Evidence for charge mediated coupling in Fe-Ga/PMN-PT composite multiferroic

We present an experimental study of the magnetoelectric coupling (MEC) in the Fe-Ga/PMN-PT thin film multiferroic composite by means of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). Our measurements show evidence for a charge mediated coupling mechanism, suggested by the asymmetric magnetic remanence (M$_{rem}$) behaviour under opposite electric fields ($\pm$ E) and the asymmetric resonance field (H$_r$) in the FMR measurements. Also, the FMR measurements reveal a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), that can be related to an interface charge effect. and it is tunable by E field. Ab initio calculations support the existence of a charge mediated coupling at the Fe-Ga/PMN-PT interface.

Orbital selective switching of ferromagnetism in an oxide quasi two-dimensional electron gas

Multi-orbital physics in quasi-two-dimensional electron gases (q2DEGs) triggers unique phenomena not observed in bulk materials, such as unconventional superconductivity and magnetism. Here, we investigate the mechanism of orbital selective switching of the spin-polarization in the oxide q2DEG formed at the (001) interface between the LaAlO$_{3}$, EuTiO$_{3}$ and SrTiO$_{3}$ band insulators. By using density functional theory calculations, transport, magnetic and x-ray spectroscopy measurements, we find that the filling of titanium-bands with 3d$_{xz,yz}$ orbital character in the EuTiO3 layer and at the interface with SrTiO$_{3}$ induces an antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic switching of the exchange interaction between Eu-4f$^{7}$ magnetic moments. The results explain the observation of the carrier density dependent ferromagnetic correlations and anomalous Hall effect in this q2DEG, and demonstrate how combined theoretical and experimental approaches can lead to a deeper understanding of novel electronic phases and serve as a guide for the materials design for advanced electronic applications.

Magnetic order of tetragonal CuO ultra-thin films

We present a detailed low-energy muon spin rotation and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) investigation of the magnetic structure in ultra-thin tetragonal (T)-CuO films. The measured muon-spin polarization decay indicates an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with a transition temperature higher than 200K. The XMCD signal obtained around the Cu $L_{2,3}$ edges indicates the presence of pinned Cu$^{2+}$ moments that are parallel to the sample surface, and additionally, isotropic paramagnetic moments. The pinning of some of the Cu moments is caused by an AFM ordering consisting of moments that lie most likely in the plane of the film. Moreover, pinned moments show a larger orbital magnetic moment contribution with an approximate ratio of $m_{orb}/m_{spin} = 2$, indicating that these spins are located at sites with reduced symmetry. Some fractions of the pinned moments remain pinned from an AFM background even at 360K, indicating that $T_N >$ 360K. A simple model could explain qualitatively these experimental findings; however, it is in contrast to theoretical predictions, showing that the magnetic properties of ultra-thin T-CuO films differ from bulk expectations and is more complex.

Robust ferromagnetism in insulating La$_2$NiMnO$_6$ thin films

The field of oxide spintronics can strongly benefit from the establishment of robust ferromagnetic insulators with near room-temperature Curie temperature. Here we investigate the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of atomically-precise epitaxially-strained thin films of the double perovskite La$_2$NiMnO$_6$ (LNMO) grown by off-axis radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. We find that the films retain both a strong insulating behavior and a bulk-like Curie temperature in the order of 280 K, nearly independently from epitaxial strain conditions. These results suggest a prospective implementation of LNMO films in multi-layer device architectures where a high-temperature ferromagnetic insulating state is a prerequisite.

Magnetic and electronic properties at the gamma-Al2O3/SrTiO3 interface

The magnetic and electronic nature of the gamma-Al2O3/SrTiO3 spinel/perovskite interface is explored by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Polarized x-ray techniques combined with atomic multiplet calculations reveal localized magnetic moments assigned to Ti3+ at the interface with equivalent size for in- and out-of-plane magnetic field directions. Although magnetic fingerprints are revealed, the Ti3+ magnetism can be explained by a paramagnetic response at low temperature under applied magnetic fields. Modeling the x-ray linear dichroism results in a delta0 = 1.9 eV splitting between the t2g and eg states for the Ti4+ 3d0 orbitals. In addition these results indicate that the lowest energy states have the out-of-plane dxz/dyz symmetry. The isotropic magnetic moment behavior and the lowest energy dxz/dyz states are in contrast to the observations for the two-dimensional electron gas at the perovskite/perovskite interface of LaAlO3/SrTiO3, that exhibits an anisotropic magnetic dxy ground state.

Symmetry breaking at the (111) interfaces of SrTiO${_3}$ hosting a 2D-electron system

We used x-ray absorption spectroscopy to study the orbital symmetry and the energy band splitting of (111) LaAlO${_3}$/SrTiO${_3}$ and LaAlO${_3}$/EuTiO${_3}$/SrTiO${_3}$ heterostructures, hosting a quasi two-dimensional electron system (q2DES), and of a Ti-terminated (111) SrTiO${_3}$ single crystal, also known to form a q2DES at its surface. We demonstrate that the bulk tetragonal Ti-3d D${_4}$${_h}$ crystal field is turned into trigonal D${_3}$${_d}$ crystal field in all cases. The symmetry adapted a${_1}$${_g}$ and e${^π_g}$ orbitals are non-degenerate in energy and their splitting, Δ, is positive at the bare STO surface but negative in the heterostructures, where the a${_1}$${_g}$ orbital is lowest in energy. These results demonstrate that the interfacial symmetry breaking induced by epitaxial engineering of oxide interfaces has a dramatic effect on their electronic properties, and it can be used to manipulate the ground state of the q2DES.

The Spin-Reorientation Transition in TmFeO3

X-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroism (XMCD and XMLD) have been used to investigate the Fe magnetic response during the spin reorientation transition (SRT) in TmFeO3. These experiments are complemented with resonant magnetic diffraction experiments at the Tm M5 edge to study simultaneously the induced magnetic order in the Tm 4f shell and the behavior of the Tm orbitals through the SRT. Comparing the Fe XMLD results with neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements on the same sample indicate that the SRT has an enhanced temperature range in the near surface region. This view is supported by the resonant soft x-ray diffraction results at the Tm M5 edge. These find an induced magnetic moment on the Tm sites, which is well-described by a dipolar mean field model originating from the Fe moments. Even though such a model can describe the 4f response in the experiments, it is insufficient to describe the SRT even when considering a change in the 4f anisotropy. Moreover, the results of the Fe XMCD are indicative of a decoupling of spin canting and antiferromagnetic spin rotation in the near surface regime close to the SRT, which remains to be understood.

Magnetic properties of strained multiferroic CoCr2O4: a soft X-ray study

Using resonant soft X-ray techniques we follow the magnetic behavior of a strained epitaxial film of CoCr2O4, a type-II multiferroic. The film is [110]-oriented, such that both the ferroelectric and ferromagnetic moments can coexist in plane. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) is used in scattering and in transmission modes to probe the magnetization of Co and Cr separately. The transmission measurements utilized X-ray excited optical luminescence from the substrate. Resonant soft X-ray diffraction (RSXD) was used to study the magnetic order of the low temperature phase. The XMCD signals of Co and Cr appear at the same ordering temperature Tc~90K, and are always opposite in sign. The coercive field of the Co and of Cr moments is the same, and is approximately two orders of magnitude higher than in bulk. Through sum rules analysis an enlarged Co2+ orbital moment (m_L) is found, which can explain this hardening. The RSXD signal of the (q q 0) reflection appears below Ts, the same ordering temperature as the conical magnetic structure in bulk, indicating that this phase remains multiferroic under strain. To describe the azimuthal dependence of this reflection, a slight modification is required to the spin model proposed by the conventional Lyons-Kaplan-Dwight-Menyuk theory for magnetic spinels. Lastly, a slight increase in reflected intensity is observed below Ts=27K when measuring at the Cr edge (but not at the Co edge).

X-ray absorption study of the ferromagnetic Cu moment at the $\mathbf{{YBa_2Cu_3O_7}/{La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}}$ interface and the variation of its exchange interaction with the Mn moment

With x-ray absorption spectroscopy and polarized neutron reflectometry we studied how the magnetic proximity effect at the interface between the cuprate high-$T_C$ superconductor $\mathrm{YBa_2Cu_3O_7}$ (YBCO) and the ferromagnet $\mathrm{La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_3}$ (LCMO) is related to the electronic and magnetic properties of the LCMO layers. In particular, we explored how the magnitude of the ferromagnetic Cu moment on the YBCO side depends on the strength of the antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange coupling with the Mn moment on the LCMO side. We found that the Cu moment remains sizeable if the AF coupling with the Mn moments is strongly reduced or even entirely suppressed. The ferromagnetic order of the Cu moments thus seems to be intrinsic to the interfacial CuO$_2$ planes and related to a weakly ferromagnetic intra-planar exchange interaction. The latter is discussed in terms of the partial occupation of the Cu $3d_{3z^2-r^2}$ orbitals, which occurs in the context of the so-called orbital reconstruction of the interfacial Cu ions.

Non-magnetic ground state of Ni adatoms on Te-terminated bismuth chalcogenide topological insulators

We report on the quenching of single Ni adatom moments on Te-terminated Bi2Te2Se and Bi2Te3 topological insulator surfaces. The effect becomes manifested as a missing X-ray magnetic circular dichroism for resonant L3,2 transitions into partially filled Ni 3d states of occupancy n_d = 9.2. On the basis of a comparative study of Ni and Fe using scanning tunneling microscopy and ab initio calculations we are able to relate the element specific moment formation to a local Stoner criterion. While Fe adatoms form large spin moments of m_s = 2.54 mu_B with out-of-plane anisotropy due to a sufficiently large density of states at the Fermi energy, Ni remains well below an effective Stoner threshold for local moment formation. With the Fermi level remaining in the bulk band gap after adatom deposition, non-magnetic Ni and preferentially out-of-plane oriented magnetic Fe with similar structural properties on Bi2Te2Se surfaces constitute a perfect platform to study off-on effects of time-reversal symmetry breaking on topological surface states.

Magnetoelectro-elastic control of magnetism in an artificial multiferroic

We study the coexistence of strain- and charge-mediated magnetoelectric coupling in a cobalt (0-7 nm) wedge on ferroelectric [Pb(Mg$_{1/3}$/Nb$_{2/3}$)O$_{3}$]$_{0.68}$-[PbTiO$_{3}$]$_{0.32}$ (011) using surface-sensitive x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy at the Co L$_{3,2}$ edges. Three distinct electric field driven remanent magnetization states can be set in the Co film at room temperature. Ab-initio density functional theory calculations unravel the relative contributions of both strain and charge to the observed magnetic anisotropy changes illustrating magnetoelectro-elastic coupling at artificial multiferroic interfaces.

Interplay between Orbital Magnetic Moment and Crystal Field Symmetry: Fe atoms on MgO

We combine density functional theory, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, multiplet calculations, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy to assess the magnetic properties of Fe atoms adsorbed on a thin layer of MgO(100) on Ag(100). Despite the strong axial field due to the O ligand, the weak cubic field induced by the four-fold coordination to Mg atoms entirely quenches the first order orbital moment. This is in marked contrast to Co, which has an out-of-plane orbital moment of $L_z = \pm 3$ that is protected from mixing in a cubic ligand field. The spin-orbit interaction restores a large fraction of the Fe orbital moment leading a zero-field splitting of $14.0 \pm 0.3$~meV, the largest value reported for surface adsorbed Fe atoms.

X-ray absorption spectroscopy study of the electronic and magnetic proximity effects in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ multilayers

With x-ray absorption spectroscopy we investigated the orbital reconstruction and the induced ferromagnetic moment of the interfacial Cu atoms in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ (YBCO/LCMO) and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ (LSCO/LCMO) multilayers. We demonstrate that these electronic and magnetic proximity effects are coupled and are common to these cuprate/manganite multilayers. Moreover, we show that they are closely linked to a specific interface termination with a direct Cu-O-Mn bond. We furthermore show that the intrinsic hole doping of the cuprate layers and the local strain due to the lattice mismatch between the cuprate and manganite layers are not of primary importance. These findings underline the central role of the covalent bonding at the cuprate/manganite interface in defining the spin-electronic properties.

Growth and characterization of conducting LaAlO3/EuTiO3/SrTiO3 het-erostructures

We studied the structural, magnetic and transport properties of LaAlO3/EuTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition. The samples have been characterized in-situ by electron diffraction and scanning probe mi-croscopy and ex-situ by transport measurements and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. LaAlO3/EuTiO3/SrTiO3 films show a ferromagnetic transition at T<7.5 K, related to the ordering of Eu2+ spins, even in samples characterized by just two EuTiO3 unit cells. A finite metallic conductivity is observed only in the case of samples composed by one or two EuTiO3 unit cells and, simultaneously, by a LaAlO3 thickness equal or above 4 unit cells. The role of ferromagnetic EuTiO3 on the transport properties of delta-doped LaAlO3/EuTiO3/SrTiO3 is critically discussed.

Origin of interface magnetism in BiMnO3/SrTiO3 and LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures

Possible ferromagnetism induced in otherwise non-magnetic materials has been motivating intense research in complex oxide heterostructures. Here we show that a confined magnetism is realized at the interface between SrTiO3 and two insulating polar oxides, BiMnO3 and LaAlO3. By using polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we find that in both cases the magnetic order is stabilized by a negative exchange interaction between the electrons transferred to the interface and local magnetic moments. These local magnetic moments are associated to Ti3+ ions at the interface itself for LaAlO3/SrTiO3 and to Mn3+ ions in the overlayer for BiMnO3/SrTiO3. In LaAlO3/SrTiO3 the induced magnetic moments are quenched by annealing in oxygen, suggesting a decisive role of oxygen vacancies in the stabilization of interfacial magnetism.

Stability of the Ni sites across the pressure-induced metallization in YNiO3

The local environment of nickel atoms in Y NiO3 across the pressure- induced insulator to metal (IM) transition was studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) supported by ab initio calculations. The monotonic contraction of the NiO6 units under applied pressure observed up to 13 GPa, stops in a limited pressure domain around 14 GPa, before resuming above 16 GPa. In this narrow pressure range, crystallographic modifications basically occur in the medium/long range, not in the NiO6 octahedron, whereas the evolution of the near-edge XAS features can be associated to metallization. Ab initio calculations show that these features are related to medium range order, provided that the Ni-O-Ni angle enables a proper overlap of the Ni eg and O 2p orbitals. Metallization is then not directly related to modifications in the average local geometry of the NiO6 units but more likely to an inter-octahedra rearrangement. These outcomes provides evidences of the bandwidth driven nature of the IM transition.

Spin-orbit induced mixed-spin ground state in $R$NiO$_3$ perovskites probed by XAS: new insight into the metal to insulator transition

We report on a Ni L$_{2,3}$ edges x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study in $R$NiO$_3$ perovskites. These compounds exhibit a metal to insulator ($MI$) transition as temperature decreases. The L$_{3}$ edge presents a clear splitting in the insulating state, associated to a less hybridized ground state. Using charge transfer multiplet calculations, we establish the importance of the crystal field and 3d spin-orbit coupling to create a mixed-spin ground state. We explain the $MI$ transition in $R$NiO$_3$ perovskites in terms of modifications in the Ni$^{3+}$ crystal field splitting that induces a spin transition from an essentially low-spin (LS) to a mixed-spin state.
