Probing Nano-Mechanical QED Effects

We propose and study an "intrinsic probing" approach, without introducing any external detector, to mimic cavity QED effects in a qubit-nanomechanical resonator system. This metallic nanomechanical resonator can act as an intrinsic detector when a weak driving current passes through it. The nanomechanical resonator acts as both the cavity and the detector. A cavity QED-like effect is demonstrated by the correlation spectrum of the electromotive force between the two ends of the nanomechanical resonator. Using the quantum regression theorem and perturbation theory, we analytically calculate the correlation spectrum. In the weak driving limit, we study the effect on the vacuum Rabi splitting of both the strength of the driving as well as the frequency-detuning between the charge qubit and the nanomechanical resonator. Numerical calculations confirm the validity of our intrinsic probing approach.

Controlling soliton excitations in Heisenberg spin chain through magic angle

We study the nonlinear dynamics of collective excitation in a $N$-site $XXZ$ quantum spin chain, which is manipulated by an oblique magnetic field. We show that, when the tilted field is applied along the magic angle $θ_{0} =\pm\arccos \sqrt{1/3}$, the anisotropic Heisenberg spin chain becomes isotropic and thus an free propagating spin wave is stimulated. And in the regime of the tilted angle larger and smaller then the magic angle, two types of nonlinear excitations appear, which are bright soliton and dark soliton.

Birefringence lens effects of atom ensemble enhanced by electromagnetically induced transparency

We study the optic control for birefringence of a polarized light by an atomic ensemble with a tripod configuration, which is mediated by the electromagnetically induced transparency with a spatially inhomogeneous laser. The atom ensemble splits the linearly polarized light ray into two orthogonally-polarized components, whose polarizations depend on quantum superposition of the initial states of the atom ensemble. Accompanied with this splitting, the atom ensemble behaves as a birefringent lens, which allows one polarized light ray passing through straightly while focus another orthogonal to this polarization with finite aberration of focus.

Quantum super-cavity with atomic mirrors

We study single-photon transport in an array of coupled microcavities where two two-level atomic systems are embedded in two separate cavities of the array. We find that a single-photon can be totally reflected by a single two-level system. However, two separate two-level systems can also create, between them, single-photon quasi-bound states. Therefore, a single two-level system in the cavity array can act as a mirror while a different type of cavity can be formed by using two two-level systems, acting as tunable "mirrors", inside two separate cavities in the array. In analogy with superlattices in solid state, we call this new "cavity inside a coupled-cavity array" a super-cavity. This supercavity is the quantum analog of Fabry-Perot interferometers. Moreover, we show that the physical properties of this quantum super-cavity can be adjusted by changing the frequencies of these two-level systems.

Two Mode Photon Bunching Effect as Witness of Quantum Criticality in Circuit QED

We suggest a scheme to probe critical phenomena at a quantum phase transition (QPT) using the quantum correlation of two photonic modes simultaneously coupled to a critical system. As an experimentally accessible physical implementation, a circuit QED system is formed by a capacitively coupled Josephson junction qubit array interacting with one superconducting transmission line resonator (TLR). It realizes an Ising chain in the transverse field (ICTF) which interacts with the two magnetic modes propagating in the TLR. We demonstrate that in the vicinity of criticality the originally independent fields tend to display photon bunching effects due to their interaction with the ICTF. Thus, the occurrence of the QPT is reflected by the quantum characteristics of the photonic fields.

Photonic Feshbach Resonance

Hermann Feshbach predicted fifty years ago that when two atomic nuclei are scattered within an open entrance channel-- the state observable at infinity, they may enter an intermediate closed channel -- the locally bounded state of the nuclei. If the energy of a bound state of in the closed channel is fine-tuned to match the relative kinetic energy, then the open channel and the closed channel "resonate", so that the scattering length becomes divergent. We find that this so-called Feshbach resonance phenomenon not only exists during the collisions of massive particles, but also emerges during the coherent transport of massless particles, that is, photons confined in the coupled resonator arrays \cite{lzhou08}. We implement the open and the closed channels inside a pair of such arrays, linked by a separated cavity or a tunable qubit. When a single photon is bounded inside the closed channel by setting the relevant physical parameters appropriately, the vanishing transmission appears to display this photonic Feshbach resonance. The general construction can be implemented through various experimentally feasible solid state systems, such as the couple defected cavities in photonic crystals. The numerical simulation based on finite-different time-domain(FDTD) method confirms our conceive about physical implementation.

Indirect control of quantum system via accessor: pure coherent control without system excitation

A pure indirect control of quantum systems via quantum accessor is investigated. In this control scheme, we do not apply any external classical excitation fields on the controlled system and we control a quantum system via a quantum accessor and classical control fields control the accessor only. Complete controllability is investigated for arbitrary finite dimensional quantum systems and exemplified by 2 and 3 dimensional systems. The scheme exhibits some advantages; it uses less qubits in accessor and does not depend on the energy-level structure of the controlled system.

Discrete Coordinate Scattering Approach to Nano-optical Resonance

In this letter, we investigate the coherent tunneling process of photons between a defected circular resonator and a waveguide based on the recently developed discrete coordinate scattering methods (L. Zhou et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 100501 (2008)). We show the detailed microscopic mechanism of the tunneling and present a simple model for defect coupling in the resonator. The Finite-Difference Time-Domain(FDTD) numerical results is explored to illustrate the analysis results.

Quantum Optomechanics with Single Atom

The recently increasing explorations for cavity optomechanical coupling assisted by a single atom or an atomic ensemble have opened an experimentally accessible fashion to interface quantum optics and nano (micro) -mechanical systems. In this paper, we study in details such composite quantum dynamics of photon, phonon and atoms, specified by the triple coupling, which only exists in this triple hybrid system: The cavity QED system with a movable end mirror. We exactly diagonalize the Hamiltonian of the triple hybrid system under the parametric resonance condition. We find that, with the rotating-wave approximation, the hybrid system is modeled by a generalized spin-orbit coupling where the orbital angular momentum operator is defined through a Jordan-Schwinger realization with two bosonic modes, corresponding to the mirror oscillation and the single mode photon of the cavity. In the quasi-classical limit of very large angular momentum, this system will behave like a standard cavity-QED system described by the Jaynes-Cummings model as the angular momentum operators are transformed to bosonic operators of a single mode. We test this observation with an experimentally accessible system with the atom in the cavity with a moving mirror.

Controllable scattering of photons inside a one-dimensional resonator waveguide

We analyze coherent transport of photons, which propagate in a one-dimensional coupled-resonator waveguide (CRW) and are scattered by a controllable two-level system located inside the CRW. Our approach, which uses discrete coordinates, unifies "low" and "high" energy effective theories for single photon scattering. We show that the controllable two-level system can behave as a quantum switch for the coherent transport of photons. This study may inspire new electro-optical single-photon quantum devices. We also suggest an experimental setup based on superconducting transmission line resonators and qubits

Controlling Quasibound States in 1D Continuum Through Electromagnetic Induced Transparency Mechanism

We study the coherent scattering process of a single photon confined in an one-dimensional (1D) coupled cavity-array, where a $Λ$-type three-level atom is placed inside one of the cavities in the array and behaves as a functional quantum node (FQN). We show that, through the electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) mechanism, the $Λ$-type FQN bears complete control over the reflection and transmission of the incident photon along the cavity-array. We also demonstrate the emergence of a quasibound state of the single photon inside a secondary cavity constructed by two distant FQN's as two end mirrors, from which we are motivated to design an all-optical single photon storage device of quantum coherence.

Observable Topological Effects of Mobius Molecular Devices

We study the topological properties of quantum states for the spinless particle hopping in a Mobius ladder. This system can be regarded as a molecular device possibly engineered from the aromatic Mobius annulenes, which enjoys a pseudo-spin orbital interaction described by a non-Abelian gauge structure. It results from the nontrivial topology of configuration space, and results in various observable effects, such as optical spectral splitting. The transmission spectrum through the Mobius molecular device is calculated to demonstrate a topological effect as a destructive interferences in the conduction band. The induced interaction also leads to an entanglement between the transverse and longitudinal modes for any locally factorized state.

Magneto-Optical Stern-Gerlach Effect in Atomic Ensemble

We study the birefringence of the quantized polarized light in a magneto-optically manipulated atomic ensemble as a generalized Stern-Gerlach Effect of light. To explain this engineered birefringence microscopically, we derive an effective Shrödinger equation for the spatial motion of two orthogonally polarized components, which behave as a spin with an effective magnetic moment leading to a Stern-Gerlach split in an nonuniform magnetic field. We show that electromagnetic induced transparency (EIT) mechanism can enhance the magneto-optical Stern-Gerlach effect of light in the presence of a control field with a transverse spatial profile and a inhomogeneous magnetic field.

Microscopic Work Distribution of Small System in Quantum Isothermal Process

For a two-level quantum mechanical system, we derive microscopically the exact expression for the fluctuation of microscopic work in a multi-step non-equilibrium process, and we rigorously prove that in an isothermal process, the fluctuation is vanishingly small, and the most probabilistic work just equals to the difference of the free energy. Our study demonstrates that the convergence of the microscopic work in the isothermal process is due to the nature of isothermal process rather than usual thermodynamic limit condition. Our investigation justifies the validity of "minimum work principle" formulation of the second law even for a small system far from thermodynamic limit.

Quantum noise theory for quantum transport through nanostructures

We develop a quantum noise approach to study quantum transport through nanostructures. The nanostructures, such as quantum dots, are regarded as artificial atoms, subject to quasi-equilibrium fermionic reservoirs of electrons in biased leads. Noise operators characterizing the quantum fluctuation in the reservoirs are related to the damping and fluctuation of the artificial atoms through the quantum Langevin equation. The average current and current noise are derived in terms of the reservoir noise correlations. In the white-noise limit, we show that the current and current noise can be exactly calculated by the quantum noise approach, even in the presence of interaction such as Coulomb blockade. As a typical application, the average current and current noise through a single quantum dot are studied.

Induced Entanglement Enhanced by Quantum Criticality

Two qubit entanglement can be induced by a quantum data bus interacting with them. In this paper, with the quantum spin chain in the transverse field as an illustration of quantum data bus, we show that such induced entanglement can be enhanced by the quantum phase transition (QPT) of the quantum data bus. We consider two external spins simultaneously coupled to a transverse field Ising chain. By adiabatically eliminating the degrees of the chain, the effective coupling between these two spins are obtained. The matrix elements of the effective Hamiltonian are expressed in terms of dynamical structure factor (DSF) of the chain. The DSF is the Fourier transformation of the Green function of Ising chain and can be calculated numerically by a method introduced in [O. Derzhko, T. Krokhmalskii, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{56}, 11659 (1997)]. Since all characteristics of QPT are embodied in the DSF, the dynamical evolution of the two external spins displays singularity in the vicinity of the critical point.

Intrinsic Cavity QED and Emergent Quasi-Normal Modes for Single Photon

We propose a special cavity design that is constructed by terminating a one-dimensional waveguide with a perfect mirror at one end and doping a two-level atom at the other. We show that this atom plays the intrinsic role of a semi-transparent mirror for single photon transports such that quasi-normal modes (QNM's) emerge spontaneously in the cavity system. This atomic mirror has its reflection coefficient tunable through its level spacing and its coupling to the cavity field, for which the cavity system can be regarded as a two-end resonator with a continuously tunable leakage. The overall investigation predicts the existence of quasi-bound states in the waveguide continuum. Solid state implementations based on a dc-SQUID circuit and a defected line resonator embedded in a photonic crystal are illustrated to show the experimental accessibility of the generic model.

Cavity optomechanical coupling assisted by an atomic gas

We theoretically study a cavity filled with atoms, which provides the optical-mechanical interaction between the modified cavity photonic field and a movable mirror at one end. We show that the cavity field ``dresses'' these atoms, producing two types of polaritons, effectively enhancing the radiation pressure of the cavity field upon the end mirror, as well as establishing an additional squeezing mode of the end mirror. This squeezing produces an adiabatic entanglement, which is absent in usual vacuum cavities, between the oscillating mirror and the rest of the system. We analyze the entanglement and quantify it using the Loschmidt echo and fidelity.
