Breakdown of the Fermi liquid theory in heavy fermion compounds

We review the anomalous properties of heavy fermion compounds like CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ or CeMIn$_5$ close to a zero temperature phase transition called a quantum critical point. Anomalous behavior of the resistivity, specific heat and magnetic properties observed in various compounds suggests a fundamental breakdown of the Fermi liquid theory. Recent measurements on YbRh$_2$Si$_2$, field-tuned through the quantum critical point, provide interesting insights on the evolution of the Fermi liquid close to criticality. We discuss the possibility of a kind of spin-charge separation at the quantum critical point and make some remarks about its possible link with the underscreened Kondo model.

Quasiparticle Formation and Optical Sum Rule Violation in Cuprate Superconductors

Using a simple model for the frequency dependent scattering rate, we evaluate the in-plane optical integral for cuprate superconductors in the normal and superconducting states. In the overdoped region, this integral is conserved. In the optimal and underdoped region, though, the optical integrals differ, implying a lowering of the in-plane kinetic energy in the superconducting state. This sum rule violation, due to the difference of the non Fermi liquid normal state and the superconducting Fermi liquid state, has a magnitude comparable to recent experimental results.

Supersymmetric approach to the infinite U Hubbard Model

We present a preliminary discussion on the use of supersymmetric representation of the Hubbard operator which unifies the slave boson and slave fermion representations into a single $U (1)\times SU (1| 1)$ gauge theory to treat the physics of the infinite U Hubbard model. By looking for solutions to the Hamiltonian in which the spins can exist as both condensed ordered moments and as mobile charged carriers, we examine the possibility of a Nagaoka ferromagnetic phase at finite doping with a quantum critical point into the paramagnetic phase.

What is the fate of the heavy electron at a quantum critical point?

A growing body of evidence suggests that the quantum critical behavior at the onset of magnetism in heavy fermion systems can not be understood in terms of a simple quantum spin density wave. This talk will discuss the consequences of this conclusion, touching on its possible implications in the realm of two dimensional systems and outlining current theoretical and experimental efforts to characterize the nature of the critical point in heavy fermion materials.

How do Fermi liquids get heavy and die?

We discuss non-Fermi liquid and quantum critical behavior in heavy fermion materials, focussing on the mechanism by which the electron mass appears to diverge at the quantum critical point. We ask whether the basic mechanism for the transformation involves electron diffraction off a quantum critical spin density wave, or whether a break-down in the composite nature of the heavy electron takes place at the quantum critical point. We show that the Hall constant changes continously in the first scenario, but may ``jump'' discontinuously at a quantum critical point where the composite character of the electron quasiparticles changes.

Supersymmetric Hubbard Operators

We develop a supersymmetric representation of the Hubbard operator which unifies the slave boson and slave fermion representations into a single $U (1)\times SU (1| 1)$ gauge theory, a group with larger symmetry than the product of two $U (1)$ gauge groups. These representations of the Hubbard operator can be used to incorporate strong Hund's interactions in multi-electron atoms as a constraint. We show how this method can be combined with the $SP (N)$ group to yield a locally supersymmetric large-N formulation of the $t-J$ model.

Strong Coupling Approach to the Supersymmetric Kondo Model

We carry out the strong coupling expansion for the SU(N) Kondo model where the impurity spin is represented by a L-shaped Young tableau. Using second order perturbation theory around the strong coupling fixed point it is shown that when the antisymmetric component of the Young-tableau contains more than N/2 entries, the strong-coupling fixed point becomes unstable to a two-stage Kondo effect. By comparing the strong coupling results obtained here with the result using a supersymmetric large N expansion, we are also able to confirm the validity of the the supersymmetric formalism for mixed symmetry Kondo models.

Supersymmetric spin operators

We develop a supersymmetric representation of spin operators which unifies the Schwinger and Abrikosov representations of SU(N) spin operators, allowing a second-quantized treatment of representations of the SU(N) group with both symmetric and antisymmetric character. By applying this to the SU(N) Kondo model, we show that it is possible to develop a controlled treatment of both Magnetism and the Kondo effect within a single large N expansion.

Dynamic Spin Correlation Function near the Antiferromagnetic Quantum Phase Transition of Heavy-Fermions

The dynamical spin susceptibility is studied in the magnetically-disordered phase of heavy-Fermion systems near the antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition. In the framework of the $S=1/2$ Kondo lattice model, we introduce a perturbative expansion treating the spin and Kondo-like degrees of freedom on an equal footing. The dynamical spin susceptibility displays a two-component behaviour in agreement with the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments performed in $CeCu_{6}$, $Ce_{1-x}La_{x}Ru_{2}Si_{2}$ and $UPt_{3}$: a quasielastic q-independent peak as in a Fermi liquid theory, and a strongly q-dependent inelastic peak typical of a non-Fermi liquid behaviour. Very strikingly, the position of the inelastic peak is found to be pushed to zero at the antiferromagnetic transition. The picture is consistent with the neutron cross sections observed in INS experiments.

Supersymmetric Approach to Heavy-Fermion Systems

We present a new supersymmetric approach to the Kondo lattice model in order to describe simultaneously the quasiparticle excitations and the low-energy magnetic fluctuations in heavy-Fermion systems. This approach mixes the fermionic and the bosonic representation of the spin following the standard rules of superalgebra. Our results show the formation of a bosonic band within the hybridization gap reflecting the spin collective modes. The density of states at the Fermi level is strongly renormalized while the Fermi surface sum rule includes $n_{c}+1$ states. The dynamical susceptibility is made of a Fermi liquid superimposed on a localized magnetism contribution.

Spin Dynamics near the Quantum Critical Point of Heavy-Fermions

The dynamical spin susceptibility is studied in the magnetically-disordered phase of heavy-Fermion systems near the antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition. In the framework of the $S=1/2$ Kondo lattice model, we introduce a perturbative expansion treating the spin and Kondo-like degrees of freedom on an equal footing. The general expression of the dynamical spin susceptibility that we derive presents a two-component behaviour: a quasielastic peak as in a Fermi liquid theory, and a strongly q-dependent inelastic peak typical of a non-Fermi liquid behaviour. Very strikingly, the position of the inelastic peak is found to be pushed to zero at the antiferromagnetic transition with a vanishing relaxation rate. The comparison has been quantitatively made with Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS) experiments performed in $CeCu_{6}$ and $Ce_{1-x}La_{x}Ru_{2}Si_{2}$. The excellent agreement that we have found gives strong support to a two-band model with new prospects for the study of the quantum critical phenomena in the vicinity of the magnetic phase transition.
