Weak-Value Amplification of light deflection by a dark atomic ensemble

We study the coherent propagation of light whose dynamics is governed by the effective Schrödinger equation derived in a magneto-optically-manipulated atomic ensemble with a four-level tripod configuration for electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The small transverse deflection of an optical beam, which is ultra-sensitive to the EIT effect, could be drastically amplified via a weak measurement with an appropriate preselection and postselection of the polarization state. The physical mechanism is explained as the effect of wavepacket reshaping, which results in an enlarged group velocity in the transverse direction.

Coherent control of single photons in the cross resonator arrays via the dark state mechanism

We study the single photon transfer in a hybrid system where the normal modes of two coupled resonator arrays interact with two transition arms of a ?-type atom localized in the intersectional resonator. It is found that, due to the Fano-Feshbach effect based on the dark state of the ?-type atom, the photon transfer in one array can be well controlled by the bound state of the photon in the other array. This conceptual setup could be implemented in some practical cavity QED system to realize a quantum switch for single photon.

Exact Non-Markovian Master Equation and Dispersive Probing of Non-Markovian Process

For a bosonic (fermionic) open system in a bath with many bosons (fermions) modes, we derive the exact non-Markovian master equation in which the memory effect of the bath is reflected in the time dependent decay rates. In this approach, the reduced density operator is constructed from the formal solution of the corresponding Heisenberg equations. As an application of the exact master equation, we study the active probing of non-Markovianity of the quantum dissipation of a single boson mode of electromagnetic (EM) field in a cavity QED system. The non-Markovianity of the bath of the cavity is explicitly reflected by the atomic decoherence factor.

The transition from Quantum Zeno to anti-Zeno effects for a qubit in a cavity by modulating the cavity frequency

We propose a strategy to demonstrate the transition from the quantum Zeno effect (QZE) to the anti-Zeno effect (AZE) by modulating the central frequency of the cavity mode. Our results are obtained without using the rotating wave approximation (RWA), and the initial state (a dressed state) is easy to prepare. When the central frequency of the cavity mode is resonant with the qubit energy level spacing, the normalized decay rate of the qubit is lower than 1, which manifests the QZE. However, when the cavity frequency is detuned from resonance, the normalized decay rate becomes larger than 1, which corresponds to the AZE. The change from the QZE to the AZE, by just varying the central frequency of the cavity mode, should allow to distinguish these two different effects. Moreover, we find that in the presence of both qubit's intrinsic bath and the cavity bath, the emergence of the QZE and the AZE behaviors relies not only on the match between the qubit energy level spacing and the central frequency of the cavity mode, but also on the coupling strength between the qubit and the cavity mode.

Franck-Condon Effect in Central Spin System

We study the quantum transitions of a central spin surrounded by a collective-spin environment. It is found that the influence of the environmental spins on the absorption spectrum of the central spin can be explained with the analog of the Franck-Condon (FC) effect in conventional electron-phonon interaction system. Here, the collective spins of the environment behave as the vibrational mode, which makes the electron to be transitioned mainly with the so-called "vertical transitions" in the conventional FC effect. The "vertical transition" for the central spin in the spin environment manifests as, the certain collective spin states of the environment is favored, which corresponds to the minimal change in the average of the total spin angular momentum.

Superradiant quantum phase transition in a circuit QED system: a revisit from a fully microscopic point of view

In order to examine whether or not the quantum phase transition of Dicke type exists in realistic systems, we revisit the model setup of the superconducting circuit QED from a microscopic many-body perspective based on the BCS theory with pseudo-spin presentation. By deriving the Dicke model with the correct charging terms from the minimum coupling principle, it is shown that the circuit QED system can exhibit superradiant quantum phase transition in the limit N\rightarrow\infty. The critical point could be reached at easiness by adjusting the extra parameters, the ratio of Josephson capacitance C_{J} to gate capacitance C_{g}, as well as the conventional one, the ratio of Josephson energy E_{J} to charging energy E_{C}.

Quantum statistics of the collective excitations of an atomic ensemble inside a cavity

We study the quantum statistical properties of the collective excitations of an atomic ensemble inside a high-finesse cavity. In the large-detuning regime, it is found that the virtual photon exchange can induce a long-range interaction between atoms, which results in correlated excitations. In particular, the atomic blockade phenomenon occurs when the induced long-range interaction effectively suppresses the double atomic excitation, when the average photon number takes certain values, which makes the two nearest energy levels degenerate. We also show that quantum phase transitions occur in the indirectly-interacting atomic ensemble when the average photon number reaches several critical points. In this sense, the quantum statistical properties of the collective excitations are very sensitive to the change of the average photon number. Our model exhibits quantum phase transitions similar to the ones in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. Our proposal could be implemented in a variety of systems including cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), Bose-Einstein condensates, and circuit QED.

A quantum solution to Gibbs Paradox with few particles

We present a fully quantum solution to the Gibbs paradox (GP) with an illustration based on a gedanken experiment with two particles trapped in an infinite potential well. The well is divided into two cells by a solid wall, which could be removed for mixing the particles. For the initial thermal state with correct two-particle wavefunction according to their quantum statistics, the exact calculations shows the entropy changes are the same for boson, fermion and non-identical particles. With the observation that the initial unmixed state of identical particles in the conventional presentations actually is not of a thermal equilibrium, our analysis reveals the quantum origin of the paradox, and confirm the E. J. Jaynes' observation that entropy increase in Gibbs mixing is only due to the including more observables measuring the entropy. To further show up the subtle role of the quantum mechanism in the GP, we study the different finite size effect on the entropy change and shows the works performed in the mixing process are different for various types of particle.

Multi-Particle Quantum Szilard Engine with Optimal Cycles Assisted by a Maxwell's Demon

We present a complete-quantum description of multi-particle Szilard engine which consists of a working substance and a Maxwell's demon. The demon is modeled as a multi-level quantum system with specific quantum control and the working substance consists of identical particles obeying Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac statistics. In this description, a reversible scheme to erase the demon's memory by a lower temperature heat bath is used. We demonstrate that (1) the quantum control of the demon can be optimized for single-particle Szilard engine so that the efficiency of the demon-assisted thermodynamic cycle could reach the Carnot cycle's efficiency; (2) the low-temperature behavior of the working substance is very sensitive to the quantum statistics of the particles and the insertion position of the partition.

Generalized Holstein model for spin-dependent electron transfer reaction

Some chemical reactions are described by electron transfer (ET) processes. The underlying mechanism could be modeled as a polaron motion in the molecular crystal-the Holstein model. By taking spin degrees of freedom into consideration, we generalize the Holstein model (molecular crystal model) to microscopically describe an ET chemical reaction. In our model, the electron spins in the radical pair simultaneously interact with a magnetic field and their nuclear-spin environments. By virtue of the perturbation approach, we obtain the chemical reaction rates for different initial states. It is discovered that the chemical reaction rate of the triplet state demonstrates its dependence on the direction of the magnetic field while the counterpart of the singlet state does not. This difference is attributed to the explicit dependence of the triplet state on the direction when the axis is rotated. Our model may provide a possible candidate for the microscopic origin of avian compass.

Inherent Mach-Zehnder interference with "which-way" detection for single particle scattering in one dimension

We study the coherent transport of single photon in a one-dimensional coupled-resonator-array, "non-locally" coupled to a two-level system. Since its inherent structure is a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we explain the destructive interference phenomenon of the transmission spectrums according to the effect of which-way detection. The quantum realization of the present model is a nano-electromechanical resonator arrays with two nearest resonators coupled to a single spin via their attached magnetic tips. Its classical simulation is a waveguide of coupled defected cavity array with double couplings to a side defected cavity.

Sensitive Chemical Compass Assisted by Quantum Criticality

The radical-pair-based chemical reaction could be used by birds for the navigation via the geomagnetic direction. An inherent physical mechanism is that the quantum coherent transition from a singlet state to triplet states of the radical pair could response to the weak magnetic field and be sensitive to the direction of such a field and then results in different photopigments in the avian eyes to be sensed. Here, we propose a quantum bionic setup for the ultra-sensitive probe of a weak magnetic field based on the quantum phase transition of the environments of the two electrons in the radical pair. We prove that the yield of the chemical products via the recombination from the singlet state is determined by the Loschmidt echo of the environments with interacting nuclear spins. Thus quantum criticality of environments could enhance the sensitivity of the detection of the weak magnetic field.

Dynamics of Quantum Zeno and Anti-Zeno Effects in Open System

We provide a general dynamical approach for the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in an open quantum system under repeated non-demolition measurements. In our approach the repeated measurements are described by a general dynamical model without the wave function collapse postulation. Based on that model, we further study both the short-time and long-time evolutions of the open quantum system under repeated non-demolition measurements, and derive the measurement-modified decay rates of the excited state. In the cases with frequent ideal measurements at zero-temperature, we re-obtain the same decay rate as that from the wave function collapse postulation (Nature {\bf 405}, 546 (2000)). The correction to the ideal decay rate is also obtained under the non-ideal measurements. Especially, we find that the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects are possibly {\it enhanced} by the non-ideal natures of measurements. For the open system under measurements with arbitrary period, we generally derive the rate equation for the long-time evolution for the cases with {\it arbitrary} temperature and noise spectrum, and show that in the long-time evolution the noise spectrum is effectively tuned by the repeated measurements. Our approach is also able to describe the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects given by the phase modulation pulses, as well as the relevant quantum control schemes.

Quantum spin squeezing

This paper reviews quantum spin squeezing, which characterizes the sensitivity of a state with respect to an SU(2) rotation, and is significant for both entanglement detection and high-precision metrology. We first present various definitions of spin squeezing parameters, explain their origin and properties for typical states, and then discuss spin-squeezed states produced with the Ising and the nonlinear twisting Hamiltonians. Afterwards, we explain correlations and entanglement in spin-squeezed states, as well as the relations between spin squeezing and quantum Fisher information, where the latter plays a central role in quantum metrology. We also review the applications of spin squeezing for detecting quantum chaos and quantum phase transitions, as well as the influence of decoherence on spin-squeezed states. Finally, several experiments are discussed including: producing spin squeezed states via particle collisions in Bose-Einstein condensates, mapping photon squeezing onto atomic ensembles, and quantum non-demolition measurements.

Coherent excitation transferring via dark state in light-harvesting process

We study the light absorption and energy transferring in a donor-acceptor system with a bionic structure. In the optimal case with uniform couplings, it is found that the quantum dynamics of this seemingly complicated system is reduced as a three-level system of $Λ$-type. With this observation, we show that the dark state based electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) effect could enhance the energy transfer efficiency, through a quantum interference effect suppressing the excited population of the donors. We estimate the optimal parameters of the system to achieve the maximum output power. The splitting behavior of maximum power may be used to explain the phenomenon that the photosynthesis systems mainly absorb two colors of light.

Analog of Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Effect for Two Nano/Micro-mechanical Resonators Coupled With Spin Ensemble

We study a hybrid nano-mechanical system coupled to a spin ensemble as a quantum simulator to favor a quantum interference effect, the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). This system consists of two nano-mechanical resonators (NAMRs), each of which coupled to a nuclear spin ensemble. It could be regarded as a crucial element in the quantum network of NAMR arrays coupled to spin ensembles. Here, the nuclear spin ensembles behave as a long-lived transducer to store and transfer the NAMRs' quantum information. This system shows the analog of EIT effect under the driving of a probe microwave field. The double-EIT phenomenon emerges in the large $N$ (the number of the nuclei) limit with low excitation approximation, because the interactions between the spin ensemble and the two NAMRs are reduced to the coupling of three harmonic oscillators. Furthermore, the group velocity is reduced in the two absorption windows.

Multi-Atomic Mirror for Perfect Reflection of Single Photons in A Wide Band of Frequency

A resonant two level atom doped in one dimensional waveguide behaves as a mirror, but this single-atom "mirror" can only reflect single photon perfectly at a specific frequency. For a one dimensional coupled-resonator waveguide, we propose to extend the perfect reflection region from a specific frequency to a wide band by placing many atoms individually in the resonators in a finite coordinate region of the waveguide. Such a doped resonator array promises us to control the propagation of a practical photon wave packet with certain momentum distribution instead of a single photon, which is ideally represented by a plane wave with specific momentum. The studies based on the discrete-coordinate scattering theory display that such hybrid structure indeed provides a near-perfect reflection for single photon in a wide band. We also calculated photon group velocity distribution, which shows that the perfect reflection with wide band exactly corresponds to the stopping light region.

Coherent excitation-energy transfer and quantum entanglement in a dimer

We study coherent energy transfer of a single excitation and quantum entanglement in a dimer, which consists of a donor and an acceptor modeled by two two-level systems. Between the donor and the acceptor, there exists a dipole-dipole interaction, which provides the physical mechanism for coherent energy transfer and entanglement generation. The donor and the acceptor couple to two independent heat baths with diagonal couplings that do not dissipate the energy of the non-coupling dimer. Special attention is paid to the effect on single-excitation energy transfer and entanglement generation of the energy detuning between the donor and the acceptor and the temperatures of the two heat baths. It is found that, the probability for single-excitation energy transfer largely depends on the energy detuning in the low temperature limit. Concretely, the positive and negative energy detunings can increase and decrease the probability at the steady state, respectively. In the high temperature limit, however, the effect of the energy detuning on the probability is neglectably small. We also find that the probability is neglectably dependent on the bath temperature difference of the two heat baths. In addition, it is found that quantum entanglement can be generated in the process of coherent energy transfer. As the bath temperature increases, the generated steady state entanglement decreases. For a given bath temperature, the steady-state entanglement decreases with the increasing of the absolute value of the energy detuning.
