A corner transfer matrix renormalisation group investigation of the vertex-interacting self-avoiding walk model

A recently introduced extension of the Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalisation Group (CTMRG) method useful for the study of self-avoiding walk type models is presented in detail and applied to a class of interacting self-avoiding walks due to Blöte and Nienhuis. This model displays two different types of collapse transition depending on model parameters. One is the standard $θ$-point transition. The other is found to give rise to a first-order collapse transition despite being known to be in other respects critical.

Corner transfer matrix renormalization group method for two-dimensional self-avoiding walks and other O(n) models

We present an extension of the corner transfer matrix renormalisation group (CTMRG) method to O(n) invariant models, with particular interest in the self-avoiding walk class of models (O(n=0)). The method is illustrated using an interacting self-avoiding walk model. Based on the efficiency and versatility when compared to other available numerical methods, we present CTMRG as the method of choice for two-dimensional self-avoiding walk problems.

Classical heisenberg antiferromagnet away from the pyrochlore lattice limit: entropic versus energetic selection

The stability of the disordered ground state of the classical Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet is studied within extensive Monte Carlo simulations by introducing an additional exchange interaction $J'$ that interpolates between the pyrochlore lattice ($J'=0$) and the face-centered cubic lattice ($J'=J$). It is found that for $J'/J$ as low as $J'/J\ge 0.01$, the system is long range ordered : the disordered ground state of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet is unstable when introducing very small deviations from the pure $J'=0$ limit. Furthermore, it is found that the selected phase is a collinear state energetically greater than the incommensurate phase suggested by a mean field analysis. To our knowledge this is the first example where entropic selection prevails over the energetic one.

Quantum Spin Systems: From Spin Gaps to Pseudo Gaps

Many low dimensional spin systems with a dimerized or ladder-like antiferromagnetic exchange coupling have a gapped excitation spectrum with magnetic bound states within the spin gap. For spin ladders with an even number of legs the existence of spin gaps and within the t-J model a tendency toward superconductivity with d-wave symmetry is predicted. In the following we will characterize the spin excitation spectra of different low dimensional spin systems taking into account strong spin phonon interaction ($\rm CuGeO_3$), charge ordering ($\rm NaV_2O_5$) and doping on chains and ladders (\ladder). The spectroscopic characterization of the model systems mentioned above has been performed using magnetic inelastic light scattering originating from a spin conserving exchange scattering mechanism. This is also bound to yield more insight into the interrelation between these spin gap excitations and the origin of the pseudo gap in high temperature superconductors.
