Controlled antivortex propagation at bifurcations in reconfigurable NdCo/NiFe racetracks

The controlled propagation of spin textures at bifurcations is a critical challenge for racetrack-based logic devices. Here, we investigate the effect of longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields on the propagation of magnetic antivortices at bifurcations within the stripe domain pattern of a reconfigurable NdCo/NiFe racetrack in order to control the preferred antivortex trajectory. Magnetic Transmission X-ray Microscopy experiments were employed to correlate the observed propagation path with the local magnetic configuration. We demonstrate that Zeeman coupling to the magnetization components at the bifurcation core enables switching of the preferred propagation branch using low-amplitude transverse magnetic fields, without modifying the global stripe domain configuration that defines the guiding racetrack landscape. In-plane magnetic anisotropy provides an additional mechanism to break the symmetry between the upper and lower bifurcation branches by tuning the relative orientation between the stripe domain pattern and the longitudinal magnetic fields.

Magnetic order and disorder in nanomagnets probed by superconducting vortices

We have studied two nanomagnet systems with strong (Co/Pd multilayers) and weak (NdCo alloy films) stray magnetic fields by probing the out-of-plane magnetic states with superconducting vortices. The hybrid samples are made of array of nanomagnets embedded in superconducting Nb thin films. The vortex motion detects relevant magnetic state features, since superconducting vortices are able to discriminate between different magnetic stray field strengths and directions. The usual matching effect between the superconducting vortex lattice and the periodic pinning array can be quenched by means of disorder magnetic potentials with strong stray fields at random. Ordered stray fields retrieve the matching effect and yield asymmetry and shift in the vortex dissipation signal. Furthermore vortices can discriminate the sizes of the nanomagnet magnetic domains, detecting magnetic domain sizes as small as 70 nm. In addition, we observe that the vortex cores play the crucial role instead of the supercurrents around the vortex.

Structure of self-organized Fe clusters grown on Au(111) analyzed by Grazing Incidence X-Ray Diffraction

We report a detailed investigation of the first stages of the growth of self-organized Fe clusters on the reconstructed Au(111) surface by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. Below one monolayer coverage, the Fe clusters are in "local epitaxy" whereas the subsequent layers adopt first a strained fcc lattice and then a partly relaxed bcc(110) phase in a Kurdjumov-Sachs epitaxial relationship. The structural evolution is discussed in relation with the magnetic properties of the Fe clusters.
