A Catalog of Emission line profiles for Planetary Nebulae

Using the Cloudy_3D code (Morisset, this conference), we run a set of models to build a catalog of emission line profiles of PNe. The goal is to cover the main morphologies (spherical, ellipsoidal, bipolar, thin or thick shells) and to compute profiles changing the orientation of the nebula, the expansion velocity law (including or not turbulence), the position/size of the aperture. The results is a huge set of profiles and PV-diagrams that can be compared to observations as a help to derive morpho-kinematical properties of real objects.

Cloudy_3D, a new pseudo-3D photoionization code

We developed a new quick pseudo-3D photoionization code based on Cloudy (G. Ferland) and IDL (RSI) tools. The code is running the 1D photoionization code Cloudy various times, changing at each run the input parameters (e.g. inner radius, density law) according to an angular law describing the morphology of the object. Then a cube is generated by interpolating the outputs of Cloudy. In each cell of the cube, the physical conditions (electron temperature and density, ionic fractions) and the emissivities of lines are determined. Associated tools (VISNEB and VELNEB_3D) are used to rotate the nebula and to compute surface brightness maps and emission line profiles, given a velocity law and taking into account the effect of the thermal broadening and eventually the turbulence. Integrated emission line profiles are computed, given aperture shapes and positions (seeing and instrumental width effects are included). The main advantage of this tool is the short time needed to compute a model (a few tens minutes).

Galactic Planetary Nebulae with Wolf-Rayet Nuclei III. Kinematical Analysis of a Large Sample of Nebulae

Expansion velocities (Vexp) of different ions and line widths at the base of the lines are measured and analyzed for 24 PNe with [WC]-type nuclei (WRPNe), 9 PNe ionized by WELS (WLPNe) and 14 ordinary PNe. A comparative study of the kinematical behavior of the sample clearly demonstrates that WRPNe have in average 40-45% larger Vexp, and possibly more turbulence than WLPNe and ordinary PNe. WLPNe have velocity fields very much alike the ones of ordinary PNe, rather than the ones of WRPNe. All the samples (WRPNe, WLPNe and ordinary PNe) show expansion velocities increasing with age indicators, for example is larger for low-density nebulae and also it is larger for nebulae around high-temperature stars. This age effect is much stronger for evolved WRPNe, suggesting that the [WC] winds have been accelerating the nebulae for a long time, while for non-WRPNe the acceleration seems to stop at some point when the star reaches a temperature of about 90,000-100,000 K. Non-WR nebulae reach a maximum Vexp < 30 km/s while evolved WRPNe reach maximum Vexp of about 40 km/s. For all kind of objects (WRPNe and non-WRPNe) it is found that in average Vexp(N+) is slightly larger than Vexp(O++), indicating that the nebulae present acceleration of the external shells.

NEBU_3D: A fast pseudo-3D photoionization code for aspherical planetary nebulae and HII regions

We describe a pseudo-3D photoionization code, NEBU_3D and its associated visualization tool, VIS_NEB3D, which are able to easily and rapidly treat a wide variety of nebular geometries, by combining models obtained with a 1D photoionization code. We also present a tool, VELNEB_3D, which can be applied to the results of 1D or 3D photoionization codes to generate emission line profiles, position-velocity maps and 3D maps in any emission line by assuming an arbitrary velocity field. As examples of the capabilities of these new tools, we consider three very different theoretical cases. The first one is a blister HII region, for which we have also constructed a spherical model (the spherical impostor) which has exactly the same Hbeta surface brightness distribution as the blister model and the same ionizing star. The second example shows how complex line profiles can be obtained even with a simple expansion law if the nebula is bipolar and the slit slightly off-center. The third example shows different ways to produce line profiles that could be attributed to a turbulent velocity field while there is no turbulence in the model.

GMOS-IFU Spectroscopy of 167-317 (LV2) Proplyd in Orion

We present high spatial resolution spectroscopic observations of the proplyd 167-317 (LV2) near the Trapezium cluster in the Orion nebula, obtained during the System Verification run of the Gemini Multi Object Spectrograph (GMOS) Integral Field Unit (IFU) at the Gemini South Observatory. We have detected 38 forbidden and permitted emission lines associated with the proplyd and its redshifted jet. We have been able to detect three velocity components in the profiles of some of these lines: a peak with a 28-33 km/s systemic velocity that is associated with the photoevaporated proplyd flow, a highly redshifted component associated with a previously reported jet (which has receding velocities of about 80-120 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity and is spatially distributed to the southeast of the proplyd) and a less obvious, approaching structure, which may possibly be associated with a faint counter-jet with systemic velocity of (-75 +/- 15) km/s. We find evidences that the redshifted jet has a variable velocity, with slow fluctuations as a function of the distance from the proplyd. We present several background subtracted, spatially distributed emission line maps and we use this information to obtain the dynamical characteristics over the observed field. Using a simple model and with the extinction corrected Halpha fluxes, we estimate the mass loss rate for both the proplyd photoevaporated flow and the redshifted microjet, obtaining (6.2 +/- 0.6) x 10^{-7} M_sun/year and (2.0 +/- 0.7) x 10^{-8} M_sun/year, respectively.

Nanodiamond dust and the far-ultraviolet quasar break

We explore the possibility that the steepening observed shortward of 1000A in the energy distribution of quasars may result from absorption by dust, being either intrinsic to the quasar environment or intergalactic. We find that a dust extinction curve consisting of nanodiamonds, composed of terrestrial cubic diamonds or with surface impurities as found in carbonaceous chondrite meteorites, such as Allende, is successful in reproducing the sharp break observed. The intergalactic dust model is partially successful in explaining the shape of the composite energy distribution, but must be discarded in the end, as the amount of crystalline dust required is unreasonable and would imply an improbable fine tuning among the dust formation processes. The alternative intrinsic dust model requires a mixture of both cubic diamonds and Allende nanodiamonds and provide a better fit of the UV break. The gas column densities implied are of the order 10^{20} cm^{-2} assuming solar metallicity for carbon and full depletion of carbon into dust. The absorption only occurs in the ultraviolet and is totally negligible in the visible. The minimum dust mass required is of the order ~ 0.003 r_{pc}^{2}M_o, where r_{pc} is the distance in parsec between the dust screen and the continuum source. The intrinsic dust model reproduces the flux {\it rise} observed around 660A in key quasar spectra quite well. We present indirect evidence of a shallow continuum break near 670A (18.5 eV), which would be intrinsic to the quasar continuum.

Modelling of aspherical nebulae. I. A quick pseudo-3D photoionization code

We describe a pseudo-3D photoionization code, NEBU_3D and its associated visualization tool, VIS_NEB3D, which are able to easily and rapidly treat a wide variety of nebular geometries, by combining models obtained with a 1D photoionization code. The only requirement for the code to work is that the ionization source is uniqu e and not extended. It is applicable as long as the diffuse ionizing radiation f ield is not dominant and strongly inhomogeneous. As examples of the capabilities of these new tools, we consider two very differ ent theoretical cases. One is that of a high excitation planetary nebula that ha s an ellipsoidal shape with two polar density knots. The other one is that of a blister HII region, for which we have also constructed a spherical model (the sp herical impostor) which has exactly the same Hbeta surface brightness distrib ution as the blister model and the same ionizing star. These two examples warn against preconceived ideas when interpreting spectroscop ic and imaging data of HII regions and planetary nebulae. The tools NEBU_3D and VIS_NEB3D, which will be made publicly available in the future, should facilitat e the performance of numerical experiments, to yield a better understanding of t he physics of aspherical ionized nebulae.

Mid-IR observations of Galactic HII regions: constraining ionizing spectra of massive stars and the nature of the observed excitation sequences

Extensive photoionization model grids for single star HII regions using a variety of recent state-of-the-art stellar atmosphere models have been computed with the main aim of constraining/testing their predicted ionizing spectra against recent ISO mid-IR observations of Galactic HII regions, which probe the ionizing spectra between ~ 24 and 41 eV thanks to Ne, Ar, and S fine structure lines. Particular care has been paid to examining in detail the dependences of the nebular properties on the numerous nebular parameters (mean ionization parameter U, abundances, dust etc.) which are generally unconstrained for the objects considered here. Finally we have examined which parameters are chiefly responsible for the observed mid-IR excitation sequences. The galactic gradient of metallicity changing the shape of the stellar emission is found to be one of the drivers for the excitation sequence of Galactic HII regions, the actual contribution of this effect being finally atmosphere model dependent. We find that the dispersion of Teff between different HII regions due to statistical sampling of the IMF plus additional scatter in the ionization parameter are probably the dominant driver for the observed excitation scatter.

O stars effective temperature and HII regions ionization parameter gradients in the Galaxy

Extensive photoionization model grids are computed for single star HII regions using stellar atmosphere models from the WM-basic code. Mid-IR emission line intensities are predicted and diagnostic diagrams of [NeIII]/[NeII] and [SIV]/[SIII] excitation ratio are build, taking into account the metallicities of both the star and the HII region. The diagrams are used in conjunction with galactic HII region observations obtained with the ISO Observatory to determine the effective temperature Teff of the exciting O stars and the mean ionization parameter U. Teff and U are found to increase and decrease, respectively, with the metallicity of the HII region represented by the [Ne/Ne_sol] ratio. No evidence is found for gradients of Teff or U with galactocentric distance Rgal. The observed excitation sequence with Rgal is mainly due to the effect of the metallicity gradient on the spectral ionizing shape, upon which the effect of an increase in Teff with Z is superimposed. We show that not taking properly into account the effect of metallicity on the ionizing shape of the stellar atmosphere would lead to an apparent decrease of Teff with Z and an increase of Teff with Rgal.

Lights in the Shadows, 3D-modelling knots with MOCASSIN

Most of the enveloppes of Planetary Nebulae (and other objects like novae) are far from beeing homogeneous: clumps, knots and tails are often observed. We present here the first attempt to build a 3D-photoionization model of a knot and the corresponding tail, ionized by diffused radiation issuing from surrounding material.

Three-dimensional photoionization modelling of the planetary nebula NGC 3918

The three-dimensional Monte Carlo photoionization code Mocassin has been applied to construct a realistic model of the planetary nebula NGC 3918. Three different geometric models were tried. The effects of the interaction of the diffuse fields coming from two adjacent regions of different densities were investigated. These are found to be non-negligible, even for the relatively uncomplicated case of a biconical geometry. We found that the ionization structure of low ionization species near the boundaries is particularly affected. It is found that all three models provided acceptable matches to the integrated nebular optical and ultraviolet spectrum. Large discrepancies were found between all of the model predictions of infrared fine-structure line fluxes and ISO SWS measurements. This was found to be largely due to an offset of ~14 arcsec from the centre of the nebula that affected all of the ISO observations of NGC 3918. For each model, we also produced projected emission-line maps and position-velocity diagrams from synthetic long-slit spectra, which could be compared to recent HST images and ground-based long-slit echelle spectra. This comparison showed that spindle-like model B provided the best match to the observations. We have therefore shown that although the integrated emission line spectrum of NGC 3918 can be reproduced by all three of the three-dimensional models investigated in this work, the capability of creating projected emission-line maps and position-velocity diagrams from synthetic long-slit spectra was crucial in allowing us to constrain the structure of this object.

A photoionization model of the compact HII region G29.96-0.02

We present a detailed photoionization model of G29.96-0.02 (hereafter G29.96), one of the brightest Galactic Ultra Compact HII (UCHII) regions in the Galaxy. This source has been observed extensively at radio and infrared wavelengths. The most recent data include a complete ISO (SWS and LWS) spectrum, which displays a remarkable richness in atomic fine-structure lines. The number of observables is twice as much as the number available in previous studies. In addition, most atomic species are now observed in two ionization stages. The radio and infrared data on G29.96 are best reproduced using a nebular model with two density components: a diffuse (n_e~680cm-3) extended (~1 pc) component surrounding a compact (~0.1 pc) dense (n_e~57000cm-3) core. The properties of the ionizing star were derived using state-of-the-art stellar atmosphere models. CoStar models yield an effective temperature of \~30^{+2}_{-1} kK whereas more recent non-LTE line blanketed atmospheres with stellar winds indicate somewhat higher values, Teff~32--38 kK. This range in Teff is compatible with all observational constraints, including near-infrared photometry and bolometric luminosity. The range 33-36 kK is also compatible with the spectral type O5-O8 determined by Watson and Hanson (97) when recent downward revisions of the effective temperature scale of O stars are taken into account. The age of the ionizing star of G29.96 is found to be a few 10^6 yr, much older than the expected lifetime of UCHII regions. Accurate gas phase abundances are derived with the most robust results being Ne/S=7.5 and N/O=0.43 (1.3 and 3.5 times the solar values, respectively).

ISO spectroscopy of compact HII regions in the Galaxy. II Ionization and elemental abundances

Based on the ISO spectral catalogue of compact HII regions by Peeters et al. (2001), we present a first analysis of the hydrogen recombination and atomic fine-structure lines originated in the ionized gas. The sample consists of 34 HII regions located at galactocentric distances between Rgal = 0 and 15 kpc. The SWS HI recombination lines between 2 and 8 mum are used to estimate the extinction law at these wavelengths for 14 HII regions. An extinction in the K band between 0 and $\sim$ 3 mag. has been derived. The fine-structure lines of N, O, Ne, S and Ar are detected in most of the sources. Most of these elements are observed in two different ionization stages probing a range in ionization potential up to 41 eV. The ISO data, by itself or combined with radio data taken from the literature, is used to derive the elemental abundances relative to hydrogen. The present data thus allow us to describe for each source its elemental abundance, its state of ionization and to constrain the properties of the ionizing star(s).

Morphology and kinematics of Planetary Nebulae II. A Diabolo model for NGC 3132

We use a 3D photoionization modeling tool to study the morpho-kinematic properties of the Planetary Nebula (PN) NGC 3132. We show that it is possible to reproduce the low resolution observations (spectra and images) with an ellipsoidal shell. However, high resolution observations, as those showing a density variation along the nebula and the [O III]5007 velocity profiles, definitively rule out this description. We show that a bipolar Diabolo shape with a 40 degres rotation of the symmetry axis relative to the line of sight successfully reproduces the observed images, as well as the high resolution observations.

Morphology and kinematics of Planetary Nebulae. I.A new modeling tool

We present a new modeling tool for planetary nebulae, based on 3D photoionization calculations. Our goal is to show that all the information provided by observations, regarding kinematics and morphology, have to be consistently accounted for, in order to get a real insight of the object. Only 3D simulations offer this possibility. From models for two theoretical PNe, we show that the enhancement in the equatorial zone observed in several PNe is not necessarily due to a density gradient, as usually interpreted. It is also shown that asymmetric velocity profiles often observed (e.g., Gesicki et al. 1998) can be easily reproduced. Observations providing a better insight on the morphology of the PN are discussed.
