DC Spin Current Generation in a Rashba-type Quantum Channel

We propose and demonstrate theoretically that resonant inelastic scattering (RIS) can play an important role in dc spin current generation. The RIS makes it possible to generate dc spin current via a simple gate configuration: a single finger-gate that locates atop and orients transversely to a quantum channel in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The ac biased finger-gate gives rise to a time-variation in the Rashba coupling parameter, which causes spin-resolved RIS, and subsequently contributes to the dc spin current. The spin current depends on both the static and the dynamic parts in the Rashba coupling parameter, $α_0$ and $α_1$, respectively, and is proportional to $α_0 α_1^2$. The proposed gate configuration has the added advantage that no dc charge current is generated. Our study also shows that the spin current generation can be enhanced significantly in a double finger-gate configuration.

Finger-gate array quantum pumps:pumping characteristics and mechanisms

We study the pumping effects, in both the adiabatic and nonadiabatic regimes, of a pair of \QTR{it}{finite} finger-gate array (FGA) on a narrow channel. Connection between the pumping characteristics and associated mechanisms is established. The pumping potential is generated by ac biasing the FGA pair. For a single pair (N=1) of finger gates (FG's), the pumping mechanism is due to the coherent inelastic scattering of the traversing electron to its subband threshold. For a pair of FGA with pair number $N>2$, the dominant pumping mechanism becomes that of the time-dependent Bragg reflection. The contribution of the time-dependent Bragg reflection to the pumping is enabled by breaking the symmetry in the electron transmission when the pumping potential is of a predominant propagating type. This propagating wave condition can be achieved both by an appropriate choice of the FGA pair configuration and by the monitoring of a phase difference $ϕ$ between the ac biases in the FGA pair. The robustness of such a pumping mechanism is demonstrated by considering a FGA pair with only pair number N=4.

Spin Current Generation and Detection in the Presence of AC Gate

We predict that in a narrow gap III-V semiconductor quantum well or a wire an observable spin current can be generated with a time dependent gate to modify the Rashba spin-orbit coupling constant. Methods to rectify the so generated AC current are discussed. An all-electric method of spin current detection is suggested, which measures the voltage on the gate in the vicinity of a 2D electron gas carrying a time dependent spin current. Both the generation and detection do not involve any optical or magnetic mediators.

Finite Mass Effect on Two Photon Processes in Hydrogenic Systems: Effective Scalar Photon Interaction

We consider a hydrogenic system with a nucleus of finite mass. The coupling of the radiation field to the center of mass motion gives rise to an effective scalar type coupling. This induced scalar photon interaction emerges as a correction in competition with the usual multipole interactions. This effect is particularly important in positronium where the electric quadrupole interaction is totally suppressed. We illustrate this effect with the two-photon decay of metastable hydrogenic systems.

Open Superbranes

Open branes ending on other branes, which may be referred to as the host branes, are studied in the superembedding formalism. The open brane, host brane and the target space in which they are both embedded are all taken to be supermanifolds. It is shown that the superspace constraints satisfied by the open brane are sufficient to determine the corresponding superspace constraints for the host branes, whose dynamics are determined by these constraints. As a byproduct, one also obtains information about the boundary of the open brane propagating in the host brane.

Strings and D-Branes with Boundaries

The covariant field equations of ten-dimensional super D-branes are obtained by considering fundamental strings whose ends lie in the superworldsurface of the D-brane. By considering in a similar fashion Dp-branes ending on D(p+2)-branes we derive equations describing D-branes with dual potentials, as well as the vector potentials.

Anomalies and Locality in Field Theories and M theory

We review some basic notions on anomalies in field theories and superstring theories, with particular emphasis on the concept of locality. The aim is to prepare the ground for a discussion on anomalies in theories with branes. In this light we review the problem of chiral anomaly cancellation in M-theory with a 5-brane.

M-Fivebrane from the Open Supermembrane

Covariant field equations of M-fivebrane in eleven dimensional curved superspace are obtained from the requirement of kappa-symmetry of an open supermembrane ending on a fivebrane. The worldvolume of the latter is a (6|16) dimensional supermanifold embedded in the (11|32) dimensional target superspace. The kappa-symmetry of the system imposes a constraint on this embedding, and a constraint on a modified super 3-form field strength on the fivebrane worldvolume. These constraints govern the dynamics of the M-fivebrane.

Perturbative Anomalies of the M-5-brane

We discuss several mechanisms to cancel the anomalies of a 5-brane embedded in M-theory. Two of them work, provided we impose suitable conditions either on the 11-dimensional manifold of M-theory or on the 4-form field strength of M-theory.

On the string interpretation of M(atrix) theory

It has been proposed recently that, in the framework of M(atrix) theory, N=8 supersymmetric U(N) Yang-Mills theory in 1+1 dimensions gives rise to type IIA long string configurations. We point out that the quantum moduli space of $SYM_{1+1}$ gives rise to two quantum numbers, which fit very well into the M(atrix) theory. The two quantum numbers become familiar if one switches to a IIB picture, where they represent configurations of D-strings and fundamental strings. We argue that, due to the SL(2,Z) symmetry, of the IIB theory, such quantum numbers must represent configurations that are present also in the IIA framework.
