D+ -> K- pi+ pi+ : heavy meson decays and final state interactions

We show that final state interactions are important in shaping Dalitz plots for the decay $D^+ \rar K^- \p^+ \p^+$. The theoretical treatment of this reaction requires a blend of several weak and hadronic processes and hence it is necessarily involved. In this talk we present results from a calculation which is still in progress, but has already unveiled the role of important dynamical mechanisms. We do not consider explicit quark degrees of freedom and our study is performed within an effective hadronic framework. In spite of the relatively wide window of energies available in the Dalitz plot for the $D^+$ decay, we depart from $SU(3)\times SU(3)$ chiral perturbation theory and extend its range by means of unitarization. Our present results, which concentrate on the vector weak vertex, describe qualitative features of the modulus of the decay amplitude and agrees well with its phase in the elastic region.

Towards three-body unitarity in $D^+ \to K^- π^+ π^+$

We assess the importance of final state interactions in $D^+ \rar K^- \p^+ \p^+$, stressing the consistency between two- and three-body interactions. The basic building block in the calculation is a $Kπ$ amplitude based on unitarized chiral perturbation theory and with parameters determined by a fit to elastic LASS data. Its analytic extension to the second sheet allows the determination of two poles, associated with the $\k$ and the $K^*(1430)$, and a representation of the amplitude based on them is constructed. The problem of unitarity in the three-body system is formulated in terms of an integral equation, inspired in the Faddeev formalism, which implements a convolution between the weak vertex and the final state hadronic interaction. Three different topologies are considered for the former and, subsequently, the decay amplitude is expressed as a perturbation series. Each term in this series is systematically related to the previous one and a re-summation was performed. Remaining effects owing to single and double rescattering processes were then added and results compared to FOCUS data. We found that proper three-body effects are important at threshold and fade away rapidly at higher energies. Our model, based on a vector weak vertex, can describe qualitative features of the modulus of the decay amplitude and agrees well with its phase in the elastic region.

The Time-Reversal- and Parity-Violating Nuclear Potential in Chiral Effective Theory

We derive the parity- and time-reversal-violating nuclear interactions stemming from the QCD theta term and quark/gluon operators of effective dimension 6: quark electric dipole moments, quark and gluon chromo-electric dipole moments, and two four-quark operators. We work in the framework of two-flavor chiral perturbation theory, where a systematic expansion is possible. The different chiral-transformation properties of the sources of time-reversal violation lead to different hadronic interactions. For all sources considered the leading-order potential involves known one-pion exchange, but its specific form and the relative importance of short-range interactions depend on the source. For the theta term, the leading potential is solely given by one-pion exchange, which does not contribute to the deuteron electric dipole moment. In subleading order, a new two-pion-exchange potential is obtained. Its short-range component is indistinguishable from one of two undetermined contact interactions that appear at the same order and represent effects of heavier mesons and other short-range QCD dynamics. One-pion-exchange corrections at this order are discussed as well.

The Electric Dipole Form Factor of the Nucleon in Chiral Perturbation Theory to Sub-leading Order

The electric dipole form factor (EDFF) of the nucleon stemming from the QCD theta term and from the quark color-electric dipole moments is calculated in chiral perturbation theory to sub-leading order. This is the lowest order in which the isoscalar EDFF receives a calculable, non-analytic contribution from the pion cloud. In the case of the theta term, the expected lower bound on the deuteron electric dipole moment is |d_d| > 1.4 10^(-4) θe fm. The momentum dependence of the isovector EDFF is proportional to a non-derivative time-reversal-violating pion-nucleon coupling, and the scale for momentum variation ---appearing, in particular, in the radius of the form factor--- is the pion mass.

Radiative Mechanism to Light Fermion Masses in the MSSM

In a previous work we have showed that the ${\cal Z}_{2}^{\prime}$ Symmetry, imply that the light fermions, the electron and the quarks, $u,d$ and $s$, get their masses only at one loop level. Here, we considere the more general hypothesis for flavour mixing in the sfermion sector in the MSSM. Then, we present our results to the masses of these light fermions and as a final result we can explain why the $s$ quark is heavier than the $u,d$ quarks. This mechanism is in agrement with the experimental constraint on the sfermion's masses values.

Masses of Fermions in Supersymmetric Models

We consider the mass generation for the usual quarks and leptons in some supersymmetric models. The masses of the top, the bottom, the charm, the tau and the muon are given at the tree level. All the other quarks and the electron get their masses at the one loop level in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and in two Supersymmetric Left-Right Models, one model uses triplets (SUSYLRT) to break $SU(2)_{R}$-symmetry and the other use doublets(SUSYLRD).

Nuclear Parity-Violation in Effective Field Theory

We reformulate the analysis of nuclear parity-violation (PV) within the framework of effective field theory (EFT). To order Q, the PV nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction depends on five a priori unknown constants that parameterize the leading-order, short-range four-nucleon operators. When pions are included as explicit degrees of freedom, the potential contains additional medium- and long-range components parameterized by PV piNN couplings. We derive the form of the corresponding one- and two-pion-exchange potentials. We apply these considerations to a set of existing and prospective PV few-body measurements that may be used to determine the five independent low-energy constants relevant to the pionless EFT and the additional constants associated with dynamical pions. We also discuss the relationship between the conventional meson-exchange framework and the EFT formulation, and argue that the latter provides a more general and systematic basis for analyzing nuclear PV.

Parity Violating Photoproduction of $π^\pm$ on the $Δ$ Resonance

We analyze the real photon asymmetry $A^\pm_γ$ for the parity violating (PV) $π^\pm$ production on the $Δ$ resonance via the reactions ${\vec γ} + p \to Δ^+ \to π^+ + n$ and ${\vec γ} + d \to Δ^0 + p \to π^- + p + p$. This asymmetry is nonvanishing due to a PV $γN Δ$ coupling constant, $d^\pm_Δ$. We argue that an experimental determination of this coupling would be of interest for hadron dynamics, possibly shedding light on the S-wave/P-wave puzzle in the hyperon nonleptonic decays and the violation of Hara's theorem in weak radiative hyperon decays.

Electroweak Radiative Corrections to Parity-Violating Electroexcitation of the $Δ$

We analyze the degree to which parity-violating (PV) electroexcitation of the $Δ(1232)$ resonance may be used to extract the weak neutral axial vector transition form factors. We find that the axial vector electroweak radiative corrections are large and theoretically uncertain, thereby modifying the nominal interpretation of the PV asymmetry in terms of the weak neutral form factors. We also show that, in contrast to the situation for elastic electron scattering, the axial $N\toΔ$ PV asymmetry does not vanish at the photon point as a consequence of a new term entering the radiative corrections. We argue that an experimental determination of these radiative corrections would be of interest for hadron structure theory, possibly shedding light on the violation of Hara's theorem in weak, radiative hyperon decays.

The Nucleon Anapole Form Factor in Chiral Perturbation Theory to Sub-leading Order

The anapole form factor of the nucleon is calculated in chiral perturbation theory to sub-leading order. This is the lowest order in which the isovector anapole form factor does not vanish. The anapole moment depends on counterterms that reflect short-range dynamics, but the momentum dependence or the form factor is determined by pion loops in terms of parameters that could in principle be fixed from other processes. If these parameters are assumed to have natural size, the sub-leading corrections do not exceed ~ 30% at momentum Q ~ 300 MeV.

The anapole form factor of the nucleon

The anapole form factor of the nucleon is calculated in chiral perturbation theory in leading order. To this order, the form factor originates from the pion cloud, and is proportional to the non-derivative parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling. The momentum dependence of the form factor - and in particular, its radius - is completely determined by the pion mass.

Nucleon-nucleon interaction: Central potential and pion production

We show that the tail of the chiral two-pion exchange nucleon-nucleon potential is proportional to the $πN$ scalar form factor and discuss how it can be translated into effective scalar meson interactions. We then construct a kernel for the process $NN\toπNN$, due to the exchange of two pions, which may be used in either three body forces or pion production in NN scattering. Our final expression involves a partial cancellation among three terms, due to chiral symmetry, but the net result is still important. We also find that, at large internucleon distances, the kernel has the same spatial dependence as the central NN potential and we produce expressions relating these processes directly.

Sigma-fields x Chiral Scalars in Nuclear Three Body Potentials

The scalar-isoscalar field of an effective chiral Lagrangian transforms differently in either linear or non-linear frameworks: in the former case it is the counterpart of the pion whereas in the latter it is chiral invariant on its own. We compare the predictions from these two models for nucleon interactions and find results which are identical for two-body and rather different for three-body potentials. Some qualitative features of three-body interactions are discussed.

Chiral Symmetry: Pion-Nucleon Interactions in Constituent Quark Models

We study the interactions of an elementary pion with a nucleon made of constituent quarks and show that the enforcement of chiral symmetry requires the use of a two-body operator, whose form does not depend on the choice of the pion-quark coupling. The coordinate space NN effective potential in the pion exchange channel is given as a sum of terms involving two gradients, that operate on both the usual Yukawa function and the confining potential. We also consider an application to the case of quarks bound by a harmonic potential and show that corrections due to the symmetry are important.
