Quark matter nucleation in hot hadronic matter

We study the quark deconfinement phase transition in hot $β$-stable hadronic matter. Assuming a first order phase transition, we calculate the enthalpy per baryon of the hadron-quark phase transition. We calculate and compare the nucleation rate and the nucleation time due to thermal and quantum nucleation mechanisms. We compute the crossover temperature above which thermal nucleation dominates the finite temperature quantum nucleation mechanism. We next discuss the consequences for the physics of proto-neutron stars. We introduce the concept of limiting conversion temperature and critical mass $M_{cr}$ for proto-hadronic stars, and we show that proto-hadronic stars with a mass $M < M_{cr}$ could survive the early stages of their evolution without decaying to a quark star.

Quark-hadron phase transition in a neutron star under strong magnetic fields

We study the effect of a strong magnetic field on the properties of neutron stars with a quark-hadron phase transition. It is shown that the magnetic field prevents the appearance of a quark phase, enhances the leptonic fraction, decreases the baryonic density extension of the mixed phase and stiffens the total equation of state, including both the stellar matter and the magnetic field contributions. Two parametrisations of a density dependent static magnetic field, increasing, respectively, fast and slowly with the density and reaching $2-4\times 10^{18}$G in the center of the star, are considered. The compact stars with strong magnetic fields have maximum mass configurations with larger masses and radius and smaller quark fractions. The parametrisation of the magnetic field with density has a strong influence on the star properties.

Dense stellar matter with trapped neutrinos under strong magnetic fields

We investigate the effects of strong magnetic fields on the equation of state of dense stellar neutrino-free and neutrino-trapped matter. Relativistic nuclear models both with constant couplings (NLW) and with density dependent parameters (DDRH) and including hyperons are considered . It is shown that at low densities neutrinos are suppressed in the presence of the magnetic field. The magnetic field reduces the strangeness fraction of neutrino-free matter and increases the strangeness fraction of neutrino-trapped matter. The mass-radius relation of stars described by these equations of state are determined. The magnetic field makes the overall equation of state stiffer and the stronger the field the larger the mass of maximum mass star and the smaller the baryon density at the center of the star. As a consequence in the presence of strong magnetic fields the possibility that a protoneutron star evolves to a blackhole is smaller.

Effect of the $δ$-meson on the instabilities of nuclear matter under strong magnetic fields

We study the influence of the isovector-scalar meson on the spinodal instabilities and the distillation effect in asymmetric non-homogenous nuclear matter under strong magnetic fields, of the order of $10^{18}-10^{19}$ G. Relativistic nuclear models both with constant couplings (NLW) and with density dependent parameters (DDRH) are considered. A strong magnetic field can have large effects on the instability regions giving rise to bands of instability and wider unstable regions. It is shown that for neutron rich matter the inclusion of the $δ$ meson increases the size of the instability region for NLW models and decreases it for the DDRH models. The effect of the $δ$ meson on the transition density to homogeneous $β$-equilibrium matter is discussed. The DDRH$δ$ model predicts the smallest transition pressures, about half the values obtained for NL$δ$.

Quark matter under strong magnetic fields in the su(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Model

In the present work we use the mean field approximation to investigate quark matter described by the su(3) Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model subject to a strong magnetic field. We consider two cases: pure quark matter and quark matter in beta-equilibrium possibly present in magnetars. The results are compared with the ones obtained with the su(2) version of the model. The energy per baryon of magnetized quark matter becomes more bound than nuclear matter made of iron nuclei, for B around 2x10^(19)G. When the su(3) NJL model is applied to stellar matter, the maximum mass configurations are always above 1.45 solar masses and may be as high as 1.86 solar masses for a central magnetic field of 5x10^(18)G. These numbers are within the masses of observed neutron stars.

Minimal Magnetic Energy Theorem

Thomson's theorem states that static charge distributions in conductors only exist at the conducting surfaces in an equipotential configuration, yielding a minimal electrostatic energy. In this work we present a proof for this theorem based on the variational principle. Furthermore, an analogue statement for magnetic systems is also introduced and proven: the stored magnetic field energy reaches the minimum value for superficial current distributions so that the magnetic vector potential points in the same direction as the surface current. This is the counterpart of Thomson's theorem for the magnetic field. The result agrees with the fact that currents in superconductors are confined near the surface and indicates that the distinction between superconductors and hypothetical perfect conductors is fictitious.

Hadron production in non linear relativistic mean field models

By using a parametrization of the non-linear Walecka model which takes into account the binding energy of different hyperons, we present a study of particle production yields measured in central Au-Au collision at RHIC. Two sets of different hyperon-meson coupling constants are employed in obtaining the hadron production and chemical freeze-out parameters. These quantities show a weak dependence on the used hyperon-meson couplings. Results are in good overall accordance with experimental data. We have found that the repulsion among the baryons is quite small and, through a preliminary analysis of the effective mesonic masses, we suggest a way to improve the fittings.

Note on Many-Quark Model with su(4) Algebraic Structure

In a many-quark model developed in our previous paper where two-body color pairing and particle-hole type interactions are active, the exact energy eigenstates are re-formed with physically clearer expressions than those derived in our previous paper. By using the re-formed energy eigenstates, two types of the eigenstates in which the pairing correlation and the quark triplet formation separately appear definitely, are unified and this model can be treated for both the strong color correlations and the quark triplet formations.

On the Exact Eigenstates and the Ground States Based on the Boson Realization for Many-Quark Model with su(4) Algebraic Structure

Based on the boson realization, the ground state and phase structure are investigated in a many-quark model with algebraic structure developed in our previous paper, in which the two-body pairing and particle-hole type interactions are active. The physical interpretation of the exact eigenstates obtained in the boson realization in our previous paper is given in a many-quark model with su(4) algebraic structure.

The pasta phase within density dependent hadronic models

In the present paper we investigate the onset of the pasta phase with different parametrisations of the density dependent hadronic model and compare the results with one of the usual parametrisation of the non-linear Walecka model. The influence of the scalar-isovector virtual delta meson is shown. At zero temperature two different methods are used, one based on coexistent phases and the other on the Thomas-Fermi approximation. At finite temperature only the coexistence phases method is used. npe matter with fixed proton fractions and in beta-equilibrium are studied. We compare our results with restrictions imposed on the the values of the density and pressure at the inner edge of the crust, obtained from observations of the Vela pulsar and recent isospin diffusion data from heavy-ion reactions, and with predictions from spinodal calculations.

Quark matter under strong magnetic fields in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model

In the present work we use the large-$N_c$ approximation to investigate quark matter described by the SU(2) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model subject to a strong magnetic field. The Landau levels are filled in such a way that usual kinks appear in the effective mass and other related quantities. $β$-equilibrium is also considered and the macroscopic properties of a magnetar described by this quark matter is obtained. Our study shows that the magnetar masses and radii are larger if the magnetic field increases but only very large fields ($\ge 10^{18}$ G) affect the EoS in a non negligible way.

Spinodal instabilities and the distillation effect in nuclear matter under strong magnetic fields

We study the effect of strong magnetic fields, of the order of $10^{18}$-$10^{19}$ G, on the instability region of nuclear matter at subsaturation densities. Relativistic nuclear models both with constant couplings and with density dependent parameters are considered. It is shown that a strong magnetic field can have large effects on the instability regions giving rise to bands of instability and wider unstable regions. As a consequence we predict larger transition densities at the inner edge of the crust of compact stars with strong magnetic field. The direction of instability gives rise to a very strong distillation effect if the last Landau level is only partially filled. However, for almost completed Landau levels an anti-distillation effect may occur.

Many-Quark Model with su(4) Algebraic Structure

With the use of a certain type of the Schwinger boson representation of the su(4) algebra, the Bonn model for many-quark systems and an extension of the model, in which the energies of the various exact states are controled, namely, the energies are enhanced or de-enhanced, are investigated. Especially, the triplet formation and the pairing correlation in many-quark states are discussed. In the boson space, all the results are analytically expressed in the exact forms.

Stellar matter with a strong magnetic field within density-dependent relativistic models

The effect of strong magnetic fields on the equation of state (EoS) for compact stars described with density-dependent relativistic hadronic models is studied. A comparison with other mean-field relativistic models is done. It is shown that the largest differences between models occur for low densities, and that the magnetic field affects the crust properties of a star, namely its extension.

Metastability of hadronic compact stars

Pure hadronic compact stars, above a threshold value of their gravitational mass (central pressure), are metastable to the conversion to quark stars (hybrid or strange stars). In this paper, we present a systematic study of the metastability of pure hadronic compact stars using different relativistic models for the equation of state (EoS). In particular, we compare results for the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model with those for the Glendenning--Moszkowski parametrization of the non-linear Walecka model (NLWM). For QMC model, we find large values ($M_{cr} = 1.6$ -- $1.9 M_\odot$) for the critical mass of the hadronic star sequence and we find that the formation of a quark star is only possible with a soft quark matter EoS. For the Glendenning--Moszkowski parametrization of the NLWM, we explore the effect of different hyperon couplings on the critical mass and on the stellar conversion energy. We find that increasing the value of the hyperon coupling constants shifts the bulk transition point for quark deconfinement to higher densities, increases the stellar metastability threshold mass and the value of the critical mass, and thus makes the formation of quark stars less likely. For the largest values of the hyperon couplings we find a critical mass which may be as high as 1.9 - 2.1 $M_\odot$. These stellar configurations, which contain a large central hyperon fraction ($f_{Y,cr} \sim 30 %$), would be able to describe highly-massive compact stars, such as the one associated to the millisecond pulsars PSR B1516+02B with a mass $M = 1.94^{+ 0.17}_{- 0.19} M_{\odot}$.

Constraining relativistic models through heavy ion collisions

Relativistic models can be successfully applied to the description of compact star properties in nuclear astrophysics as well as to nuclear matter and finite nuclei properties, these studies taking place at low and moderate temperatures. Nevertheless, all results are model dependent and so far it is unclear whether some of them should be discarded. Moreover, in the regime of hot hadronic matter very few calculations exist using these relativistic models, in particular when applied to particle yields in heavy ion collisions. In the present work we comment on the known constraints that can help the selection of adequate models in this regime and investigate the main differences that arise when the particle production during a Au+Au collision at RHIC is calculated with different models.

Low density expansion and isospin dependence of nuclear energy functional: comparison between relativistic and Skyrme models

In the present work we take the non relativistic limit of relativistic models and compare the obtained functionals with the usual Skyrme parametrization. Relativistic models with both constant couplings and with density dependent couplings are considered. While some models present very good results already at the lowest order in the density, models with non-linear terms only reproduce the energy functional if higher order terms are taken into account in the expansion.

Equation of State for supernova explosion simulations

In this work we present a detailed explanation of the construction of an appropriate equation of state (EoS) for nuclear astrophysics. We use a relativistic model in order to obtain an EoS for neutrally charged matter that extends from very low to high densities, from zero temperature to 100 MeV with proton fractions ranging from 0 (no protons) to 0.6 (asymmetric matter with proton excess). For the achievement of complete convergence, the Sommerfeld approximation is used at low temperatures and the Boltzman distribution for relativistic particles is used in the calculation of the electron properties at very low densities. Photons are also incorporated as blackbody radiation. An extension of this EoS is also presented with the inclusion of strangeness by taking into account the sigma minus hyperon only. Strangeness fractions range from 0.02 to 0.3.
