Low energy spin wave excitations in bilayered magnetic manganite La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($0.30\leq{x}\leq{0.50}$)

We have studied the low-temperature behavior of the magnetization and the specific heat of the bilayered perovskite system $% La_{2-2x}Sr_{1+2x}Mn_{2}O_{7}$, for $0.30\leq x\leq 0.50$. Our analysis reveals that below 30 K the temperature dependence of the magnetization of the ferromagnetic samples, $x=0.30$, 0.32, and 0.36, in a field of 1T can be interpreted in terms of the thermal excitations of a two-dimensional gas of ferromagnetic magnons. The specific heat in zero field for these samples as for the $x=0.50$ antiferromagnetic one, is linear with temperature between the range of 1.8K $\leq $ T $\leq $ 10K. This behavior can be also explained by the magnon gas model. By comparing specific heat measurements in zero field with those taken in a field of 9T we are able to extract the lattice and electronic contributions and determine the in-plane exchange interactions. That are found to be in reasonable agreement with the values inferred from the analysis of the magnetization data and also with the values reported by inelastic neutron scattering studies. In addition, we found that the electronic density of states obtained for the $x=0.50$ sample is in agreement with previous band structure calculations.

Neutral-dangling bond depletion in a-SiN films caused by magnetic rare-earth elements

Amorphous silicon-nitrogen thin films doped with rare-earth elements (a-SiN:RE; RE = Y, La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Yb, and Lu) have been prepared by co-sputtering and studied by means of electron spin resonance (ESR). It was found that the neutral dangling-bond density [D0] of a-SiN films decreases with the presence of magnetic REs and the drop of [D0] approximately scales with the spin and/or the de Gennes factor of each rare-earth element. These results suggest that a strong exchange-like interaction, H=J(RE-D0)S(RE).S(D0), between the spin of the magnetic REs and D0 may be responsible for this behaviour, similarly to the decrease of Tc in RE-doped superconductors.

Magnetic Properties of a-Si films doped with rare-earth elements

Amorphous silicon films doped with Y, La, Gd, Er, and Lu rare-earth elements (a-Si:RE) have been prepared by co-sputtering and studied by means of electron spin resonance (ESR), dc-magnetization, ion beam analysis, optical transmission, and Raman spectroscopy. For comparison the magnetic properties of laser-crystallized and hydrogenated a-Si:RE films were also studied. It was found that the rare-earth species are incorporated in the a-Si:RE films in the RE3+ form and that the RE-doping depletes the neutral dangling bonds (D0) density. The reduction of D0 density is significantly larger for the magnetic REs (Gd3+ and Er3+) than for the non-magnetic ones (Y3+, La3+, Lu3+). These results are interpreted in terms of a strong exchange-like interaction, J RE-DB SRE SDB, between the spin of the magnetic REs and that of the D0. All our Gd-doped Si films showed basically the same broad ESR Gd3+ resonance (DHpp ~ 850 Oe) at g ~ 2.01, suggesting the formation of a rather stable RE-Si complex in these films.

Unconventional Metallic Magnetism in LaCrSb{3}

Neutron-diffraction measurements in LaCrSb{3} show a coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic sublattices below Tc=126 K, with ordered moments of 1.65(4) and 0.49(4) Bohr magnetons per formula unit, respectively (T=10 K), and a spin reorientation transition at ~95 K. No clear peak or step was observed in the specific heat at Tc. Coexisting localized and itinerant spins are suggested.

Field distribution and flux-line depinning in the mixed-state of MgB2 probed by Conduction Electron Spin Resonance

We report the first observation of the internal magnetic-field distribution and flux-line depinning in the vortex-state of a type-II superconductor probed by conduction electrons spin resonance (CESR) technique. The CESR measurements were performed in the recently discovered MgB2 type-II superconductor compound with transition temperature Tc ~ 39 K using microwave sources at 4.1 (S-band) and 9.5 GHz (X-band) corresponding to resonance fields of Hr ~ 1455 and 3390 Oe for g ~ 2.00 in the normal state, respectively. From the distortion of the CESR line in the superconducting state, the field distribution function, n(H), in the vortex-state was inferred, and from the broadening of the line a direct estimate of the standard deviation, sigma ~ 14 Oe, was obtained at ~ 28 K and 7 K for S-band and X-band, respectively. Furthermore, our experiments allowed the determination of the flux-line lattice depinning temperature for both employed microwave frequencies.

Different Gd3+ sites in CaB6: an ESR study

The local environment of Gd3+ (4f7 S=7/2) ions in single crystals of Ca1-xGdxB6 (0.0001 < x < 0.01) is studied by means of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR). The spectra for low concentration samples (x < 0.001) show a split spectrum due to cubic crystal field effects(CFE). The lineshape of each fine structure line is lorentzian, indicating an insulating environment for the Gd3+ ions. For higher concentrations (0.003 < x < 0.01), the spectra show a single resonance (g=1.992(4), DH1/2 ~ 30-60 Oe) with no CFE and dysonian lineshape indicating metallic environment for the Gd3+ ions. For intermediate concentrations, a coexistence of spectra corresponding to insulating and metallic regions is observed. Most of the measured samples show the weak ferromagnetism (WF) as reported for Ca1-xLaxB6 (x ~ 0.005), but, surprisingly, this WF has no effect in our ESR spectra either for metallic or insulating environments. This result suggests that the ferromagnetism in these systems might be isolated in clusters (defect-rich regions) and its relationship with metallicity is nontrivial.

Evidence for internal field in graphite: A conduction electron spin resonance study

We report conduction electron spin resonance measurements performed on highly oriented pyrolitic graphite samples between 10 K and 300 K using S (f = 4 GHz), X (f = 9.4 GHz), and Q (f = 34.4 GHz) microwave bands for the external dc-magnetic field applied parallel (H || c) and perpendicular (H perp c) to the sample hexagonal c-axis. The results obtained in the H || c geometry are interpreted in terms of the presence of an effective internal ferromagnetic-like field Heff-int(T,H) that increases as the temperature decreases and the applied dc-magnetic field increases. We associate the occurrence of the Heff-int(T,H) with the field-induced metal-insulator transition in graphite and discuss its origin in the light of relevant theoretical models.

Magnetic properties of the frustrated AFM spinel ZnCr_2O_4 and the spin-glass Zn_{1-x}Cd_xCr_2O_4 (x=0.05,0.10)

The $T$-dependence (2- 400 K) of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), magnetic susceptibility, $χ(T)$, and specific heat, $C_{v}(T)$, of the $normal$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) spinel ZnCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ and the spin-glass (SG) Zn$_{1-x}$Cd$_{x}$Cr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ ($x=0.05,0.10$) is reported. These systems behave as a strongly frustrated AFM and SG with $% T_{N}$ $ \approx T_{G}\approx 12$ K and -400 K $\gtrsim Θ_{CW}\gtrsim -500$ K. At high-$T$ the EPR intensity follows the $χ(T)$ and the $g$-value is $T$-independent. The linewidth broadens as the temperature is lowered, suggesting the existence of short range AFM correlations in the paramagnetic phase. For ZnCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ the EPR intensity and $χ(T)$ decreases below 90 K and 50 K, respectively. These results are discussed in terms of nearest-neighbor Cr$^{3+}$ (S $=3/2$%) spin-coupled pairs with an exchange coupling of $| J/k| \approx $ 50 K. The appearance of small resonance modes for $T\lesssim 17$ K, the observation of a sharp drop in $χ(T)$ and a strong peak in $C_{v}(T)$ at $T_{N}=12$ K confirms, as previously reported, the existence of long range AFM correlations in the low-$T$ phase. A comparison with recent neutron diffraction experiments that found a near dispersionless excitation at 4.5 meV for $T\lesssim T_{N}$ and a continuous gapless spectrum for $T\gtrsim T_{N}$, is also given.
