Weak Ferromagnetism Accompanying Loop current order in Underdoped Cuprates

We discuss the necessary symmetry conditions and the different ways in which they can be physically realized for the occurrence of ferromagnetism accompanying the loop current orbital magnetic order observed by polarized neutron-diffraction experiments or indeed any other conceivable principal order in the under-doped phase of cuprates. We contrast the Kerr effect experiments in single crystals observing ferromagnetism with the direct magnetization measurements in large powder samples, which do not observe it. We also suggest experiments to resolve the differences among the experiments, all of which we believe to be correct.

Magneto-oscillations in Underdoped Cuprates

The conventional interpretation of the recent magneto-oscillation experiments in underdoped Cuprates, requires that there be a state of altered translational symmetry in the pseudogap state which is not supported by structural and Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments. I show here that the observed oscillations may be reconciled with the conclusion arrived in ARPES experiments that the fermi-surface, suitably defined, has the shape of four arcs which shrink to four points as $T \to 0$. Experiments, including infrared absorption in a magnetic field, are suggested to distinguish between such a state from that obtained by the conventional interpretation of the magneto-oscillations.

Screening of point charge impurities in highly anisotropic metals: application to $μ^+$ spin relaxation in underdoped cuprates

We calculate the screening charge density distribution due to a point charge, such as that of a positive muon ($μ^+$), placed between the planes of a highly anisotropic layered metal. In underdoped hole cuprates the screening charge converts the charge density in the metallic-plane unit cells in the vicinity of the $μ^+$ to nearly its value in the insulating state. The current-loop ordered state observed by polarized neutron diffraction then vanishes in such cells, and also in nearby cells over a distance of order the intrinsic correlation length of the loop-ordered state. This in turn strongly suppresses the loop-current field at the $μ^+$ site. We estimate this suppressed field in underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, and find consistency with the observed 0.2--0.3 G field in the former case and the observed upper bound of $\sim$0.2 G in the latter case. This resolves the controversy between the neutron diffraction and $μ$SR experiments. The screening calculation also has relevance for the effect of other charge impurities in the cuprates, such as the dopants themselves.

Universality of the single-particle spectra of cuprate superconductors

All the available data for the dispersion and linewidth of the single-particle spectra above the superconducting gap and the pseudogap in metallic cuprates for any doping has universal features. The linewidth is linear in energy below a scale $ω_c$ and constant above. The cusp in the linewidth at $ω_c$ mandates, due to causality, a "waterfall", i.e., a vertical feature in the dispersion. These features are predicted by a recent microscopic theory. We find that all data can be quantitatively fitted by the theory with a coupling constant $λ_0$ and an upper cutoff at $ω_c$ which vary by less than 50% among the different cuprates and for varying dopings. The microscopic theory also gives these values to within factors of O(2).

Topological Transition in the Fermi Surface of Cuprate Superconductors in the Pseudogap Regime

The angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies on cuprates in the pseudogap region reveal an extraordinary topological transition in which the ground state changes from one with a normal Fermi surface to one with four Fermi points. Such a state is not possible without some symmetry breaking, which allows interference between one-particle basis states that is normally forbidden. We also show that the experimental results are quantitatively given without any free parameters by a theory and discuss the implications of the results.

Coherence in the Two Kondo Impurity Problem

We show through a perturbative and an exact calculation using Wilson's renormalization methods that in the problem of two interacting Kondo impurities, on-site potential scattering generates a quantum-tunneling between the two impurities through a marginally relevant operator. The magnitude of this tunneling $V_{12}$ depends on the spin-correlation between the two impurities. For exchange interactions between the moments comparable to the Kondo energy $T_K$, $V_{12}$ is typically much larger than $T_K$. This implies that the heavy-fermion mass in this interesting range is determined by $V_{12}$ rather than $T_K$. The importance of these results for experiments in coupled Kondo dots is also pointed out.

Theory of the Quantum Critical Fluctuations in Cuprates

The statistical mechanics of the time-reversal and inversion symmetry breaking order parameter, possibly observed in the pseudogap region of the phase diagram of the Cuprates, can be represented by the Ashkin-Teller model. We add kinetic energy and dissipation to the model for a quantum generalization and show that the correlations are determined by two sets of charges, one interacting locally in time and logarithmically in space and the other locally in space and logarithmically in time. The quantum critical fluctuations are derived and shown to be of the form postulated in 1989 to give the marginal fermi-liquid properties. The model solved and the methods devised are likely to be of interest also to other quantum phase transitions.

Josephson effect for superconductors lacking center of inversion

Due to the absence of a center of inversion in some superconducting compounds, a p-wave admixture to the dominant d-wave order parameter must exist. If time-reversal is also violated, an allowed invariant is the product of the d-wave, p-wave and an appropriately directed current. We show that this leads to an anomalous Josephson current for tunneling along the direction parallel to the axis of the p-wave component, where the current is the Meissner current and the Josephson loop current along the surface of the tunnel barrier. These ideas are applied to the superconducting state of the cuprates in the pseudogap region of the phase diagram where in the normal phase some experiments have detected a time-reversal and inversion symmetry broken phase. The effect is relevant also to heavy-fermion compounds which lack center of inversion due to crystalline symmetry.

Detecting Dichroism in Angle Resolved Photoemission

Recently, the time-reversal violation predicted for the pseudogap phase of the cuprates, which was observed by dichroism experiments using Angle-Resolved Photoemission has also been observed by polarized neutron diffraction. Earlier derivation of dichroism in angle resolved photoemission due to time-reversal violation relied on existence of mirror planes in the crystal. Here the theory of the effect is generalized to the case that mirror plane symmetry is weakly violated due to perturbing potentials such as a superstructure.

Helicity Order: Hidden Order Parameter in URu$_2$Si$_2$

We propose that the "hidden order parameter" in URu$_2$Si$_2$ is a helicity order which must arise, if the Pomeranchuk criteria for the spin-antisymmetric Landau parameters with respect to the stability of a Fermi liquid state are violated. In a simple model, we calculate the specific heat, linear and nonlinear magnetic susceptibilities and the change of transition temperature in a magnetic field with such an order parameter, and obtain quantitative agreement with experiments in terms of two parameters extracted from the data. The peculiar temperature dependence of the NMR linewidth and the nature of the loss of excitations in the ordered phase seen by neutron scattering are also explained and experiments are suggested to directly confirm the proposed order parameter.

Thirty Years of heavy Fermions: Scientific Setting for their Discovery and Partial Understanding

Heavy-Fermions provide an extreme example of the utility of the idea of continuity and analyticity in physics. Their discovery and study in the past thirty years has added a fascinating chapter to condensed matter physics. I briefly review the origins of the heavy-fermion problem out of the study of magnetic moments in metals and the study of mixed-valent rare-earth compounds. I also review the principal ideas underlying the features understood in their fermi-liquid phase as well as in their anisotropic superconductivity. The unsolved issues are also briefly mentioned.

A Theory of the Pseudogap State of the Cuprates

The phase diagram for a general model for Cuprates is derived in a mean-field approximation. A phase violating time-reversal without breaking translational symmetry is possible when both the ionic interactions and the local repulsions are large compared to the energy difference between the Cu and O single-particle levels. It ends at a quantum critical point as the hole or electron doping is increased. Such a phase is necessarily accompanied by singular forward scattering such that, in the stable phase, the density of states at the chemical potential, projected to a particular point group symmetry of the lattice is zero producing thereby an anisotropic gap in the single-particle spectrum. It is suggested that this phase occupies the "pseudogap" region of the phase diagram of the cuprates. The temperature dependence of the single-particle spectra, the density of states, the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility are calculated with rather remarkable correspondence with the experimental results. The importance of further direct experimental verification of such a phase in resolving the principal issues in the theory of the Cuprate phenomena is pointed out. To this end, some predictions are provided.

Deconstruction of the Kondo Effect near the AFM-Quantum Critical Point

The problem of a spin-1/2 magnetic impurity near an antiferromagnetic transition of the host lattice is solved. The problem is shown to transform to a multichannel problem. A variety of fixed points is discovered asymptotically near the AFM-critical point. Among these is a new variety of stable fixed point of a multichannel Kondo problem which does not require channel isotropy. At this point Kondo screening disappears but coupling to spin-fluctuations remains. Besides its intrinsic interest, the problem is an essential ingredient in the problem of quantum critical points in heavy-fermions.

Developments in Correlated Fermions

This manuscript is based on the Summary and Overview talk given at the "The International Conference of Strongly Correlated Electronic Systems" (SCES '04), July 26-30, at Karlsruhe, Germany. After highlighting some of the principal new experimental developments in heavy fermions presented at the conference, I turn to two kinds of theoretical questions. (1) What is understood of the fermi-liquid state of the heavy fermions and what is not, but may reasonably well be understood by systematic calculations. (2) The profound issues raised by the observed correlations near the quantum critical points in the heavy fermions. The numbers and letters in the parenthesis in the text refer to the listing of the talks in the "Program and Abstracts" book of the conference.

Some Experimental Signatures to look for Time-reversal Violating superconductors

We discuss some experimental signatures associated with the topological structures of unconventional superconductor order parameters of form $d_{x^2-y^2}+ix$, where $x=s,p_x \pm p_y$, or $d_{xy}$. Specifically, we study the topological surface states on the $(110)$ and equivalent surfaces of such superconductors which are observable in Andreev tunneling experiments, as well as evaluate the magnetic flux trapped in superconducting rings of such superconductors with multiple grain-boundary Josephson junctions. Previous experiments are examined and several new experiments suggested.

A proposal to determine the spectrum of pairing-glue in high-temperature superconductors

We propose a method for an analysis of the angle-resolved photoemission data in two-dimensional anisotropic superconductors which directly yields the spectral function of the bosons mediating Cooper pairing. The method includes a self-consistency check for the validity of the approximations made in the analysis. We explicitly describe the experimental data needed for implementing the proposed procedure.

Cure to the Landau-Pomeranchuk and Associated Long-Wavelength Fermi-surface Instabilities on Lattices

The cure to the $\ell=1$ Landau-Pomeranchuk (L-P) instabilities in translationally invariant fermions is shown to be a state with an anisotropic gap at the fermi-surface. For higher $\ell$ and for fermions on a lattice, general criteria for long wavelength instabilities and their cure are found in terms of the derivatives of the single particle self-energy with respect to momentum for spin-symmetric instabilities and with respect to magnetic field for spin-antisymmetric instabilities. The results may be relevant to identifying hidden order parameters found in many metals.
