A modern study of HD166734: a massive supergiant system

Aims. HD166734 is an eccentric eclipsing binary system composed of two supergiant O-type stars, orbiting with a 34.5-day period. In this rare configuration for such stars, the two objects mainly evolve independently, following single-star evolution so far. This system provides a chance to study the individual parameters of two supergiant massive stars and to derive their real masses. Methods. An intensive monitoring was dedicated to HD166734.We analyzed mid- and high-resolution optical spectra to constrain the orbital parameters of this system. We also studied its light curve for the first time, obtained in the VRI filters. Finally, we disentangled the spectra of the two stars and modeled them with the CMFGEN atmosphere code in order to determine the individual physical parameters. Results. HD166734 is a O7.5If+O9I(f) binary. We confirm its orbital period but we revise the other orbital parameters. In comparison to what we found in the literature, the system is more eccentric and, now, the hottest and the most luminous component is also the most massive one. The light curve exhibits only one eclipse and its analysis indicates an inclination of 63.0° $\pm$ 2.7°. The photometric analysis provides us with a good estimation of the luminosities of the stars, and therefore their exact positions in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. The evolutionary and the spectroscopic masses show good agreement with the dynamical masses of 39.5 Msun for the primary and 33.5 Msun for the secondary, within the uncertainties. The two components are both enriched in helium and in nitrogen and depleted in carbon. In addition, the primary also shows a depletion in oxygen. Their surface abundances are however not different from those derived from single supergiant stars, yielding, for both components, an evolution similar to that of single stars.

Baade's window with APOGEE: Metallicities, ages and chemical abundances

Baade's window (BW) is one of the most observed Galactic bulge fields in terms of chemical abundances. Due to its low and homogeneous interstellar absorption it is considered as a calibration field for Galactic bulge studies. In the era of large spectroscopic surveys, calibration fields such as BW are necessary to cross calibrate the stellar parameters and individual abundances of the APOGEE survey. We use the APOGEE BW stars to derive their metallicity distribution function (MDF) and individual abundances, for $α$- and iron-peak elements of the APOGEE ASPCAP pipeline (DR13), as well as the age distribution for stars in BW. We determine the MDF of APOGEE stars in BW and find a remarkable agreement with that of the Gaia-ESO survey (GES). Both exhibit a clear bimodal distribution. We also find that the Mg-metallicity planes of both surveys agree well, except for the metal-rich part ([Fe/H] >0.1), where APOGEE finds systematically higher Mg abundances with respect to the GES. The ages based on the [C/N] ratio reveal a bimodal age distribution, with a major old population at 10 Gyr, with a decreasing tail towards younger stars. A comparison between APOGEE estimates and stellar parameters, and those determined by other sources reveals detectable systematic offsets, in particular for spectroscopic surface gravity estimates. In general, we find a good agreement between individual abundances of O, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Co, and Ni from APOGEE with that of literature values. We have shown that in general APOGEE data show a good agreement in terms of MDF and individual chemical abundances with respect to literature works. Using the [C/N] ration we found a significant fraction of young stars in BW which is in agreement with the model of Haywood et al. (2016).

Discovery of a Metal-Poor Field Giant with a Globular Cluster Second-Generation Abundance Pattern

We report on detection, from observations obtained with the APOGEE spectroscopic survey, of a metal-poor ([Fe/H] $= -1.3$ dex) field giant star with an extreme Mg-Al abundance ratio ([Mg/Fe] $= -0.31$ dex; [Al/Fe] $= 1.49$ dex). Such low Mg/Al ratios are seen only among the second-generation population of globular clusters, and are not present among Galactic disk field stars. The light element abundances of this star, 2M16011638-1201525, suggest that it could have been born in a globular cluster. We explore several origin scenarios, in particular studying the orbit of the star to check the probability of it being kinematically related to known globular clusters. We performed simple orbital integrations assuming the estimated distance of 2M16011638-1201525 and the available six-dimensional phase-space coordinates of 63 globular clusters, looking for close encounters in the past with a minimum distance approach within the tidal radius of each cluster. We found a very low probability that 2M16011638-1201525 was ejected from most globular clusters; however, we note that the best progenitor candidate to host this star is globular cluster $ω$ Centauri (NGC 5139). Our dynamical investigation demonstrates that 2M16011638-1201525 reaches a distance $|Z_{max}| < 3 $ kpc from the Galactic plane and a minimum and maximum approach to the Galactic center of $R_{min}<0.62$ kpc and $R_{max}<7.26$ kpc in an eccentric ($e\sim0.53$) and retrograde orbit. Since the extreme chemical anomaly of 2M16011638-1201525 has also been observed in halo field stars, this object could also be considered a halo contaminant, likely been ejected into the Milky Way disk from the halo. We conclude that, 2M16011638-20152 is also kinematically consistent with the disk but chemically consistent with halo field stars.

Photometric analysis of the corona during the 20 March 2015 total solar eclipse: density structures, hydrostatic temperatures and magnetic field inference

We present some new accurate CCD photometry analysis of the white light solar corona at the time of the last 20 March 2015 total eclipse (airborne observations on a Falcon 7X and at ground-based Svalbard). We measured coronal brightness profiles taken along radial directions from 1.001 to 3 solar radii in the northern, southern and equatorial regions, after removing the F corona and the sky background. These studies allow to evaluate the density gradients, structures and temperature heterogeneity, by considering the Thomson scattering in white light of the K corona and also emissions of the EUV Fe XII 193A (1 to 2 MK) and Fe XI 171/174 (lower temperature) simultaneously observed by SDO/AIA and SWAP Proba2 space missions. Some dispersion between the regions is noticed. The limitation of the hydrostatic equilibrium assumption in the solar atmosphere is discussed as well as the contribution of the magnetic field pressure gradients as illustrated by a comparison with the model stationary magnetic corona from Predictive Sc. Inc. These results are compared with the results of the quieter 2010 total solar eclipse corona analyzed with the same method. This photometric analysis of the inner and intermediate white light corona will contribute to the preparation of the Aspiics/Proba 3 flying formation future coronagraphic mission of ESA for new investigation at time of artificial eclipses produced in Space. Note that Aspiics will also observe in the He I D3 line at 5876 A, and will record intensities of the Fe XIV line 5303A simultaneously with the analysis of the orange white- light continuum, including precise polarimetry analysis.

Evidence for a physically bound third component in HD 150136

Context. HD150136 is one of the nearest systems harbouring an O3 star. Although this system was for a long time considered as binary, more recent investigations have suggested the possible existence of a third component. Aims. We present a detailed analysis of HD 150136 to confirm the triple nature of this system. In addition, we investigate the physical properties of the individual components of this system. Methods. We analysed high-resolution, high signal-to-noise data collected through multi-epoch runs spread over ten years. We applied a disentangling program to refine the radial velocities and to obtain the individual spectra of each star. With the radial velocities, we computed the orbital solution of the inner system, and we describe the main properties of the orbit of the outer star such as the preliminary mass ratio, the eccentricity, and the orbital-period range. With the individual spectra, we determined the stellar parameters of each star by means of the CMFGEN atmosphere code. Results. We offer clear evidence that HD 150136 is a triple system composed of an O3V((f\ast))-3.5V((f+)), an O5.5-6V((f)), and an O6.5-7V((f)) star. The three stars are between 0-3 Myr old. We derive dynamical masses of about 64, 40, and 35 Msun for the primary, the secondary and the third components by assuming an inclination of 49°. It currently corresponds to one of the most massive systems in our galaxy. The third star moves with a period in the range of 2950 to 5500 d on an outer orbit with an eccentricity of at least 0.3. This discovery makes HD 150136 the first confirmed triple system with an O3 primary star. However, because of the long orbital period, our dataset is not sufficient to constrain the orbital solution of the tertiary component with high accuracy.

Magnetic stars from a FEROS cool Ap star survey

New magnetic Ap stars with split Zeeman components are presented. These stars were discovered from observations with the FEROS spectrograph at the ESO 2.2-m telescope. Fifteen new magnetic stars are analysed here. Several stars with very strong magnetic fields were found, including HD\,70702 with a 15-kG, and HD\,168767 with a 16.5-kG magnetic field strength measured using split Zeeman components of spectral lines and by comparison with synthetic calculations. The physical parameters of the stars were estimated from photometric and spectroscopic data. Together with previously published results for stars with strong magnetic fields, the relationship between magnetic field strength and rotation period is discussed.
