Propagation of sound in a Bose Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

We study the propagation of sound waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We find that the velocity of propagation of sound wavepackets decreases with increasing optical lattice depth, as predicted by the Bogoliubov theory. The strong interplay between nonlinearities and the periodicity of the external potential raise new phenomena which are not present in the uniform case. Shock waves, for instance, can propagate slower than sound waves, due to the negative curvature of the dispersion relation. Moreover, nonlinear corrections to the Bogoliubov theory appear to be important even with very small density perturbations, inducing a saturation on the amplitude of the sound signal.

The role of boson-fermion correlations in the resonance theory of superfluids

Correlations between a composite boson and a fermion pair are considered in the context of the crossover theory of fermionic to bosonic superfluidity. It is shown that such correlations are the minimal ingredients needed in a many-body theory to generate the right boson-boson scattering length in the Bose-Einstein limit of the crossover.

Superfluid Dynamics of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Periodic Potential

We investigate the superfluid properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a one dimensional periodic potential. We study, both analytically (in the tight binding limit) and numerically, the Bloch chemical potential, the Bloch energy and the Bogoliubov dispersion relation, and we introduce {\it two} different, density dependent, effective masses and group velocities. The Bogoliubov spectrum predicts the existence of sound waves, and the arising of energetic and dynamical instabilities at critical values of the BEC quasi-momentum which dramatically affect its coherence properties. We investigate the dependence of the dipole and Bloch oscillation frequencies in terms of an effective mass averaged over the density of the condensate. We illustrate our results with several animations obtained solving numerically the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Feshbach resonances and collapsing Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate the quantum state of burst atoms seen in the recent Rb-85 experiments at JILA. We show that the presence of a resonance scattering state can lead to a pairing instability generating an outflow of atoms with energy comparable to that observed. A resonance effective field theory is used to study this dynamical process in an inhomogeneous system with spherical symmetry.

Expansion of an interacting Fermi gas

We study the expansion of a dilute ultracold sample of fermions initially trapped in a anisotropic harmonic trap. The expansion of the cloud provides valuable information about the state of the system and the role of interactions. In particular the time evolution of the deformation of the expanding cloud behaves quite differently depending on whether the system is in the normal or in the superfluid phase. For the superfluid phase, we predict an inversion of the deformation of the sample, similarly to what happens with Bose-Einstein condensates. Viceversa, in the normal phase, the inversion of the aspect ratio is never achieved, if the mean field interaction is attractive and collisions are negligible.

Dynamic structure factor of a Bose Einstein condensate in a 1D optical lattice

We study the effect of a one dimensional periodic potential on the dynamic structure factor of an interacting Bose Einstein condensate at zero temperature. We show that, due to phononic correlations, the excitation strength towards the first band develops a typical oscillating behaviour as a function of the momentum transfer, and vanishes at even multiples of the Bragg momentum. The effects of interactions on the static structure factor are found to be significantly amplified by the presence of the optical potential. Our predictions can be tested in stimulated photon scattering experiments.

Dynamic splitting of a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We study the dynamic process of splitting a condensate by raising a potential barrier in the center of a harmonic trap. We use a two-mode model to describe the phase coherence between the two halves of the condensate. Furthermore, we explicitly consider the spatial dependence of the mode funtions, which varies depending on the potential barrier. This allows to get the tunneling coupling between the two wells and the on-site energy as a function of the barrier height. Moreover we can get some insight on the collective modes which are excited by raising the barrier. We describe the internal and external degrees of freedom by variational ansatz. We distinguish the possible regimes as a function of the characteristic parameters of the problem and identify the adiabaticity conditions.
