Analysis of dilepton production in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV within the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach

We address dilepton production in Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV by employing the parton-hadron-string dynamics (PHSD) off-shell transport approach. Within the PHSD one goes beyond the quasiparticle approximation by solving generalized transport equations on the basis of the off-shell Kadanoff-Baym equations for the Green's functions in the phase-space representation. The approach consistently describes the full evolution of a relativistic heavy-ion collision from the initial hard scatterings and string formation through the dynamical deconfinement phase transition to the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) as well as hadronization and to the subsequent interactions in the hadronic phase. {With partons described in the PHSD by the dynamical quasiparticle model (DQPM) - matched to reproduce lattice QCD results in thermodynamic equilibrium} - we calculate, in particular, the dilepton radiation from partonic interactions through the reactions q+qbar->gamma^*, q+qbar->gamma^*+g and q+g->gamma^*+q (qbar+g->gamma^*+qbar) in the early stage of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. By comparing our results to the data from the PHENIX Collaboration, we study the relative importance of different dilepton production mechanisms and point out the regions in phase space where partonic channels are dominant. Furthermore, explicit predictions are presented for dileptons within the acceptance of the STAR detector system and compared to the preliminary data.

Particle acceleration and the origin of gamma-ray emission from Fermi Bubbles

Fermi LAT has discovered two extended gamma-ray bubbles above and below the galactic plane. We propose that their origin is due to the energy release in the Galactic center (GC) as a result of quasi-periodic star accretion onto the central black hole. Shocks generated by these processes propagate into the Galactic halo and accelerate particles there. We show that electrons accelerated up to ~10 TeV may be responsible for the observed gamma-ray emission of the bubbles as a result of inverse Compton (IC) scattering on the relic photons. We also suggest that the Bubble could generate the flux of CR protons at energies > 10^15 eV because the shocks in the Bubble have much larger length scales and longer lifetimes in comparison with those in SNRs. This may explain the the CR spectrum above the knee.

Dilepton production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at top SPS energy within the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach

Dilepton production in In+In collisions at 158 AGeV is studied within the microscopic parton-hadron-string dynamics (PHSD) transport approach that incorporates explicit partonic degrees-of-freedom, dynamical hadronization as well as the more familiar hadronic dynamics in the final reaction stages. A comparison to the data of the NA60 Collaboration shows that the measured dilepton yield is well described by including the collisional broadening of vector mesons, while simultaneously accounting for the electromagnetic radiation of the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) via off-shell quark-antiquark annihilation, quark annihilation with additional gluon Bremsstrahlung and the gluon-Compton scattering mechanisms. In particular, the spectra in the intermediate mass range (1 GeV < M < 2.5 GeV) are dominated by quark-antiquark annihilation in the nonperturbative QGP. Also, the observed softening of the transverse mass spectra at intermediate masses (1 GeV < M < 2.5 GeV) is approximately reproduced. Furthermore, for dileptons of low masses (M < 0.6 GeV), we find a sizable contribution from the quark annihilation with additional gluon bremsstrahlung, thus providing another possible window for probing the properties of the sQGP.

Nuclear Interaction Gamma-Ray Lines from the Galactic Center Region

Aims. The accretion of stars onto the central supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way is predicted to generate large fluxes of subrelativistic ions in the Galactic center region. We analyze the intensity, shape and spatial distribution of de-excitation gamma-ray lines produced by nuclear interactions of these energetic particles with the ambient medium. Methods. We first estimate the amount and mean kinetic energy of particles released from the central black hole during star disruption. We then calculate from a kinetic equation the energy and spatial distributions of these particles in the Galactic center region. These particle distributions are then used to derive the characteristics of the main nuclear interaction gamma-ray lines. Results. Because the time period of star capture by the supermassive black hole is expected to be shorter than the lifetime of the ejected fast particles against Coulomb losses, the gamma-ray emission is predicted to be stationary. We find that the nuclear de-excitation lines should be emitted from a region of maximum 5$^\circ$ angular radius. The total gamma-ray line flux below 8 MeV is calculated to be $\approx10^{-4}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. The most promising lines for detection are those at 4.44 and $\sim$6.2 MeV, with a predicted flux in each line of $\approx$$10^{-5}$ photons cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Unfortunately, it is unlikely that this emission can be detected with the INTEGRAL observatory. But the predicted line intensities appear to be within reach of future gamma-ray space instruments. A future detection of de-excitation gamma-ray lines from the Galactic center region would provide unique information on the high-energy processes induced by the central supermassive black hole and the physical conditions of the emitting region.

Necessity of Dark Matter in Modified Newtonian Dynamics within Galactic Scales? - Testing the Covariant MOND in Elliptical Lenses

Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) and its relativistic version - TeVeS offer us an alternative perspective to understand the universe without the demand of the elusive cold dark matter. This MONDian paradigm is not only competitive with the conventional CDM in a large range of scales, but also even more successful in the galactic scale. Recently, by studying 6 lensing systems, Ferreras et al. (2008) claimed that MOND still needs dark matter even in galactic scales. When we study the same systems, however, we yield an opposite conclusion. In this contribution, we report our result and conclude that MOND does not need dark matter in galactic lensing systems. Furthermore, we extend our study to 22 SLACS (Sloan Lens ACS Survey) lenses, and obtain the same conclusion as well, i.e., no dark matter is needed in elliptical galaxies.

Galactic Parameters from Whole Sky 2MASS Star Count

The whole sky differential star counts (DSC) with 1 degree resolution are retrieved from 2MASS online data service. Galaxy with double exponential thin and thick disks and a single power law luminosity function (LF) is used to interpret the 2MASS data. The slope of the DSC appears roughly isotropic over the whole sky, the average value is ~0.32, which corresponds to a power law index ~1.8 of the LF. We find that the scale-length and scale-height the thin disk are ~3.0 kpc and ~245 pc, and those of the thick disk are ~3.0 kpc and ~780 pc. The ratio of the thick disk to the thin disk is ~7%. The location of Sun above the disk is ~15 pc. A comparison of the data and model and their discrepancy are also provided.

Studying Diquark Structure of Heavy Baryons in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We propose the enhancement of $Λ_c$ yield in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC as a novel signal for the existence of diquarks in the strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma produced in these collisions as well as in the $Λ_c$. Assuming that stable bound diquarks can exist in the quark-gluon plasma, we argue that the yield of $Λ_c$ would be increased by two-body collisions between $ud$ diquarks and $c$ quarks, in addition to normal three-body collisions among $u$, $d$ and $c$ quarks. A quantitative study of this effect based on the coalescence model shows that including the contribution of diquarks to $Λ_c$ production indeed leads to a substantial enhancement of the $Λ_c/D$ ratio in heavy ion collisions.

Thermal Dileptons at LHC

We predict dilepton invariant-mass spectra for central 5.5 ATeV Pb-Pb collisions at LHC. Hadronic emission in the low-mass region is calculated using in-medium spectral functions of light vector mesons within hadronic many-body theory. In the intermediate-mass region thermal radiation from the Quark-Gluon Plasma, evaluated perturbatively with hard-thermal loop corrections, takes over. An important source over the entire mass range are decays of correlated open-charm hadrons, rendering the nuclear modification of charm and bottom spectra a critical ingredient.

$D_{sJ}$(2317) meson production at RHIC

Production of $D_{sJ}$(2317) mesons in relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC is studied. Using the quark coalescence model, we first determine the initial number of $D_{sJ}$(2317) mesons produced during hadronization of created quark-gluon plasma. The predicted $D_{sJ}$(2317) abundance depends sensitively on the quark structure of the $D_{sJ}$(2317) meson. An order-of-magnitude larger yield is obtained for a conventional two-quark than for an exotic four-quark $D_{sJ}$(2317) meson. To include the hadronic effect on the $D_{sJ}$(2317) meson yield, we have evaluated the absorption cross sections of the $D_{sJ}$(2317) meson by pion, rho, anti-kaon, and vector anti-kaon in a phenomenological hadronic model. Taking into consideration the absorption and production of $D_{sJ}$(2317) mesons during the hadronic stage of heavy ion collisions via a kinetic model, we find that the final yield of $D_{sJ}$(2317) mesons remains sensitive to its initial number produced from the quark-gluon plasma, providing thus the possibility of studying the quark structure of the $D_{sJ}$(2317) meson and its production mechanism in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

J/psi absorption by nucleons in the meson-exchange model

We reinvestigate the $J/ψ$ dissociation processes induced by the reactions with nucleons, $J/ψ+ N \to \bar{D}^{(*)} + Λ_c$, in the meson-exchange model. Main constraints used in this work are vector-meson dominance and charm vector-current conservation. We show that the cross section for $J/ψ+ N \to \bar{D} + Λ_c$ can be larger than that for $J/ψ+ N \to \bar{D}^{*} + Λ_c$ when these constraints are imposed. The dependence of the cross sections on the coupling constants is analyzed in detail, and the comparison with the recent quark-interchange model predictions is also made.

Jet conversions in a quark-gluon plasma

Quark and gluon jets traversing through a quark-gluon plasma not only lose their energies but also can undergo flavor conversions. The conversion rates via the elastic $q(\bar q)g\to gq(\bar q)$ and the inelastic $q\bar q\leftrightarrow gg$ scatterings are evaluated in the lowest order in QCD. Including both jet energy loss and conversions in the expanding quark-gluon plasma produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions, we have found a net conversion of quark to gluon jets. This reduces the difference between the nuclear modification factors for quark and gluon jets in central heavy ion collisions and thus enhances the $p/π^+$ and ${\bar p}/π^-$ ratios at high transverse momentum. However, a much larger net quark to gluon jet conversion rate than the one given by the lowest-order QCD is needed to account for the observed similar ratios in central Au+Au and p+p collisions at same energy. Implications of our results are discussed.

In-situ acceleration of subrelativistic electrons in the Coma halo and the halo's influence on the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect

The stochastic acceleration of subrelativistic electrons from a background plasma is studied in order to find a possible explanation of the hard X-ray (HXR) emission detected from the Coma cluster. We calculate the necessary energy supply as a function of the plasma temperature and of the electron energy. We show that, for the same value of the HXR flux, the energy supply changes gradually from its high value (when emitting particle are non-thermal) to lower values (when the electrons are thermal). The kinetic equations we use include terms describing particle thermalization as well as momentum diffusion due to the Fermi II acceleration. We show that the temporal evolution of the particle distribution function has, at its final stationary stage, a rather specific form: it cannot be described by simple exponential or power-law expressions. A broad transfer region is formed by Coulomb collisions at energies between the Maxwellian and power-law parts of the distribution function. In this region the radiative lifetime of a single electron differs greatly from the lifetime of the distribution function as a whole. For a plasma temperature of 8 keV, the particles emitting bremsstrahlung at 20-80 keV lie in this quasi-thermal regime. We show that the energy supply required by quasi-thermal electrons to produce the observed HXR flux from Coma is one or two orders of magnitude smaller than the value derived from the assumption of a nonthermal origin of the emitting particles. This result may solve the problem of rapid cluster overheating by nonthermal electrons. We finally predict the change in Coma's SZ effect caused by the distortions of the Maxwellian electron spectrum, and we show that evidence for acceleration of subrelativistic electrons can be derived from detailed spectral measurements.

Effect of three-body elastic scattering on heavy quark momentum degradation in the quark-gluon plasma

Heavy quark drag coefficients in the quark-gluon plasma are evaluated in the perturbative QCD. It is found that for charm quarks the contribution from three-body elastic scattering is comparable to those from two-body elastic and radiative scatterings while for bottom quarks it becomes dominant. Using a schematic expanding fireball model, effects of both two-body and three-body scatterings on the transverse momentum spectra of heavy quarks produced in Au+Au collisions at center of mass energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV are studied. Results on electrons from resulting heavy meson decays are compared with available experimental data.

Eta absorption by mesons

Using the $[SU(3)_{\mathrm{L}} \times SU(3)_{\mathrm{R}}]_{\mathrm{global}% }\times [SU(3)_V]_{\mathrm{local}}$ chiral Lagrangian with hidden local symmetry, we evaluate the cross sections for the absorption of eta meson ($% η$) by pion ($π$), rho ($ρ$), omega ($ω$), kaon ($K$), and kaon star ($K^*$) in the tree-level approximation. With empirical masses and coupling constants as well as reasonable values for the cutoff parameter in the form factors at interaction vertices, we find that most cross sections are less than 1 mb, except the reactions $ρη\to K\bar K^*(\bar KK^*)$, $ωη\to K\bar K^*(\bar KK^*)$, $K^*η\toρK$, and $K^*η\toωK$, which are a few mb, and the reactions $πη\to K\bar K$ and $Kη\toπK$, which are more than 10 mb. Including these reactions in a kinetic model based on a schematic hydrodynamic description of relativistic heavy ion collisions, we find that the abundance of eta mesons likely reaches chemical equilibrium with other hadrons in nuclear collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

Effect of space-momentum correlations on the constituent quark number scaling of hadron elliptic flows

Using models ranging from schematic one with a simple quark distribution to more realistic blast wave, we study the elliptic flow of hadrons produced from coalescence of quarks and antiquarks in the quark-gluon plasma that is formed in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. In particular, we study effects due to azimuthal anisotropy in the local transverse momentum distribution of quarks, as generated by their position-momentum correlations as a result of radial flow and/or jet quenching. We find that even if quarks have large local non-elliptic anisotropic flow, the elliptic flow of produced hadrons can still scale with their constituent quark numbers. This scaling is, however, broken if the radial flow of coalescing quarks is anisotropic and/or if the momentum dispersion of quarks inside hadrons is included.

Effect of isovector-scalar meson on neutron star matter in strong magnetic fields

We study the effects of isovector-scalar meson $δ$ on the equation of state (EOS) of neutron star matter in strong magnetic fields. The EOS of neutron-star matter and nucleon effective masses are calculated in the framework of Lagrangian field theory, which is solved within the mean-field approximation. From the numerical results one can find that the $δ$-field leads to a remarkable splitting of proton and neutron effective masses. The strength of $δ$-field decreases with the increasing of the magnetic field and is little at ultrastrong field. The proton effective mass is highly influenced by magnetic fields, while the effect of magnetic fields on the neutron effective mass is negligible. The EOS turns out to be stiffer at $B < 10^{15}$G but becomes softer at stronger magnetic field after including the $δ$-field. The AMM terms can affect the system merely at ultrastrong magnetic field($B > 10^{19}$G). In the range of $10^{15}$ G -- $10^{18}$ G the properties of neutron-star matter are found to be similar with those without magnetic fields.

Hadron production from quark coalescence and jet fragmentation in intermediate energy collisions at RHIC

Transverse momentum spectra of pions, protons and antiprotons in Au+Au collisions at intermediate RHIC energy of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=62$ GeV are studied in a model that includes both quark coalescence from the dense partonic matter and fragmentation of the quenched perturbative minijet partons. The resulting baryon to meson ratio at intermediate transverse momenta is predicted to be larger than that seen in experiments at higher center of mass energies.
