Constraining bright optical counterparts of Fast Radio Bursts

Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) are extremely energetic pulses of millisecond duration and unknown origin. In order to understand the phenomenon that emits these pulses, targeted and untargeted searches have been performed for multi-wavelength counterparts, including the optical. The objective of this work is to search for optical transients at the position of 8 well-localized FRBs, after the arrival of the burst on different time-scales (typically at one day, several months, and one year after FRB detection) in order to compare with known transient optical light curves. We used the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGT), which allows us to promptly take images owing to its network of twenty-three telescopes working around the world. We used a template subtraction technique on all the images we collected at different epochs. We have divided the subtractions into two groups, in one group we use the image of the last epoch as a template and in the other group we use the image of the first epoch as a template. We have searched for bright optical transients at the localizations of the FRBs (<1 arcsec) in the template subtracted images. We have found no optical transients, so we have set limiting magnitudes of optical counterparts. Typical limiting magnitudes in apparent (absolute) magnitudes for our LCOGT data are ~22 (-19) mag in the r-band. We have compared our limiting magnitudes with light curves of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe), type Ia supernovae (SNe), supernovae associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRB SNe), a kilonova, and tidal disruption events (TDEs). We rule out that FRBs are associated with SLSN at a confidence of ~99.9%. We can also rule out the brightest sub-types of type Ia SNe, GRB SNe and TDEs (under some conditions) at similar confidence, though we cannot exclude scenarios where FRBs are associated with the faintest sub-type of each of these transient classes.

Enhanced gauge symmetry and winding modes in Double Field Theory

We provide an explicit example of how the string winding modes can be incorporated in double field theory. Our guiding case is the closed bosonic string compactified on a circle of radius close to the self-dual point, where some modes with non-zero winding or discrete momentum number become massless and enhance the $U(1) \times U(1)$ symmetry to $SU(2) \times SU(2)$. We compute three-point string scattering amplitudes of massless and slightly massive states, and extract the corresponding effective low energy gauge field theory. The enhanced gauge symmetry at the self-dual point and the Higgs-like mechanism arising when changing the compactification radius are examined in detail. The extra massless fields associated to the enhancement are incorporated into a generalized frame with $\frac{O(d+3,d+3)}{O(d+3)\times O(d+3)}$ structure, where $d$ is the number of non-compact dimensions. We devise a consistent double field theory action that reproduces the low energy string effective action with enhanced gauge symmetry. The construction requires a truly non-geometric frame which explicitly depends on both the compact coordinate along the circle and its dual.

Uniqueness of Bogomol'nyi equations and Born-Infeld like supersymmetric theories

We discuss Bogomol'nyi equations for general gauge theories (depending on the two Maxwell invariants $F^{μν} F_{μν}$ and $\tilde F^{μν} F_{μν}$) coupled to Higgs scalars. By analysing their supersymmetric extension, we explicitly show why the resulting BPS structure is insensitive to the particular form of the gauge Lagrangian: Maxwell, Born-Infeld or more complicated non-polynomial Lagrangians all satisfy the same Bogomol'nyi equations and bounds which are dictated by the underlying supersymmetry algebra.

Electrically Charged Vortex Solution in Born-Infeld Theory

We obtain electrically charged vortex solutions for the Born-Infeld Higgs system with a Chern Simons term. We analyse numerically these solutions, comparing their properties with those of ``normal'' Nielsen-Olesen vortices and also show that no charged vortex solutions exist in Born-Infeld theory when the Chern Simons term is absent.

On three dimensional bosonization

We discuss Abelian and non-Abelian three dimensional bosonization within the path-integral framework. We present a systematic approach leading to the construction of the bosonic action which, together with the bosonization recipe for fermion currents, describes the original fermion system in terms of vector bosons.
