Smooth Hybrid Inflation

We propose a variant of hybrid inflation which is applicable in a wide class of supersymmetric grand unified models. The observed temperature perturbations of cosmic background radiation can be reproduced with natural values of the parameters of the theory and a grand unification scale which is consistent with the unification of the minimal supersymmetric standard model gauge couplings as measured at LEP. The termination of inflation is smooth and does not produce any topological defects. Finally, we present a specific supersymmetric model where our smooth hybrid inflationary scenario is realized.

A SUSY SO(10) Model with Large $tan β$

We construct a supersymmetric SO(10) model with the asymptotic relation tan$β\simeq m_t/m_b$ automatically arising from its structure. The model retains the significant Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model predictions for $sin^2 θ_w$ and $α_s$ and contains an automatic $Z_2$ matter parity. Proton decay through $d=5$ operators is sufficiently suppressed. It is remarkable that no global symmetries need to be imposed on the model.

MSSM and Large $tanβ$ from SUSY Trinification

We construct a supersymmetric model based on the semi-simple gauge group $SU(3)_c \times SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R$ with the relation $tanβ\simeq m_t/m_b$ automatically arising from its structure. The model below a scale $\sim 10^{16}$ GeV gives naturally rise just to the minimal supersymmetric standard model and therefore to the presently favored values for $sin^2 θ_w$ and $α_s$ without fields in representations higher than the fundamental.

MSSM from SUSY Trinification

We construct a $SU(3)^3$ supersymmetric gauge theory with a common gauge coupling g. Spontaneous breaking of this gauge group at a scale $M_X=1.3\times10^{16} $GeV gives naturally rise exactly to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model $(MSSM)$ and consequently to the experimentally favored values of $sin^2θ_w$ and $α_s$.The gauge hierarchy problem is naturally solved by a missing-partner-type mechanism which works to all orders in the superpotential. The baryon asymmetry can be generated in spite of the (essential) stability of the proton. The solar neutrino puzzle is solved by the MSW mechanism. The LSP is a natural "cold" dark matter candidate and "hot" dark matter might consist of $τ$-neutrinos. This model could be thought of as an effective $4d$ theory emerging from a more fundamental theory at a scale $M_c=M_P/\sqrt{8π}$ where $a_G\equiv{g^2\over{4π}}$ happens to be equal to unity.

Large $tan β$ from $SU(2)_R$ Gauge Symmetry

Sufficient conditions for the relation $tan β\simeq m_t/m_b$ to hold in supersymmetric grand unified theories are formulated. Essential ingredients are the $SU(2)_R$ gauge symmetry and a discrete matter parity. The applicability of our conditions is illustrated by specific examples. Implications for neutrino masses are discussed.

Supersymmetric Unification without Proton Decay

We present a supersymmetric grand unification scheme based on the gauge group SU(3)_c X SU(3)_L X SU(3)_R in which the proton and the lightest supersymmetric particle are stable, neutrinos are necessarily massive, and the observed baryon asymmetry originates in the lepton sector. Such models are also consistent with the measured value of sin^2Θ_W as well as unification of the gauge couplings.
