Quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetism and multiferroicity in CuCrO$_4$

The bulk magnetic properties of the new quasi-one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet, CuCrO$_4$, were characterized by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, optical spectroscopy, EPR and dielectric capacitance measurements and density functional evaluations of the intra- and interchain spin exchange interactions. We found type-II multiferroicity below the Néel temperature of 8.2(5) K, arising from competing antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor ($J_{\rm nn}$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($J_{\rm nnn}$) intra-chain spin exchange interactions. Experimental and theoretical results indicate that the ratio $J_{\rm nn}/J_{\rm nnn}$ is close to 2, putting CuCrO$_4$ in the vicinity of the Majumdar-Ghosh point.

Spin-Peierls transition in TiPO$_4$

We investigated the magnetic and structural properties of the quasi-one dimensional 3$d^1$-quantum chain system TiPO$_4$ ($J \sim$ 965 K) by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, ESR, x-ray diffraction, NMR measurements, and by density functional calculations. TiPO$_4$ undergoes two magnetostructural phase transitions, one at 111 K and the other at 74 K. Below 74 K, NMR detects two different $^{31}$P signals and the magnetic susceptibility vanishes, while DFT calculations evidence a bond alternation of the Ti...Ti distances within each chain. Thus, the 74 K phase transition is a spin-Peierls transition which evolves from an incommensurate phase existing between 111 K and 74 K.

Single-ion anisotropy, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and negative magnetoresistance of the spin-1/2 pyrochlores R2V2O7

The electronic and magnetic properties of spin-1/2 pyrochlores R2V2O7 were investigated on the basis of density-functional calculations. Contrary to the common belief, the spin-1/2 V4+ ions are found to have a substantial easy-axis single-ion anisotropy. The |D/J| ratio deduced from the magnon quantum Hall effect of Lu2V2O7, where J is the nearest-neighbor spin exchange and D is the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya parameter, is much greater than the value estimated from our calculations (i.e., 0.32 vs. 0.05). We show that this discrepancy is due to the neglect of the single-ion anisotropy of the V4+ ions, and the negative magnetoresistance observed for R2V2O7 arises from a new mechanism.

Ferromagnetically coupled Shastry-Sutherland quantum spin singlets in (CuCl)LaNb$_2$O$_7$

Using inelastic neutron scattering, x-ray, neutron diffraction, and the first-principle calculation techniques, we show that the crystal structure of the two-dimensional quantum spin system (CuCl)LaNb$_2$O$_7$ is orthorhombic with $Pbam$ symmetry in which CuCl$_4$O$_2$ octahedra are tilted from their high symmetry positions and the Cu$^{2+} (s = 1/2)$ ions form a distorted square lattice. The dominant magnetic interactions are the fourth nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions with a Cu-Cl--Cl-Cu exchange path, which lead to the formation of spin singlets. The two strongest interactions between the singlets are ferromagnetic, which makes (CuCl)LaNb$_2$O$_7$ the first system of ferromagnetically coupled Shastry-Sutherland quantum spin singlets.

Boron nitride substrates for high-quality graphene electronics

Graphene devices on standard SiO2 substrates are highly disordered, exhibiting characteristics far inferior to the expected intrinsic properties of graphene[1-12]. While suspending graphene above the substrate yields substantial improvement in device quality[13,14], this geometry imposes severe limitations on device architecture and functionality. Realization of suspended-like sample quality in a substrate supported geometry is essential to the future progress of graphene technology. In this Letter, we report the fabrication and characterization of high quality exfoliated mono- and bilayer graphene (MLG and BLG) devices on single crystal hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) substrates, by a mechanical transfer process. Variable-temperature magnetotransport measurements demonstrate that graphene devices on h-BN exhibit enhanced mobility, reduced carrier inhomogeneity, and reduced intrinsic doping in comparison with SiO2-supported devices. The ability to assemble crystalline layered materials in a controlled way sets the stage for new advancements in graphene electronics and enables realization of more complex graphene heterostructres.

Low-Latitude Coronal Holes at the Minimum of the 23rd Solar Cycle

Low and mid-latitude coronal holes (CHs) observed on the Sun during the current solar activity minimum (from September 21, 2006, Carrington rotation (CR) 2048, until June 26, 2009 (CR 2084)) were analyzed using {\it SOHO}/EIT and STEREO-A SECCHI EUVI data. From both the observations and Potential Field Source Surface (PFSS) modeling, we find that the area occupied by CHs inside a belt of $\pm 40^\circ$ around the solar equator is larger in the current 2007 solar minimum relative to the similar phase of the previous 1996 solar minimum. The enhanced CH area is related to a recurrent appearance of five persistent CHs, which survived during 7-27 solar rotations. Three of the CHs are of positive magnetic polarity and two are negative. The most long-lived CH was being formed during 2 days and existed for 27 rotations. This CH was associated with fast solar wind at 1 AU of approximately 620$\pm 40$ km s$^{-1}$. The 3D MHD modeling for this time period shows an open field structure above this CH. We conclude that the global magnetic field of the Sun possessed a multi-pole structure during this time period. Calculation of the harmonic power spectrum of the solar magnetic field demonstrates a greater prevalence of multi-pole components over the dipole component in the 2007 solar minimum compared to the 1996 solar minimum. The unusual large separation between the dipole and multi-pole components is due to the very low magnitude of the dipole component, which is three times lower than that in the previous 1996 solar minimum.

New measurements of the EMC effect in very light nuclei

New Jefferson Lab data are presented on the nuclear dependence of the inclusive cross section from 2H, 3He, 4He, 9Be and 12C for 0.3<x<0.9, Q^2 approximately 3-6 GeV^2. These data represent the first measurement of the EMC effect for 3He at large x and a significant improvement for 4He. The data do not support previous A-dependent or density-dependent fits to the EMC effect and suggest that the nuclear dependence of the quark distributions may depend on the local nuclear environment.

Magnetism of one-dimensional strongly repulsive spin-1 bosons with antiferromagnetic spin exchange interaction

We investigate magnetism and quantum phase transitions in a one-dimensional system of integrable spin-1 bosons with strongly repulsive density-density interaction and antiferromagnetic spin exchange interaction via the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz method. At zero temperature, the system exhibits three quantum phases: (i) a singlet phase of boson pairs when the external magnetic field $H$ is less than the lower critical field $H_{c1}$; (ii) a ferromagnetic phase of atoms in the hyperfine state $|F=1, m_{F}=1>$ when the external magnetic field exceeds the upper critical field $H_{c2}$; and (iii) a mixed phase of singlet pairs and unpaired atoms in the intermediate region $H_{c1}<H<H_{c2}$. At finite temperatures, the spin fluctuations affect the thermodynamics of the model through coupling the spin bound states to the dressed energy for the unpaired $m_{F}=1$ bosons. However, such spin dynamics is suppressed by a sufficiently strong external field at low temperatures. Thus the singlet pairs and unpaired bosons may form a two-component Luttinger liquid in the strong coupling regime.

Long-range surface plasmon polariton excitation at the quantum level

We provide the quantum mechanical description of the excitation of long-range surface plasmon polaritons (LRSPPs) on thin metallic strips. The excitation process consists of an attenuated-reflection setup, where efficient photon-to-LRSPP wavepacket-transfer is shown to be achievable. For calculating the coupling, we derive the first quantization of LRSPPs in the polaritonic regime. We study quantum statistics during propagation and characterize the performance of photon-to-LRSPP quantum state transfer for single-photons, photon-number states and photonic coherent superposition states.

Magnetic Ordering in the Frustrated Heisenberg Chain System Cupric Chloride, CuCl$_2$

We report a detailed examination the magnetic structure of anhydrous cupric chloride CuCl2 carried out by powder neutron diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements on polycrystalline and single crystal samples as well as an evaluation of the spin exchange interactions by first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Anhydrous CuCl2 shows one dimensional antiferromagnetic behavior and long range antiferromagnetic ordering below a Neel temperature of 23.9 K. Neutron powder and single crystal diffraction reveal that, below 23.9K, CuCl2 undergoes a phase transition into an incommensurate magnetic structure (propagation vector (1,0.2257,0.5) with a spin-spiral propagating along b and the moments confined in the bc crystallographic plane. Our DFT calculations show that the spin-spiral results from competing ferromagnetic nearest neighbor and antiferromagnetic next-nearest neighbor spin-exchange interaction along the spin chains. Implications for possible multiferroic behavior of CuCl2 are discussed.

Unified description of pairing, trionic and quarteting states for one-dimensional SU(4) attractive fermions

Paired states, trions and quarteting states in one-dimensional SU(4) attractive fermions are investigated via exact Bethe ansatz calculations. In particular, quantum phase transitions are identified and calculated from the quarteting phase into normal Fermi liquid, trionic states and spin-2 paired states which belong to the universality class of linear field-dependent magnetization in the vicinity of critical points. Moreover, unified exact results for the ground state energy, chemical potentials and complete phase diagrams for isospin $S=1/2, 1, 3/2$ attractive fermions with external fields are presented. Also identified are the magnetization plateaux of $m^z=M_s/3$ and $m^z=2M_s/3$, where $M_s$ is the magnetization saturation value. The universality of finite-size corrections and collective dispersion relations provides a further test ground for low energy effective field theory.

Hidden Symmetry and Mutiferroicity in a Triangular Spin Lattice With Proper-Screw-Spin Chain Order

The multiferroicity in a triangular spin lattice with proper-screw-spin chain order was explored by performing density functional calculations for AgCrO2 and analyzing the symmetry of the magnetic structure of the triangular spin lattice. Strong geometric spin frustration exists within and between CrO2 layers, and the ferroelectric polarization originates from the spiral-spin chain structures propagating across the proper-screw-spin chains. The triangular spin lattice can have ferroelectric polarization parallel to its mirror plane due to hidden symmetry.

Single-photon excitation of surface plasmon polaritons

We provide the quantum mechanical description of the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons on metal surfaces by single-photons. An attenuated-reflection setup is described for the quantum excitation process in which we find remarkably efficient photon-to-surface plasmon wavepacket-transfer. Using a fully quantized treatment of the fields, we introduce the Hamiltonian for their interaction and study the quantum statistics during transfer with and without losses in the metal.

Charge order in LuFe2O4: antiferroelectric ground state and coupling to magnetism

X-ray scattering by multiferroic LuFe2O4 is reported. Below 320 K, superstructure reflections indicate an incommensurate charge order with propagation close to (1/3,1/3,3/2). The corresponding charge configuration, also found by electronic structure calculations as most stable, contains polar Fe/O double-layers with antiferroelectric stacking. Diffuse scattering at 360 K, with (1/3,1/3,0) propagation, indicates ferroelectric short-range correlations between neighboring double-layers. The temperature dependence of the incommensuration indicates that charge order and magnetism are coupled.

Magnetic Phase Transitions in One-dimensional Strongly Attractive Three-Component Ultracold Fermions

We investigate the nature of trions, pairing and quantum phase transitions in one-dimensional strongly attractive three-component ultracold fermions in external fields. Exact results for the groundstate energy, critical fields, magnetization and phase diagrams are obtained analytically from the Bethe ansatz solutions. Driven by Zeeman splitting, the system shows exotic phases of trions, bound pairs, a normal Fermi liquid and four mixtures of these states. Particularly, a smooth phase transition from a trionic phase into a pairing phase occurs as the highest hyperfine level separates from the two lower energy levels. In contrast, there is a smooth phase transition from the trionic phase into a normal Fermi liquid as the lowest level separates from the two higher levels.

On the absence of a spiral magnetic order in Li2CuO2 with one-dimensional CuO2 ribbon chains

On the basis of first principles density functional theory electronic structure calculations as well as classical spin analysis, we explored why the magnetic oxide Li2CuO2, consisting of CuO2 ribbon chains made up of edge-sharing CuO4 squares, does not exhibit a spiral-magnetic order. Our work shows that, due to the next-nearest-neighbor interchain interactions, the observed collinear magnetic structure becomes only slightly less stable than the spin-spiral ground state, and many states become nearly degenerate in energy with the observed collinear structure. This suggests that the collinear magnetic structure of Li2CuO2 is a consequence of order-by-disorder induced by next-nearest-neighbor interchain interactions.

The 1D interacting Bose gas in a hard wall box

We consider the integrable one-dimensional delta-function interacting Bose gas in a hard wall box which is exactly solved via the coordinate Bethe Ansatz. The ground state energy, including the surface energy, is derived from the Lieb-Liniger type integral equations. The leading and correction terms are obtained in the weak coupling and strong coupling regimes from both the discrete Bethe equations and the integral equations. This allows the investigation of both finite-size and boundary effects in the integrable model. We also study the Luttinger liquid behaviour by calculating Luttinger parameters and correlations. The hard wall boundary conditions are seen to have a strong effect on the ground state energy and phase correlations in the weak coupling regime. Enhancement of the local two-body correlations is shown by application of the Hellmann-Feynman theorem.

Temperature effects on the 15-85-micron spectra of olivines and pyroxenes

Far-infrared spectra of laboratory silicates are normally obtained at room temperature even though the grains responsible for astronomical silicate emission bands seen at wavelengths >20 micron are likely to be at temperatures below ~150 K. In order to investigate the effect of temperature on silicate spectra, we have obtained absorption spectra of powdered forsterite and olivine, along with two orthoenstatites and diopside clinopyroxene, at 3.5+-0.5 K and at room temperature (295+-2K). To determine the changes in the spectra the resolution must be increased from 1 to 0.25 cm^-1 at both temperatures since a reduction in temperature reduces the phonon density, thereby reducing the width of the infrared peaks. Several bands observed at 295 K split at 3.5 K. At 3.5 K the widths of isolated single bands in olivine, enstatites and diopside are ~ 90% of their 295 K-widths. However, in forsterite the 3.5-K-widths of the 31-, 49- and 69-micron bands are, respectively, 90%, 45% and 31% of their 295 K widths. Due to an increase in phonon energy as the lattice contracts, 3.5-K-singlet peaks occur at shorter wavelengths than do the corresponding 295-K peaks; the magnitude of the wavelength shift increases from \~ 0-0.2 micron at 25 micron to ~0.9 micron at 80 micron. Changes in the relative absorbances of spectral peaks are also observed. The temperature dependence of lambda_pk and bandwidth shows promise as a means to deduce characteristic temperatures of mineralogically distinct grain populations. In addition, the observed changes in band strength with temperature will affect estimates of grain masses and relative mineral abundances inferred using room-temperature laboratory data.
