Unusual electronic and vibrational properties in the colossal thermopower material FeSb$_2$

The iron antimonide FeSb$_2$ possesses an extraordinarily high thermoelectric power factor at low temperature, making it a leading candidate for cryogenic thermoelectric cooling devices. However, the origin of this unusual behavior is controversial, having been variously attributed to electronic correlations as well as the phonon-drag effect. The optical properties of a material provide information on both the electronic and vibrational properties. The optical conductivity reveals an anisotropic response at room temperature; the low-frequency optical conductivity decreases rapidly with temperature, signalling a metal-insulator transition. One-dimensional semiconducting behavior is observed along the $b$ axis at low temperature, in agreement with first-principle calculations. The infrared-active lattice vibrations are also symmetric and extremely narrow, indicating long phonon relaxation times and a lack of electron-phonon coupling. Surprisingly, there are more lattice modes along the $a$ axis than are predicted from group theory; several of these modes undergo significant changes below about 100 K, hinting at a weak structural distortion or phase transition. While the extremely narrow phonon line shapes favor the phonon-drag effect, the one-dimensional behavior of this system at low temperature may also contribute to the extraordinarily high thermopower observed in this material.

Fermi surface reconstruction and dimensional topology change in Nd-doped CeCoIn$_5$

We performed low-temperature de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect measurements on a Ce$_{1-x}$Nd$_x$CoIn$_5$ series, for x = 0.02, 0.05, 0.1, and 1, down to T = 40 mK using torque magnetometry in magnetic felds up to 35 T. Our results indicate that a Fermi-surface (FS) reconstruction occurs from a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) topology for Nd-2% to a rather three-dimensional (3D) for Nd-5%, thus reducing the possibility of perfect FS nesting. The FS evolves further with increasing Nd content with no observed divergence of the effective mass between Nd-2% and 10%, consistent with the crossing of a spin density wave (SDW) type of quantum critical point (QCP). Our results elucidate the origin of the Q-phase observed at the 5% Nd-doping level [Raymond et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 83, 013707 (2014)].

Evidence of spin-phonon coupling in CrSiTe$_3$

We present the Raman scattering results on layered 2D semiconducting ferromagnetic compound CrSiTe$_3$. Four Raman active modes, predicted by symmetry, have been observed and assigned. The experimental results are supported by DFT calculations. The self-energies of the $A_g^3$ and the $E_g^3$ symmetry modes exhibit unconventional temperature evolution around 180 K. In addition, the doubly degenerate $E_g^3$ mode shows clear change of asymmetry in the same temperature region. The observed behavior is consistent with the presence of the previously reported short-range magnetic order and the strong spin-phonon coupling.

Lattice dynamics and phase transition in CrI$_3$ single crystals

The vibrational properties of $\mathrm{CrI_3}$ single crystals were investigated using Raman spectroscopy and were analyzed with respect to the changes of the crystal structure. All but one mode are observed for both the low-temperature $R\bar{3}$ and the high-temperature C2/$m$ phase. For all observed modes the energies and symmetries are in good agreement with DFT calculations. The symmetry of a single-layer was identified as $p\bar{3}1/m$. In contrast to previous studies we observe the transition from the $R\bar{3}$ to the $\mathrm{C2}/m$ phase at 180\,K and find no evidence for coexistence of both phases over a wide temperature range.

Anisotropic magnetocaloric effect in single crystals of CrI$_3$

We report a systematic investigation of dc magnetization and ac susceptibility, as well as anisotropic magnetocaloric effect in bulk CrI$_3$ single crystals. A second-stage magnetic transition was observed just below the Curie temperature $T_c$, indicating a two-step magnetic ordering. The low temperature thermal demagnetization could be well fitted by the spin-wave model rather than the single-particle model, confirming its localized magnetism. The maximum magnetic entropy change $-ΔS_M^{max} \sim 5.65$ J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ and the corresponding adiabatic temperature change $ΔT_{ad} \sim 2.34$ K are achieved from heat capacity analysis with the magnetic field up to 9 T. Anisotropy of $ΔS_M(T,H)$ was further investigated by isothermal magnetization, showing that the difference of $-ΔS_M^{max}$ between the $ab$ plane and the $c$ axis reaches a maximum value $\sim$ 1.56 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ with the field change of 5 T. With the scaling analysis of $ΔS_M$, the rescaled $ΔS_M(T,H)$ curves collapse onto a universal curve, indicating a second-order type of the magnetic transition. Furthermore, the $-ΔS_M^{max}$ follows the power law of $H^n$ with $n = 0.64(1)$, and the relative cooling power RCP depends on $H^m$ with $m = 1.12(1)$.

Polaronic transport and thermoelectricity in Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Sb$_2$S$_4$ ($x$ = 0, 0.1, and 0.2)

We report a study of Co-doped berthierite Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Sb$_2$S$_4$ ($x$ = 0, 0.1, and 0.2). The alloy series of Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Sb$_2$S$_4$ crystallize in an orthorhombic structure with the Pnma space group, similar to FeSb$_2$, and show semiconducting behavior. The large discrepancy between activation energy for conductivity, $E_ρ$ (146 $\sim$ 270 meV), and thermopower, $E_S$ (47 $\sim$ 108 meV), indicates the polaronic transport mechanism. Bulk magnetization and heat capacity measurements of pure FeSb$_2$S$_4$ ($x$ = 0) exhibit a broad antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition ($T_N$ = 46 K) followed by an additional weak transition ($T^*$ = 50 K). Transition temperatures ($T_N$ and $T^*$) slightly decrease with increasing Co content $x$. This is also reflected in the thermal conductivity measurement, indicating strong spin-lattice coupling. Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Sb$_2$S$_4$ shows relatively high value of thermopower (up to $\sim$ 624 $μ$V K$^{-1}$ at 300 K) and thermal conductivity much lower when compared to FeSb$_{2}$, a feature desired for potential applications based on FeSb$_{2}$ materials.

Anomalous Hall effect in van der Waals bonded ferromagnet Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$

We report anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in single crystals of quasi-two-dimensional Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$ ($x \approx 0.36$) ferromagnet grown by the flux method which induces defects on Fe site and bad metallic resistivity. Fe K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy was measured to provide information on local atomic environment in such crystals. The dc and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate a second-stage transition below 119 K in addition to the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition at 153 K. A linear scaling behavior between the modified anomalous Hall resistivity $ρ_{xy}/μ_0H_{eff}$ and longitudinal resistivity $ρ_{xx}^2M/μ_0H_{eff}$ implies that the AHE in Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$ should be dominated by the intrinsic Karplus-Luttinger mechanism rather than the extrinsic skew-scattering and side-jump mechanisms. The observed deviation in the linear-M Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}^A$ below 30 K is in line with its transport characteristic at low temperatures, implying the scattering of conduction electrons due to magnetic disorder and the evolution of the Fermi surface induced by possible spin-reorientation transition.

Critical behavior of the van der Waals bonded ferromagnet Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$

The critical properties of the single-crystalline van der Waals bonded ferromagnet Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$ were investigated by bulk dc magnetization around the paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition. The Fe$_{3-x}$GeTe$_2$ single crystals grown by self-flux method with Fe deficiency $x \approx 0.36$ exhibit bulk FM ordering below $T_c = 152$ K. The Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to provide information on defects and local atomic environment in such crystals. Critical exponents $β= 0.372(4)$ with a critical temperature $T_c = 151.25(5)$ K and $γ= 1.265(15)$ with $T_c = 151.17(12)$ K are obtained by the Kouvel-Fisher method whereas $δ= 4.50(1)$ is obtained by a critical isotherm analysis at $T_c = 151$ K. These critical exponents obey the Widom scaling relation $δ= 1+γ/β$, indicating self-consistency of the obtained values. With these critical exponents the isotherm $M(H)$ curves below and above the critical temperatures collapse into two independent universal branches, obeying the single scaling equation $m = f_\pm(h)$, where $m$ and $h$ are renormalized magnetization and field, respectively. The exponents determined in this study are close to those calculated from the results of the renormalization group approach for a heuristic model of three-dimensional Heisenberg ($d = 3, n = 3$) spins coupled with the attractive long-range interactions between spins that decay as $J(r)\approx r^{-(3+σ)}$ with $σ=1.89$.

Critical behavior of quasi-two-dimensional weak itinerant ferromagnet trigonal chromium telluride Cr$_{0.62}$Te

The critical properties of flux-grown single-crystalline quasi-two-dimensional weak itinerant ferromagnet Cr$_{0.62}$Te were investigated by bulk dc magnetization around the paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition. Critical exponents $β= 0.315(7)$ with a critical temperature $T_c = 230.6(3)$ K and $γ= 1.81(2)$ with $T_c = 229.1(1)$ K are obtained by the Kouvel-Fisher method whereas $δ= 6.35(4)$ is obtained by a critical isotherm analysis at $T_c = 230$ K. With these obtained exponents, the magnetization-field-temperature curves collapse into two independent curves following a single scaling equation $M|\frac{T-T_c}{T_c}|^{-β} = f_\pm(H|\frac{T-T_c}{T_c}|^{-βδ})$ around $T_c$, suggesting the reliability of the obtained exponents. Additionally, the determined exponents of Cr$_{0.62}$Te exhibit an Ising-like behavior with a change from short-range order to long-range order in the nature of magnetic interaction and with an extension from 2D to 3D on cooling through $T_c$.

Three-dimensional magnetic critical behavior in CrI$_3$

CrI$_3$ is a promising candidate for the van der Waals bonded ferromagnetic devices since its ferromagnetism can be maintained upon exfoliating of bulk crystals down to single layer. In this work we studied critical properties of bulk CrI$_3$ single crystals around the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition. Critical exponents $β$ = 0.260(4) with a critical temperature $T_c$ = 60.05(13) K and $γ$ = 1.136(6) with $T_c$ = 60.43(4) K are obtained by the Kouvel-Fisher method, whereas $δ$ = 5.32(2) is obtained by a critical isotherm analysis at $T_c$ = 60 K. The critical exponents determined in bulk CrI$_3$ single crystals suggest a three-dimensional long-range magnetic coupling with the exchange distance decaying as $J(r)\approx r^{-4.69}$.

Absence of Dirac states in BaZnBi$_{2}$ induced by spin-orbit coupling

We report magnetotransport properties of BaZnBi$_{2}$ single crystals. Whereas electronic structure features Dirac states, such states are removed from the Fermi level by spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and consequently electronic transport is dominated by the small hole and electron pockets. Our results are consistent with three dimensional (3D) but also with quasi two dimensional (2D) portions of the Fermi surface. The spin-orbit coupling-induced gap in Dirac states is much larger when compared to isostructural SrMnBi$_{2}$. This suggests that not only long range magnetic order but also mass of the alkaline earth atoms A in ABX$_{2}$ (A = alkaine earth, B = transition metal and X=Bi/Sb) are important for the presence of low-energy states obeying the relativistic Dirac equation at the Fermi surface

Phonon anomalies in FeS

We present results from light scattering experiments on tetragonal FeS with the focus placed on lattice dynamics. We identify the Raman active A1g and B1g phonon modes, a second order scattering process involving two acoustic phonons, and contributions from potentially defect-induced scattering. The temperature dependence between 300 and 20K of all observed phonon energies is governed by the lattice contraction. Below 20K the phonon energies increase by 0.5-1 cm$^{-1}$ thus indicating putative short range magnetic order. Along with the experiments we performed lattice-dynamical simulations and a symmetry analysis for the phonons and potential overtones and find good agreement with the experiments. In particular, we argue that the two-phonon excitation observed in a gap between the optical branches becomes observable due to significant electron-phonon interaction.

Absence of Local Fluctuating Dimers in Superconducting Ir$_{1-x}$(Pt,Rh)$_x$Te$_2$

The compound IrTe2 is known to exhibit a transition to a modulated state featuring Ir-Ir dimers, with large associated atomic displacements. Partial substitution of Pt or Rh for Ir destabilizes the modulated structure and induces superconductivity. It has been proposed that quantum critical dimer fluctuations might be associated with the superconductivity. Here we test for such local dimer correlations and demonstrate their absence. X-ray pair distribution function approach reveals that the local structure of Ir0.95Pt0.05Te2 and Ir0.8Rh0.2Te2 dichalcogenide superconductors with compositions just past the dimer/superconductor boundary is explained well by a dimer-free model down to 10 K, ruling out the possibility of there being nanoscale dimer fluctuations in this regime. This is inconsistent with the proposed quantum-critical-point-like interplay of the dimer state and

Small influence of magnetic ordering on lattice dynamics in TaFe$_{1.25}$Te$_3$

Raman scattering spectra of zigzag spin chain TaFe$_{1.25}$Te$_3$ single crystal are presented in a temperature range from 80 to 300 K. Nine Raman active modes of $A_g$ and $B_g$ symmetry are clearly observed and assigned by probing different scattering channels, which is confirmed by lattice dynamics calculations. Temperature dependence of the Raman modes linewidth is mainly governed by the lattice anharmonicity. The only deviation from the conventional behavior is observed for $A_g$ symmetry modes in a vicinity of the magnetic phase transition at $T_N \approx 200$ K. This implies that the electron-phonon interaction weakly changes with temperature and magnetic ordering, whereas small changes in the spectra near the critical temperature can be ascribed to spin fluctuations.

121,123Sb NQR as a microscopic probe in Te doped correlated semimetal FeSb2 : emergence of electronic Griffith phase, magnetism and metallic behavior %

$^{121,123}Sb$ nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) was applied to $Fe(Sb_{1-x}Te_x)_2$ in the low doping regime (\emph{x = 0, 0.01} and \emph{0.05}) as a microscopic zero field probe to study the evolution of \emph{3d} magnetism and the emergence of metallic behavior. Whereas the NQR spectra itself reflects the degree of local disorder via the width of the individual NQR lines, the spin lattice relaxation rate (SLRR) $1/T_1(T)$ probes the fluctuations at the $Sb$ - site. The fluctuations originate either from conduction electrons or from magnetic moments. In contrast to the semi metal $FeSb_2$ with a clear signature of the charge and spin gap formation in $1/T_1(T)T ( \sim exp/ (Δk_BT) ) $, the 1\% $Te$ doped system exhibits almost metallic conductivity and a almost filled gap. A weak divergence of the SLRR coefficient $1/T_1(T)T \sim T^{-n} \sim T^{-0.2}$ points towards the presence of electronic correlations towards low temperatures wheras the \textit{5\%} $Te$ doped sample exhibits a much larger divergence in the SLRR coefficient showing $1/T_1(T)T \sim T^{-0.72} $. According to the specific heat divergence a power law with $n\ =\ 2\ m\ =\ 0.56$ is expected for the SLRR. Furthermore $Te$-doped $FeSb_2$ as a disordered paramagnetic metal might be a platform for the electronic Griffith phase scenario. NQR evidences a substantial asymmetric broadening of the $^{121,123}Sb$ NQR spectrum for the \emph{5\%} sample. This has purely electronic origin in agreement with the electronic Griffith phase and stems probably from an enhanced $Sb$-$Te$ bond polarization and electronic density shift towards the $Te$ atom inside $Sb$-$Te$ dumbbell.

Large magnetoresistance in type-II Weyl semimetal WP$_2$

We report magnetotransport study on type-II Weyl semimetal WP$_2$ single crystals. Magnetoresistance (MR) exhibits a nonsaturating $H^{n}$ field dependence (14,300\% at 2 K and 9 T) whereas systematic violation of Kohler's rule was observed. Quantum oscillations reveal a complex multiband electronic structure. The cyclotron effective mass close to the mass of free electron m$_e$ was observed in quantum oscillations along $b$-axis, while reduced effective mass of about 0.5$m_e$ was observed in $a$-axis quantum oscillations, suggesting Fermi surface anisotropy. Temperature dependence of the resistivity shows a large upturn that cannot be explained by the multi-band magnetoresistance of conventional metals. Even though crystal structure of WP$_{2}$ is not layered as in transition metal dichalcogenides, quantum oscillations suggest partial two-dimensional character.

Magnetotransport properties of MoP$_2$

We report magnetotransport and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect studies on MoP$_2$ single crystals, predicted to be type-2 Weyl semimetal with four pairs of robust Weyl points located below the Fermi level and long Fermi arcs. The temperature dependence of resistivity shows a peak before saturation, which does not move with magnetic field. Large nonsaturating magnetoresistance (MR) was observed, and the field dependence of MR exhibits a crossover from semicalssical weak-field $B^2$ dependence to the high-field linear-field dependence, indicating the presence of Dirac linear energy dispersion. In addition, systematic violation of Kohler's rule was observed, consistent with multiband electronic transport. Strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) splitting has an effect on dHvA measurements whereas the angular-dependent dHvA orbit frequencies agree well with the calculated Fermi surface. The cyclotron effective mass $\sim$ 1.6$m_e$ indicates the bands might be trivial, possibly since the Weyl points are located below the Fermi level. Interestingly, quasi-two dimensional(2D) band structure is observed even though the crystal structure of MoP$_2$ is not layered.

Critical behavior of quasi-two-dimensional semiconducting ferromagnet CrGeTe$_3$

The critical properties of the single-crystalline semiconducting ferromagnet CrGeTe$_3$ were investigated by bulk dc magnetization around the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition. Critical exponents $β= 0.200\pm0.003$ with critical temperature $T_c = 62.65\pm0.07$ K and $γ= 1.28\pm0.03$ with $T_c = 62.75\pm0.06$ K are obtained by the Kouvel-Fisher method whereas $δ= 7.96\pm0.01$ is obtained by the critical isotherm analysis at $T_c = 62.7$ K. The determined exponents match well with those calculated from the results of renormalization group approach for a two-dimensional Ising system coupled with long-range interaction between spins decaying as $J(r)\approx r^{-(d+σ)}$ with $σ=1.52$.
