New metallicity calibration for Seyfert 2 galaxies based on the N2O2 index

We derive a new relation between the metallicity of Seyfert 2 Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and the intensity of the narrow emission-lines ratio $N2O2$=log([N II]$λ$6584/[O II]$λ$3727). The calibration of this relation was performed determining the metallicity ($Z$) of a sample of 58 AGNs through a diagram containing the observational data and the results of a grid of photoionization models obtained with the Cloudy code. We find the new $Z/Z_\odot$-$N2O2$ relation using the obtained metallicity values and the corresponding observational emission line intensities for each object of the sample. Estimations derived through the use of this new calibration indicate that narrow line regions of Seyfert 2 galaxies exhibit a large range of metallicities ($0.3 \: < \: Z/Z_{\odot} \: < \:2.0$), with a median value $Z \approx Z_{\odot}$. Regarding the possible existence of correlations between the luminosity $L(\rm Hβ$), the electron density, and the color excess E(B$-$V) with the metallicity in this kind of objects, we do not find correlations between them.

Witnessing spin-orbit thermal entanglement in rare-earth ions

We explore spin-orbit thermal entanglement in rare-earth ions, based on a witness obtained from mean energies. The entanglement temperature $T_{E}$, below which entanglement emerges, is found to be thousands of kelvin above room temperature for all light rare earths. This demonstrate the robustness to environmental fluctuations of entanglement between internal degrees of freedom of a single ion.

Entanglement dynamics via geometric phases in quantum spin chains

We introduce a connection between entanglement induced by interaction and geometric phases acquired by a composite quantum spin system. We begin by analyzing the evaluation of cyclic (Aharonov-Anandan) and non-cyclic (Mukunda-Simon) geometric phases for general spin chains evolving in the presence of time-independent magnetic fields. Then, by considering Heisenberg chains, we show that the interaction geometric phase, namely, the total geometric phase with subtraction of free spin contributions, is directly related to the global (Meyer-Wallach) entanglement exhibited by an initially separable state during its evolution in Hilbert space. This is analytically shown for N=2 spins and numerically illustrated for larger chains. This relationship promotes the interaction geometric phase to an indicator of global entanglement in the system, which may constitute a useful tool for quantum tasks based on entanglement as a resource to their performance.

Can black hole MACHO binaries be detected by the Brazilian spherical antenna?

Different studies show that dark matter of non-baryonic origin might exist. There have been experimental evidences that at least one form of dark matter has been detected through microlensing effects. This form of dark matter is named MACHOs (Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects). The MACHO collaboration estimated that the masses of these objects are to be in the range 0.15-0.95 solar masses, where the most probable mass is of 0.5 solar masses. Some authors argue that MACHOs could be black holes, and that they could form binary systems, BHMACHO binaries. As is well known binary systems are sources of gravitational waves. The Brazilian spherical antenna will operate in the frequency band of 3.0-3.4 kHz, sensitive to binaries of a pair of 0.5 solar mass black holes just before coalescing. In the present work we study the detectability of these putative BHMACHO binaries by the Brazilian spherical antenna Mario Schenberg.
