Transient Superdiffusive Motion on a Disordered Ratchet Potential

The relationship between anomalous superdiffusive behavior and particle trapping probability is analyzed on a rocking ratchet potential with spatially correlated weak disorder. The trapping probability density is shown, analytically and numerically, to have an exponential form as a function of space. The trapping processes with a low or no thermal noise are only transient, but they can last much longer than the characteristic time scale of the system and therefore might be detected experimentally. Using the result for the trapping probability we obtain an analytical expression for the number of wells where a given number of particles are trapped. We have also obtained an analytical approximation for the second-moment of the particle distribution function C2 as a function of time, when trapped particles coexist with constant velocity untrapped particles. We also use the expression for C2 to characterize the anomalous superdiffusive motion in the absence of thermal noise for the transient time.

Quantum Game Application to Spectrum Scarcity Problems

Recent spectrum-sharing research has produced a strategy to address spectrum scarcity problems. This novel idea, named cognitive radio, considers that secondary users can opportunistically exploit spectrum holes left temporarily unused by primary users. This presents a competitive scenario among cognitive users, making it suitable for game theory treatment. In this work, we show that the spectrum-sharing benefits of cognitive radio can be increased by designing a medium access control based on quantum game theory. In this context, we propose a model to manage spectrum fairly and effectively, based on a multiple-users multiple-choice quantum minority game. By taking advantage of quantum entanglement and quantum interference, it is possible to reduce the probability of collision problems commonly associated with classic algorithms. Collision avoidance is an essential property for classic and quantum communications systems. In our model, two different scenarios are considered, to meet the requirements of different user strategies. The first considers sensor networks where the rational use of energy is a cornerstone; the second focuses on installations where the quality of service of the entire network is a priority.

Quantum Dating Market

We consider the dating market decision problem under the quantum mechanics point of view. Quantum states whose associated amplitudes are modified by men strategies are used to represent women. Grover quantum search algorithm is used as a playing strategy. Success is more frequently obtained by playing quantum than playing classic.

Entropic Studies of Cytoskeletal Motors Jamming

Can the different causes for disruption of intracellular transport be traced from the trajectories of the molecular motors on the cytoskeletal filaments? We will attempt to answer this important question in a Monte Carlo model of microtubule-motor protein interaction from the point of view of information theory.

Trapping mechanism in overdamped ratchets with quenched noise

A trapping mechanism is observed and proposed as the origin of the anomalous behavior recently discovered in transport properties of overdamped ratchets subject to external oscillatory drive in the presence of quenched noise. In particular, this mechanism is shown to appear whenever the quenched disorder strength is greater than a threshold value. The minimum disorder strength required for the existence of traps is determined by studying the trap structure in a disorder configuration space. An approximation to the trapping probability density function in a disordered region of finite length included in an otherwise perfect ratchet lattice is obtained. The mean velocity of the particles and the diffusion coefficient are found to have a non-monotonic dependence on the quenched noise strength due to the presence of the traps.

Converting genetic network oscillations into somite spatial pattern

In most vertebrate species, the body axis is generated by the formation of repeated transient structures called somites. This spatial periodicity in somitogenesis has been related to the temporally sustained oscillations in certain mRNAs and their associated gene products in the cells forming the presomatic mesoderm. The mechanism underlying these oscillations have been identified as due to the delays involved in the synthesis of mRNA and translation into protein molecules [J. Lewis, Current Biol. {\bf 13}, 1398 (2003)]. In addition, in the zebrafish embryo intercellular Notch signalling couples these oscillators and a longitudinal positional information signal in the form of an Fgf8 gradient exists that could be used to transform these coupled temporal oscillations into the observed spatial periodicity of somites. Here we consider a simple model based on this known biology and study its consequences for somitogenesis. Comparison is made with the known properties of somite formation in the zebrafish embryo . We also study the effects of localized Fgf8 perturbations on somite patterning.

Paradoxical Way for Losers in a Dating Game

We study the dating market decision problem in which men and women repeatedly go out on dates and learn about each other. We consider a model for the dating market that takes into account progressive mutual learning. This model consists of a repeated game in which agents gain an uncertain payoff from being matched with a particular person on the other side of the market in each time period. Players have a list of preferred partners on the other set. The players that reach higher rank levels on the other set preferences list have also higher probability to be accepted for dating. A question can be raised, as considered in this study: Can the less appreciated players do better? Two different kinds of dating game are combined "a la Parrondo" to foster the less attractive players. Optimism seems to be highly recommendable, especially for losers.

Lagrangian Description of the Variational Equations

A variant of the usual Lagrangian scheme is developed which describes both the equations of motion and the variational equations of a system. The required (prolonged) Lagrangian is defined in an extended configuration space comprising both the original configurations of the system and all the virtual displacements joining any two integral curves. Our main result establishes that both the Euler-Lagrange equations and the corresponding variational equations of the original system can be viewed as the Lagrangian vector field associated with the first prolongation of the original LagrangianAfter discussing certain features of the formulation, we introduce the so-called inherited constants of the motion and relate them to the Noether constants of the extended system.

Noether's theorem for the variational equations

We introduce an generalized action functional describing the equations of motion and the variational equations for any Lagrangian system. Using this novel scheme we are able to generalize Noether's theorem in such a way that to any $n$-parameter continuous symmetry group of the Lagrangian there exist 1) the usual $n$ constants of motion and 2) $n$ extra constants valid in the variational equations. The new constants are related to the infinitesimal generators of the symmetry transformation by relations similar to the ones that stem from the `nonextended' Noether theorem.

Control of Current Reversal in Single and Multiparticle Inertia Ratchets

We have studied the deterministic dynamics of underdamped single and multiparticle ratchets associated with current reversal, as a function of the amplitude of the external driving force. Two experimentally inspired methods are used. In the first method the same initial condition is used for each new value of the amplitude. In the second method the last position and velocity is used as the new initial condition when the amplitude is changed. The two methods are found to be complementary for control of current reversal, because the first one elucidates the existence of different attractors and gives information about their basins of attraction, while the second method, although history dependent, shows the locking process. We show that control of current reversals in deterministic intertia ratchets is possible as a consequence of a locking process associated with different mean velocity attractors. An unlocking efect is produced when a chaos to order transition limits the control range.

Quenched Disorder Effects on Deterministic Inertia Ratchets

The effect of quenched disorder on the underdamped motion of a periodically driven particle on a ratchet potential is studied. As a consequence of disorder, current reversal and chaotic diffusion may take place on regular trajectories. On the other hand, on some chaotic trajectories disorder induces regular motion. A localization effect similar to {\sl Golosov Phenomenon} sets in whenever a disorder threshold that depends on the mass of the particle is reached. Possible applications of the localization phenomenon are discussed.

Disorder Induced Diffusive Transport In Ratchets

The effects of quenched disorder on the overdamped motion of a driven particle on a periodic, asymmetric potential is studied. While for the unperturbed potential the transport is due to a regular drift, the quenched disorder induces a significant additional chaotic ``diffusive'' motion. The spatio-temporal evolution of the statistical ensemble is well described by a Gaussian distribution, implying a chaotic transport in the presence of quenched disorder.

Fractal Analysis of Electrical Power Time Series

Fractal time series has been shown to be self-affine and are characterized by a roughness exponent H. The exponent H is a measure of the persistence of the fluctuations associated with the time series. We use a recently introduced method for measuring the roughness exponent, the mobile averages analysis, to compare electrical power demand of two different places, a touristic city and a whole country.

Fractal Analysis for Social Systems

This is a brief introduction to fractals, multifractals and wavelets in an accessible way, in order that the founding ideas of those strange and intriguing newcomers to science as fractals may be communicated to a wider public. Fractals are the geometry of the wildness of nature, where the euclidian geometry fails. The structures of nonlinear dynamics associated with chaos are fractal. Fractals may also be used as the geometry of social systems. Wavelets are introduced as a tool for fractal analysis. As an example of its application on a social system, we use wavelet fractal analysis to compare electrical power demand of two different places, a touristic city and a whole country.

We exhibit the robustness of the control against both dynamical noise and measurement noise.A possible way of controlling experimentally a leaky tap using magnetic-field-produced variations in the viscosity of a magnetorheological fluid is suggested.

Algorithmic Complexity in Noise Induced Transport Systems

Time correlated fluctuations interacting with a spatial asymmetry potential are sufficient conditions to give rise to transport of Brownian particles. The transfer of information coming from the nonequilibrium bath, viewed as a source of negentropy, give rise to the correlated noise. The algorithmic complexity of an object provides a means of quantitating its information contents. The Kolmogorov information entropy or algorithmic complexity is investigated in order to quantitate the transfer of information that occurs in computational models showing noise induced transport. The complexity is measured in terms of the average number of bits per time unit necessary to specify the sequence generated by the system.

Wavelet Based Fractal Analysis of Airborne Pollen

The most abundant biological particles in the atmosphere are pollen grains and spores. Self protection of pollen allergy is possible through the information of future pollen contents in the air. In spite of the importance of airborne pol len concentration forecasting, it has not been possible to predict the pollen concentrations with great accuracy, and about 25% of the daily pollen forecasts have resulted in failures. Previous analysis of the dynamic characteristics of atmospheric pollen time series indicate that the system can be described by a low dimensional chaotic map. We apply the wavelet transform to study the multifractal characteristics of an a irborne pollen time series. We find the persistence behaviour associated to low pollen concentration values and to the most rare events of highest pollen co ncentration values. The information and the correlation dimensions correspond to a chaotic system showing loss of information with time evolution.
