Observation of gamma rays up to 320 TeV from the middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula HESS J1849$-$000

Gamma rays from HESS J1849$-$000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches $4.0\, σ$ and $4.4\, σ$ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of Gaussian standard deviation $σ$. The energy spectrum measured between $40\, {\rm TeV} < E < 320\, {\rm TeV}$ for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (2.86 \pm 1.44) \times 10^{-16}(E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-2.24 \pm 0.41}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV ($E < 1\, {\rm TeV}$) to sub-PeV ($100\, {\rm TeV} < E < 1\, {\rm PeV}$) ranges including the results of previous studies can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, inverse Compton scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849$-$0001. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can also be modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons $E_{\rm p\, cut}$, cut is estimated at ${\rm log}_{10}(E_{\rm p,\, cut}/{\rm TeV}) = 3.73^{+2.98}_{-0.66}$, suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range. Our study thus proposes that HESS J1849$-$000 should be further investigated as a new candidate for a Galactic PeV cosmic-ray accelerator, PeVatron.

Exploring asymmetric substructures of the outer disk based on the conjugate angle of the radial action

We use the conjugate angle of radial action ($θ_R$), the best representation of the orbital phase, to explore the "mid-plane, north branch, south branch" and "Monoceros area" disk structures that were previously revealed in the LAMOST K giants (Xu et al. 2020). The former three substructures, identified by their 3D kinematical distributions, have been shown to be projections of the phase space spiral (resulting from nonequilibrium phase mixing). In this work, we find that all of these substructures associated with the phase spiral show high aggregation in conjugate angle phase space, indicating that the clumping in conjugate angle space is a feature of ongoing, incomplete phase mixing. We do not find the $Z-V_Z$ phase spiral located in the "Monoceros area", but we do find a very highly concentrated substructure in the quadrant of conjugate angle space with the orbital phase from the apocenter to the guiding radius. The existence of the clump in conjugate angle space provides a complementary way to connect the "Monoceros area" with the direct response to a perturbation from a significant gravitationally interactive event. Using test particle simulations, we show that these features are analogous to disturbances caused by the impact of the last passage of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy.

Study of the surface lattice resonance on basis orientation for achieving ultrahigh quality factor > 12000

Periodic nanoparticle arrays can support surface lattice resonances (SLRs), which arise from the hybridization between localized surface plasmons (LSPs) and diffractive Rayleigh anomalies (RAs). In contrast to LSPs, SLRs enjoy a much higher quality (Q) factor. As the Q factor depends on many system parameters, a good understanding of them is essential for optimization. Here, we study the dependence of the Q factor of SLR from 2D Au nanorod arrays on nanorod orientation. It is found the Q factor is 112 when the nanorod is lying perpendicular to the incident plane but gradually increases by more than 13 times to 1460 upon rotating it azimuthally. The increase of the Q factor is due to the interplay between the coupling strength and the frequency detuning between the LSP and RA as well as the decay rate of the LSP. By optimizing these parameters, we can achieve a Q factor reaching over 12000, which is 6 times higher than the best reported so far.

GBT20, a 20.48 Gbps PAM4 Optical Transmitter Module for Particle Physics Experiments

We present a pluggable radiation-tolerant 4-level Pulse-Amplitude-Modulation (PAM4) optical transmitter module called GBT20 (Giga-Bit Transmitter at 20 Gbps) for particle-physics experiments. GBT20 has an OSFP or firefly connector to input 16-bit data each at 1.28 Gbps. The GBT20 drives a VCSEL die with an LC lens or a VCSEL TOSA and interfaces an optical fiber with a standard LC connector. The minimum module, including the host connector, occupies 41 mm x 13 mm x 6 mm. At 20.48 Gbps, the minimum Transmitter Dispersion Eye Closure Quaternary (TDECQ) is around 0.7 dB. The power consumption is around 164 mW in the low-power mode. The SEE cross-section is below 7.5x10^(-14) cm^2. No significant performance degrades after a TID of 5.4 kGy.

The design and test results of A Giga-Bit Cable Receiver (GBCR) for the ATLAS Inner Tracker Pixel Detector

This paper presents the design and test results of a Gigabit Cable Receiver ASIC called GBCR for the HL-LHC upgrade of the ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk) pixel detector. Three prototypes (GBCR1, GBCR2, and GBCR3) have been designed in the CERN-identified 65 nm CMOS technology. GBCR receives seven (GBCR2) or six (GBCR3) channels (RX) each at 1.28 Gbps from the front-end readout chip RD53B via flex cables up to 1 meter and Twinax cables up to 5 meters and sends the equalized and retimed signals to lpGBT. Both GBCR2 and GBCR3 ASICs have two transmitting channels (TX) that pre-emphasize the signals from lpGBT before sending them to RD53B through the same cables. No Single-Event Upset (SEU) is observed in any tested channels of GBCR2 in a 400 MeV proton beam. The extrapolated bit error rate for the future HL-LHC application is below 8*10^(-16), significantly below the specified BER criterion. GBCR3 is designed to improve the immunity to single-event-upset by applying the Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) technology to all RX channels. The retimed signals from GBCR3 have less total jitter than those from GBCR2 (35 ps versus 79 ps). Each receiver channel of GBCR3 consumes 75% more power than that of GBCR2.

The phase shifter has a coarse-phase shifter and a fine-phase shifter to achieve a step size of 97.7 ps and an adjustable range of 25 ns. The fine delay unit is based on a Delay Locked Loop (DLL) operating at 640 MHz. The phase shifter is fabricated in a 130 nm CMOS process. The area of the phase shifter is 725 um x 248 um. The Differential Non-Linearity (DNL) and the Integral Non-Linearity (INL) are +/-0.6 LSB and +/-0.75 LSB, respectively. The jitter from -25 C to 20 C is less than 15.5 ps (RMS), including the contributions from the FPGA clock source and the PLL. The power consumption is 11.2 mW.

Searching for Supernovae in HETDEX Data Release 3

We have extracted 636 spectra taken at the positions of 583 transient sources from the third Data Release of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy eXperiment (HETDEX). The transients were discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) during 2018 - 2022. The HETDEX spectra are useful to classify a large number of objects found by photometric surveys for free. We attempt to explore and classify the spectra by utilizing machine learning (ML) and template matching techniques. We have identified two transient sources, ZTF20aatpoos = AT2020fiz and ZTF19abdkelq as supernova candidates. We classify AT2020fiz as a Type IIP supernova observed ~10 days after explosion, and we propose ZTF19abdkelq as a likely Type Ia SN caught ~40 days after maximum light. ZTF photometry of these two sources are consistent with their classification as supernovae. Beside these two objects, we have confirmed several ZTF transients as variable AGNs based on their spectral appearance, and also determined the host galaxy types for several other ZTF transients.

Record High Tc Element Superconductivity Achieved In Titanium

It is challenging to search for high Tc superconductivity (SC) in transition metal elements wherein d electrons are usually not favored by conventional BCS theory. Here we report discovery of surprising SC up to 310 GPa with Tc above 20 K in wide pressure range from 108 GPa to 240 GPa in titanium. The maximum Tc^onset above 26 K and zero resistance Tc^zero of 21 K are record high values hitherto achieved among element superconductors. The Hc2(0) is estimated to be about 32 Tesla with coherence length 32 angstrom. The results show strong s-d transfer and d-band dominance, indicating correlation driven contributions to high Tc SC in dense titanium. This finding is in sharp contrast to the theoretical predications based on pristine electron-phonon coupling scenario. The study opens a fresh promising avenue for rational design and discovery of high Tc superconductors among simple materials via pressure tuned unconventional mechanism.

Precise determination of the 2s22p5-2s2p6 transition energy in fluorine-like nickel utilizing a low-lying dielectronic resonance

High precision spectroscopy of the low-lying dielectronic resonances in fluorine-like nickel ions were determined by employing the merged electron-ion beam at the heavy-ion storage ring CSRm. The measured dielectronic resonances are identified by comparing with the most recent relativistic calculation utilizing the FAC code. The first resonance at about 86 meV due to the dielectronic recombination via (2s2p6[2S1/2]6s)J=1 intermediate state was recognized. The experimental determination of the resonance position at 86 meV reaches an uncertainty of 4 meV, which allows precise determination of the 2s22p5[2P3/2] - 2s2p6[2S1/2] transition energy. The Rydberg binding energy of the 6s electron in the (2s2p6[2S1/2]6s)J=1 state is calculated by the multi-configurational Dirac-HartreeFock and stabilization methods. The determined transition energies are 149.056(4)exp(10)theo and 149.032(4)exp(6)theo, respectively. Moreover, the transition energy has also been calculated by fully relativistic and ab initio approaches. Individual theoretical contributions are evaluated by employing the core-Hartree and Kohn-Sham screening potentials, respectively. High-order QED and correlation effects contribute prominently to the total transition energy. The present DR precision spectroscopy study at the CSRm paves the way for future precision measurements of atomic energy levels with heavier highly charged ions.

Valence bond glass state in the 4$d^1$ fcc antiferromagnet Ba$_2$LuMoO$_6$

$B$-site ordered 4$d^1$ and 5$d^1$ double perovskites have a number of potential novel ground states including multipolar order, quantum spin liquids and valence bond glass states. These arise from the complex interactions of spin-orbital entangled $J_{eff}$ = 3/2 pseudospins on the geometrically frustrated fcc lattice. The 4$d^1$ Mo$^{5+}$ perovskite Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$ has been suggested to have a valence bond glass ground state. Here we report on the low temperature properties of powder samples of isostructural Ba$_2$LuMoO$_6$: the only other known cubic 4$d^1$ perovskite with one magnetic cation. Our muon spectroscopy experiments show that magnetism in this material remains dynamic down to 60 mK without any spin freezing or magnetic order. A singlet-triplet excitation with a gap of $Δ$ = 28 meV is observed in inelastic neutron scattering. These results are interpreted as a disordered valence bond glass ground state similar to Ba$_2$YMoO$_6$. Our results highlight the differences of the 4$d^1$ double perovskites in comparison to cubic 5$d^1$ analogues, which have both magnetic and multipolar order.

A 40 Gbps Optical Transceiver for Particle Physics Experiments

We present the design and the test results of a quad-channel optical transceiver module (QTRx) possibly for future particle physics experiments. The transmitters of QTRx, each at 10 Gbps, are based on a Quad-channel VCSEL Diode array Driver (QLDD) and 1 x 4 VCSEL array. The receivers of QTRx, with data rates of 2.56 Gbps or 10 Gbps per channel, are based on a Quad-channel Trans-Impedance and limiting Amplifier (QTIA) and 1 x 4 photodiode array of GaAs or InGaAs. QTRx is 20 mm x 10 mm x 5 mm and couples to an MT fiber connector. Test results indicate that QTRx achieves the design goals with a power consumption of 124 mW per transmitter channel at 10 Gbps and 120 mW at 2.56 Gbps for the receiver channel with an on-chip charge pump. The sensitivities of QTIA are -17 dBm at 2.56 Gbps and -8 dBm at 10 Gbps, respectively. Further improvements with a gold-finger interface and a more compact optical lens are being designed.

Realization of topological superlattices and the associated interface states in one-dimensional plasmonic crystals

In analogous to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model, one-dimensional (1D) electromagnetic (EM) crystals can exhibit nontrivial topological properties. In particular, when a nontrivial EM crystal is in contact with its trivial counterpart, a topologically protected interface state is formed. While much attention has been focused on single interface state, multiple interface states can interact collectively when under suitable conditions, giving rise to trivial or nontrivial band topologies resembling to the standard SSH model. Here, we study the topological properties of 1D metallic superlattices that support multiple interface states. We first demonstrate single interface state exists at the boundary between two topologically distinct metallic arrays that carry Bloch-like surface plasmon polaritons. Such interface state is then used as the building block for further constructing the superlattices. By exploiting the separation between two dimerized interface states and the distinct inter- and intra-interface configurations to facilitate different intracell and intercell interactions, we vary the band topology of the superlattices. More importantly, new superlattice interface state is formed when trivial and nontrivial superlattices are brought together. The superlattice interface state is found to have smaller angular divergence and longer localization length than its single counterpart, thus is desired for robust signal transmission and high finesse cavity.

A radiation tolerant clock generator for the CMS Endcap Timing Layer readout chip

We present the test results of a low jitter Phase Locked Loop (PLL) prototype chip for the CMS Endcap Timing Layer readout chip (ETROC). This chip is based on the improved version of a clock synthesis circuit named ljCDR from the Low-Power Gigabit Transceiver (lpGBT) project. The ljCDR is tested in its PLL mode. An automatic frequency calibration (AFC) block with the Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) register is developed for the LC-oscillator calibration. The chip was manufactured in a 65 nm CMOS process with 10 metal layers. The chip has been extensively tested, including Total Ionizing Dose (TID) testing up to 300 Mrad and Single Event Upset (SEU) testing with heavy ions possessing a Linear energy transfer (LET) from 1.3 to 62.5 MeV*cm^2/mg.

QTIA, a 2.5 or 10 Gbps 4-Channel Array Optical Receiver ASIC in a 65 nm CMOS Technology

The Quad transimpedance and limiting amplifier (QTIA) is a 4-channel array optical receiver ASIC, developed using a 65 nm CMOS process. It is configurable between the bit rate of 2.56 Gbps and 10 Gbps per channel. QTIA offers careful matching to both GaAs and InGaAs photodiodes. At this R&D stage, each channel has a different biasing scheme to the photodiode for optimal coupling. A charge pump is implemented in one channel to provide a higher reverse bias voltage, which is especially important to mitigate radiation effects on the photodiodes. The circuit functions of QTIA successfully passed the lab tests with GaAs photodiodes.

A 20 Gbps PAM4 Data Transmitter ASIC for Particle Physics Experiments

We present the design and test results of a novel data transmitter ASIC operating up to 20.48 Gbps with 4-level Pulse-Amplitude-Modulation (PAM4) for particle physics experiments. This ASIC, named GBS20, is fabricated in a 65 nm CMOS technology. Two serializers share a 5.12 GHz Phase Locked Loop (PLL) clock. The outputs from the serializers are combined into a PAM4 signal that directly drives a Vertical-Cavity-Surface-Emitting-Laser (VCSEL). The input data channels, each at 1.28 Gbps, are scrambled with an internal 27-1 Pseudo-Random Binary Sequence (PRBS), which also serves as a frame aligner. GBS20 is tested to work at 10.24 and 20.48 Gbps with a VCSEL-based Transmitter-Optical-Subassembly (TOSA). The power consumption of GBS20 is below 238 mW and reduced to 164 mW in the low-power mode.

Robust Dirac lines against Ge vacancy and possible spin-orbit Dirac points in nonsymmorphic HfGe0.92Te

Looking for new materials with Dirac points has been a fascinating subject of research. Here we report the growth, crystal structure, and band structure of HfGe0.92Te single crystals, featuring three different types of Dirac points. HfGe0.92Te crystalizes in a nonsymmorphic tetragonal space group P4/nmm (No. 129), having square Ge-atom plane with vacancies about 8%. Despite the vacancies on Ge site, the Dirac nodal line composed of conventional Dirac points vulnerable to spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is observed using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, accompanied with the robust Dirac line protected by the nonsymmorphic symmetry against both SOC and vacancies. Specially, spin-orbit Dirac points (SDPs) originated from the surface formed under SOC are hinted to exist according to our experiments and calculations. Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) characters are observed and further confirmed by angular-resolved magnetoresistance. HfGe0.92Te is a good candidate to explore exotic topological phases or topological properties with three different types of Dirac points and a promising candidate to realize 2D SDPs.
