Magnetic-field -induced structural changes in the electron doped manganites: CaxSm1-xMnO3 (x = 0.8, 0.85)

We studied the correlation between magnetic, electrical, structural, and magnetostriction properties of the electron doped manganites Ca$_x$Sm$_{1-x}$MnO$_3$ (x = 0.85, 0.8). The paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition in both the compounds while cooling is accompanied by an abrupt increase of the spontaneous volume thermal expansion ($Δ$V/V = 0.07 % for x = 0.85 and 0.25 % for x = 0.2). The x = 0.15 exhibits multiple phase separation at 5 K: G-type, and C-type antiferromagnetic phases in orthorhombic (\QTR{it}{Pnma}) and monoclinic (\QTR{it}{P2}$_1$\QTR{it}{/m}) structures respectively. Magnetic study on x = 0.85 also suggest ferromagnetic regions possibly in $Pnma$ structure coexist with the antiferromagnetic phases. The magnetization (M = 1.2 $μ_B$) of x = 0.85 does not reach the value expected for the complete alignment of Mn spins even at 12 T and at 12 K. Metamagnetic transitions (C-type to Ferromagnetic) in both compounds are accompanied by contraction of volumes under high magnetic fields. We suggest that a high magnetic field induces \QTR{it}{P2}$_1$\QTR{it}{/m} (high volume) to \QTR{it}{Pnma} (low volume) structural transition. This is also supported by the neutron diffraction study.

Magnetic-history-dependent nanostructural and resistivity changes in Pr0.5Ca0.5Mn0.98Cr0.02O3

We show that nanostructure and resistivity of Pr0.5Ca0.5Mn0.98Cr0.02O3 are sensitive to whether the sample is zero-field-cooled (ZFC) of field-cooled (FC) either in the 'self magnetic field (H = 2 T)' of the electron microscope or under the external magnetic field of 2 T. FC resistivity at H = 2 T is lower than ZFC values below 140 K. The average value of the chare-orbital modulation vector (q = 0.44) of the FC crystallites is lower than that of the ZFC cystallites (q = 0.48) and the FC crystallites exhibit numerous defects like discommensuration, dislocations and regios with loss of superstructures compared to the ZFC crystallites.

Ca0.85Sm0.15MnO3: A mixed antiferromagnet with unusual properties

We investigated electrical and magnetic properties of the electron-doped manganites Ca1-xSmxMnO3 (0<x<0.2). Our results indicate the possibility of phase separation in electron doped manganites. The compounds with x = 0.13-0.15 show unusual difference between zero-field cooled and field-cooled resistivities which are not observed in lower compositions. Our results suggest that electronic phase separation alone is insufficient to understand the origin of the resistivity irreversibilities.

Variational calculations with improved energy functionals in gauge theories

For a SU(N) Yang-Mills theory, we present variational calculations using gaussian wave functionals combined with an approximate projection on gauge invariant states. The projection amounts to correcting the energy of the gaussian states by substracting the spurious energy associated with gauge rotations. Based on this improved energy functional, we perform variational calculations of the interaction energy in the presence of external electric and magnetic fields. We verify that the ultraviolet behaviour of our approximation scheme is consistent, as it should, with that expected from perturbation theory. In particular, we recover in this variational framework the standard one-loop beta function, with a transparent interpretation of the screening and anti-screening contributions.

The Narrow-band Ultraviolet Imaging Experiment for Wide-field Surveys (NUVIEWS)-I: Dust scattered continuum

We report on the first results of the Narrow-band Ultraviolet Imaging Experiment for Wide-field Surveys (NUVIEWS), a sounding rocket experiment designed to map the far-ultraviolet background in four narrow bands. This is the first imaging measurement of the UV background to cover a substantial fraction of the sky. The narrow band responses (145, 155, 161, and 174 nm, 7-10 nm wide) allow us to isolate background contributions from dust-scattered continuum, H2 fluorescence, and CIV 155 nm emission. In our first flight, we mapped one quarter of the sky with 5-10 arcminute imaging resolution. In this paper, we model the dominant contribution of the background, dust-scattered continuum. Our data base consists of a map of over 10,000 sq. degrees with 468 independent measurements in 6.25 by 6.25 sq. degree bins. Stars and instrumental stellar halos are removed from the data. We present a map of the continuum background obtained in the 174 nm telescope. We use a model that follows Witt, Friedman, and Sasseen (1997: WFS) to account for the inhomogeneous radiation field and multiple scattering effects in clouds. We find that the dust in the diffuse interstellar medium displays a moderate albedo (a=0.55+/-0.1) and highly forward scattering phase function parameter (g=0.75+/-0.1) over a large fraction of the sky, similar to dust in star forming regions. We also have discovered a significant variance from the model.

VLT and HST observations of a candidate high redshift elliptical galaxy in the Hubble Deep Field South

The combined use of the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) UT1 Science Verification (SV) images and of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Hubble Deep Field South observations allows us to strengthen the identification as a candidate elliptical galaxy of the Extremely Red Object HDFS 223251-603910 previously identified by us on the basis of NICMOS and Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory imaging. The photometry presented here includes VLT data in U, B, V, R, I, a STIS unfiltered image, NICMOS J, H, and K band data, thus combining the 16.5 hours of VLT SV exposures with 101 hours of HST observing. The object is detected in all images except the VLT U band and is one of the reddest known with B-K=9.7+-0.5. We consider a wide range of models with different ages, metallicities, star formation histories and dust content, and conclude that the observed spectral energy distribution agrees best with that of an old elliptical galaxy at redshift just below 2. Alternative possibilities are discussed in light of their likelihood and of the perspective of spectroscopic confirmation.

Variational calculations in gauge theories with approximate projection on gauge invariant states

Variational calculations using Gaussian wave functionals combined with an approximate projection on gauge invariant states are presented. We find that the energy exhibits a minimum for a wave functional centered around a non vanishing background magnetic field. We show that divergences can be removed by a renormalization of the coupling constant. The resulting expectation value of the gluon condensate is found to be in qualitative agreement with phenomenological estimates.

Self Similar Solutions of the Evolution Equation of a Scalar Field in an Expanding Geometry

We consider the functional Schrodinger equation for a self interacting scalar field in an expanding geometry. By performing a time dependent scale transformation on the argument of the field we derive a functional Schrodinger equation whose hamiltonian is time independent but involves a time-odd term associated to a constraint on the expansion current. We study the mean field approximation to this equation and generalize in this case, for interacting fields, the solutions worked out by Bunch and Davies for free fields.
