Elliptic flow at RHIC and LHC in the string percolation approach

The percolation of strings gives a good description of the RHIC experimental data on the elliptic flow, v2 and predicted a rise on the integrated v2 of the order of 25% at LHC such as it has been experimentally obtained. We show that the dependence of v2 on pT for RHIC and LHC energies is approximately the same as it has been observed, for all the centralities. We show the results for different particles and the dependence of v2 on the centralities and rapidity. Our results are compatible with an small value of the ratio eta/s in the whole energy range such as it was expected in the percolation framework.

Rapidity long range correlations, parton percolation and color glass condensate

The similarities between string percolation and Glasma results are emphasized, special attention being paid to rapidity long range correlations, ridge structure and elliptic flow. As the string density of high multiplicity pp collisions at LHC energies has similar value as the corresponding to Au-Au semi-central collisions at RHIC we also expect in pp collisions long rapidity correlations and ridge structure, extended more than 8 units in rapidity.

String Percolation and the Glasma

We compare string percolation phenomenology to Glasma results on particle rapidity densities, effective string or flux tube intrinsic correlations, the ridge phenomena and long range forward-backward correlations. Effective strings may be a tool to extend the Glasma to the low density QCD regime. A good example is given by the minimum of the negative binomial distribution parameter k expected to occur at low energy/centrality.

Strong color fields and heavy flavor production

The clustering of color sources provides a natural framework for soft partonic interactions producing strong color fields. We study the consequences of these color fields in the production of heavy flavor and the behavior of the nuclear modification factor.

Elliptic flow from color strings

It is shown that the elliptic flow can be successfully described in the color string picture with fusion and percolation provided anisotropy of particle emission from the fused string is taken into account. Two possible sources of this anisotropy are considered, propagation of the string in the transverse plane and quenching of produced particles in the strong color field of the string. Calculations show that the second source gives an overwhelming contribution to the flow at accessible energies.

Elliptic flow: pseudorapidity and number of participants dependence

We discuss the elliptic flow dependence on pseudorapidity and number of participating nucleons in the framework of string percolation, and argue that the geometry of the initial overlap region of interaction, projected in the impact parameter plane, determines the experimentally measured azimuthal asymmetries. We found good agreement with data.

Long range correlations, event simulation and parton percolation

We study the RHIC data on long range rapidity correlations, comparing their main trends with different string model simulations. Particular attention is paid to color percolation model and its similarities with color glass condensate. As both approaches corresponds, at high density, to a similar physical picture, both of them give rise to a similar behavior on the energy and the centrality of the main observables. Color percolation explains the transition from low density to high density.

Pomeron and Odderon Contributions at LHC Energies

We consider the first LHC data for pp collisions in the framework of Regge theory. The integral cross sections and inclusive densities of secondaries are determined by the Pomeron exchange, and we present the corresponding predictions for them. The first measurements of inclusive densities in midrapidity region are in agreement with these predictions. The possible contribution of Odderon (Reggeon with alpha(Odd)(0) ~ 1 and negative signature) exchange to the differences in the inclusive spectra of particle and antiparticle in the central region could be significant at LHC energies. The first data of ALICE Collaboration are consistent with a very small Odderon contribution. Probably, further LHC data will definitely settle the question of the Odderon existence.

Particle production azimuthal asymmetries in a clustering of color sources model

The collective interactions of many partons in the first stage of the collisions is the usual accepted explanation of the sizable elliptical flow. The clustering of color sources provides a framework of partonic interactions. In this scheme, we show a reasonable agreement with RHIC data for pT<1.5 GeV/c in both the dependence of v2 transverse momentum and in the shape of the nuclear modified factor on the azimuthal angle for different centralities. We show the predictions at LHC energies for Pb-Pb. In the case of proton-proton collisions a sizable v2 is obtained at this energy.

Heavy Flavour Production in pp and Heavy Ion Collisions in QCD Up to LHC Energies

Charm production in pp collisions is considered in the framework of perturbative QCD. The values of two parameters, the charm quark mass $m_c$ and the QCD scale mu^2, are determined from the comparison of the theoretical calculations with experimental data. The RHIC data on charm and beauty production are compared with the k_T-factorization approach predictions and with standard NLO QCD. The calculated results underestimate the STAR Collaboration data. The role of possible nuclear effects is discussed. The predictions for LHC energies are also given.

Nuclear like effects in proton-proton collisions at high energy

We show that several effects considered nuclear effects are not nuclear in the sense that they do not only occur in nucleus-nucleus and hadron-nucleus collisions but, as well, they are present in hadron-hadron (proton-proton) collisions. The matter creation mechanism in hh, hA and AA collisions is always the same. The pT suppression of particles produced in large multiplicity events compared to low multiplicity events, the elliptic flow and the Cronin effect are predicted to occur in pp collisions at LHC energies as a consequence of the obtained high density partonic medium.

Medium dependence of multiplicity distributions in MLLA

We study the modification of the multiplicity distributions in MLLA due to the presence of a QCD medium. The medium is introduced though a multiplicative constant ($f_{med}$) in the soft infrared parts of the kernels of QCD evolution equations. Using the asymptotic ansatz for quark and gluons mean multiplicities $ =e^{γy}$ and $ =r^{-1}e^{γy}$ respectively, we study two cases: fixed $γ$ as previously considered in the literature, and fixed $α_s$. We find opposite behaviors of the dispersion of the multiplicity distributions with increasing $f_{med}$ in both cases. For fixed $γ$ the dispersion decreases, while for fixed $α_s$ it increases.

Fluctuations and Transverse Momentum Distributions in the Color Clustering Approach

We present our results on transverse momentum fluctuations, multiplicity fluctuations and transverse momentum distributions for baryons and mesons in the framework of the clustering of color sources. We determine under what conditions the initial state configurations can lead to color connection, and more specifically, if variations of the initial state can lead to a transition from disconnected to connected color clusters, modifying the number of effective sources. We find that beyond a critical point, one has a condensate, containing interacting and hence color-connected sources. This point thus specifies the onset of color deconfinement. We show that the transverse momentum and multiplicity distributions are related to each other in a defined way. We obtain a non-monotonic dependence of the $p_T$ and multiplicity fluctuations with the number of participants. We present our results for the fluctuations and the transverse momentum distributions at RHIC energies compared to the existing experimental data and our predictions for LHC energies.

Production of Secondaries in pp Collisions at RHIC Energies

The midrapidity inclusive densities of different secondaries are calculated in the framework of the Quark-Gluon String Model. The transfer of baryon number in rapidity space due to the gluon string junction propagation leads to a significant effect on the net baryon production. The numerical results are in reasonable agreement with RHIC experimental data.

Strong colour fields and cosmic ray showers at ultra-high energies

We argue that the increase of the ratio baryon/meson due to the presence of strong colour fields and percolation in ultra-high energy hadronic collisions, helps to explain some of the global features of ultra-high energy cosmic ray cascades at E>10^18 eV and, in particular the observed excess in the number of muons with respect to current models of hadronic interactions. A reasonable agreement with the small value and slope of the average depth of shower maximum Xmax vs shower energy -- as seen in data collected at the Pierre Auger Observatory -- can be obtained with a fast increase of the p-Air production cross-section compatible with the Froissart bound.

Production of Secondaries in High Energy d+Au Collisions

In the framework of Quark-Gluon String Model we calculate the inclusive spectra of secondaries produced in d+Au collisions at intermediate (CERN SPS) and at much higher (RHIC) energies. The results of numerical calculations at intermediate energies are in reasonable agreement with the data. At RHIC energies numerically large inelastic screening corrections (percolation effects) should be accounted for in calculations. We extract these effects from the existing RHIC experimental data on minimum bias and central d+Au collisions. The predictions for p+Au interactions at LHC energy are also given.

Universal behavior of baryons and mesons transverse momentum distributions in the framework of percolation of strings

In the framework of percolation of strings, the transverse momentum distributions in AA and hh collisions at all centralities and energies follow a universal behavior. The width of these distributions is related to the width of the distribution of the size of the clusters formed from the overlapping of the produced strings. The difference between the distributions for baryons and mesons originates in the fragmentation of clusters of several strings which enhance the particles with higher number of constituents. The results agree with SPS and RHIC data. The predictions for LHC show differences for baryons compared with RHIC. At LHC energies we obtain also a high pt suppression for pp high multiplicity events compared with pp minimum bias.
