Euclid Space Mission: building the sky survey

The Euclid space mission proposes to survey 15000 square degrees of the extragalactic sky during 6 years, with a step-and-stare technique. The scheduling of observation sequences is driven by the primary scientific objectives, spacecraft constraints, calibration requirements and physical properties of the sky. We present the current reference implementation of the Euclid survey and on-going work on survey optimization.

Euclid space mission: a cosmological challenge for the next 15 years

Euclid is the next ESA mission devoted to cosmology. It aims at observing most of the extragalactic sky, studying both gravitational lensing and clustering over $\sim$15,000 square degrees. The mission is expected to be launched in year 2020 and to last six years. The sheer amount of data of different kinds, the variety of (un)known systematic effects and the complexity of measures require efforts both in sophisticated simulations and techniques of data analysis. We review the mission main characteristics, some aspects of the the survey and highlight some of the areas of interest to this meeting

Inflation Physics from the Cosmic Microwave Background and Large Scale Structure

Fluctuations in the intensity and polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the large-scale distribution of matter in the universe each contain clues about the nature of the earliest moments of time. The next generation of CMB and large-scale structure (LSS) experiments are poised to test the leading paradigm for these earliest moments---the theory of cosmic inflation---and to detect the imprints of the inflationary epoch, thereby dramatically increasing our understanding of fundamental physics and the early universe. A future CMB experiment with sufficient angular resolution and frequency coverage that surveys at least 1% of the sky to a depth of 1 uK-arcmin can deliver a constraint on the tensor-to-scalar ratio that will either result in a 5-sigma measurement of the energy scale of inflation or rule out all large-field inflation models, even in the presence of foregrounds and the gravitational lensing B-mode signal. LSS experiments, particularly spectroscopic surveys such as the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument, will complement the CMB effort by improving current constraints on running of the spectral index by up to a factor of four, improving constraints on curvature by a factor of ten, and providing non-Gaussianity constraints that are competitive with the current CMB bounds.

Neutrino Physics from the Cosmic Microwave Background and Large Scale Structure

This is a report on the status and prospects of the quantification of neutrino properties through the cosmological neutrino background for the Cosmic Frontier of the Division of Particles and Fields Community Summer Study long-term planning exercise. Experiments planned and underway are prepared to study the cosmological neutrino background in detail via its influence on distance-redshift relations and the growth of structure. The program for the next decade described in this document, including upcoming spectroscopic galaxy surveys eBOSS and DESI and a new Stage-IV CMB polarization experiment CMB-S4, will achieve sigma(sum m_nu) = 16 meV and sigma(N_eff) = 0.020. Such a mass measurement will produce a high significance detection of non-zero sum m_nu, whose lower bound derived from atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillation data is about 58 meV. If neutrinos have a minimal normal mass hierarchy, this measurement will definitively rule out the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy, shedding light on one of the most puzzling aspects of the Standard Model of particle physics --- the origin of mass. This precise a measurement of N_eff will allow for high sensitivity to any light and dark degrees of freedom produced in the big bang and a precision test of the standard cosmological model prediction that N_eff = 3.046.

Real space estimator for the weak lensing convergence from the CMB

We propose an estimator defined in real space for the reconstruction of the weak lensing potential due to the intervening large scale structure from high resolution maps of the cosmic microwave background. This estimator was motivated as an alternative to the quadratic estimator in harmonic space to surpass the difficulties of the analysis of maps containing galactic cuts and point source excisions. Using maps synthesised by pixel remapping, we implement the estimator for two experiments, namely one in the absence and one in the presence of detector noise, and compare the reconstruction of the convergence field with that obtained with the quadratic estimator defined in harmonic space. We find good agreement between the input and the reconstructed power spectra using the proposed real space estimator. We discuss interesting features of the real space estimator and future extensions of this work.

Kink-Antikink Formation from an Oscillation Mode by Sudden Distortion of the Evolution Potential

We demonstrate numerically that an oscillation mode in 1+1 dimensions (eg a breather or an oscillon) can decay into a kink-antikink pair by a sudden distortion of the evolution potential which occurs within a certain time or space domain. In particular, we consider the transition of a sine-Gordon potential into a Φ^4 potential. The breather field configuration is assumed to initially evolve in a sine-Gordon potential with velocity $v$ and oscillation frequency $ω$. We then consider two types of numerical experiments: a. An abrupt transition of the potential to a $Φ^4$ form at t_0=0 over the whole 1-dimensional lattice and b. The impact of the breather on a region x>x_0=0 where the potential has the Φ^4 form which is different from the sine-Gordon form valid at x<x_0=0. We find that in both cases there is a region of parameters (v,ω) such that the breather decays to a kink-antikink pair. This region of parameters for kink-antikink formation is qualitatively similar with the parameter region where the energy of the breather exceeds the energy of the kink-antikink pair in the Φ^4 potential. We demonstrate that the same mechanism for soliton formation is realized when using a gaussian oscillator (oscillon) instead of a breather. We briefly discuss the implications of our results for realistic experiments as well as their extension to soliton formation in two and three space dimensions.

Modelling non-Gaussianity from foreground contaminants

We introduce a general class of models for charaterizing the non-Gaussian properties of foreground contaminants in the cosmic microwave background with view towards the removal of the non-primordial non-Gaussian signal from the primordial one. This is important not only for treating temperature maps but also for characterizing the nature and origin of the primordial cosmological perturbations and thus establishing a theory of the early universe.

Proposed astrophysical test of Lorentz invariance

Working in the context of a Lorentz-violating extension of the standard model we show that estimates of Lorentz symmetry violation extracted from ultra-high energy cosmic rays beyond the Greisen-Kuzmin-Zatsepin (GZK) cutoff allow for setting bounds on parameters of that extension. Furthermore, we argue that a correlated measurement of the difference in the arrival time of gamma-ray photons and neutrinos emitted from active galactic nuclei or gamma-ray bursts may provide a signature of possible violation of Lorentz symmetry. We have found that this time delay is energy independent, however it has a dependence on the chirality of the particles involved. We also briefly discuss the known settings where the mechanism for spontaneous violation of Lorentz symmetry in the context of string/M-theory may take place.
