Science Prospects for the Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory: SWGO

Ground-based gamma-ray astronomy is now well established as a key observational approach to address critical topics at the frontiers of astroparticle physics and high-energy astrophysics. Whilst the field of TeV astronomy was once dominated by arrays of atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes, ground-level particle detection has now been demonstrated to be an equally viable and strongly complementary approach. Ground-level particle detection provides continuous monitoring of the overhead sky, critical for the mapping of extended structures and capturing transient phenomena. As demonstrated by HAWC and LHAASO, the technique provides the best available sensitivity above a few tens of TeV, and for the first time access to the PeV energy range. Despite the success of this approach, there is so far no major ground-level particle-based observatory with access to the Southern sky. HESS, located in Namibia, is the only major gamma-ray instrument in the Southern Hemisphere, and has shown the extraordinary richness of the inner galaxy in the TeV band, but is limited in terms of field of view and energy reach. SWGO is an international effort to construct the first wide-field instrument in the south with deep sensitivity from 100s of GeV into the PeV domain. The project is now close to the end of its development phase and planning for construction of the array in Chile has begun. Here we describe the baseline design, expected sensitivity and resolution, and describe in detail the main scientific topics that will be addressed by this new facility and its initial phase SWGO-A. We show that SWGO will have a transformational impact on a wide range of topics from cosmic-ray acceleration and transport to the nature of dark matter. SWGO represents a key piece of infrastructure for multi-messenger astronomy in the next decade, with strong scientific synergies with the nearby CTA Observatory.

Discussing Cosmic String Configurations in a Supersymmetric Scenario without Lorentz Invariance

The main goal of this work is to pursue an investigation of cosmic string configurations focusing on possible consequences of the Lorentz-symmetry breaking by a background vector. We analyze the possibility of cosmic strings as a viable source for fermionic Cold Dark Matter particles. Whenever the latter are charged and have mass of the order of $10^{13}GeV$, we propose they could decay into usual cosmic rays. We have also contemplated the sector of neutral particles generated in our model. Indeed, being neutral, these particles are hard to be detected; however, by virtue of the Lorentz-symmetry breaking background vector, it is possible that they may present an electromagnetic interaction with a significant magnetic moment.

Vortex Formation in a $U(1) \times U(1)'$, N=2, D=3 Supersymmetric Gauge Model

In this work, we study a $U(1) \times U(1) ^{\prime}-$ model that results from a dimensional reduction of the N=1-D=4 supersymmetric version of the Cremer-Scherk-Kalb-Ramond model with non-minimal coupling to matter. Field truncations are not carried out, two Abelian symmetries coexist and three vector fields are present; two of them are gauge bosons. Then, by considering the full $N=2-D=3$ supersymmetric model, we study the mechanism for magnetic vortex formation by means of the Bogomol'nyi relations, the magnetic flux and the topological charge in the presence of the two gauge potentials. A short discussion on the relation between our $N=2-D=3$ supersymmetric model and vortices in superfluid films is also presented.

Cosmic string configuration in a five dimensional Brans-Dicke theory

We consider a scalar field interaction with a cosmic string configuration in a flat 3-brane. The origin of this field is given by a compactification mechanism in the context of a 5-dimensional Brans-Dicke theory. We use the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation constraint to analyse a possibility of optical activity effect in connection with the Brans-Dicke parameter w and obtain relations between the compactification modes. We show that the dilatons produced by a cosmic string can decay into gauge bosons with masses given by the compactification modes. The Brans- Dicke parameter w imposes stringent constraints on the mass of the dilaton which lives in the brane and help us to understand the energy scales. In this scenario we estimate the lifetime of the dilaton which decays into light gauge bosons and the dependence of this phenomenon with the Brans-Dicke parameter.

Plane Gravitational Radiation from Neutrinos Source with Kalb-Ramond Coupling

In this work, we propose a model based on a non-minimal coupling of neutrinos to a Kalb-Ramond field. The latter is taken as a possible source for gravitational radiation. As an immediate illustration of this system, we have studied the case where gravitational (plane) wave solutions behave as damped harmonic oscillators.

Global-String and Vortex Superfluids in a Supersymmetric Scenario

The main goal of this work is to investigate the possibility of finding the supersymmetric version of the U(1)-global string model which behaves as a vortex-superfluid. To describe the superfluid phase, we introduce a Lorentz-symmetry breaking background that, in an approach based on supersymmetry, leads to a discussion on the relation between the violation of Lorentz symmetry and explicit soft supersymmetry breakings. We also study the relation between the string configuration and the vortex-superfluid phase. In the framework we settle down in terms of superspace and superfields, we actually establish a duality between the vortex degrees of freedom and the component fields of the Kalb-Ramond superfield. We make also considerations about the fermionic excitations that may appear in connection with the vortex formation.

Physics Beyond the Standard Model: Focusing on the Muon Anomaly

We present a model based on the implication of an exceptional E_{6}-GUT symmetry for the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. We follow a particular chain of breakings with Higgses in the 78 and 351 representations. We analyse the radiative correction contributions to the muon mass and the effects of the breaking of the so-called Weinberg symmetry. We also estimate the range of values of the parameters of our model.

Lorentz-breaking effects in scalar-tensor theories of gravity

In this work, we study the effects of breaking Lorentz symmetry in scalar-tensor theories of gravity taking torsion into account. We show that a space-time with torsion interacting with a Maxwell field by means of a Chern-Simons-like term is able to explain the optical activity in syncrotron radiation emitted by cosmological distant radio sources. Without specifying the source of the dilaton-gravity, we study the dilaton-solution. We analyse the physical implications of this result in the Jordan-Fierz frame. We also analyse the effects of the Lorentz breaking in the cosmic string formation process. We obtain the solution corresponding to a cosmic string in the presence of torsion by keeping track of the effects of the Chern-Simons coupling and calculate the charge induced on this cosmic string in this framework. We also show that the resulting charged cosmic string gives us important effects concerning the background radiation. The optical activity in this case is also worked out and discussed.

A Discussion on Supersymmetric Cosmic Strings with Gauge-Field Mixing

In this paper, following a stream of investigation on supersymmetric gauge theories with cosmic string solutions, we contemplate the possibility of building up a D-and-F term cosmic string by means of a gauge-field mixing in connection with a U(1) x U(1)'-symmetry. The spontaneous break of both gauge symmetry and supersymmetry are thoroughly analysed and the fermion zero-modes are worked out. The role of the gauge-field mixing parameter is elucidated in connection with the string configuration that comes out. As an application of the model presented here, we propose the possibility that the supersimetric cosmic string yield production of fermionic charge carriers that may eject, at their late stages, particles that subsequently decay to produce cosmic rays of ultra-high energy. In our work, it turns out that massive supersymmetric fermionic partners may be produced for a susy breaking scale in the range 10^{11} to 10^{13} GeV, which is compatible with the phenomenology of a gravitino mass at the TeV scale. We also determine the range of the gauge-field mixing parameter, α, in connection with the mass scales of the present model.

Gravitational field around a time-like current-carrying screwed cosmic string in scalar-tensor theories

In this paper we obtain the space-time generated by a time-like current-carrying superconducting screwed cosmic string(TCSCS). This gravitational field is obtained in a modified scalar-tensor theory in the sense that torsion is taken into account. We show that this solution is comptible with a torsion field generated by the scalar field $ϕ$. The analysis of gravitational effects of a TCSCS shows up that the torsion effects that appear in the physical frame of Jordan-Fierz can be described in a geometric form given by contorsion term plus a symmetric part which contains the scalar gradient. As an important application of this solution, we consider the linear perturbation method developed by Zel'dovich, investigate the accretion of cold dark matter due to the formation of wakes when a TCSCS moves with speed $v$ and discuss the role played by torsion. Our results are compared with those obtained for cosmic strings in the framework of scalar-tensor theories without taking torsion into account.

Cosmic optical activity in the spacetime of a scalar-tensor screwed cosmic string

Measurements of radio emission from distant galaxies and quasars verify that the polarization vectors of these radiations are not randomly oriented as naturally expected. This peculiar phenomenon suggests that the spacetime intervening between the source and observer may be exhibiting some sort of optical activity, the origin of which is not known. In the present paper we provide a plausible explanation to this phenomenon by investigating the rôle played by a Chern-Simons-like term in the background of an ordinary or superconducting screwed cosmic string in a scalar-tensor gravity. We discuss the possibility that the excess in polarization of the light from radio-galaxies and quasars can be understood as if the electromagnetic waves emitted by these cosmic objects interact with a scalar-tensor screwed cosmic string through a Chern-Simons coupling. We use current astronomical data to constrain possible values for the coupling constant of this theory, and show that it turns out to be: $λ\sim 10^{-26}$ eV, which is two orders of magnitude larger than in string-inspired theories.

Cosmic String in the Supersymmetric CSKR Theory

We study a cosmic string solution of an N=1-supersymmetric version of the Cremmer-Scherk-Kalb-Ramond (CSKR) Lagrangian coupled to a vector superfield by means of a topological mass term. The 2-form gauge potential is proposed to couple non-minimally to matter, here described by a chiral scalar superfield. The important outcome is that supersymmetry is kept exact both in the core and in the exterior region of the string. We contemplate the bosonic configurations and it can be checked that the solutions saturate the Bogomolnyi bound. A glimpse on the fermionic zero modes is also given.

Screwed superconducting cosmic strings

We show that it is possible to build up a consistent model describing a superconducting cosmic string (SCS) endowed with torsion. A full string solution is obtained by matching the internal and the external solutions. We derive the deficit angle, the geodesics of and the gravitational force on a test-particle moving under the action of this screwed SCS. A couple of potentially observable astrophysical phenomena are highlighted: the dynamics of compact objects orbiting torsioned SCS and the accretion of matter onto it.

Gravitational field around a screwed superconducting cosmic string in scalar-tensor theories

We obtain the solution that corresponds to a screwed superconducting cosmic string (SSCS) in the framework of a general scalar-tensor theory including torsion. We investigate the metric of the SSCS in Brans-Dicke theory with torsion and analyze the case without torsion. We show that in the case with torsion the space-time background presents other properties different from that in which torsion is absent. When the spin vanish, this torsion is a $ϕ$-gradient and then it propagates outside of the string. We investigate the effect of torsion on the gravitational force and on the geodesics of a test-particle moving around the SSCS. The accretion of matter by wakes formation when a SSCS moves with speed $v $ is investigated. We compare our results with those obtained for cosmic strings in the framework of scalar-tensor theory.

Triplectic Gauge Fixing for N=1 Super Yang-Mills Theory

The Sp(2)-gauge fixing of N = 1 super-Yang-Mills theory is considered here. We thereby apply the triplectic scheme, where two classes of gauge-fixing bosons are introduced. The first one depends only on the gauge field, whereas the second boson depends on this gauge field and also on a pair of Majorana fermions. In this sense, we build up the BRST extended (BRST plus antiBRST) algebras for the model, for which the nilpotency relations, s^2_1=s^2_2=s_1s_2+s_2s_1=0, hold.

Superconducting Cosmic String with Propagating Torsion

We show that it is possible to construct a consistent model describing a current-carrying cosmic string endowed with torsion. The torsion contribution to the gravitational force and geodesics of a test-particle moving around the SCCS are analyzed. In particular, we point out two interesting astrophysical phenomena in which the higher magnitude force we derived may play a critical role: the dynamics of compact objects orbiting the torsioned SCCS and accretion of matter onto it. The deficit angle associated to the SCCS can be obtained and compared with data from the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite. We also derived a value for the torsion contribution to matter density fluctuations in the early Universe.

Current-Carrying Cosmic Strings in Scalar-Tensor Gravities

We study the modifications on the metric of an isolated self-gravitating bosonic superconducting cosmic string in a scalar-tensor gravity in the weak-field approximation. These modifications are induced by an arbitrary coupling of a massless scalar field to the usual tensorial field in the gravitational Lagrangian. The metric is derived by means of a matching at the string radius with a most general static and cylindrically symmetric solution of the Einstein-Maxwell-scalar field equations. We show that this metric depends on five parameters which are related to the string's internal structure and to the solution of the scalar field. We compare our results with those obtained in the framework of General Relativity.
