High resolution angle resolved photoemission studies on quasi-particle dynamics in graphite

We obtained the spectral function of the graphite H point using high resolution angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The extracted width of the spectral function (inverse of the photo-hole lifetime) near the H point is approximately proportional to the energy as expected from the linearly increasing density of states (DOS) near the Fermi energy. This is well accounted by our electron-phonon coupling theory considering the peculiar electronic DOS near the Fermi level. And we also investigated the temperature dependence of the peak widths both experimentally and theoretically. The upper bound for the electron-phonon coupling parameter is ~0.23, nearly the same value as previously reported at the K point. Our analysis of temperature dependent ARPES data at K shows that the energy of phonon mode of graphite has much higher energy scale than 125K which is dominant in electron-phonon coupling.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of electron-doped cuprate superconductors: Isotropic electron-phonon coupling

We have performed high resolution angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) studies on electron doped cuprate superconductors Sm2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.10, 0.15, 0.18), Nd2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.15) and Eu2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.15). Imaginary parts of the electron removal self energy show step-like features due to an electron-bosonic mode coupling. The step-like feature is seen along both nodal and anti-nodal directions but at energies of 50 and 70 meV, respectively, independent of the doping and rare earth element. Such energy scales can be understood as being due to preferential coupling to half- and full-breathing mode phonons, revealing the phononic origin of the kink structures. Estimated electron-phonon coupling constant lambda from the self energy is roughly independent of the doping and momentum. The isotropic nature of lambda is discussed in comparison with the hole doped case where a strong anisotropy exists.

Novel Jeff = 1/2 Mott State Induced by Relativistic Spin-Orbit Coupling in Sr2IrO4

We investigated electronic structure of 5d transition-metal oxide Sr2IrO4 using angle-resolved photoemission, optical conductivity, and x-ray absorption measurements and first-principles band calculations. The system was found to be well described by novel effective total angular momentum Jeff states, in which relativistic spin-orbit (SO) coupling is fully taken into account under a large crystal field. Despite of delocalized Ir 5d states, the Jeff-states form so narrow bands that even a small correlation energy leads to the Jeff = 1/2 Mott ground state with unique electronic and magnetic behaviors, suggesting a new class of the Jeff quantum spin driven correlated-electron phenomena.

Constraining population synthesis models via empirical binary compact object merger and supernovae rates

The observed samples of supernovae (SN) and double compact objects (DCOs) provide several critical constraints on population-synthesis models: the parameters of these models must be carefully chosen to reproduce, among other factors, (i) the formation rates of double neutron star (NS-NS) binaries and of white dwarf-neutron star (WD-NS) binaries, estimated from binary samples, and (ii) the type II and Ib/c supernova rates. Even allowing for extremely conservative accounting of the uncertainties in observational and theoretical predictions, we find only a few plausible population synthesis models (roughly 9%) are consistent with DCO and SN rates empirically determined from observations. As a proof of concept, we describe the information that can be extracted about population synthesis models given such stringent observational tests, including surprisingly good agreement with the neutron star kick distributions inferred from pulsar proper-motion measurements. In the present study, we find that the current observational constraints favor: kicks described by a single Maxwellian with a typical velocity of about 300km/s; mass-loss fractions during non-conservative, but stable, mass transfer episodes of about 90%; and common envelope parameters of about 0.2-0.5. Finally, we use the subset of astrophysically consistent models to predict the rates at which black hole-neutron star (BH-NS) and NS-NS binaries merge in the Milky Way and the nearby Universe, assuming Milky-Way-like galaxies dominate. Effect of linear density of states on the quasi-particle dynamics and small electron-phonon coupling in graphite

We obtained the spectral function of very high quality natural graphite single crystals using angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). A clear separation of non-bonding and bonding bands and asymmetric lineshape are observed. The asymmetric lineshapes are well accounted for by the finite photoelectron escape depth and the band structure. The extracted width of the spectral function (inverse of the photohole life time) near the K point is, beyond the maximum phonon energy, approximately proportional to the energy as expected from the linear density of states near the Fermi energy. The upper bound for the electron-phonon coupling constant is about 0.2, a much smaller value than the previously reported one.

Electron Removal Self Energy and its application to Ca2CuO2Cl2

We propose using the self energy defined for the electron removal Green's function. Starting from the electron removal Green's function, we obtained expressions for the removal self energy Sigma^ER (k,omega) that are applicable for non-quasiparticle photoemission spectral functions from a single band system. Our method does not assume momentum independence and produces the self energy in the full k-omega space. The method is applied to the angle resolved photoemission from Ca_2CuO_2Cl_2 and the result is found to be compatible with the self energy value from the peak width of sharp features. The self energy is found to be only weakly k-dependent. In addition, the Im Sigma shows a maximum at around 1 eV where the high energy kink is located.

Electronic Structure of Electron-doped Sm1.86Ce0.14CuO4: Strong `Pseudo-Gap' Effects, Nodeless Gap and Signatures of Short Range Order

Angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) data from the electron doped cuprate superconductor Sm$_{1.86}$Ce$_{0.14}$CuO$_4$ shows a much stronger pseudo-gap or "hot-spot" effect than that observed in other optimally doped $n$-type cuprates. Importantly, these effects are strong enough to drive the zone-diagonal states below the chemical potential, implying that d-wave superconductivity in this compound would be of a novel "nodeless" gap variety. The gross features of the Fermi surface topology and low energy electronic structure are found to be well described by reconstruction of bands by a $\sqrt{2}\times\sqrt{2}$ order. Comparison of the ARPES and optical data from the $same$ sample shows that the pseudo-gap energy observed in optical data is consistent with the inter-band transition energy of the model, allowing us to have a unified picture of pseudo-gap effects. However, the high energy electronic structure is found to be inconsistent with such a scenario. We show that a number of these model inconsistencies can be resolved by considering a short range ordering or inhomogeneous state.

Formation of Double Compact Objects

Current observations of double neutron stars provide us with a wealth of information that we can use to investigate their evolutionary history and the physical conditions of neutron star formation. Understanding this history and formation conditions further allow us to make theoretical predictions for the formation of other double compact objects with one or two black hole components and assess the detectability of such systems by ground-based gravitational-wave interferometers. In this paper we summarize our group's body of work in the past few years and we place our conclusions and current understanding in the framework of other work in this area of astrophysical research.

Anomalous high energy dispersion in photoemission spectra from insulating cuprates

Angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopic measurements have been performed on an insulating cuprate Ca_2CuO_2Cl_2. High resolution data taken along the Γto (pi,pi) cut show an additional dispersive feature that merges with the known dispersion of the lowest binding energy feature, which follows the usual strongly renormalized dispersion of ~0.35 eV. This higher energy part reveals a dispersion that is very close to the unrenormalized band predicted by band theory. A transfer of spectral weight from the low energy feature to the high energy feature is observed as the Γpoint is approached. By comparing with theoretical calculations the high energy feature observed here demonstrates that the incoherent portion of the spectral function has significant structure in momentum space due to the presence of various energy scales.

Constraining population synthesis models via the binary neutron star population

The observed sample of double neutron-star (NS-NS) binaries presents a challenge to population-synthesis models of compact object formation: the parameters entering into these models must be carefully chosen so as to match (i) the observed star formation rate and (ii) the formation rate of NS-NS binaries, which can be estimated from the observed sample and the selection effects related to the discoveries with radio-pulsar surveys. In this paper, we select from an extremely broad family of possible population synthesis models those few (2%) which are consistent with the observed sample of NS-NS binaries. To further sharpen the constraints the observed NS-NS population places upon our understanding of compact-object formation processes, we separate the observed NS-NS population into two channels: (i) merging NS-NS binaries, which will inspiral and merge through the action of gravitational waves within $10 $ Gyr, and (ii) wide NS-NS binaries, consisting of all the rest. With the subset of astrophysically consistent models, we explore the implications for the rates at which double black hole (BH-BH), black hole-neutron star (BH-NS), and NS-NS binaries will merge through the emission of gravitational waves.

Charge dynamics in strongly correlated one-dimensional Cu-O chain systems revealed by inelastic X-ray scattering

We report on the Cu 1s resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) of Cu-O one-dimensional (1D) strongly correlated insulator systems with contrasting atomic arrangements, namely edge-sharing CuGeO3 and corner-sharing Sr2CuO3. Owing to good statistics of the high-resolution RIXS data, so far unresolved fine structures are revealed. Detailed photon-energy and momentum dependence of the RIXS spectra in comparison with theoretical calculations has clarified the natures of the low-energy charge excitations and hybridization of the electronic states.

About the chemical composition of delta Scuti - the prototype of the class of pulsating variables

We present chemical abundances in the photosphere of $δ$ Scuti -- the prototype of the class of pulsating variables -- determined from the analysis of a spectrum obtained at Terskol observatory 2 meter telescope with resolution $R=52,000$, signal to noise ratio 250. VLT and IUE spectra were used also . Abundance pattern of \dsct consists of 49 chemical elements. The abundances of Be, P, Ge, Nb, Mo, Ru, Er, Tb, Dy, Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, Os, Pt, Th were not investigated previously. The lines of third spectra of Pr and Nd also are investigated for the first time. The abundances of heavy elements show the overabundances with respect to the Sun up to 1 dex. The abundance pattern of \dsct is similar to that of Am-Fm stars.

The Cosmic Coalescence Rates for Double Neutron Star Binaries

This manuscript is an updated version of Kalogera et al. (2004) published in ApJ Letters to correct our calculation of the Galactic DNS in-spiral rate. The details of the original erratum submitted to ApJ Letters are given in page 6 of this manuscript. We report on the newly increased event rates due to the recent discovery of the highly relativistic binary pulsar J0737--3039 (Burgay et al. 2003). Using a rigorous statistical method, we present the calculations reported by Burgay et al., which produce a in-spiral rate for Galactic double neutron star (DNS) systems that is higher by a factor of 5-7 compared to estimates made prior to the new discovery. Our method takes into account known pulsar-survey selection effects and biases due to small-number statistics. This rate increase has dramatic implications for gravitational wave detectors. For the initial Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors, the most probable detection rates for DNS in-spirals are one event per 10-630 yr; at 95% confidence, we obtain rates up to one per 3 yr. For the advanced LIGO detectors, the most probable rates are 10-500 events per year. These predictions, for the first time, bring the expectations for DNS detections by the initial LIGO detectors to the astrophysically relevant regime. We also use our models to predict that the large-scale Parkes Multibeam pulsar survey with acceleration searches could detect an average of four binary pulsars similar to those known at present.

The Highly Relativistic Binary Pulsar PSR J0737-3039A: Discovery and Implications

PSR J0737-3039A is a millisecond pulsar with a spin period of 22.7 ms included in a double-neutron star system with an orbital period of 2.4 hrs. Its companion has also been detected as a radio pulsar, making this binary the first known double-pulsar system. Its discovery has important implications for relativistic gravity tests, gravitational wave detection and plasma physics. Here we will shortly describe the discovery of the first pulsar in this unique system and present the first results obtained by follow-up studies.

An increased estimate of the merger rate of double neutron stars from observations of a highly relativistic system

The merger of close binary systems containing two neutron stars should produce a burst of gravitational waves, as predicted by the theory of general relativity. A reliable estimate of the double-neutron-star merger rate in the Galaxy is crucial in order to predict whether current gravity wave detectors will be successful in detecting such bursts. Present estimates of this rate are rather low, because we know of only a few double-neutron-star binaries with merger times less than the age of the Universe. Here we report the discovery of a 22-ms pulsar, PSR J0737-3039, which is a member of a highly relativistic double-neutron-star binary with an orbital period of 2.4 hours. This system will merge in about 85 Myr, a time much shorter than for any other known neutron-star binary. Together with the relatively low radio luminosity of PSR J0737-3039, this timescale implies an order-of-magnitude increase in the predicted merger rate for double-neutron-star systems in our Galaxy (and in the rest of the Universe).

Hardware and software status of QCDOC

QCDOC is a massively parallel supercomputer whose processing nodes are based on an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). This ASIC was custom-designed so that crucial lattice QCD kernels achieve an overall sustained performance of 50% on machines with several 10,000 nodes. This strong scalability, together with low power consumption and a price/performance ratio of $1 per sustained MFlops, enable QCDOC to attack the most demanding lattice QCD problems. The first ASICs became available in June of 2003, and the testing performed so far has shown all systems functioning according to specification. We review the hardware and software status of QCDOC and present performance figures obtained in real hardware as well as in simulation.

An angle-resolved photoemission spectral function analysis of the electron doped cuprate Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4

Using methods made possible by recent advances in photoemission technology, we perform an indepth line-shape analysis of the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the electron doped (n-type) cuprate superconductor Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4. Unlike for the p-type materials, we only observe weak mass renormalizations near 50-70 meV. This may be indicative of smaller electron-phonon coupling or due to the masking effects of other interactions that make the electron-phonon coupling harder to detect. This latter scenario may suggest limitations of the spectral function analysis in extracting electronic self-energies when some of the interactions are highly momentum dependent.

Stellar abundance patterns. What is the possible level of completeness today ?

We discuss the way of increasing of the number of chemical elements, investigated in stellar spectra. We can reach it by using spectrum synthesis method, new atomic data and observation of stellar spectra with resolution comparable to solar spectral atlases. We show two examples of this kind researches. The first is the implementation of new atomic data to well known Przybylski's star. We show that the number of spectral lines, which can be identificated in the spectrum of this star can be significantly higher. The second example is the investigation of zeta Cyg. We found the abundances of 51 elements in the atmosphere of this mild barium star.
