Evidence for the suppressed decay B^- -> DK^-, D -> K^+π^-π^0

We report a study of the suppressed decay B^- -> DK^-, D -> K^+π^-π^0, where D denotes either a D^0 or a \bar{D}^0 meson. The decay is sensitive to the CP-violating parameter ϕ_3. Using a data sample of 772 x 10^6 B\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector, we measure the ratio of branching fractions of the above suppressed decay to the favored decay B^- -> DK^-, D -> K^-π^+π^0. Our result is R_{DK} = [1.98 +/- 0.62(stat.) +/- 0.24(syst.)] x 10^{-2}, which indicates the first evidence of the signal for this suppressed decay with a significance of 3.2 standard deviations. We measure the direct CP asymmetry between the suppressed B^- and B^+ decays to be A_{DK} = 0.41 +/- 0.30 (stat.) +/- 0.05 (syst.). We also report measurements for the analogous quantities R_{Dπ} and A_{Dπ} for the decay B^- -> Dπ^-, D -> K^+π^-π^0.

Measurement of the $τ$-lepton lifetime at Belle

The lifetime of the $τ$-lepton is measured using the process $e^+e^-\rightarrowτ^+τ^-$, where both $τ$-leptons decay to $3πν_τ$. The result for the mean lifetime, based on $711\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of data collected with the Belle detector at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance and $60\,\mathrm{MeV}$ below, is $τ= (290.17 \pm 0.53(\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.33(\mathrm{syst.}))\cdot10^{-15}\,\mathrm{s}$. The first measurement of the lifetime difference between $τ^+$ and $τ^-$ is performed. The upper limit on the relative lifetime difference between positive and negative $τ$-leptons is $|Δτ| / τ< 7.0 \times 10^{-3}$ at 90% CL.

First Observation of Cabibbo-Suppressed Ξ_c^0 Decays

We report the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed decays $Ξ_c^0\rightarrow Ξ^- K^+$, $Ξ_c^0\raΛK^+ K^-$ and $Ξ_c^0\rightarrow Λϕ$, using a data sample of $711\, \mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We measure the ratios of branching fractions to be $\frac{{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0\ra Ξ^- K^+)}{{\cal B}(Ξ^0_c\raΞ^-π^+)}=(2.75\pm 0.51\pm 0.25)\times 10^{-2}$, $\frac{{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0\raΛK^+ K^-)}{{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0\rightarrowΞ^- π^+)}=(2.86\pm 0.61\pm 0.24)\times 10^{-2}$ and $\frac{{\cal B}(Ξ_c^0\ra Λϕ)}{{\cal B}(Ξ^0_c\raΞ^-π^+)}=(3.43\pm 0.58\pm 0.32)\times 10^{-2}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

The High Time Resolution Universe Survey - IX: Polarimetry of long-period pulsars

We present a polarimetric analysis of 49 long-period pulsars discovered as part of the High Time Resolution Universe (HTRU) southern survey. The sources exhibit the typical characteristics of "old" pulsars, with low fractional linear and circular polarisation and narrow, multicomponent profiles. Although the position angle swings are generally complex, for two of the analysed pulsars (J1622-3751 and J1710-2616) we obtained an indication of the geometry via the rotating vector model. We were able to determine a value of the rotation measure (RM) for 34 of the sources which, when combined with their dispersion measures (DM), yields an integrated magnetic field strength along the line of sight. With the data presented here, the total number of values of RM associated to pulsars discovered during the HTRU southern survey sums to 51. The RMs are not consistent with the hypothesis of a counter-clockwise direction of the Galactic magnetic field within an annulus included between 4 and 6 kpc from the Galactic centre. A partial agreement with a counter-clockwise sense of the Galactic magnetic field within the spiral arms is however found in the area of the Carina-Sagittarius arm.

Evidence for Semileptonic B- to p pbar l nubar Decays

We find evidence for the semileptonic baryonic decay $B^-\to p\bar p\ell^-\barν_\ell$ ($\ell=e,μ$), based on a data sample of 772 million $B\bar B$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. A neural-network based hadronic $B$-meson tagging method is used in this study. The branching fraction of $B^-\to p\bar p\ell^-\barν_\ell$ is measured to be $(5.8^{+2.4}_{-2.1}\textrm{(stat.)}\pm 0.9\textrm{(syst.)})\times 10^{-6}$ with a significance of 3.2$σ$, where lepton universality is assumed. We also estimate the corresponding upper limit: $\mathcal{B}(B^-\to p\bar p\ell^-\barν_\ell) < 9.6\times 10^{-6}$ at the 90% confidence level. This measurement helps constrain the baryonic transition form factor in B decays.

Measurement of $e^+ e^- \to ωπ^0$, $K^{\ast}(892)\bar{K}$ and $K_2^{\ast}(1430)\bar{K}$ at $\sqrt{s}$ near 10.6 GeV

Using data samples of 89 fb$^{-1}$, 703 fb$^{-1}$, and 121 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider at center-of-mass energies 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.876 GeV, respectively, we study the exclusive reactions $e^+e^- \to ωπ^0$, $K^{\ast}(892)\bar{K}$, and $K_2^{\ast}(1430)\bar{K}$ (Charge-conjugate modes are included implicitly). Significant signals of $ωπ^0$, $K^{\ast}(892)^0\bar{K}^0$, and $K_2^{\ast}(1430)^-K^+$ are observed for the first time at these energies, and the energy dependencies of the cross sections are presented. On the other hand, no significant excesses for $K^{\ast}(892)^-K^+$ and $K_2^{\ast}(1430)^0 \bar{K}^0$ are found, and we set limits on the cross section ratios $R_{\rm VP} = \frac{σ_B(e^+e^-\to K^{\ast}(892)^0\bar K^0)} {σ_B(e^+e^-\to K^{\ast}(892)^-K^+)}>$ 4.3, 20.0, and 5.4, and $R_{\rm TP} = \frac{σ_B(e^+e^-\to K_2^{\ast}(1430)^0\bar K^0)} {σ_B(e^+e^-\to K_2^{\ast}(1430)^-K^+)}<$ 1.1, 0.4, and 0.6, for center-of-mass energies of 10.52 GeV, 10.58 GeV, and 10.876 GeV, respectively, at the 90% C.L.

Search for Bottomonium States in Exclusive Radiative Upsilon(2S) Decays

We search for bottomonium states in Upsilon(2S)-> (bb-bar) gamma decays with an integrated luminosity of 24.7fb^-1 recorded at the Upsilon(2S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEK, containing (157.8+-3.6) X 10^6 Upsilon(2S) events. The (bb-bar) system is reconstructed in 26 exclusive hadronic final states composed of charged pions, kaons, protons, and K^0_S mesons. We find no evidence for the state recently observed around 9975 MeV (X_(bb-bar)) in an analysis based on a data sample of 9.3 X 10^6 Upsilon(2S) events collected with the CLEO III detector. We set a 90 % confidence-level upper limit on the branching fraction B[Upsilon(2S)-> X_(bb-bar) gamma] X \sum_i{B[X_(bb-bar)-> h_i]}< 4.9 X 10^-6, summed over the exclusive hadronic final states employed in our analysis. This result is an order of magnitude smaller than the measurement reported with CLEO data. We also set an upper limit for the eta_b(1S) state of B[Upsilon(2S)-> eta_b(1S) gamma] X \sum_i{B[eta_b(1S)-> h_i]}< 3.7 X 10^-6.

Precision measurement of charged pion and kaon differential cross sections in electron-positron annihilation at Q = 10.52 GeV

Measurements of inclusive differential cross sections for charged pion and kaon production in electron-positron annihilation have been carried out at a center-of-mass energy of Q = 10.52 GeV. The measurements were performed with the Belle detector at the KEKB electron-positron collider using a data sample containing 113 million e+e- -> qqbar events, where q={u,d,s,c}. We present charge-integrated differential cross sections dσ_h+-/dz for h+- = pi+-, K+- as a function of the relative hadron energy z = 2*E_h / sqrt{s} from 0.2 to 0.98. The combined statistical and systematic uncertainties for pi+- (K+-) are 4% (4%) at z ~ 0.6 and 15% (24%) at z ~ 0.9. The cross sections are the first measurements of the z-dependence of pion and kaon production for z > 0.7 as well as the first precision cross section measurements at a center-of-mass energy far below the Z^0 resonance used by the experiments at LEP and SLC.

The High Time Resolution Universe Pulsar Survey - VII: discovery of five millisecond pulsars and the different luminosity properties of binary and isolated recycled pulsars

This paper presents the discovery and timing parameters for five millisecond pulsars (MSPs), four in binary systems with probable white dwarf companions and one isolated, found in ongoing processing of the High Time Resolution Universe Pulsar Survey (HTRU). We also present high quality polarimetric data on four of them. These further discoveries confirm the high potential of our survey in finding pulsars with very short spin periods. At least two of these five MSPs are excellent candidates to be included in the Pulsar Timing Array projects. Thanks to the wealth of MSP discoveries in the HTRU survey, we revisit the question of whether the luminosity distributions of isolated and binary MSPs are different. Using the Cordes and Lazio distance model and our new and catalogue flux density measurements, we find that 41 of the 42 most luminous MSPs in the Galactic disk are in binaries and a statistical analysis suggests that the luminosity functions differ with 99.9% significance. We conclude that the formation process that leads to solitary MSPs affects their luminosities, despite their period and period derivatives being similar to those of pulsars in binary systems.

Precise measurement of the branching fractions for Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- and first measurement of the Ds*+ Ds*- polarization using e+e- collisions

We have made a precise measurement of the absolute branching fractions of Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- decays using 121.4 fb-1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment running on the Upsilon(5S) resonance. The results are B(Bs0->Ds+ Ds-) = (0.58 +0.11 -0.09 +-0.13)%, B(Bs0->Ds*+- Ds-+) = (1.8 +-0.2 +-0.4)%, and B(Bs0->Ds*+ Ds*-) = (2.0 +-0.3 +-0.5)%; the sum is B(Bs0->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- = (4.3 +-0.4 +-1.0)%. Assuming Bs->Ds(*)+ Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction constrains the ratio Delta(Gamma_s)/cos(phi_s), where Delta(Gamma_s) is the difference in widths between the two Bs0-Bs0bar mass eigenstates, and phi_s is the CP-violating phase in Bs0-Bs0bar mixing. For phi_s=0 we obtain Delta(Gamma_s)/Gamma_s = 0.090 +-0.009 (stat.) +-0.023 (syst.), where Gamma_s is the mean decay width. We also measure for the first time the longitudinal polarization fraction of Bs->Ds*+ Ds*-; the result is 0.12 +0.30 -0.28 +0.04 -0.05.

A Population of Fast Radio Bursts at Cosmological Distances

Searches for transient astrophysical sources often reveal unexpected classes of objects that are useful physical laboratories. In a recent survey for pulsars and fast transients we have uncovered four millisecond-duration radio transients all more than 40° from the Galactic plane. The bursts' properties indicate that they are of celestial rather than terrestrial origin. Host galaxy and intergalactic medium models suggest that they have cosmological redshifts of 0.5 to 1, and distances of up to 3 gigaparsecs. No temporally coincident x- or gamma-ray signature was identified in association with the bursts. Characterization of the source population and identification of host galaxies offers an opportunity to determine the baryonic content of the Universe.

The High Time Resolution Universe Pulsar Survey VIII: The Galactic millisecond pulsar population

We have used millisecond pulsars (MSPs) from the southern High Time Resolution Universe (HTRU) intermediate latitude survey area to simulate the distribution and total population of MSPs in the Galaxy. Our model makes use of the scale factor method, which estimates the ratio of the total number of MSPs in the Galaxy to the known sample. Using our best fit value for the z-height, z=500 pc, we find an underlying population of MSPs of 8.3(\pm 4.2)*10^4 sources down to a limiting luminosity of L_min=0.1 mJy kpc^2 and a luminosity distribution with a steep slope of d\log N/d\log L = -1.45(\pm 0.14). However, at the low end of the luminosity distribution, the uncertainties introduced by small number statistics are large. By omitting very low luminosity pulsars, we find a Galactic population above L_min=0.2 mJy kpc^2 of only 3.0(\pm 0.7)*10^4 MSPs. We have also simulated pulsars with periods shorter than any known MSP, and estimate the maximum number of sub-MSPs in the Galaxy to be 7.8(\pm 5.0)*10^4 pulsars at L=0.1 mJy kpc^2. In addition, we estimate that the high and low latitude parts of the southern HTRU survey will detect 68 and 42 MSPs respectively, including 78 new discoveries. Pulsar luminosity, and hence flux density, is an important input parameter in the model. Some of the published flux densities for the pulsars in our sample do not agree with the observed flux densities from our data set, and we have instead calculated average luminosities from archival data from the Parkes Telescope. We found many luminosities to be very different than their catalogue values, leading to very different population estimates. Large variations in flux density highlight the importance of including scintillation effects in MSP population studies.

Study of Exclusive B->X_u l nu Decays and Extraction of |V_{ub}| using Full Reconstruction Tagging at the Belle Experiment

We report the results of a study of the exclusive semileptonic decays B->pi0lnu, B->pi+lnu, B->rho0lnu, B->rho+lnu and B->omegalnu, where l represents an electron or a muon. The events are tagged by fully reconstructing a second B meson in the event in a hadronic decay mode. The measured branching fractions are Br(B->pi0lnu) = (0.80 +- 0.08 +- 0.04)x10^-4, Br(B->pi+lnu) = (1.49 +- 0.09 +- 0.07)x10^-4, Br(B->rho0lnu) = (1.83 +- 0.10 +- 0.10)x10^-4, Br(B->rho+lnu) = (3.22 +- 0.27 +- 0.24)x10^-4, and Br(B->omegalnu) =(1.07 +- 0.16 +- 0.07)x10^-4, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. The obtained branching fractions are inclusive of soft photon emission. We also determine the branching fractions as a function of the 4-momentum transfer squared to the leptonic system q^2=(p_l+p_nu)^2, where p_l and p_nu are the lepton and neutrino 4-momenta, respectively. Using the pion modes, a recent LCSR calculation, lattice QCD results and a model-independent description of the hadronic form factor, a value of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}| = (3.52 +- 0.29)x10^-3 is extracted. For the first time, a charmless state with invariant mass greater than 1 GeV/c^2, which might be dominated by the decay B->f2lnu, is observed. These results are obtained from a 711 1/fb data sample that contains 772 millions BB pairs, collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider.

Search for B -> h(*) nu nubar with the full Belle Y(4S) data sample

We report a search for the rare decays B -> h(*) nu nubar, where h(*) stands for K+, Ks0, K*+, K*0, pi+, pi0, rho+, rho0 and phi. The results are obtained from a 711 fb-1 data sample that contains 772 million BB pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. We search for signal candidates by fully reconstructing a hadronic decay of the accompanying B meson and requiring a single h(*) meson left on the signal side. No significant signal is observed and we set upper limits on the branching fractions at 90% confidence level. The measurements of B+ -> K*+ nu nubar, B+ -> pi+ nu nubar, B0 -> pi0 nu nubar and B0 -> rho^0 nu nubar provide the world's currently most restrictive limits.

Measurements of Branching Fractions and Direct CP Asymmetries for B -> K pi, B->pi pi and B->to KK Decays

We report measurements of the branching fractions and direct CP asymmetries (A_{CP}) for B->K pi, pi pi and KK decays (but not pi^0 pi^0) based on the final data sample of 772x10^6 B B-bar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider. We set a 90% confidence-level upper limit for K^+- K^-+ at 2.0x10^{-7}; all other decays are observed with branching fractions ranging from 10^{-6} to 10^{-5}. In the $B^0/B^0-bar -> K^+-π^-+ mode, we confirm Belle's previously reported large A_{CP} with a value of -0.069 +- 0.014 +- 0.007 and a significance of 4.4 sigma. For all other flavor-specific modes, we find A_{CP} values consistent with zero, including A_{CP}(K^+- π^0) = +0.043 +- 0.024 +- 0.007 with 1.8 sigma significance. The difference of CP asymmetry between B^+- -> K^+- pi^0 and B^0/B^0-bar -> K^+-π^-+ is found to be Delta A_{K pi} equiv A_{CP} (K^+ pi^0) - A_{CP}(K^+ pi^-) = +0.112 +- 0.027 +- 0.007 with 4.0 sigma significance. We also calculate the ratios of partial widths for the B-> K pi decays. Using our results, we test the validity of the sum rule A_{CP}(K^+ pi^-) + A_{CP}(K^0π^+) x Gamma(K^0π^+)/Gamma(K^+ pi^-)} - A_{CP}(K^+ pi^0)x 2Gamma(K^+ pi^0)/Gamma(K^+ pi^-) - A_{CP}(K^0 pi^0)x 2Gamma(K^0 pi^0)/Gamma(K^+ pi^-) = 0 and obtain a sum of -0.270 +- 0.132 +- 0.060 with 1.9 sigma significance.

Search for CP Violation in the Decay $D^+\rightarrow K^0_S K^+$

We search for CP violation in the decay $D^+\rightarrow K^0_S K^+$ using a data sample with an integrated luminosity of 977 fb$^{-1}$ collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ asymmetric-energy collider. No CP violation has been observed and the CP asymmetry in $D^+\rightarrow K^0_S K^+$ decay is measured to be $(-0.25\pm0.28\pm0.14)%$, which is the most sensitive measurement to date. After subtracting CP violation due to $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ mixing, the CP asymmetry in $D^+\rightarrow\bar{K}^0 K^+$ decay is found to be $(+0.08\pm0.28\pm0.14)%$.

Measurement of Branching Fraction and First Evidence of CP Violation in B0 --> a1+-(1260) pi-+ Decays

We present a measurement of the branching fraction and time-dependent CP violation parameters in B0 --> a_1^+-(1260) pi^-+ decays. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772x10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We also measure an upper limit on the product branching fraction for a possible decay with the same final state B0 --> a_2^+-(1320) pi^-+. In a time-dependent measurement to extract CP asymmetries, we find evidence of mixing-induced CP violation in B0 --> a_1^+-(1260) pi^-+ decays with a 3.1 sigma significance and the rate where the a_1^+-(1260) does not contain the spectator quark is found to dominate the rate where it does at the 4.1 sigma level. However, there is no evidence for either time and flavor integrated direct CP violation or flavor-dependent direct CP violation.
