Comparing energy loss and $p_{\perp}$-broadening in perturbative QCD with strong coupling $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM theory

We compare medium induced energy loss and $p_{\perp}$-broadening in perturbative QCD with that of the trailing string picture of SYM theory. We consider finite and infinite extent matter as well as relativistic heavy quarks which correspond to those being produced in the medium or external to it. When expressed in terms of the appropriate saturation momentum, we find identical parametric forms for energy loss in perturbative QCD and SYM theory. We find simple correspondences between $p_{\perp}$-broadening in QCD and in SYM theory although $p_{\perp}$-broadening is radiation dominated in SYM theory and multiple scattering dominated in perturbative QCD.

Nuclear diffractive structure functions at high energies

A future high-energy electron-ion collider would explore the non-linear weakly-coupled regime of QCD, and test the Color Glass Condensate (CGC) approach to high-energy scattering. Hard diffraction in deep inelastic scattering off nuclei will provide many fundamental measurements. In this work, the nuclear diffractive structure function F_{2,A}^D is predicted in the CGC framework, and the features of nuclear enhancement and suppression are discussed.

Next-to-leading BFKL phenomenology of forward-jet cross sections at HERA

We show that the forward-jet measurements performed at HERA allow for a detailed study of corrections due to next-to-leading logarithms (NLL) in the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) approach. While the description of the dσ/dx data shows small sensitivity to NLL-BFKL corrections, these can be tested by the triple differential cross section dσ/dxdk_T^2dQ^2 recently measured. These data can be successfully described using a renormalization-group improved NLL kernel while the standard next-to-leading-order QCD or leading-logarithm BFKL approaches fail to describe the same data in the whole kinematic range. We present a detailed analysis of the NLL scheme and renormalization-scale dependences and also discuss the photon impact factors.

Next-leading BFKL effects in forward-jet production at HERA

We show that next-leading logarithmic (NLL) Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) effects can be tested by the forward-jet cross sections recently measured at HERA. For dσ/dx, the NLL corrections are small which confirms the stability of the BFKL description. The triple differential cross section dσ/dxdk_T^2dQ^2 is sensitive to NLL effects and opens the way for an experimental test of the full BFKL theoretical framework at NLL accuracy.

Exclusive vector meson production at HERA from QCD with saturation

Following recent predictions that the geometric scaling properties of deep inelastic scattering data in inclusive gamma*-p collisions are expected also in exclusive diffractive processes, we investigate the diffractive production of vector mesons. Using analytic results in the framework of the BK equation at non-zero momentum transfer, we extend to the non-forward amplitude a QCD-inspired forward saturation model including charm, following the theoretical predictions for the momentum transfer dependence of the saturation scale. We obtain a good fit to the available HERA data and make predictions for deeply virtual Compton scattering measurements.

On the probability distribution of the stochastic saturation scale in QCD

It was recently noticed that high-energy scattering processes in QCD have a stochastic nature. An event-by-event scattering amplitude is characterised by a saturation scale which is a random variable. The statistical ensemble of saturation scales formed with all the events is distributed according to a probability law whose cumulants have been recently computed. In this work, we obtain the probability distribution from the cumulants. We prove that it can be considered as Gaussian over a large domain that we specify and our results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

Geometric scaling in diffractive deep inelastic scattering

The geometric scaling property observed in the HERA data at small x, that the deep inelastic scattering (DIS) total cross-section is a function of only the variable Q^2*x^λ, has been argued to be a manifestation of the saturation regime of QCD and of the saturation scale Q^2_s(x) x^{-λ}. We show that this implies a similar scaling in the context of diffractive DIS and we observe, for several diffractive observables, that the experimental data from HERA confirm the expectations of this scaling.

The Balitsky-Kovchegov equation in full momentum space

We analyse the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) saturation equation in momentum space and solve it numerically. We confirm that, in the limit where the transverse momentum of the incident particle k is much bigger than the momentum transfer q, the equation admits travelling-wave solutions. We extract the q dependence of the saturation scale Q_s(Y) and verify that Q_s(Y=cste) scales as max(q,Q_T), where Q_T is the scale caracterizing the target.

Diffusive scaling and the high-energy limit of deep inelastic scattering in QCD at large N_c

Within the limits of the large-N_c approximation (with N_c the number of colors), we establish the high-energy behaviour of the diffractive and inclusive cross-sections for deep inelastic scattering at fixed impact parameter. We demonstrate that for sufficiently high energies and up to very large values of Q^2, well above the proton average saturation momentum , the cross-sections are dominated by dense fluctuations in the target wavefunction, that is, by the relatively rare gluon configurations which are at saturation on the resolution scale Q^2 of the virtual photon. This has important physical consequences, like the emergence of a new, diffusive, scaling, which replaces the `geometric scaling' property characteristic of the mean field approximation. To establish this, we shall rely on a dipole version of the Good-Walker formula for diffraction (that we shall derive here in the context of DIS), together with the high-energy estimates for the dipole scattering amplitudes which follow from the recently established evolution equations with Pomeron loops and include the relevant fluctuations. We also find that, as a consequence of fluctuations, the diffractive cross-section at high energy is dominated by the elastic scattering of the quark-antiquark component of the virtual photon, up to relatively large virtualities Q^2 >> .

Traveling waves in discretized Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution

We study the asymptotic solutions of a version of the Balitsky-Kovchegov evolution with discrete steps in rapidity. We derive a closed iterative equation in momentum space. We show that it possesses traveling-wave solutions and extract their properties. We find no evidence for chaotic behaviour due to discretization.

Consequences of strong fluctuations on high-energy QCD evolution

We investigate the behaviour of the QCD evolution towards high-energy, in the diffusive approximation, in the limit where the fluctuation contribution is large. Our solution for the equivalent stochastic Fisher equation predicts the amplitude as well as the whole set of correlators in the strong noise limit. The speed of the front and the diffusion coefficient are obtained. We analyse the consequences on high-energy evolution in QCD.

Forward gluon production in hadron-hadron scattering with Pomeron loops

We discuss new physical phenomena expected in particle production in hadron-hadron collisions at high energy, as a consequence of Pomeron loop effects in the evolution equations for the Color Glass Condensate. We focus on gluon production in asymmetric, `dilute-dense', collisions : a dilute projectile scatters off a dense hadronic target, whose gluon distribution is highly evolved. This situation is representative for particle production in proton-proton collisions at forward rapidities (say, at LHC) and admits a dipole factorization similar to that of deep inelastic scattering (DIS). We show that at sufficiently large forward rapidities, where the Pomeron loop effects become important in the evolution of the target wavefunction, gluon production is dominated by `black spots' (saturated gluon configurations) up to very large values of the transverse momentum, well above the average saturation momentum in the target. In this regime, the produced gluon spectrum exhibits diffusive scaling, so like DIS at sufficiently high energy.

Small-x QCD effects in forward-jet and Mueller-Navelet jet production

We investigate small-x QCD effects in forward-jet production in deep inelastic scattering in the kinematic regime where the virtuality of the photon and the transverse momentum of the jet are two hard scales of about the same magnitude. We show that the data from HERA published by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations are well described by leading-logarithmic BFKL predictions. Parametrizations containing saturation effects expected to be relevant at higher energies also compare well to the present data. We extend our analysis to Mueller-Navelet jets at the LHC and discuss to what extent this observable could test these small-x effects and help distinguishing between the different descriptions.

QCD traveling waves at non-asymptotic energies

Using consistent truncations of the BFKL kernel, we derive analytical traveling-wave solutions of the Balitsky-Kovchegov saturation equation for both fixed and running coupling. A universal parametrization of the ``interior'' of the wave front is obtained and compares well with numerical simulations of the original Balitsky-Kovchegov equation, even at non-asymptotic energies. Using this universal parametrization, we find evidence for a traveling-wave pattern of the dipole amplitude determined from the gluon distribution extracted from deep inelastic scattering data.

Testing saturation with large-mass diffraction in DIS

In large-mass diffraction in deep inelastic scattering, we study the gluon jet close to the rapidity gap and show that its transverse momentum spectrum is peaked around a value which caracterizes the onset of S-matrix unitarity. We argue that such a measurement of diffractive jets could help understanding if at the present energies, unitarity comes as a consequence of saturation.

On the Projectile-Target Duality of the Color Glass Condensate in the Dipole Picture

Recently Kovner and Lublinsky proposed a set of equations which can be viewed as dual to JIMWLK evolution. We show that these dual equations have a natural dipole-like structure, as conjectured by Kovner and Lublinsky. In the high energy large N_c limit these evolution equations reduce to equations previously derived in the dipole model. We also show that the dual evolution kernel is scheme dependent, although its action on the weight functional describing a high energy state gives a unique result.

Testing saturation with diffractive jet production in deep inelastic scattering

We analyse the dissociation of a photon in diffractive deep inelastic scattering in the kinematic regime where the diffractive mass is much bigger than the photon virtuality. We consider the dominant q\bar{q}g component keeping track of the transverse momentum of the gluon which can be measured as a final-state jet. We show that the diffractive gluon-jet production cross-section is strongly sensitive to unitarity constraints. In particular, in a model with parton saturation, this cross-section is sensitive to the scale at which unitarity effects become important, the saturation scale. We argue that the measurement of diffractive jets at HERA in the limit of high diffractive mass can provide useful information on the saturation regime of QCD.

Traveling waves and geometric scaling at non-zero momentum transfer

We extend the search for traveling-wave asymptotic solutions of the non-linear Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) saturation equation to non-forward dipole-target amplitudes. Making use of conformal invariant properties of the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) kernel, we exhibit traveling-wave solutions in momentum space in the region where the momentum transfer q is smaller than the characteristic scale Q of the projectile. We prove geometric scaling in the variable Q/(q Omega_s(Y)) where Omega_s(Y) has the same energy dependence as in the forward analysis.
