J-PAS: forecasts on dark energy and modified gravity theories

The next generation of galaxy surveys will allow us to test one of the most fundamental assumptions of the standard cosmology, i.e., that gravity is governed by the general theory of relativity (GR). In this paper we investigate the ability of the Javalambre Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) to constrain GR and its extensions. Based on the J-PAS information on clustering and gravitational lensing, we perform a Fisher matrix forecast on the effective Newton constant, $μ$, and the gravitational slip parameter, $η$, whose deviations from unity would indicate a breakdown of GR. Similar analysis is also performed for the DESI and Euclid surveys and compared to J-PAS with two configurations providing different areas, namely an initial expectation with 4000 $\mathrm{deg}^2$ and the future best case scenario with 8500 $\mathrm{deg}^2$. We show that J-PAS will be able to measure the parameters $μ$ and $η$ at a sensitivity of $2\% - 7\%$, and will provide the best constraints in the interval $z = 0.3 - 0.6$, thanks to the large number of ELGs detectable in that redshift range. We also discuss the constraining power of J-PAS for dark energy models with a time-dependent equation-of-state parameter of the type $w(a)=w_0+w_a(1-a)$, obtaining $Δw_0=0.058$ and $Δw_a=0.24$ for the absolute errors of the dark energy parameters.

J-PAS: forecasts on interacting dark energy from baryon acoustic oscillations and redshift-space distortions

We estimate the constraining power of J-PAS for parameters of an interacting dark energy cosmology. The survey is expected to map several millions of luminous red galaxies, emission line galaxies and quasars in an area of thousands of square degrees in the northern sky with precise photometric redshift measurements. Forecasts for the DESI and Euclid surveys are also evaluated and compared to J-PAS. With the Fisher matrix approach, we find that J-PAS can place constraints on the interaction parameter comparable to those from DESI, with an absolute uncertainty of about $0.02$, when the interaction term is proportional to the dark matter energy density, and almost as good, of about $0.01$, when the interaction is proportional to the dark energy density. For the equation of state of dark energy, the constraints from J-PAS are slightly better in the two cases (uncertainties $0.04$ - $0.05$ against $0.05$ - $0.07$ around the fiducial value $-1$). Both surveys stay behind Euclid but follow it closely, imposing comparable constraints in all specific cases considered.

Systems engineering applied to ELT instrumentation: The GMACS case

An important tool for the development of the next generation of extremely large telescopes (ELTs) is a robust Systems Engineering (SE) methodology. GMACS is a first-generation multi-object spectrograph that will work at visible wavelengths on the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). In this paper, we discuss the application of SE to the design of next-generation instruments for ground-based astronomy and present the ongoing development of SE products for the GMACS spectrograph, currently in its Conceptual Design phase. SE provides the means to assist in the management of complex projects, and in the case of GMACS, to ensure its operational success, maximizing the scientific potential of GMT.

UV and FUV spectroscopy of the hybrid PG 1159-type central star NGC 7094

Previous studies aiming at the iron-abundance determination in three PG 1159 stars (K 1-16, PG 1159-035, NGC 7094) and a [WC]-PG 1159 transition star (Abell 78) have revealed that no object shows any iron line in the UV spectrum. The stars are iron-deficient by at least 1 dex, typically. A possible explanation is that iron nuclei were transformed by neutron captures into heavier elements (s-process), however, the extent of the iron-destruction would be much stronger than predicted by AGB star models. But if n-captures are the right explanation, then we should observe an enrichment of trans-iron elements. In this paper we report on our search for a possible nickel overabundance in one of the four Fe deficient PG 1159 stars, namely the central star NGC 7094. We are unable to identify any nickel line in HST and FUSE spectra and conclude that Ni is not overabundant. It is conceivable that iron was transformed into even heavier elements, but their identification suffers from the lack of atomic data.

High-resolution FUSE and HST ultraviolet spectroscopy of the white dwarf central star of Sh 2-216

LS V +4621 is the DAO-type central star of the planetary nebula Sh 2-216. We perform a comprehensive spectral analysis of high-resolution, high-S/N ultraviolet observations obtained with FUSE and STIS aboard the HST as well as the optical spectrum of LS V +4621 by means of state-of-the-art NLTE model-atmosphere techniques in order to compare its photospheric properties to theoretical predictions from stellar evolution theory as well as from diffusion calculations. From the N IV - NV, O IV - O VI, Si IV - Si V, and Fe V - Fe VII ionization equilibria, we determined an effective temperature of 95 +/- 2 kK with high precision. The surface gravity is log g = 6.9 +/- 0.2. An unexplained discrepancy appears between the spectroscopic distance d = 224 +46/-58 pc and the parallax distance d = 129 +6/-5 pc of LS V +4621. For the first time, we have identified Mg IV and Ar VI absorption lines in the spectrum of a hydrogen-rich central star and determined the Mg and Ar abundances as well as the individual abundances of iron-group elements (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni). With the realistic treatment of metal opacities up to the iron group in the model-atmosphere calculations, the so-called Balmer-line problem (found in models that neglect metal-line blanketing) vanishes. Spectral analysis by means of NLTE model atmospheres has presently arrived at a high level of sophistication, which is now hampered largely by the lack of reliable atomic data and accurate line-broadening tables. Strong efforts should be made to improve upon this situation.

Variations in D/H and D/O from New FUSE Observations

We use data obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) to determine the interstellar abundances of DI, NI, OI, FeII, and H2 along the sigh tlines to WD1034+001, BD+393226, and TD132709. Our main focus is on determining the D/H, N/H, O/H, and D/O ratios along these sightlines, with log N(H) > 20.0, that probe gas well outside of the Local Bubble. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) archival data are used to determine the HI column densities along the WD1034+001 and TD132709 sightlines, respectively. For BD+393226, a previously published N(HI) is used. We find (D/H)x10^5 = 2.14 + 0.53 - 0.45, 1.17 + 0.31 - 0.25, and 1.86 + 0.53 - 0.43, and (D/O)x10^2 = 6.31 + 1.79 - 1.38, 5.62 + 1.61 - 1.31, and 7.59 + 2.17 - 1.76, for the WD1034+001, BD+393226, and TD132709 sightlines, respectively (all 1 si gma). The scatter in these three D/H ratios exemplifies the scatter that has been found by other authors for sightlines with column densities in the range 19.2 < log N(H) < 20.7. The D/H ratio toward WD1034+001 and all the D/O ratios derived here are inconsistent with the Local Bubble value and are some of the highest in the literature. We discuss the implications of our measurements for the determination of the present-epoch abundance of deuterium, and for the different scenarios that try to explain the D/H variations. We present a study of D/H as a function of the average sightline gas density, using the ratios derived in this work as well as ratios from the literature, which suggests that D/H decreases with increasing gas volume density. Similar behaviors by other elements such Fe and Si have been interpreted as the result of depletion into dust grains.

Oxygen Gas Phase Abundance Revisited

We present new measurements of the interstellar gas-phase oxygen abundance along the sight lines towards 19 early-type galactic stars at an average distance of 2.6 kpc. We derive O {\small I} column densities from {\it HST}/STIS observations of the weak 1355 Åintersystem transition. We derive total hydrogen column densities [N(H {\small I})+2N(H$_2$)] using {\it HST}/STIS observations of \lya and {\it FUSE} observations of molecular hydrogen. The molecular hydrogen content of these sight lines ranges from f(H$_2$) = 2N(H$_2$)/[N(H {\small I})+2N(H$_2$)] = 0.03 to 0.47. The average $ $ of 6.3$\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ mag$^{-1}$ with a standard deviation of 15% is consistent with previous surveys. The mean oxygen abundance along these sight lines, which probe a wide range of galactic environments in the distant ISM, is 10$^6$ \oh = $408 \pm 13$ (1 $σ$ in the mean). %$({\rm O/H})_{gas} = 408 \pm 14$(1 $σ$). We see no evidence for decreasing gas-phase oxygen abundance with increasing molecular hydrogen fraction and the relative constancy of \oh suggests that the component of dust containing the oxygen is not readily destroyed. We estimate that, if 60% of the dust grains are resilient against destruction by shocks, the distant interstellar total oxygen abundance can be reconciliated with the solar value derived from the most recent measurements %by Holweger and by Allende Prieto, Lambert & Asplund: of 10$^6$ \oh$_\odot$ = 517 $\pm$ 58 (1 $σ$). We note that the smaller oxygen abundances derived for the interstellar gas within 500 pc %by Meyer, Cardelli & Jura or from nearby B star surveys are consistent with a local elemental deficit.
