Pseudogap Suppression by Competition with Superconductivity in La-Based Cuprates

We have carried out a comprehensive high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the pseudogap interplay with superconductivity in La-based cuprates. The three systems La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, and La$_{1.8-x}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ display slightly different pseudogap critical points in the temperature versus doping phase diagram. We have studied the pseudogap evolution into the superconducting state for doping concentrations just below the critical point. In this setting, near optimal doping for superconductivity and in the presence of the weakest possible pseudogap, we uncover how the pseudogap is partially suppressed inside the superconducting state. This conclusion is based on the direct observation of a reduced pseudogap energy scale and re-emergence of spectral weight suppressed by the pseudogap. Altogether these observations suggest that the pseudogap phenomenon in La-based cuprates is in competition with superconductivity for anti-nodal spectral weight.

First Search for the $K_L \to π^0 γ$ Decay

We report the first search for the $K_L \to π^0 γ$ decay, which is forbidden by Lorentz invariance, using the data from 2016 to 2018 at the J-PARC KOTO experiment. With a single event sensitivity of $(7.1\pm 0.3_{\rm stat.} \pm 1.6_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-8}$, no candidate event was observed in the signal region. The upper limit on the branching fraction was set to be $1.7\times 10^{-7}$ at the 90\% confidence level.

Study of the $K_L \!\to\! π^0 ν\overlineν$ Decay at the J-PARC KOTO Experiment

The rare decay $K_L \!\to\! π^0 ν\overlineν$ was studied with the dataset taken at the J-PARC KOTO experiment in 2016, 2017, and 2018. With a single event sensitivity of $( 7.20 \pm 0.05_{\rm stat} \pm 0.66_{\rm syst} ) \times 10^{-10}$, three candidate events were observed in the signal region. After unveiling them, contaminations from $K^{\pm}$ and scattered $K_L$ decays were studied, and the total number of background events was estimated to be $1.22 \pm 0.26$. We conclude that the number of observed events is statistically consistent with the background expectation. For this dataset, we set an upper limit of $4.9 \times 10^{-9}$ on the branching fraction of $K_L \!\to\! π^0 ν\overlineν$ at the 90% confidence level.

Nematicity in the pseudogap state of cuprate superconductors revealed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The nature of the pseudogap and its relationship with superconductivity are one of the central issues of cuprate superconductors. Recently, a possible scenario has been proposed that the pseudogap state is a distinct phase characterized by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking called "nematicity" based on transport and magnetic susceptibility measurements, where the symmetry breaking was observed below the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. Here, we report a temperature-dependent ARPES study of nematicity in slightly overdoped Bi${}_{1.7}$Pb${}_{0.5}$Sr${}_{1.9}$CaCu${}_2$O${}_{8+δ}$ triggered by a uniaxial strain applied along one of the Cu-O bond directions. While the nematicity was enhanced in the pseudogap state as in the previous studies, it was suppressed in the superconducting state. These results indicate that the pseudogap state is characterized by spontaneous rotational symmetry breaking and that the nematicity may compete with superconductivity. These new experimental insights may provide clues for the nature of the pseudogap and its relation to the superconductivity.

Extended superconducting dome of electron-doped cuprates after protect annealing revealed by ARPES

The electron-doped cuprates are usually characterized by a more robust antiferromagnetic phase and a much narrower superconducting (SC) dome than those of the hole-doped counterparts. Recently, bulk single crystals of Pr1.3-xLa0.7CexCuO4-δ (PLCCO) prepared by the protect annealing method have been studied extensively and revealed many intriguing properties that were different from those obtained from samples annealed by the conventional methods. Here, we report on a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of PLCCO single crystals after protect annealing. The results indicate that the actual electron concentration (nFS ) estimated from the Fermi-surface area is significantly larger than the Ce concentration x and the new nFS-based SC dome of PLCCO is more extended towards the overdoped side than the x-based SC dome derived for samples prepared using the conventional annealing method.

Search for $K_L \!\to\! π^0 ν\overlineν$ and $K_L \!\to\! π^0 X^0$ Decays at the J-PARC KOTO Experiment

A search for the rare decay $K_L \!\to\! π^0 ν\overlineν$ was performed. With the data collected in 2015, corresponding to $2.2 \times 10^{19}$ protons on target, a single event sensitivity of $( 1.30 \pm 0.01_{\rm stat} \pm 0.14_{\rm syst} ) \times 10^{-9}$ was achieved and no candidate events were observed. We set an upper limit of $3.0 \times 10^{-9}$ for the branching fraction of $K_L \!\to\! π^0 ν\overlineν$ at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous limit by almost an order of magnitude. An upper limit for $K_L \!\to\! π^0 X^0$ was also set as $2.4 \times 10^{-9}$ at the 90% C.L., where $X^0$ is an invisible boson with a mass of $135~{\rm MeV}/c^2$.

Effect of Coulomb interaction on the two-dimensional electronic structure of the van der Waals ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$

In order to investigate the electronic properties of the semiconducting van der Waals ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ (CGT), where ferromagnetic layers are bonded through van der Waals forces, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density-functional-theory (DFT+U) calculations. The valence-band maximum at the Γ point is located $\sim$ 0.2 eV below the Fermi level, consistent with the semiconducting property of CGT. Comparison of the experimental density of states with the DFT calculation has suggested that Coulomb interaction between the Cr 3d electrons U$_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ 1.1 eV. The DFT+U calculation indicates that magnetic coupling between Cr atoms within the layer is ferromagnetic if Coulomb U $_{\rm eff}$ is smaller than 3.0 eV and that the inter-layer coupling is ferromagnetic below U$_{\rm eff}$ $\sim$ 1.0 eV. We therefore conclude that, for U$_{\rm eff}$ deduced by the experiment, the intra-layer Cr-Cr coupling is ferromagnetic and the inter-layer coupling is near the boundary between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic, which means experimentally deduced U$_{\rm eff}$ is consistent with theoretical ferromagnetic condition.

Spectral Energy Distributions for TeV Blazars

In this work, we collected a sample of 69 TeV blazars from TeVCat, obtained their multi-wavelength observations, and fitted their spectral energy distributions by using the second degree polynomial function. The structure parameters of the synchrotron bumps for 68 blazars and those of the inverse-Compton bumps for 56 blzars are obtained. Then, we adopted statistical analysis to the parameters (curvature, peak frequency, peak luminosity, bolometric luminosity, and X/$γ$-ray spectral indexes). From our analysis and discussions, we can get following conclusions: 1. There is a clear positive correlation between the synchrotron peak frequency, $\log ν_p^s$, and the inverse-Compton peak frequency $\log ν_p^{IC}$, and that between the synchrotron peak luminosity, $\log ν_p^s L_p^s$, and the inverse-Compton peak luminosity, $\log ν_p^{IC}L_p^{IC}$. 2. The correlation between the peak frequency and the curvature of synchrotron bump is clearly different from that of the inverse-Compton bump, which further indicates that there are different emission mechanisms between them. 3. There is a correlation between $\log ν_p^{IC}$ and $γ$-ray spectral index, $α_γ$, for the TeV blazars: $\log ν^{IC}_p = -(4.59 \pm 0.30) α_γ+ (32.67 \pm 0.59)$, which is consistent with previous work of Abdo et al.(2010). 4. An "L-shape" relation is found between $\log ν^s_p$ and $α_X$ for both TeV blazars and Fermi blazars. A significant correlation between $\log ν^s_p$ and X-ray photon index ($α_X$) is found for the TeV blazars with high synchrotron peak frequency: $\log ν^{s}_{p} = -(3.20 \pm 0.34) α_X + (24.33 \pm 0.79)$, while the correlation is positive for low synchrotron peaked TeV sources. 5. In the $α_X-α_γ$ diagram, there is also an "L-shape", the anti-correlation is consistent with the available results in the literature, (...)

Laser acceleration of highly energetic carbon ions using a double-layer target composed of slightly underdense plasma and ultrathin foil

We report the experimental generation of highly energetic carbon ions up to 48 MeV per nucleon by shooting double-layer targets composed of well-controlled slightly underdense plasma (SUP) and ultrathin foils with ultra-intense femtosecond laser pulses. Particle-in-cell simulations reveal that carbon ions residing in the ultrathin foils undergo radiation pressure acceleration and long-time sheath field acceleration in sequence due to the existence of the SUP in front of the foils. Such an acceleration scheme is especially suited for heavy ion acceleration with femtosecond laser pulses. The breakthrough of heavy ion energy up to multi-tens of MeV/u at high-repetition-rate would be able to trigger significant advances in nuclear physics, high energy density physics, and medical physics.

Distribution uniformity of laser-accelerated proton beams

Compared with conventional accelerators, laser plasma accelerators can generate high energy ions at a greatly reduced scale, due to their TV/m acceleration gradient. A compact laser plasma accelerator (CLAPA) has been built at the Institute of Heavy Ion Physics at Peking University. It will be used for applied research like biological irradiation, astrophysics simulations, etc. A beamline system with multiple quadrupoles and an analyzing magnet for laser-accelerated ions is proposed here. Since laser-accelerated ion beams have broad energy spectra and large angular divergence, the parameters (beam waist position in the Y direction, beam line layout, drift distance, magnet angles etc.) of the beamline system are carefully designed and optimised to obtain a radially symmetric proton distribution at the irradiation platform. Requirements of energy selection and differences in focusing or defocusing in application systems greatly influence the evolution of proton distributions. With optimal parameters, radially symmetric proton distributions can be achieved and protons with different energy spread within 5% have similar transverse areas at the experiment target.

The Intrinsic $γ$-ray Emissions of $Fermi$ Blazars

Beaming effect is important for the observational properties of blazars. In this work, we collect 91 $Fermi$ blazars with available radio Doppler factors. $γ$-ray Doppler factors are estimated and compared with radio Doppler factors for some sources. The intrinsic (de-beamed) $γ$-ray flux density ($f^{\rm in}_γ$), intrinsic $γ$-ray luminosity ($L^{\rm in}_γ$), and intrinsic synchrotron peak frequency ($ν_{\rm p}^{\rm in}$) are calculated. Then we study the correlations between $f^{\rm in}_γ$ and redshift and find that they follow the theoretical relation: $\log f = -2.0 \log z + {\rm const}$. When the subclasses are considered, we find that stationary jets are perhaps dominant in low synchrotron peaked blazars. 63 $Fermi$ blazars with both available short variability time scales ($ΔT$) and Doppler factors are also collected. We find that the intrinsic relationship between $L ^{\rm in}_γ$ and $ΔT^{\rm in}$ obeys the Elliot \& Shapiro and the Abramowicz \& Nobili relations. Strong positive correlation between $f_γ^{\rm in}$ and $ν_{\rm p}^{\rm in}$ is found, suggesting that synchrotron emissions are highly correlated with $γ$-ray emissions.

The Variability and Period Analysis for the BL Lac AO 0235+164

Variability is one of the extreme observational properties of BL Lacertae objects. AO 0235+164 is a well studied BL Lac through the whole electro-magnetic wavebands. In the present work, we show its optical R band photometric observations carried out during the period of Nov, 2006 to Dec. 2012 using the Ap6E CCD camera attached to the primary focus of the $\rm 70-cm$ meniscus telescope at Abastumani Observatory, Georgia. It shows a large variation of $ΔR$ = 4.88 mag (14.19 - 19.07 mag) and a short time scale of $ΔT_v$ = 73.5 min during our monitoring period. During the period of Dec. 2006 to Nov. 2009, we made radio observations of the source using the 25-m radio telescope at Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory. When a discrete correlation function (DCF) is adopted to the optical and radio observations, we found that the optical variation leads the radio variation by 23.2$\pm$12.9 days.

Intrinsic Correlations for Flaring Blazars Detected by Fermi

Blazars are an extreme subclass of active galactic nuclei. Their rapid variability, luminous brightness, superluminal motion, and high and variable polarization are probably due to a beaming effect. However, this beaming factor (or Doppler factor) is very difficult to measure. Currently, a good way to estimate it is to use the time scale of their radio flares. In this $Letter$, we use multiwavelength data and Doppler factors reported in the literatures for a sample of 86 flaring blazars detected by Fermi to compute their intrinsic multiwavelength data and intrinsic spectral energy distributions, and investigate the correlations among observed and intrinsic data. Quite interestingly, intrinsic data show a positive correlation between luminosity and peak frequency, in contrast with the behavior of observed data, and a tighter correlation between $γ$-ray luminosity and the lower energy ones. For flaring blazars detected by Fermi, we conclude that (1) Observed emissions are strongly beamed; (2) The anti-correlation between luminosity and peak frequency from the observed data is an apparent result, the correlation between intrinsic data being positive; and (3) Intrinsic $γ$-ray luminosity is strongly correlated with other intrinsic luminosities.

A new search for the $K_{L} \to π^0 ν\overlineν$ and $K_{L} \to π^{0} X^{0}$ decays

We searched for the $CP$-violating rare decay of neutral kaon, $K_{L} \to π^0 ν\overlineν$, in data from the first 100 hours of physics running in 2013 of the J-PARC KOTO experiment. One candidate event was observed while $0.34\pm0.16$ background events were expected. We set an upper limit of $5.1\times10^{-8}$ for the branching fraction at the 90\% confidence level (C.L.). An upper limit of $3.7\times10^{-8}$ at the 90\% C.L. for the $K_{L} \to π^{0} X^{0}$decay was also set for the first time, where $X^{0}$ is an invisible particle with a mass of 135 MeV/$c^{2}$.

The Spectral Energy Distributions of Fermi Blazars

(Abridged) In this paper, multi-wavelength data are compiled for a sample of 1425 Fermi blazars to calculate their spectral energy distributions (SEDs). A parabolic function, $\log(νF_ν) = P_1(\logν- P_2)^2 + P_3,$ is used for SED fitting. Synchrotron peak frequency ($\log ν_p$), spectral curvature ($P_1$), peak flux ($ν_{\rm p}F_{\rm ν_p}$), and integrated flux ($νF_ν$) are successfully obtained for 1392 blazars (461 flat spectrum radio quasars-FSRQs, 620 BL Lacs-BLs and 311 blazars of uncertain type-BCUs, 999 sources have known redshifts). Monochromatic luminosity at radio 1.4 GHz, optical R band, X-ray at 1 keV and $γ$-ray at 1 GeV, peak luminosity, integrated luminosity and effective spectral indexes of radio to optical ($α_{\rm RO}$), and optical to X-ray ($α_{\rm OX}$) are calculated. The "Bayesian classification" is employed to log$ν_{\rm p}$ in the rest frame for 999 blazars with available redshift and the results show that 3 components are enough to fit the $\logν_{\rm p}$ distribution, there is no ultra high peaked subclass. Based on the 3 components, the subclasses of blazars using the acronyms of Abdo et al. (2010a) are classified, and some mutual correlations are also studied. Conclusions are finally drawn as follows: (1) SEDs are successfully obtained for 1392 blazars. The fitted peak frequencies are compared with common sources from samples available (Sambruna et al. 1996, Nieppola et al. 2006, 2008, Abdo et al. 2010a). (2) Blazars are classified as low synchrotron peak sources (LSPs) if $\logν_{\rm p}$(Hz) $\leq 14.0$, intermediate synchrotron peak sources (ISPs) if $14.0 < \logν_{\rm p}$(Hz) $\leq 15.3$, and high synchrotron peak sources (HSPs) if $\logν_{\rm p}$(Hz) $> 15.3$. (3) $γ$-ray emissions are strongly correlated with radio emissions. (...)

Comparison between TeV and non-TeV BL Lac Objects

BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs) is the dominant population of TeV emitting blazars. In this work, we investigate whether there is any special observational properties for TeV sources. To do so, we will compare the observational properties of TeV detected BL Lacs (TeV BLs) and non-TeV detected BL Lac objects (non-TeV BLs). From the 3rd $Fermi$/LAT catalog (3FGL), we can get 662 BL Lacs, out of which, 47 are TeV BLs and 615 are non-TeV BLs. Their multi-wavelength flux densities ($F_{\rm R}$, $F_{\rm O}$, $F_{\rm X}$, $F_γ$), photon spectral indexes ($α_{\rm X}^{\rm ph}$, $α_γ^{\rm ph}$), and effective spectral indexes ($α_{\rm RO}$ and $α_{\rm OX}$) are compiled from the available literatures. Then the luminosities ($\log\,νL_{\rm R}$, $\log\,νL_{\rm O}$, $\log\,νL_{\rm X}$, $\log\,νL_γ$) are calculated. From comparisons, we found that TeV BLs are different from low-synchrotron-peaked BLs (LSP) and intermediate-synchrotron-peaked BLs (ISP), but TeV BLs show similar properties as high-synchrotron-peaked BLs (HSP). Therefore, we concentrated on comparison between TeV HSP BLs and non-TeV HSP BLs. Analysis results suggest that TeV HSP BLs and non-TeV HSP BLs show some differences in their $α_{\rm RO}$ and $α_γ^{\rm ph}$, while their other properties are quite similar.

A new variable for SRS plan quality evaluation based on normal tissue sparing: The Effect of Prescription Isodose Levels

Objectives: A new dosimetric variable, dose dropping speed (DDS), was proposed and used to evaluate normal tissue sparing among stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) plans with different prescription isodose lines. Methods: Forty plans were generated for 8 intracranial SRS cases, prescribing to isodose levels (IDLs) ranging from 50% to 90% in 10% increments. Whilst maintaining similar coverage and conformity, plans at different IDLs were evaluated in terms of normal tissue sparing using the proposed DDS. The DDS was defined as the greater decay coefficient in a double exponential decay fit of the dose drop-off outside the PTV, which models the steep portion of the drop-off. Provided that the prescription dose covers the whole PTV, a greater DDS indicates better normal tissue sparing. Results: Among all plans, the DDS was found the lowest for the prescription at 90% IDL and the highest for the prescription at 60% or 70%. Beam profile slope change in penumbra and its field size dependence were explored and given as the physical basis of the findings. Conclusions: A variable was proposed for SRS plan quality evaluation. Using this measure, prescriptions at 60% and 70% IDLs were found to provide best normal tissue sparing. Advances in knowledge: A new variable was proposed based on which normal tissue sparing was quantitatively evaluated, comparing different prescription IDLs in SRS.

A Random Search Framework for Convergence Analysis of Distributed Beamforming with Feedback

The focus of this work is on the analysis of transmit beamforming schemes with a low-rate feedback link in wireless sensor/relay networks, where nodes in the network need to implement beamforming in a distributed manner. Specifically, the problem of distributed phase alignment is considered, where neither the transmitters nor the receiver has perfect channel state information, but there is a low-rate feedback link from the receiver to the transmitters. In this setting, a framework is proposed for systematically analyzing the performance of distributed beamforming schemes. To illustrate the advantage of this framework, a simple adaptive distributed beamforming scheme that was recently proposed by Mudambai et al. is studied. Two important properties for the received signal magnitude function are derived. Using these properties and the systematic framework, it is shown that the adaptive distributed beamforming scheme converges both in probability and in mean. Furthermore, it is established that the time required for the adaptive scheme to converge in mean scales linearly with respect to the number of sensor/relay nodes.
