Attempts to measure the magnetic field of the pulsating B star $ν$ Eridani

We report on attempts to measure the magnetic field of the pulsating B star $ν$ Eridani with the Musicos spectropolarimeter attached to the 2m telescope at the Pic du Midi, France. This object is one of the most extensively studied stars for pulsation modes, and the existence of a magnetic field was suggested from the inequality of the frequency separations of a triplet in the stars' oscillation spectrum. We show that the inferred 5-10 kG field was not present during our observations, which cover about one year. We discuss the influence of the strong pulsations on the analysis of the magnetic field strength and set an upper limit to the effective longitudinal field strength and to the field strength for a dipolar configuration. We also find that the observed wind line variability is caused by the pulsations.

GAUDI: a preparatory archive for the COROT mission

The GAUDI database (Ground-based Asteroseismology Uniform Database Interface, http://sdc.laeff.esa.es/gaudi/) is a preparatory archive for the COROT (COnvection, ROtation and planetary Transits, http://www.astrsp-mrs.fr/projets/corot/) mission developed at LAEFF (Laboratory for Space Astrophysics and Theoretical Physics, http://www.laeff.esa.es). Its intention is to make the ground-based observations obtained in the preparation of the asteroseismology programme available in a simple and efficient way. It contains spectroscopic and photometric data together with inferred physical parameters for more than 1500 objects gathered since January 1998 in 6 years of observational campaigns. In this paper, the main functionalities and characteristics of the system are described. The observations have been collected at ESO-La Silla, Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, Observatoire de Haute-Provence, South African Astronomical Observatory, Tautenberg Observatory and Sierra Nevada Observatory.

XMM-Newton observations of MR Vel/RX J0925.7-4758

We report on XMM-Newton observations of the galactic supersoft X-ray source RX J0925.7-4758. The RGS spectrum exhibits a wealth of spectral features from iron and oxygen. XMM-Newton data confirm the finding of previous Chandra HETGS/MEG observations that NLTE models of hot white dwarf atmospheres fail to represent the complex spectrum. There are clear evidences for P Cygni profiles with wind velocities of up to 2000 km/s. Small flux variations with time scales larger than 1000s are present. The strongest power is at ~ 0.21d, a period close to that seen in V band optical light curves. A detailed analysis of the associated changes in the RGS and EPIC pn spectra hint at a mostly grey mechanism suggesting a variation of the visibility of the white dwarf due to occulting material in the accretion disk. Finally, we detect radial velocity changes of 173 +/- 47 km/s between two RGS observations obtained half an orbital cycle apart. The amplitude of the RGS velocity shift is consistent with that of the optical He II 4686 and thus supports the idea that most of the He II optical line emission arises from the accretion disk.
