase of the scattering length. Our solution indicates that a significant buildup of incoherent atoms can occur within a characteristic time short compared with the harmonic trap period. We discuss how the depletion density and the characteristic time depend on the physical parameters of the condensate.

Propagators of the Jaynes-Cummings model in open systems

We present a propagator formalism to investigate the scattering of photons by a cavity QED system that consists of a single two-level atom dressed by a leaky optical cavity field. We establish a diagrammatic method to construct the propagator analytically. This allows us to determine the quantum state of the scattered photons for an arbitrary incident photon packet. As an application, we explicitly solve the problem of a single-photon packet scattered by an initially excited atom.

Quantum fluctuations in coupled dark solitons in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We show that the quantum fluctuations associated with the Bogoliubov quasiparticle vacuum can be strongly concentrated inside dark solitons in a trapped Bose Einstein condensate. We identify a finite number of anomalous modes that are responsible for such quantum phenomena. The fluctuations in these anomalous modes correspond to the `zero-point' oscillations in coupled dark solitons.

Coherent control of spin squeezing

We report an interaction that controls spin squeezing in a collection of spin 1/2 particles. We describe how spin squeezing can be generated and maintained in time. Our scheme can be applied to control the spin squeezing in a Bose condensate with two internal spin states.

Motional dressed states in a Bose condensate: Superfluidity at supersonic speed

We present an exact analytic solution of a nonlinear Schrödinger field interacting with a moving potential (obstacle) at supersonic speed. We show that the field forms a stable shape-invariant structure localized around the obstacle --- a dressing effect that protects the field against excitations by the obstacle.

Coherent disintegration and stability of vortices in trapped Bose condensate

We consider the intrinsic stability of the vortex states of a pure Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a harmonic potential under the effects of coherent atom-atom interaction. We find that stable vortices can be supported, and that vortex stability can be controlled by changing the inter-particle interaction strength. At unstable regimes, a vortex will spontaneously disintegrate into states with different angular momenta even without external perturbations, with the lifetime determined by its imaginary excitation frequencies.

Quantum spins mixing in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We examine the internal structure of the ground states of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in which atoms have three internal hyperfine spins. We determine a set of collective spin states which minimize the interaction energy between condensate atoms. We also examine the internal dynamics of an initially spin polarized condensate. The time scale of spin-mixing is predicted.

Application of Uniform Asymptotics to the Second Painlev{é} Transcendent

In this work we propose a new method for investigating connection problems for the class of nonlinear second-order differential equations known as the Painlev{é} equations. Such problems can be characterized by the question as to how the asymptotic behaviours of solutions are related as the independent variable is allowed to pass towards infinity along different directions in the complex plane. Connection problems have been previously tackled by a variety of methods. Frequently these are based on the ideas of isomonodromic deformation and the matching of WKB solutions. However, the implementation of these methods often tends to be heuristic in nature and so the task of rigorising the process is complicated. The method we propose here develops uniform approximations to solutions. This removes the need to match solutions, is rigorous, and can lead to the solution of connection problems with minimal computational effort. Our method is reliant on finding uniform approximations of differential equations of the generic form ${d^2ϕ}/{dη^2} = - ξ^2F(η,ξ)ϕ$ as the complex-valued parameter $ξ\to \infty.$ The details of the treatment rely heavily on the locations of the zeros of the function $F$ in this limit. If they are isolated then a uniform approximation to solutions can be derived in terms of Airy functions of suitable argument. On the other hand, if two of the zeros of $F$ coalesce as $|ξ| \to \infty$ then an approximation can be derived in terms of parabolic cylinder functions. In this paper we discuss both cases, but illustrate our technique in action by applying the parabolic cylinder case to the ``classical'' connection problem associated with the second Painlev{é} transcendent. Future papers will show how the technique can be applied with very little change to the other Painlev{é} equations, and to the wider problem of the asymptotic behaviour of the general solution to any of these equations.
