Dynamical properties of a driven dissipative dimerized $S = 1/2$ chain

We consider the dynamical properties of a gapped quantum spin system coupled to the electric field of a laser, which drives the resonant excitation of specific phonon modes that modulate the magnetic interactions. We deduce the quantum master equations governing the time-evolution of both the lattice and spin sectors, by developing a Lindblad formalism with bath operators providing an explicit description of their respective phonon-mediated damping terms. We investigate the nonequilibrium steady states (NESS) of the spin system established by a continuous driving, delineating parameter regimes in driving frequency, damping, and spin-phonon coupling for the establishment of physically meaningful NESS and their related non-trivial properties. Focusing on the regime of generic weak spin-phonon coupling, we characterize the NESS by their frequency and wave-vector content, explore their transient and relaxation behavior, and discuss the energy flow, the system temperature, and the critical role of the type of bath adopted. Our study lays a foundation for the quantitative modelling of experiments currently being designed to control coherent many-body spin states in quantum magnetic materials.

Thermomechanical Behavior of the HL-LHC 11 Tesla Nb3Sn Magnet Coil Constituents during Reaction Heat Treatment

The knowledge of the temperature induced changes of the superconductor volume, and of the thermo-mechanical behaviour of the different coil and tooling materials is required for predicting the coil geometry and the stress distribution in the coil after the Nb3Sn reaction heat treatment. In the present study we have measured the Young's and shear moduli of the HL-LHC 11 T Nb3Sn dipole magnet coil and reaction tool constituents during in situ heat cycles with the dynamic resonance method. The thermal expansion behaviours of the coil components and of a free standing Nb3Sn wire were compared based on dilation experiments.

Radiative rotational lifetimes and state-resolved relative detachment cross sections from photodetachment thermometry of molecular anions in a cryogenic storage ring

Photodetachment thermometry on a beam of OH$^-$ in a cryogenic storage ring cooled to below 10 K is carried out using two-dimensional, frequency and time dependent photodetachment spectroscopy over 20 minutes of ion storage. In equilibrium with the low-level blackbody field, we find an effective radiative temperature near 15 K with about 90% of all ions in the rotational ground state. We measure the J = 1 natural lifetime (about 193 s) and determine the OH$^-$ rotational transition dipole moment with 1.5% uncertainty. We also measure rotationally dependent relative near-threshold photodetachment cross sections for photodetachment thermometry.

Single-particle detection of products from atomic and molecular reactions in a cryogenic ion storage ring

We have used a single-particle detector system, based on secondary electron emission, for counting low-energetic (~keV/u) massive products originating from atomic and molecular ion reactions in the electrostatic Cryogenic Storage Ring (CSR). The detector is movable within the cryogenic vacuum chamber of CSR, and was used to measure production rates of a variety of charged and neutral daughter particles. In operation at a temperature of ~6 K, the detector is characterised by a high dynamic range, combining a low dark event rate with good high-rate particle counting capability. On-line measurement of the pulse height distributions proved to be an important monitor of the detector response at low temperature. Statistical pulse-height analysis allows to infer the particle detection efficiency of the detector, which has been found to be close to unity also in cryogenic operation at 6 K.

Switchable Coupling of Vibrations to Two-Electron Carbon-Nanotube Quantum Dot States

We report transport measurements on a quantum dot in a partly suspended carbon nanotube. Electrostatic tuning allows us to modify and even switch 'on' and 'off' the coupling to the quantized stretching vibration across several charge states. The magnetic-field dependence indicates that only the two-electron spin-triplet excited state couples to the mechanical motion, indicating mechanical coupling to both the valley degree of freedom and the exchange interaction, in contrast to standard models.

Alfvenic Turbulence Beyond the Ambipolar Diffusion Scale

We investigate the nature of the Alfvénic turbulence cascade in two fluid MHD simulations in order to determine if turbulence is damped once the ion and neutral species become decoupled at a critical scale called the ambipolar diffusion scale (L$_{AD}$). Using mode decomposition to separate the three classical MHD modes, we study the second order structure functions of the Alfvén mode velocity field of both neutrals and ions in the reference frame of the local magnetic field. On scales greater than L$_{AD}$ we confirm that two fluid turbulence strongly resembles single fluid MHD turbulence. Our simulations show that the behavior of two fluid turbulence becomes more complex on scales less than L$_{AD}$. We find that Alfvenic turbulence can exist past L$_{AD}$ when the turbulence is globally super-Alfvénic, with the ions and neutrals forming separate cascades once decoupling has taken place. When turbulence is globally sub-Alfvenic and hence strongly anisotropic with a large separation between the parallel and perpendicular decoupling scales, turbulence is damped at L$_{AD}$. We also find that the power spectrum of the kinetic energy in the damped regime is consistent with a $k^{-4}$ scaling (in agreement with the predictions of Lazarian, Vishniac & Cho 2004).

Optimal Control of the Inhomogeneous Relativistic Maxwell Newton Lorentz Equations

This note is concerned with an optimal control problem governed by the relativistic Maxwell-Newton-Lorentz equations, which describes the motion of charges particles in electro-magnetic fields and consists of a hyperbolic PDE system coupled with a nonlinear ODE. An external magnetic field acts as control variable. Additional control constraints are incorporated by introducing a scalar magnetic potential which leads to an additional state equation in form of a very weak elliptic PDE. Existence and uniqueness for the state equation is shown and the existence of a global optimal control is established. Moreover, first-order necessary optimality conditions in form of Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions are derived. A numerical test illustrates the theoretical findings.

Low-frequency Noise in Individual Carbon Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors with Top, Side and Back Gate Configurations: Effect of Gamma Irradiation

We report on the influence of low gamma irradiation (10^4 Gy) on the noise properties of individual carbon nanotube (CNT) field-effect transistors (FETs) with different gate configurations and two different dielectric layers, SiO2 and Al2O3. Before treatment, strong generation-recombination (GR) noise components are observed. These data are used to identify several charge traps related to dielectric layers of the FETs by determining their activation energy. Investigation of samples with a single SiO2 dielectric layer as well as with two dielectric layers allows us to separate traps for each of the two dielectric layers. We reveal that each charge trap level observed in the side gate operation splits into two levels in top gate operation due to a different potential profile along the CNT channel. After gamma irradiation, only reduced flicker noise is registered in the noise spectra, which indicates a decrease of the number of charge traps. The mobility, which is estimated to be larger than 2x10^4 cm2V-1s-1 at room temperature, decreases only slightly after radiation treatment demonstrating high radiation hardness of the CNTs. Finally, we study the influence of Schottky barriers at the metal-nanotube interface on the transport properties of FETs analyzing the behavior of the flicker noise component.

Transport in coupled graphene-nanotube quantum devices

We report on the fabrication and characterization of all-carbon hybrid quantum devices based on graphene and single-walled carbon nanotubes. We discuss both, carbon nanotube quantum dot devices with graphene charge detectors and nanotube quantum dots with graphene leads. The devices are fabricated by chemical vapor deposition growth of carbon nanotubes and subsequent structuring of mechanically exfoliated graphene. We study the detection of individual charging events in the carbon nanotube quantum dot by a nearby graphene nanoribbon and show that they lead to changes of up to 20% of the conductance maxima in the graphene nanoribbon acting as a good performing charge detector. Moreover, we discuss an electrically coupled graphene-nanotube junction, which exhibits a tunneling barrier with tunneling rates in the low GHz regime. This allows to observe Coulomb blockade on a carbon nanotube quantum dot with graphene source and drain leads.

Europium nitride: A novel diluted magnetic semiconductor

Europium nitride is semiconducting and contains non-magnetic \3+, but sub-stoichiometric EuN has Eu in a mix of 2+ and 3+ charge states. We show that at \2+ ~concentrations near 15-20% EuN is ferromagnetic with a Curie temperature as high as 120 K. The \3+ ~polarization follows that of the \2+, confirming that the ferromagnetism is intrinsic to the EuN which is thus a novel diluted magnetic semiconductor. Transport measurements shed light on the likely exchange mechanisms.

MHD modeling on geodesic grids

This report describes a new magnetohydrodynamic numerical model based on a hexagonal spherical geodesic grid. The model is designed to simulate astrophysical flows of partially ionized plasmas around a central compact object, such as a star or a planet with a magnetic field. The geodesic grid, produced by a recursive subdivision of a base platonic solid (an icosahedron), is free from control volume singularities inherent in spherical polar grids. Multiple populations of plasma and neutral particles, coupled via charge-exchange interactions, can be simulated simultaneously with this model. Our numerical scheme uses piecewise linear reconstruction on a surface of a sphere in a local two-dimensional "Cartesian" frame. The code employs HLL-type approximate Riemann solvers and includes facilities to control the divergence of magnetic field and maintain pressure positivity. Several test solutions are discussed, including a problem of an interaction between the solar wind and the local interstellar medium, and a simulation of Earth's magnetosphere.

Spin/orbit moment imbalance in the near-zero moment ferromagnetic semiconductor SmN

SmN is ferromagnetic below 27 K, and its net magnetic moment of 0.03 Bohr magnetons per formula unit is one of the smallest magnetisations found in any ferromagnetic material. The near-zero moment is a result of the nearly equal and opposing spin and orbital moments in the 6H5/2 ground state of the Sm3+ ion, which leads finally to a nearly complete cancellation for an ion in the SmN ferromagnetic state. Here we explore the spin alignment in this compound with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Sm L2,3 edges. The spectral shapes are in qualitative agreement with computed spectra based on an LSDA+U (local spin density approximation with Hubbard-U corrections) band structure, though there remain differences in detail which we associate with the anomalous branching ratio in rare-earth L edges. The sign of the spectra determine that in a magnetic field the Sm 4f spin moment aligns antiparallel to the field; the very small residual moment in ferromagnetic SmN aligns with the 4f orbital moment and antiparallel to the spin moment. Further measurements on very thin (1.5 nm) SmN layers embedded in GdN show the opposite alignment due to a strong Gd-Sm exchange, suggesting that the SmN moment might be further reduced by about 0.5 % Gd substitution.

Near-Zero Moment Ferromagnetism in the Semiconductor SmN

The magnetic behaviour of SmN has been investigated in stoichiometric polycrystalline films. All samples show ferromagnetic order with Curie temperature (T_c) of 27 +/- 3 K, evidenced by the occurrence of hysteresis below T_c. The ferromagnetic state is characterised by a very small moment and a large coercive field, exceeding even the maximum applied field of 6 T below about 15 K. The residual magnetisation at 2 K, measured after cooling in the maximum field, is 0.035 mu_B per Sm. Such a remarkably small moment results from a near cancellation of the spin and orbital contributions for Sm3+ in SmN. Coupling to an applied field is therefore weak, explaining the huge coercive field . The susceptibility in the paramagnetic phase shows temperature-independent Van Vleck and Curie-Weiss contributions. The Van Vleck contribution is in quantitative agreement with the field-induced admixture of the J=7/2 excited state and the 5/2 ground state. The Curie-Weiss contribution returns a Curie temperature that agrees with the onset of ferromagnetic hysteresis, and a conventional paramagnetic moment with an effective moment of 0.4 mu_B per Sm ion, in agreement with expectations for the crystal-field modified effective moment on the Sm3+ ions.

Modularity of some non-rigid double octic Calabi-Yau threefolds

In this paper we discuss four methods of proving modularity of Calabi--Yau threefolds with $h^{12}=1$: existence of elliptic ruled surfaces inside (Hulek-Verrill), correspondence with a product of an elliptic curve and a K3 surface (Livné-Yui), correspondence with a (modular) rigid Calabi-Yau threefold, and existence of an involution splitting the fourdimensional representation into twodimensional subrepresentations. We apply these methods to prove modularity of 17 out of 18 double octic Calabi-Yau threefolds for which "numerical evidence of modularity" was found in the second Author's thesis. We observe that modularity holds for those elements in a pencil having some additional geometric properties. In the proofs we use representations of the considered Calabi-Yau threefolds as a Kummer fibration associated to a fiber product of rational elliptic fibrations.

Imperfections in focal conic domains: the role of dislocations

It is usual to think of Focal Conic Domains (FCD) as perfect geometric constructions in which the layers are folded into Dupin cyclides, about an ellipse and a hyperbola that are conjugate. This ideal picture is often far from reality. We have investigated in detail the FCDs in several materials which have a transition from a smectic A (SmA) to a nematic phase. The ellipse and the hyperbola are seldom perfect, and the FCD textures also suffer large transformations (in shape or/and in nature) when approaching the transition to the nematic phase, or appear imperfect on cooling from the nematic phase. We interpret these imperfections as due to the interaction of FCDs with dislocations. We analyze theoretically the general principles subtending the interaction mechanisms between FCDs and finite Burgers vector dislocations, namely the formation of kinks on disclinations, to which dislocations are attached, and we present models relating to some experimental results. Whereas the principles of the interactions are very general, their realizations can differ widely in function of the boundary conditions.

Modular Calabi-Yau threefolds of level eight

In the studies on the modularity conjecture for rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds several examples with the unique level 8 cusp form were constructed. According to the Tate Conjecture correspondences inducing isomorphisms on the middle cohomologies should exist between these varieties. In the paper we construct several examples of such correspondences. In the constructions elliptic fibrations play a crucial role. In fact we show that all but three examples are in some sense built upon two modular curves from the Beauville list.

Geometry and Arithmetic of certain Double Octic Calabi-Yau Manifolds

We study Calabi-Yau manifolds constructed as double covers of ${\mathbb P}^3$ branched along an octic surface. We give a list of 85 examples corresponding to arrangements of eight planes defined over ${\mathbb Q}$. The Hodge numbers are computed for all examples. There are 7 rigid Calabi-Yau manifolds and 14 families with $h^{1,2}=1$. The modularity conjecture is verified for all the rigid examples.

Relativistic photoemission theory for general nonlocal potentials

An improved formulation of the one-step model of photoemission from crystal surfaces is proposed which overcomes different limitations of the original theory. Considering the results of an electronic-structure calculation, the electronic (one-particle) potential and the (many-body) self-energy, as given quantities, we derive explicit expressions for the dipole transition-matrix elements. The theory is formulated within a spin-polarized, relativistic framework for general nonspherical and space-filling one-particle potentials and general nonlocal, complex and energy-dependent self-energies. It applies to semi-infinite lattices with perfect lateral translational invariance and arbitrary number of atoms per unit cell.
