Ratchet Cellular Automata for Colloids in Dynamic Traps

We numerically investigate the transport of kinks in a ratchet cellular automata geometry for colloids interacting with dynamical traps. We find that thermal effects can enhance the transport efficiency in agreement with recent experiments. At high temperatures we observe the creation and annihilation of thermally induced kinks that degrade the signal transmission. We consider both the deterministic and stochastic cases and show how the trap geometry can be adjusted to switch between these two cases. The operation of the dynamical trap geometry can be achieved with the adjustment of fewer parameters than ratchet cellular automata constructed using static traps.

Cooperative Behavior and Pattern Formation in Mixtures of Driven and Nondriven Colloidal Assemblies

We simulate a disordered assembly of particles interacting through a repulsive Yukawa potential with a small fraction of the particles coupled to an external drive. Distortions in the arrangement of the nondriven particles produce a dynamically induced effective attraction between the driven particles, giving rise to intermittent one-dimensional stringlike structures. The velocity of a moving string increases with the number of driven particles in the string. We identify the average stable string length as a function of driving force, background particle density, and particle charge. This model represents a new type of collective transport system composed of interacting particles moving through deformable disorder.

Heterogeneities and Topological Defects in Two-Dimensional Pinned Liquids

We simulate a model of repulsively interacting colloids on a commensurate two-dimensional triangular pinning substrate where the amount of heterogeneous motion that appears at melting can be controlled systematically by turning off a fraction of the pinning sites. We correlate the amount of heterogeneous motion with the average topological defect number, time dependent defect fluctuations, colloid diffusion, and the form of the van Hove correlation function. When the pinning sites are all off or all on, the melting occurs in a single step. When a fraction of the sites are turned off, the melting becomes considerably broadened and signatures of a two-step melting process appear. The noise power associated with fluctuations in the number of topological defects reaches a maximum when half of the pinning sites are removed, and the noise spectrum has a pronounced 1/f^αstructure in the heterogeneous regime. We find that regions of high mobility are associated with regions of high dislocation densities.

Vortex configurations and dynamics in elliptical pinning sites for high matching fields

Using numerical simulations we study the configurations, dynamics, and melting properties of vortex lattices interacting with elliptical pinning sites at integer matching fields with as many as 27 vortices per pin. Our pinning model is based on a recently produced experimental system [G. Karapetrov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 167002 (2005)], and the vortex configurations we obtain match well with experimental vortex images from the same system. We find that the strong pinning sites capture more than one vortex each, and that the saturation number of vortices residing in a pin increases with applied field due to the pressure from the surrounding vortices. At high matching fields, the vortices in the intestitial regions form a disordered triangular lattice. We measure the depinning thresholds for both the x and y directions, and find distinctive dynamical responses along with highly anisotropic thresholds. For melting of the vortex configurations under zero applied current, we find multi-step melting transitions in which the interstitial vortices melt at a much lower temperature than the pinned vortices. We associate this with signatures in the specific heat.

Crossover from Intermittent to Continuum Dynamics for Locally Driven Colloids

We simulate a colloid with charge q_d driven through a disordered assembly of interacting colloids with charge q and show that, for q_d \approx q, the velocity-force relation is nonlinear and the velocity fluctuations of the driven particle are highly intermittent with a 1/f characteristic. When q_d >> q, the average velocity ddrops, the velocity force relation becomes linear, and the velocity fluctuations are Gaussian. We discuss the results in terms of a crossover from strongly intermittent heterogeneous dynamics to continuum dynamics. We also make several predictions for the transient response in the different regimes.

Ratchet Effect and Nonlinear Transport for Particles on Random Substrates with Crossed ac Drives

We show in simulations that overdamped interacting particles in two dimensions with a randomly disordered substrate can exhibit novel nonequilibrium transport phenomena including a transverse ratchet effect, where a combined dc drive and circular ac drive produce a drift velocity in the direction transverse to the applied dc drive. The random disorder does not break any global symmetry; however, in two dimensions, symmetry breaking occurs due to the chirality of the circular drive. In addition to inducing the transverse ratchet effect, increasing the ac amplitude also strongly affects the longitudinal velocity response and can produce what we term an overshoot effect where the longitudinal dc velocity is higher in the presence of the ac drive than it would be for a dc drive alone. We also find a dynamical reordering transition upon increasing the ac amplitude. In the absence of a dc drive, it is possible to obtain a ratchet effect when the combined ac drives produce particle orbits that break a reflection symmetry. In this case, as the ac amplitude increases, current reversals can occur. These effects may be observable for vortices in type II superconductors as well as for colloids interacting with random substrates.

Multiscaling at Point J: Jamming is a Critical Phenomenon

We analyze the jamming transition that occurs as a function of increasing packing density in a disordered two-dimensional assembly of disks at zero temperature for ``Point J'' of the recently proposed jamming phase diagram. We measure the total number of moving disks and the transverse length of the moving region, and find a power law divergence as the packing density increases toward a critical jamming density. This provides evidence that the T = 0 jamming transition as a function of packing density is a {\it second order} phase transition. Additionally we find evidence for multiscaling, indicating the importance of long tails in the velocity fluctuations.

Statics and Dynamics of Vortex Liquid Crystals

Using numerical simulations we examine the static and dynamic properties of the recently proposed vortex liquid crystal state. We confirm the existence of a smectic-A phase in the absence of pinning. Quenched disorder can induce a smectic state even at T=0. When an external drive is applied, a variety of anisotropic dynamical flow states with distinct voltage signatures occur, including elastic depinning in the hard direction and plastic depinning in the easy direction. We discuss the implications of the anisotropic transport for other systems which exhibit depinning phenomena, such as stripes and electron liquid crystals.

Hysteresis and Noise in Stripe and Clump Forming Systems

We use simulations to examine hysteresis and noise in a model system that produces heterogeneous orderings including stripe and clump phases. In the presence of a disordered substrate, these heterogeneous phases exhibit 1/f$^α$ noise and hysteresis in transport. The noise fluctuations are maximal in the heterogeneous phases, while in the uniform phases the hysteresis vanishes and both $α$ and the noise power decrease. We compare our results to recent experiments exhibiting noise and hysteresis in high-temperature superconductors where charge heterogeneities may occur.

Ordering and Melting in Colloidal Molecular Crystal Mixtures

We show in simulations that a rich variety of novel orderings such as pinwheel and star states can be realized for colloidal molecular crystal mixtures at rational ratios of the number of colloids to the number of minima from an underlying periodic substrate. These states can have multi-step melting transitions and also show coexistence in which one species disorders while the other species remains orientationally disordered. For other mixtures, only partially ordered or frustrated states form.

Pinning and Dynamics of Colloids on One Dimensional Periodic Potentials

Using numerical simulations we study the pinning and dynamics of interacting colloids on periodic one-dimensional substrates. As a function of colloid density, temperature, and substrate strength, we find a variety of pinned and dynamic states including pinned smectic, pinned buckled, two-phase flow, and moving partially ordered structures. We show that for increasing colloid density, peaks in the depinning threshold occur at commensurate states. The scaling of the pinning threshold versus substrate strength changes when the colloids undergo a transition from one-dimensional chains to a buckled configuration.

Reentrant Disordering of Colloidal Molecular Crystals on 2D Periodic Substrates

We study colloidal ordering and disordering on two-dimensional periodic substrates where the number of colloids per substrate minima is two or three. The colloids form dimer or trimer states with orientational ordering, referred to as colloidal molecular crystals. At a fixed temperature such that, in the absence of a substrate, the colloids are in a triangular floating solid state, upon increasing the substrate strength we find a transition to an ordered colloidal molecular crystal state, followed by a transition to a disordered state where the colloids still form dimers or trimers but the orientational order is lost. These results are in agreement with recent experiments.

Noise at the Wigner Glass Transition

Using a simple model for interacting electrons in two dimensions with random disorder, we show that a crossover from a Wigner liquid to a Wigner glass occurs as a function of charge density. The noise power increases strongly at the transition and the characteristics of the 1/f^alpha noise change. When the temperature is increased, the noise power decreases. We compare these results with recent noise measurements in systems with two-dimensional metal-insulator transitions.

Rectification and Flux Reversals for Vortices Interacting with Triangular Traps

We simulate vortices in superconductors interacting with two-dimensional arrays of triangular traps. We find that, upon application of an ac drive, a net dc flow can occur which shows current reversals with increasing ac drive amplitude for certain vortex densities, in agreement with recent experiments and theoretical predictions. We identify the vortex dynamics responsible for the different rectification regimes. We also predict the occurrence of a novel transverse rectification effect in which a dc flow appears that is transverse to the direction of the applied ac drive.

Nonlinear dynamics, rectification, and phase locking for particles on symmetrical two-dimensional periodic substrates with dc and circular ac drives

We investigate the dynamical motion of particles on a two-dimensional symmetric periodic substrate in the presence of both a dc drive along a symmetry direction of the periodic substrate and an additional circular ac drive. For large enough ac drives, the particle orbit encircles one or more potential maxima of the periodic substrate. In this case, when an additional increasing dc drive is applied in the longitudinal direction, the longitudinal velocity increases in a series of discrete steps that are integer multiples of the lattice constant of the substrate times the frequency. Fractional steps can also occur. These integer and fractional steps correspond to distinct stable dynamical orbits. A number of these phases also show a rectification in the positive or negative transverse direction where a non-zero transverse velocity occurs in the absence of a dc transverse drive. We map out the phase diagrams of the regions of rectification as a function of ac amplitude, and find a series of tongues. Most of the features, including the steps in the longitudinal velocity and the transverse rectification, can be captured with a simple toy model and by arguments from nonlinear maps. We have also investigated the effects of thermal disorder and incommensuration on the rectification phenomena, and find that for increasing disorder, the rectification regions are gradually smeared and the longitudinal velocity steps are no longer flat but show a linearly increasing velocity.

Directional Locking Effects and Dynamics for Particles Driven Through a Colloidal Lattice

We examine the dynamics of a single colloidal particle driven through a colloidal lattice which can distort in response to the driven particle. We find a remarkably rich variety of dynamical locking phenomena as we vary the angle of the applied drive with respect to the orientation of the colloidal lattice. When the driven colloid locks to certain lattice symmetry directions, its motion is not necessarily aligned with the drive. Applying a transverse force to the driven particle can result in either increased or decreased drag in the driving direction, depending on the angle of the drive. The dynamical locking produces anomalies in both the longitudinal and the transverse velocity vs driving force curves, including steps and regimes of negative differential resistance. As the interaction of the driven particle with the surrounding lattice increases, significant distortion or dislocations in the surrounding media occur, and as a result the directional locking is enhanced. We compare these results to those obtained for driving particles over fixed substrates, and show that a far richer variety of behaviors occurs when the underlying lattice is allowed to distort. We discuss how this system can be used for particle species segregation when the onset of different locking angles occurs at different drives for varied particle sizes. We also show that the most pronounced locking phases should be observable at temperatures up to the melting transition of the colloidal lattice.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking for Driven Interacting Particles on Triangular Substrates

For collectively interacting repulsive particles driven on triangular substrates, we show that for certain directions of drive a spontaneous symmetry breaking phenomena occurs where the particles can flow in one of two directions that are not aligned with the external drive, giving rise to a positive or negative Hall current. Along these directions, the particle flow is highly ordered, while in the direction of the drive the flow is disordered. We also find a number of dynamical phase transitions and unusual hysteretic properties that arise due to the symmetry breaking properties of the flows.

Ratchet Effects for Vortices in Superconductors with Periodic Pinning Arrays

Using numerical simulations we show that novel transport phenomena can occur for vortices moving in periodic pinning arrays when two external perpendicular ac drives are applied. In particular, we find a ratchet effect where the vortices can have a net dc drift even in the absence of a dc drive. This ratchet effect can occur for ac drives which create orbits that break one or more reflection symmetries.
