Ion acceleration by an ultrashort laser pulse interacting with a near-critical-density gas jet

We demonstrate laser-driven Helium ion acceleration with cut-off energies above 25 MeV and peaked ion number above $10^8$ /MeV for 22(2) MeV projectiles from near-critical density gas jet targets. We employed shock gas jet nozzles at the high-repetition-rate (HRR) VEGA-2 laser system with 3 J in pulses of 30 fs focused down to intensities in the range between $9\times10^{19}$ W/cm$^2$ and $1.2\times10^{20}$ W/cm$^2$. We demonstrate acceleration spectra with minor shot-to-shot changes for small variations in the target gas density profile. Difference in gas profiles arise due to nozzles being exposed to a experimental environment, partially ablating and melting.

3-D Self-Assembled Soi Mems: An Example of Multiphysics Simulation

MEMS devices are typical systems where multiphysics simulations are unavoidable. In this work, we present possible applications of 3-D self-assembled SOI (Silicon-on-Insulator) MEMS such as, for instance, thermal actuators and flow sensors. The numerical simulations of these microsystems are presented. Structural and thermal parts have to be strongly coupled for correctly describing the fabrication process and for simulating the behavior of these 3-D SOI MEMS.

Model of Electrostatic Actuated Deformable Mirror Using Strongly Coupled Electro-Mechanical Finite Element

The aim of this paper is to deal with multi-physics simulation of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) based on an advanced numerical methodology. MEMS are very small devices in which electric as well as mechanical and fluid phenomena appear and interact. Because of their microscopic scale, strong coupling effects arise between the different physical fields, and some forces, which were negligible at macroscopic scale, have to be taken into account. In order to accurately design such micro-electro-mechanical systems, it is of primary importance to be able to handle the strong coupling between the electric and the mechanical fields. In this paper, the finite element method (FEM) is used to model the strong coupled electro-mechanical interactions and to perform static and transient analyses taking into account large mesh displacements. These analyses will be used to study the behaviour of electrostatically actuated micro-mirrors.

Numerical Study of Hierarchical Hall Edge States on the Disk Geometry

We present a detailed analysis of the exact numerical spectrum of up to ten interacting electrons in the first Landau level on the disk geometry. We study the edge excitations of the hierarchical plateaus and check the predictions of two relevant conformal field theories: the multi-component Abelian theory and the W-infinity minimal theory of the incompressible fluids. We introduce two new criteria for identifying the edge excitations within the low-lying states: the plot of their density profiles and the study of their overlaps with the Jain wave functions in a meaningful basis. We find that the exact bulk and edge excitations are very well reproduced by the Jain states; these, in turn, can be described by the multi-component Abelian conformal theory. Most notably, we observe that the edge excitations form sub-families of the low-lying states with a definite pattern, which is explained by the W-infinity minimal conformal theory. Actually, the two conformal theories are related by a projection mechanism whose effects are observed in the spectrum. Therefore, the edge excitations of the hierarchical Hall states are consistently described by the W-infinity minimal theory, within the finite-size limitations.
