Design concept for the second interaction region for Electron-Ion Collider

The possibility of two interaction regions (IRs) is a design requirement for the Electron Ion Collider (the EIC). There is also a significant interest from the nuclear physics community in a 2nd IR with measurements capabilities complementary to those of the first IR. While the 2nd IR will be in operation over the entire energy range of ~20GeV to ~140GeV center of mass (CM). The 2nd IR can also provide an acceptance coverage complementary to that of the first. We present a brief overview and the current progress of the 2nd IR design in terms of the parameters, magnet layout, and beam dynamics.

High energy Coulomb-scattered electrons for relativistic particle beam diagnostics

A new system used for monitoring energetic Coulomb-scattered electrons as the main diagnostic for accurately aligning the electron and ion beams in the new Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) electron lenses is described in detail. The theory of electron scattering from relativistic ions is developed and applied to the design and implementation of the system used to achieve and maintain the alignment. Commissioning with gold and 3He beams is then described as well as the successful utilization of the new system during the 2015 RHIC polarized proton run. Systematic errors of the new method are then estimated. Finally, some possible future applications of Coulomb-scattered electrons for beam diagnostics are briefly discussed.

Status of head-on beam-beam compensation in RHIC

In polarized proton operation, the performance of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) is limited by the head-on beam-beam effect. To overcome this limitation, two electron lenses are under commissioning. We give an overview of head-on beam-beam compensation in general and in the specific design for RHIC, which is based on electron lenses. The status of installation and commissioning are presented along with plans for the future.

Beam-beam effects in space charge dominated ion beams

During low-energy operations below the regular injection energy in the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), significant beam lifetime reductions due to the beam-beam interaction in conjunction with large space charge tune shifts have been observed. We report on dedicated experiments aimed at understanding this phenomenon as well as preliminary simulation results, and propose alternative working points to improve the beam lifetime in future lowenergy RHIC runs.

An Investigation on Cooling of CZT Co-Planar Grid Detectors

The effect of moderate cooling on CdZnTe semiconductor detectors has been studied for the COBRA experiment. Improvements in energy resolution and low energy threshold were observed and quantified as a function of temperature. Leakage currents are found to contribute typically $\sim$5 keV to the widths of photopeaks.

QCD physics with polarized antiprotons at GSI

A polarized antiproton beam at the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research, proposed by the PAX collaboration, will open a window to new physics uniquely accessible at the new High Energy Storage Ring. Our proposal to realize an asymmetric collider, in which polarized protons with momenta of about 3.5 GeV/c collide with polarized antiprotons with momenta up to 15 GeV/c, is well--suited to perform a direct measurement of the transversity distribution function $h_1$. In this report we summarize the outcome of various working group meetings within the PAX collaboration. The overall machine setup at the HESR, proposed by the PAX collaboration, is described along with the associated PAX experimental program.
