The HADES Tracking System

The tracking system of the dielectron spectrometer HADES at GSI Darmstadt is formed out of 24 low-mass, trapezoidal multi-layer drift chambers providing in total about 30 square meter of active area. Low multiple scattering in the in total four planes of drift chambers before and after the magnetic field is ensured by using helium-based gas mixtures and aluminum cathode and field wires. First in-beam performance results are contrasted with expectations from simulations. Emphasis is placed on the energy loss information, exploring its relevance regarding track recognition.

The Emission Pattern of High-Energy Pions: A New Probe for the Early Phase of Heavy Ion Collisions

The emission pattern of charged pions has been measured in Au+Au collisions at 1 GeV/nucleon incident energy. In peripheral collisions and at target rapidities, high-energy pions are emitted preferentially towards the target spectator matter. In contrast, low-energy pions are emitted predominantly in the opposite direction. The corresponding azimuthal anisotropy is explained by the interaction of pions with projectile and target spectator matter. This interaction with the spectator matter causes an effective shadowing which varies with time during the reaction. Our observations show that high-energy pions stem from the early stage of the collision whereas low-energy pions freeze out later.

Enhanced Out-of-plane Emission of K+ Mesons observed in Au+Au Collisions at 1 AGeV

The azimuthal angular distribution of K+ mesons has been measured in Au + Au collisions at 1 AGeV. In peripheral and semi-central collisions, K+ mesons preferentially are emitted perpendicular to the reaction plane. The strength of the azimuthal anisotropy of K+ emission is comparable to the one of pions. No in-plane flow was found for K+ mesons near projectile and target rapidity.

Coulomb Effects in Charged Particle Spectra from Heavy Ion Collisions at AGS and SIS

Data from the AGS experiment E866 on charged particles emitted in central Au+Au collisions at 10.8 AGeV incident energy is reviewed. The study of spectral shapes indicates the presence of collective transverse flow and - in particular for charged pions - of Coulomb final state interaction between emitted particles and the nuclear charge distribution. The comparison to SIS pion data measured with KaoS elucidates the role of charged pions to probe nuclear reaction dynamics at lower incident energies.

Recent Results from E866 at BNL

Recent and preliminary single-particle data are presented from the AGS Experiment 866 at BNL. Emphasis is put on the transverse mass as well as the rapidity distributions of charged pions, kaons, protons, deuterons and anti-protons measured in the most central Au+Au collisions at an incident kinetic energy of 10.8 AGeV. The data suggest a high degree of stopping power present in these reactions. Applying an expanding fireball scenario to describe the experimental distributions substantial transverse and longitudinal flow velocities result.
